December 7, 2007A race in the middle of the night
The Hellgate 100K is a race that has occurred every December since 2003. For its fifth running, multimedia producer Tracy Boyer decided to follow area runner Rebekah Trittipoe as she prepared for this year's race. Trittipoe had run previous Hellgate races, but dropped out last year. As she turns 50 this year, she's determined to come back and finish the race. Trittipoe's story and the Hellgate race itself are featured in the "Running on empty" package that debuted today. Boyer uses video interviews to introduce users to Trittipoe. Working with the graphics department, she also created an interactive course map that features an audio description by the race director and panoramic images (courtesy of Seth Gitner) of spots along the way. An elevation cross-section gives a sense of the heights runners must endure throughout the course.
In addition to Trittipoe's interviews and the map, Boyer and photographer Josh Meltzer will also be on scene during the race to capture video and images of the 18-hour ordeal. Be sure to check back after the race to see how Trittipoe and the other runners fared. |
