Friday briefing: Opening Day, Part II; 21-year-old co-leads Masters
Gotta make it super-quick today, guys. I’ll throw up some details on Saturday’s Tech football scrimmage this afternoon…
ANOTHER CELEBRATION OF BASEBALL IS UPON US, as the Salem Red Sox open their Carolina League season at home tonight against the Frederick Keys. Neil Harvey has a look at some of the improvements at the ballpark here. Katrina Waugh has an overview of the team here and an even more detailed breakdown here. The Red Sox also have eliminated their concessions vendor and taken the operation in-house. Details on that are here.
TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD RORY MCILROY FIRES A 7-UNDER 65 TO GRAB A SHARE OF THE FIRST ROUND LEAD at The Masters. He’s tied with Alvaro Quiros, a 28-year-old Spaniard known for his booming drives. Full leaderboard is here. Phil Mickelson is at 2-under and Tiger Woods is at 1-under. TV coverage starts at 3 p.m. on ESPN. I know one thing: Augusta looks fabulous in HD.

The Masters is by far my favorite tournament of the year, as the grounds always look magical. Even if I wasn’t a golf fan I would still tune in just for the scenery. Good luck to the young unknowns.
Won’t be able to make opening night in Salem, but look forward to many great evenings watching baseball at a fine minor league park.
As they say about The Masters. Doesn’t start until the back nine on Sunday. First round leaders normally fade.
One suprise last night. Saw a commercial for a video game call The Masters. I’m suprised they would sell the club rights to a video game. Maybe a sign of the poor economy.
Aaron, anything in HD looks amazing. Makes me wonder why I still have a 27″ CRT TV from 2002 vintage…aside from the fact that I have nothing to hook it up to at this point.
Tiger sort of surprised me by going 1-under. However, I suspect he throws in a 2-3 over par round either today or tomorrow. My pick started fast but faded a bit later with 5 bogies on the back 9…that’s more like how I play, except rather than going with 2 pars and 2 birdies for the other 4 holes, I’d have 1 par, 2 double bogies, and a snowman in there somewhere…or a 10 if I’m playing Auburn Hills.
Augusta in high-def is worth seeing, even if you don’t like golf.
It is so crystal clear, colorful . . . . you can even see the booger on the Smales kids finger as he gets ready to eat it.
Justafan… I think that game that you saw a commercial for is for the EA Tiger Woods 2012 game. That game this year finally has the Masters tournament and course in it for the first time, and the cover of the box shows the title as “The Masters” and “Tiger Woods 2012.”
I bought my copy last week, but have been too busy and haven’t even ripped the plastic off yet. That will happen this weekend!!
Rory is one of those who I was thinking of yesterday. I love this kid’s game. Kaymer gagged.
Fred Couples is -3 through 8 as I write. At -4 so far he is in the thinkc of it as I hoped.
Phil made two miracle shots yesterday off the straw but couldn’t convert.
Tiger did ok but the commentators say he just doesn;t practice putting like he used to. it shows.
Augusta on HD is beautiful and I am watching the stream over my computer now. I work for myself so my boss is ok with it.
I just got MLB At Bat 11 for my phone, I’m hoping the streaming audio aspect of it works as advertised, then I can listen to Tigers games all season long. That may prove to be the best $14.99 I’ve spent. I already like the in-depth previews, stats, and game summaries they provide, plus they also do a lot of video of highlights and whatnot. Very cool.
