Entertainment webcast makes its debut

This week, we introduce our newest webcast -- the ExtraCast.

It's a weekly entertainment webcast that we'll post each Wednesday, so it'll be good through the weekend.

The name is derived from our daily features section, Extra. Think of this webcast as the online supplement to what’s already in print (and online.) Each week, the ExtraCast will feature a visual rundown of the top events coming up in the region -- with special emphasis on audio clips from bands and a featured video segment.

We’ll take a broad view of entertainment. If you study some of the pilot episodes we’ve been working on since late September, you’ll see cooking demonstrations (how to squeeze pomegranate seeds to make a sparkling holiday drink) and features on shopping and home tours. You’ll even find some advice on how to get around the new downtown parking fees.

Our hosts will rotate, but you’ll see a lot of feature writers Lindsey Nair, Pete Dybdahl and Tad Dickens, all of whom our fans may remember from our late daily webcast, The TimesCast.

When we signed off The TimesCast in October, we noted that we had developed two distinct audiences -- those who wanted news, and those who wanted entertainment. We're addressing the demand for news videos by posting regular video stories to roanoke.com.

The ExtraCast is aimed at those who want local entertainment in a video format.

At the same time, we’re revamping our video blog of local bands, the MusicCast. We’re now shooting local bands at the Red Room Studio in downtown Roanoke. We recently added three videos by Roanoke rappers Illbotz to the MusicCast, and some of that work is featured on this week’s debut ExtraCast.

The ExtraCast joins two other webcasts on our TimesCast network: The Sports TimesCast, our weekly college sports show which posts each Thursday, and VarsityCast, our weekly high school sports show which posts each Tuesday.

About this blog

"From the Newsroom" is a place for newsroom editors to discuss with our community the decisions, backstories and details that go into producing The Roanoke Times and roanoke.com.

Here, we'll tell the stories behind the stories you see in the paper and on the website, talk about the decisions we've made and why we've made them, and introduce you to new features and projects we're working on.

Please join us along the way.
