Data site launches

The DataSphere is here.

The Roanoke Times/roanoke.com just launched its new home for search-it-yourself databases about our region and our state -- the first site of its kind by a Virginia newspaper.

Other papers, such as the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Indianapolis Star, the Greenville (S.C.) News, and the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press, have fine sites like this that inspired us, and from whom we have, well, borrowed ideas from.

In the DataSphere, you'll find databases on topics from schools, crime and politics to Virginia Tech football and trophy freshwater fish. Its news you find yourself and filter yourself, all set up for you to search with a click or two in most cases. There are also links to searchable data on both government and commercial sites elsewhere on the web. I’ll post a fact of the week, plus links to stories by our staff and others that relate to data. I’ve also got links to documents in the news, like the Michael Vick indictment and the Virginia Tech Review Panel report.

And there's plenty more to come, like real estate transfers, property assessments and crime statistics.

Finally, there's the DataBlog, where I'll be pointing out new data and talking up the nuggets I find in my own queries.

Here, we'll tell the stories behind the stories you see in the paper and on the website, talk about the decisions we've made and why we've made them, and introduce you to new features and projects we're working on.
