Virginia Tech-N.C. State in-game blog

POSTGAME: Nice comeback by the Hokies today — the largest of the Frank Beamer era — as Tech rallies from a 17-point deficit to beat No. 23 N.C. State 41-30. If you missed the game or want to review some details, it’s all below. Tyrod Taylor led a critical drive to make sure the earlier rally didn’t go to waste. That’ll be my column topic for tomorrow. Column also will include a killer postgame quote from Stiney (sorry — gotta tease sometimes.)
Coach Frank Beamer said he’s not sure if he’s ever been more proud of a performance than the one his team gave today.
A few stats of note:
Total yards: N.C. State 507, Virginia Tech 440
Tech red zone performance: Five trips, two touchdowns, two field goals
Taylor: 12-for-24, 123 passing yards, three touchdowns, 1 interception, 121 rushing yards
Evans: 15 carries for 160 yards
Hosley: Three interceptions, four pass breakups
Boykin: Two catches for 47 yards and 1 TD.
Russell Wilson: 21-for-49, three touchdowns, three interceptions, 34 rushing yards.
That’s all for tonight. Enjoy the rest of the weekend, everyone. As always, thanks for checking in and contributing your thoughts today.

Tech wins toss and defers. Wolfpack to get the ball first.

Just for fun: What do you think the first play the Hokies run on first down inside the red zone will be? I say play-action pass to tight end. If it’s a run, I’ll be stunned.

We’re about an hour away from kickoff in Raleigh, where the Hokies will take on the No. 23 N.C. State. Clear blue skies and warm temperatures here. The Hokies are in all whites with maroon helmets; the Wolfpack’s in all red with white helmet. Vegas line is Tech by 3.5, over-under is set at 52.

Excellent article on Tech offense, too much talent and too little scoring in the red zone, and overall inconsistent play.

  2. the other Tony | October 2, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Right on the money, POOR offensive coaching !! I am glad someone called Beamer on this.

  3. ken | October 2, 2010 at 2:56 pm

First Red Zone play–play action pass with forced scramble because protection breaks down

  4. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 3:32 pm

This oughtta be a good ern..

  5. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Honestly, I don’t see the Hokies winning this game. The Wolfpack defense are going to be hounding Taylor all afternoon, and the offense, led by Wilson, will have the Hokies defense chasing them. Vegas has Tech winning by 3.5, and I don’t see how that’s possible.

Aaron, good write up on the offense woes of Tech. It’s definetely the coaching that’s hurting the Tech’s offense. Maybe Foster should be the o-line coach and teach them how a defensive lineman think so they can block.

  6. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 3:43 pm

    looks short

  7. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 3:45 pm

td nc…well see about the Tech offense now

  8. Other John | October 2, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Wilson made that look easy. Hope the typical adjustments by Foster work or it’s going to be a high-scoring affair.

  9. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 3:47 pm

If the Hokies first redzone play is a fade to the TE I will swear Stiney is playing Madden and just using the Ask Madden button. A play like that just makes too much sense.

  10. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Maybe its just the typical slow start for Tech. They seem to need to be pushed down a hill and have the clutch popped most of the time.

  11. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 3:50 pm

    sac time!

  12. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 3:50 pm

3.First Red Zone play – - Pass, Taylor can’t pick out open rec’r and scrambles for 2 yards. 2d play – Evans right for less than 2 yards.
    LONG DAY ! !!
aa: Great article on offense problems. We need a voice.
    Go Hoches

we need this third down conversion

  14. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 3:51 pm

    poor kick,lotta pressure

  15. Other John | October 2, 2010 at 3:51 pm

That does not inspire confidence in Hokie fans…

  16. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 3:52 pm

ECU just scored on UNC, but tarheels should be full strength by the time we play them

  17. Other John | October 2, 2010 at 3:53 pm

sorry…’for’ Hokie fans. Let’s see if the D steps up with the short field. If we go down by 14 this quick, it’s going to be hard to recover.

  18. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 3:54 pm

This is going to be a long afternoon for Tech.

  19. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Early indication of game outcome: If half of Taylor’s pass plays never get thrown, means Hokies lose. First two series, Hokies rush for less than 3 yd per carrier, means Hokies lose. Taylor runs in Red zone, Hokies loss. Defense gives you early long passes; Hokies loss.
Three turnovers by Hokies; Hokies loss.
    I’m optimist ! !

  20. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 3:56 pm

Early hope, NC State seems to have decided they can pass against us more easily than run. If we could get a lead and put some pressure on Wilson

  21. ken | October 2, 2010 at 3:57 pm

We now see that NCS’s standard play on a blitz will be going deep down the middle to the single covered receiver

  22. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 3:58 pm

    nice run

  23. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 3:59 pm

We haven’t tried to run, yet

  24. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 3:59 pm

The idea of getting negative yards on a pass is just ridiculous

  25. ken | October 2, 2010 at 3:59 pm

They may not get to the red zone…

  26. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:00 pm

    Ugh…

  28. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Another dropped pass, but this one goes back for a near TD. We’ve also seen one fumble recovered.

  29. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 4:01 pm

ken – beat me to it haha

  30. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:01 pm

VT on College Football Overdrive if you are not one of part of the 16% of tghe country that is getting the game. Wish we had caught not tipped that ball.

  31. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:02 pm

    nice call TD NCS

  32. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:03 pm

I think I’ll watch the LSU game.
Doesn’t anyone learn from film? Sucked in on a playfake again, just like vs BSU. This time a pass, but the QB could also have run it in.

    This is painful.

  33. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:04 pm

Wilson getting pumped for Heisman on ESPN Overdrive.

  34. Other John | October 2, 2010 at 4:05 pm

This appears to be a long afternoon. As much as I want VT to win, I’m starting to think we need to be shellacked badly a time or two this year for any changes to be made. A close loss to Boise and the loss to JMU five days later haven’t really seemed to shake anything up in meaningful fashion, so maybe getting housed by the Wolfpack in Carter-Finley will spur things along better. I moved my game prediction closer, but I’m wondering if that 38-24 pick might not be more likely.

  35. Hokiephil | October 2, 2010 at 4:06 pm

This is not looking good. May have to limit viewing for those who are squeamish about Gore!

  36. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Starting off like we did against Boise State

  37. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:09 pm

If Tech scores on this drive, back in the game

  38. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Looks like Tech can easily get to the corner on this D.

And finally Marcus Davis, there you are!

  39. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:11 pm

    These NC boys hit hard

  40. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:11 pm

  41. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:12 pm

  42. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:13 pm

    wide open…

  43. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:14 pm

    Tech better tighten up

  44. Hokiephil | October 2, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Wilson is the real deal. Picking us apart.

  45. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    wow

  46. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:16 pm

If we don’t find a secondary soon we are looking at a blowout.

  47. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 4:17 pm

on a more positive note, I think the way Tech is playing right now they might could make it into the 2nd round of the Region IV playoffs

  48. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:17 pm

At least the clock can stop him

  49. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:19 pm

If Taylor and Wilson swapped teams, would the results be any different?

  50. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 4:21 pm

I’m already rooting for Alabama. As for Tech, they don’t deserve their hype and accolades they have beeng getting all summer long. It’s time for a coach change to take place, starting with Beamer, and down.

  51. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 4:22 pm

  53. Hokiephil | October 2, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Wow. 17 – 0. Boise De ja Vu. But I’m not sure we can come back on this team.

  54. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:24 pm

If you want to see Tech in the abyss, get rid of Beamer..he made the team..they were from nowheresville before him

  55. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 4:25 pm

    Where is hokie24 today?

  56. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Think of next year, fellow Hokies. Lots of building to do. The defense needs to grow and we need to start developing an offensive line. Tyrod Taylor just called out on ESPN for his lack of ability to throw the deep ball this year.

  57. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 4:28 pm

    super kick

  58. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Let’s bench Taylor and put in Logan Thomas. I wanna see what a pocket passer will do against the Wolfpack’s secondary. Taylor is not a true QB, he’s a runner, pure and simple.

  59. Hokiephil | October 2, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Tyrod missing open receivers , Team is heading south in this game. Has the makings of a blowout.

  60. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:31 pm

They just look awful today. Looks like nothing learned since the first week.

  61. Mr Hokie | October 2, 2010 at 4:33 pm

    Wow. Hokies really bite.

  62. Hokiephil | October 2, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Good stop by the D! But I’m afraid we have no O.

  63. Mr Hokie | October 2, 2010 at 4:35 pm

@ken – at least we’re losing “meaningful” games now. Lol

  64. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Tyrod is throwing the ball across his chest, like Tebow did, and he throws a bit too high for his receivers to catch.

  65. Dennis | October 2, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Maybe u keep Beamer, but if he won’t fire Stinespring, maybe he needs to go too. first four offensive plays of game; pass. 1 complete for five yds. 2 inc. and one sack. first running play Wilson for 27 yds. what does he do next? pass play. please, what is he thinking?

  66. Mr Hokie | October 2, 2010 at 4:43 pm

@hokiephil We actually have some “D” and “O”…as Home Simpson once so elegantly said “DOH!”

  67. Mr Hokie | October 2, 2010 at 4:46 pm

@Trevor If only he was lousy in the other ways that Tebow was.

  68. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Rutgers just lost to Tulane. How bad are the Big East and ACC this year?

  69. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:47 pm

With the game on tv here in SW VA, it looks like we have many fewer participants on the blog. Or, maybe they’ve already headed for the exits to beat the traffic.

I know the Hokies look awful, but, please, let’s cool it on the “Fire Beamer” talk–does anyone really believe there is anyone out there who would do a better job?

Wow–that’s one terrific run by Taylor.

  70. Dennis | October 2, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Like I said. Run the damn ball

  71. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:47 pm

    HEY!! A red zone play!!!

  72. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 4:50 pm

That’s what I mean by Trod, he’s a runner, not a true passer.

Look, Beamer talks every years that, “This is the team…” Blah blah. It’s not going to change.

  73. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Offensive line doesn’t seem good enough to open holes down near the goal line.

  74. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Yes! Tight end in the endzone. Not exactly what Madden said to do, but very close.

  75. Dennis | October 2, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Beamer is a great man and head coach. I just think his friendship with Stiney is screwing up his judgement. Like McFarland said, we have too much talent to be doing this poorly on offense. Wilson is averaging 8 yds per carry. how many times has he been given the ball today?

  76. ken | October 2, 2010 at 4:54 pm

    Uh..Aaron? Aaron? You still here?

Third time they have beaten the by throwing deep down the middle.

  77. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Whoa, NC State didn’t go for the field goal?

  78. Dennis | October 2, 2010 at 4:58 pm

I would love to play Stiney in Madden. He sucks

  79. abdnva | October 2, 2010 at 4:59 pm

So I called it earlier this week – the FIRST play in the red zone was GUARANTEED on the life of all your family – to be a pass. It was. In fact, Stiney, in his ‘craftiness’, called three straight pass plays. Because, you know, it’s all about proving the detractors wrong much more than in establishing a winning offense.

My question is – before this, Stinespring has called something like 72 of 74 red zone plays as passes, so will he now call about a dozen straight pass plays in the red zone to ‘prove’ he isn’t as conservatively stupid as everyone claims?

I don’t think he’s conservatively stupid, just stupid. Deliberately inconsistent, thinking that is a positive trait. Don’t get me started…

  80. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Punting has been good since that first one.

  81. abdnva | October 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    Oops, 72 of 74 as runs… LOL…

  82. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Are we playing that 5 db set that helped us against ECU?

  83. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Randy, looks like it. Hard to defend against the run with that kind of D. Nice sack. Foster need to continue to harass the QB.

  84. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:04 pm

I think in all the talk of VT’s talent, no one thought about how poorly we would play in the trenches.

  85. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Randy, that’s right. They aren’t winning the “trench warfare,” so to speak.

  86. ken | October 2, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Anybody else think that hit was illegal? Looked to me like he was hit on the ball and gave it up. Didn’t hit him in the head.

  87. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:16 pm

No, it is time to clean out the coaching staff. Beamer, Stinespring, keep Foster. There are plenty of coaches that could do better, and be happy to come to a strong program with money, and talent to build a great team on.

  88. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Here we go! Redzone. I say they get a field goal.

  89. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 5:18 pm

I would love to see Nick Saban coach Tech. I can see that Foster and Saban share the same coaching philsophy – defense wins the game. Wishful thinking I’m sure.

  90. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Beamer is owed more than that by us, but Stinespring has to be feeling some heat.

  91. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:19 pm

Stinespring got it wrong again. Bad pass play calls to over compensate for too much running last week. He’s a fool. A confused fool !!

  92. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:20 pm

We owe Beamer NOTHING !!!! He retired three years ago. He is coasting.
Old and set in his ways. No changes in staff or strategy. Fight the same ole battles. Time has passed him by.

  93. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:25 pm

Tech was a little league team before Beamer,be careful what you wish for,you might get it

  94. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 5:29 pm

So Tech has looked unprepared yet again, I have to wonder what they are spending all week doing these days, I mean I know they have a sweet locker room now, but are they spending all week in there playing Halo on all those sweet TVs?

On an un related note, Onion hamburger buns are highly underrated.

  95. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Yes, Beamer did what others could not. Does he deserve all the credit?? NO!!!! Progress has been made by Foster. Foster has top 10 defense year after year. Spinespring can’t get about top 50. What has Beamer done to help the offense??? NOTHING !!!!! Where is the Beamer Ball special teams??? Gone ! ! !

  96. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:36 pm

He chose the coaches,if you credit them you have to credit him,he IS the Tech program from recruiting on,He BUILT these great Tech teams

  97. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Where is the energy and inspiration from the coaches during the game????
They look like the foreman for a ditch digging road crew. Stand and watch, while other do the work. Motivate ! ! !

  98. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Tech is going to pull this one out. Bryan is very good with half time adjustments.

  99. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Great Tech teams?? Where!!! Are you watching the game?? Great losses against top ten teams year after year!!! Wasted talent!! Wasted opportunity!!!

  100. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:40 pm

    Theyre back in the game

  101. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:41 pm

LOL !!! Bryan is very good at what??? Excuses!!! Avoiding responsibility??? Bryan is great at hanging on to a job that is is totally unfit for!!!! OPEN YOUR EYES!! Maybe Tech football is ok for dumb hicks that are used to watching single A high school !!???

  102. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:42 pm

GW of Danville’s David Wilson gives us some life.

  103. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:42 pm

    Wasnt that special teams

  104. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Who needs to be touching the ball more?

That’s right, #4. He is magical.

  105. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Hazley is a little more mortal than most Hokie kickers have been

  106. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:46 pm

    Great D

  107. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:47 pm

    TD NCS

  108. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:48 pm

How many times do we get these guys in a hole and Wilson bails them out.

  109. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:48 pm

    Helluva throw on the run

  110. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 5:48 pm

No, not great D, Jack. They didn’t get close enough to Wilson for him to smell their bad breath. That’s why Foster was mad.

  111. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:49 pm

All the grief we give Stiney, but the D is on pace to give up close to 40 points

  112. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 5:52 pm

    Peppers….very mature

  113. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Good grief, two guys back there and Wilson threw against his body, on the run.

  114. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:52 pm

It was on the play when I wrote it,not overall

  115. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 5:53 pm

The D is letting us down. Foster needs to get his act together.

  116. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:55 pm

    Its all about momentum

  117. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Jason, I got to disagree. It’s not the D that’s letting them down, it’s the offense. They don’t score, the D has to step up to get a stop. That’s more pressure on the D.

  118. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:57 pm

Can anybody in College football tackle?

  119. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 5:58 pm

the offense is getting the job done…perhaps they need a better play caller on defense.

  120. Travis Williams | October 2, 2010 at 5:58 pm

that might have been the slowest long touchdown I’ve seen in a while, Evans needs to get that extra gear

  121. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 5:58 pm

Wow ! ! Did you see Beamer and Stinespring ran that all the way back. Great coaches. A run like that takes great coaching. All is well in the Hokie Nation. !!!!!!!

  122. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Ya know everyone says College ball is more exciting, but the quality is really poor

  123. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Nice block in the back on the touchdown run. Play should have came back minus 10 yards.

  124. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 6:00 pm

Trevor, the team is built around defense and specials teams…not offense…we’re kidding ourselves to think otherwise. Tech will never be a top 10 offense. That’s not Tech’s identity.

  125. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:00 pm

At least we can worry less about Foster getting a head coaching job this year.

  126. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Foster a head coach? What a joke. Everytime Tech plays a top 10 team his defense gets blown up…i.e, LSU a few years back…anyone remember that?

  127. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 6:02 pm

offense getting the job done >>> LOL
10 yds a play avg?? Wow !! Jason: First game for you?? LOL
    Offense is very inconsistant.

  128. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:04 pm

    Please help us secondary!

  129. Jason | October 2, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Peppers, in case you haven’t noticed Tech is within 3 points…Defense has given up 24

  130. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Hey, we can come back and take our first lead

  131. ken | October 2, 2010 at 6:11 pm

VT has scored TDs the last two possessions. Unfortunately, defense has allowed scores the last two possessions as well. For giving up as many yards as they have given up, VT is right in this game.

  132. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:15 pm

    Taylor not as efficient today

  133. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Wow nice of the ACC to assign a blacksburg officiating crew to this game.

  134. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Why did we go for it on 4th and 14 from our side of the field? Is that a statement about the defense or what?

  135. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Jason, I hear what you are saying. I’m saying if we have our offense putting points on the board, it gives our defense some rest and breathing room. This year, the offense is a joke. Every defensive coordinator is simply loading the box to overwhelm the line and stem the the running attack. Every time Ryan Williams had the ball, defense were in his face .

  136. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:18 pm

Sorry, stupid ESPN gameday got confused about downs

  137. Peppers Ferry | October 2, 2010 at 6:25 pm

What was that stupid comment about the Blacksburg referees??!!

  138. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:30 pm

2 Flags all day are you serious?

  139. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 6:30 pm

    Helluva comeback

  140. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Need another stop by the D and at least one more TD from the O

  141. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:32 pm

One of the best games of the day

  142. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Hokies are the greatest team to ever put on cleats!

  143. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Tech D works well with NC poor field position..well see here

  144. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    Great kick!

  145. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:34 pm

Justin Myer, unsung hero for the Hokies

  146. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Never do a deep handoff on short yardage

  147. ken | October 2, 2010 at 6:35 pm

Wow..nice dodging tackles. Tacklers off balance and on the ground

  148. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:36 pm

    Its like Arena Footbal

  149. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 6:38 pm

    NC running game…zilch

  150. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Another big penalty. Who was complaining about the lack of penalties on Tech?

  151. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:40 pm

That’s 3 Randy. Now lets go back and look at the ones they got away with. Block in the back on a touchdown. High tackle on an unprotected player.

  152. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:42 pm

But all 3 have been in the last 5 to 10 minutes so I guess O’Brien got his point across.

  153. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:43 pm

We need a long drive. Can’t help it if the ref’s are intimidated by the Hokie crowd in North Carolina.

  154. ken | October 2, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Hey OG, I didn’t see the block, but if the high tackle is the one on the pass down the middle, I think he hit right on the ball.

  155. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:45 pm

It’s actually pretty even on penalties now but it was pretty lopsided at one point.

  156. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:45 pm

No first down and no time off the clock

  157. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:46 pm

Ken it was the one down the middle and the you’re right the first guy hit him clean but the second guy was high. The block was on the corner and it was close but it’s a call they usually make.

  158. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 6:52 pm

    Terrible call.

  159. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:52 pm

    Not sure about that call.

  160. ken | October 2, 2010 at 6:52 pm

For those of you who are angry at VT’s coaching–the LSU Tennessee game just had one of the most unbelievable endings. LSU’s coaches again screwed up on time and snapped the ball over the head of the qb to end the game, but Tennessee had 13 guys on the field. LSU gets an untimed down and scores.

  161. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:53 pm

I hate when the announcer says the QB underthrew the ball on purpose. I don’t think the QBs ever have that much time to think about throwing the ball short!

  162. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Ken that’s amazing. How do you not keep track of the people on the field. That’s the easiest thing in football.

  163. ken | October 2, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Let’s see what the offense can do on a one and done series…

  164. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 6:58 pm

    LSU Tenn was unbelievable.

  165. Original Greg | October 2, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Don’t they teach those UVA grads to count?

  166. ken | October 2, 2010 at 7:00 pm

LSU had 32 seconds, ball on 3 and changed qb’s to its running qb. No TO’s for either team. Guy gets stopped on about the 2. 25 seconds to go, 3rd and goal. LSU muddles around…tick tick tick…then changes its offensive players…tick tick…Tennessee sends in 4 different players but only two come off..tick tick..LSU obviously confused but center snaps the ball with 3 seconds to go right by the qb.

  167. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 7:05 pm

Man, those spread offense is amazing when the line blocks like heck!

  168. ken | October 2, 2010 at 7:05 pm

Wow–nice YAC job by Boykin. Did they leave too much time on the clock? I guess you can’t be choosy when you’re trailing.

  169. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Ok, D, time for a massive stop here.

  170. Jack Mcguire | October 2, 2010 at 7:09 pm

    game over

  171. ken | October 2, 2010 at 7:11 pm

    Biggest comeback in Beamer history

  172. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Now, that’s why it’s important for offense to score. It gives the D the juice to win.

  173. Randy Ramsey | October 2, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Suddenly Wilson regressed about 3 years

  174. Trevor | October 2, 2010 at 7:19 pm

I don’t know how it happened, but apparently, the defense was able to stop the Wolfpack and suddenly, the offense got clicking. To be honest, the issue is consistency on offense, and that’s what Beamer needs to fix. I know I bellyache about the coaching, but it needs to be addressed so Tech can have the go to work mentality.

  175. Mr Hokie | October 2, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Oh man…I gave up, went outside, and missed it!

  176. Mr Hokie | October 2, 2010 at 8:02 pm

    Missed it ALL!

  177. garry zettersten | October 2, 2010 at 9:05 pm

watched ever play with alumni here in san antonio. here’s what I saw:

    1. NCSU had the play AND snap count down about 6 plays. it didn’t hurt that they have sean glennon’s little brother on the sideline. I bet we have changed nothing since sean’s time.
    2. All the ncsu qb has to do is put the ball in the air and let his guys chase it. their receivers looked like they had 4 inches on vt #1 (Exum?).
    3. I didn’t see us hit their #56 until the 4th qtr. what’s up with that?
    4. can anyone on our team hit? i didn’t see a single “boom – hello” from us all game. there were some tangle ups but not a single “greeting” like we saw from flowers, rause, harris, grimm and woirlds. i just don’t see the intensity.
    5. did u notice taylor yelling at his guys to get going? i like that kid.
    6. thank goodness we didn’t redshirt wilson.
    7. gotta love boykin and evans. they pancaked guys on their way to the endzone.
    8. what is with vt that we have to be on life support before we can play?
    9. have you noticed that beamer has the “stunned mullet” look on his face allot? Is he working the refs or does he not believe how awful we can play?
    10. i am relieved we won but we just aren’t good. we go from stinko to great in the flash of wilson but geez. i’d like to see 4 good qrtrs.

  178. Melanie | October 2, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Give the game ball to defense, Taylor and Hosely. The naysayers say we have no offense, but in reality, you can’t score against a good team on every drive. They proved scoring capability from every facet today. Love Foster and Stinespring, they got it done from the hole!!!

  179. Other John | October 2, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Another decent win, but I’m still very concerned about the team. The next 3 weeks ought to be relatively easy victories…but we also said that about JMU. Hopefully, the defense can mature more and work on stopping someone at some point…too many yards and big plays again today.

The offense has shown signs of life, but it still needs to improve too. There were a lot of missed opportunities again today, and we wrap the season up with 4 tough games with Miami, UNC, GT, and UVA. While we stand a good shot of being 6-2 heading into that stretch…the only way I see VT winning 3 or 4 of those games is if the O, D, and Special Teams can all show consistency in their performance for an entire game.

VT once again, like with Boise and ECU, fell behind early and had to rally like mad to have a chance. We’ve done a so-so job of finishing games out, and a worse job of starting them with a bang. We need to draw first blood and score early, and our D needs to lay some bone-shaking hits on our opponents and throw them off their gameplan early. We just aren’t doing either right now…and that concerns me.

We’ve gotten lucky with comebacks in 2 games now, but it’s going to take a lot more than luck to finish out the season in successful fashion.

  180. abdnva | October 3, 2010 at 12:16 am

If we lose again before November, it would be a catastrophe. However, we don’t play a real team before November. In November, it’s quite possible we go 2-2, leaving us at 8-4 for the regular season.

That would test Beamer’s so cherished excuse of ‘But we won ten games, yadda, yadda, so I don’t have to change anything…’

  181. David F | October 3, 2010 at 4:02 am

About the NCSU Offense – likely the best we face this season. That offense is better than Boise State’s. However, this defense has got to work on consistency. We also have a bad tendency to screw ourselves with penalties when we have the opposing offense on the ropes. Now, VT Offense……..this offense is schizoid. No, the talent is obviously there. Is Stiney doing random play calling? There is something off, but I don’t have the knowledge to say just what. VT is not a top 10 team right now. I would suggest that Boise is going to crash hard the first time they play a true top ten team. I also suggest that JMU could beat more than half the 1-A teams that are out there. If this team gains consistency, then we will start blowing people out of the water. Then it will be time to start all over again. I hope we can fill Tyrod’s spot without a huge drop off in performance.

It’s interesting to go back the next day and read the contributions to this blog. A lot of the contributors here sure give up easy. Glad the Hokie football team and coaching staff aren’t like some of you folks. To paraphrase that great philosopher Ron White, “Ya’ll sure got a lot of quit in ya”.

Peppers, you should learn one of my favorite quotes. “It is best to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.”

    It will be exciting

  184. Procrastinating Paul | October 3, 2010 at 4:34 pm
