UNC AD Dick Baddour was just up here addressing ACC expansion. Here’s some of what he said: “When you think about it nationally, it’s obvious that the world is turning upside down and we want the ACC – I want the University of North Carolina – to be in a position where we are strong…I think it’s absolutely the right thing for the conference for John to show that leadership and have something in place.”

The big news today: Syracuse and Pittsburgh beginning the process of leaving the Big East and applying for ACC membership. See the story here.

Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. Stop by and share your thoughts on the game.

@mdsams Superb for first 3 innings. Good after. He'll be a good one (he is only 20) but the better-than-Bundy tag seems a bit much. ReTweet Reply Favorite

What I find interesting about Pitt and Syracuse petitioning to join the ACC was those teams were discussed as a possible natural rival for Boston College, roughly 3 weeks ago, I don’t know if you’ll find that blog post. I think it makes a lot of sense. For football, Pittsburg plays a smashmouth football (even though they have switched the spread), and Syracuse would make a worthy opponent for Boston College.

As for basketball, both programs are solid, especially with the national following of the Orangemen. So I think those two additions would give the ACC a bit of a boost, but only a bit.

By the way, Clemson stuns Auburn today, winning 38-24. Dabo said he hopes Florida State comes to Clemson undefeated.

Be careful what you wish for, Dabo.

Why in the world waste time at a UVA game….I could have told you they would lose big and save you a trip. Next time stay home and watch the Hokie dismantle the Unv of Wal-Mart.

This is a nations top 5 defense….no doubt…..And all the Thomas haters can go back into the holes they crawled out from.

  5. Other John | September 17, 2011 at 7:04 pm

Logan Thomas continues to show his rough edges and inexperience with 2 4th quarter picks. Overall though, he’s played better than last week. But the low point production against Arkansas State and the mistakes the team has made as a whole give me concern going forward. The team is good and will get better, but they’ve got a long way to go yet.

Rocco’s line wasn’t really indicative of how well he played. Lots of drops, especially from Snyder. He looked a lot more confident when he threw the ball today. I’m still not entirely sure of the staff’s plan for Watford. He’s only a year behind Rocco, so is he being groomed to play quarterback… his fourth year at UVA? It still hasn’t made a lot of sense to me.

Plenty of encouragement from this game. Outclassed talent-wise and we still put up 470 yards of offense on one of the best defenses in the ACC. The defense really needs to get more push on the line to stop that run where it starts instead of waiting until it gets to the secondary. Penalties are still a concern, and hopefully the freshman miscues will lessen over the course of the season. But overall, there is no reason this group cannot go bowling this year. They do a lot of things well.

I jinxed UVA when I picked them to win in the Fearless Forecasters poll. If it continues to work I will continue to pick them. Sounds like UNC is pretty legit this year. Although VT showed a lot of improvement, especially Logan Thomas, although I am still not optimistic for going undefeated in the ACC. Clemson looks strong today and performed well enough to handle VT with ease. Hopefully the offense will make more strides next week at Marshall so they will be prepared for ACC play. Also, GT put up over 700 yards today and they always give VT problems. Whew, so glad football season is finally here.

    another CUPCAKE win for VT

play somebody then you can brag

    bunch of idiots……..

  9. The other Tony | September 17, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Comments on the VT game to add to discussion above : VTs big problem and it has been a problem for last 4 or 5 years is the POOR offensive line play. All of David Wilsons yardage this year has been his own with little or no help from the line blocking. They can pass block average but the run blocking is pathetic. when will FB figure this out and boot line coach Newsome out the door ?? The line is really holding up the performance of this team.

Just watched FSU-OU game. This is the first time I have seen the “old” Florida State…even in a loss, the speed and talent was there, especially on defense. And, OU was even better. The game was SEC-like, in atmosphere, talent and style.

If VT’s offense stumbles around like they have in the last two games (and, yes, 462 yards can still be stumbling around), they will get obliterated. They can’t afford to miss throws like the first interception, which turned a VT TD into a turnover by throwing behind the receiver. They can’t hit uprights, or run into each other on running plays. Short dump off passes will result in 3 yard gains, or deflections and interceptions.

And, for all you Hokie fans, time to get worked up about being left completely out of the ESPN GameDay opening theme. They showed East Carolina, for crissake, along with a really heavy SEC and Big 10 flavor. Last year, there were VT logos visible in various spots, but I didn’t see one this year. Only ACC team that really shows up is, yes, FSU. Aaron–what gives?

Gotta admit I was surprised by Miami’s performance against OSU.

  11. dave | September 18, 2011 at 12:29 am

Not sure who the dave” was that posted at 10:24 but it wasn’t me and I post on here regularly with that blog ID. As far as today’s games, just shows you what I know. My earlier week comment was “maryland has a shot. The others—not so much. ” So the others, (Miami, Clemson, and Fla. St all proved me wrong. I was impressed with Clemson. Rarely have I seen Ohio
State dominated by a ground game like Miami did today. And without the injuries to their top wide receiver and starting QB I think FSU had a definite shot at winning. The Terps did have a shot but blew it with mistakes and getting behind so early. Ga. Tech was awesome. The Hoos showed a lot of potential but hqave to get awy from the critical mstakes
and learn to finish some drives. The Hokies were fine on defense, pretty sporadic on offense, and better be playing better by the time they get to Clemson, Ga. Tech, and Fla St or they will get their butts handed to them.
Miami looked good on the ground but Harris was inconsistent. And I’m not sure how much of a distinction it is to win the Cheater Bowl. Anyway, the results reminded me again why I no longer bet on football games !

I SEE tech GOT BY ANOTHER TOUGH TEAM. NOW THEY GO TO MARSHALL! Soon,Soon-tech’s time is coming! Out of the games I watched Sat.-tech could not beat any of them. They will be 4-0 after this next weekend. National Championship just over the horizon. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

From yesterday’s news, it’s locked in now for VT to stay in ACC. Not that there was ever a question that was the fact. Not only has the ACC upped the exit fee to $20 mil, but all 12 member schools voted unanimously for that. Also, the announcement will come today that the schools have voted to accept Pitt & Syracuse as members. Expect the 27 month time line for Big East exit to be shortened so that it is effective for the 2013 football season.

Does it stop there? No, the next ACC-related news will be that UConn & Rutgers are also joining. Expect a four division ACC, with 16 members, as of 2013.

Division A – Syracuse, UConn, BC, Rutgers
Division B – VaTech, UVa, Maryland, Pitt
Division C – UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake
Division D – Clemson, GaTech, FSU, Miami

Scheduling? In football, you play your division members every year, and everyone else in the conference every other year, for a total of 9 conference games. In basketball, you play your division members twice, and everyone else once a year. That gives a total of 18 conference games. (Yes, Coach K will sign off on that one) That format leaves no need for ‘cross division rivals’, as everyone’s rival is already in their division.

It shows a lot that with all the internet rumors about conference expansion, none of what ‘insiders’ predicted has happened yet, but the ACC was quite proactive. The ACC has just ensured they’ll be around for the long haul, and VaTech wisely made the right move years ago by securing their rightful home in the ACC. Thankfully, the responsible people at VT didn’t just focus on football glamour, but understood the big picture.

  14. NewTech Fan | September 18, 2011 at 10:42 am

Eagle….this was yet another stepping stone for the undefeated season….they cant all be pretty but lets see..I believe that a W shows in the win column again…if it’s 1 or 50 points that Tech usually wins by. A 3-0 start is what you have look it,study it, worship it. I guess your what a closet Hoos fan. Now the Hoos can shut up….U lost 2-1 that should have been 1-2.

  15. dave t. | September 18, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Loser VT fans love a CUPCAKE victory…..They waste their money to watch an average team barely beat CUPCAKES every year..With no other sports to excel in then this must be all they have?..Maybe they can schedule Sisters of the Poor next year!!!!!!!Poooooor little chokies idiots..

  16. Marked Man (Mark) | September 18, 2011 at 3:27 pm

ok dave, who do you suggest? UVA ?!?!

  17. Marked Man (Mark) | September 18, 2011 at 3:32 pm

dave t. sounds like a UVA homer.
They do excel in crew though!!

  18. Travis Williams | September 18, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Be fair Dave, who doesn’t love cupcakes? They are all the goodness of real cake without having to pick up a knife and aside from that little bit of cake that always gets stuck in the paper, there is no downside.

In a football sense, playing teams considered “cupcakes” allow teams to fine tune a few things without having to roll out every trick in their play books. Every team, on every level, does it. Everyone loves cupcakes.

  19. Eagle | September 18, 2011 at 5:54 pm

tech could of not beat one team that was on tv the other day. all i hear is that no-one will play them. that is an excuse every year. gauranted 10 wins each season. no, not a hoo’s fan either. just someone thats been there done that. out of 120 teams listed, tech is ranked 100 on strenght of schedule, 83 on toughness of schedule. this is what elite teams do? do your homework. facts are facts. i guess these wins give fans something to brag about? i just wish they would go to the SEC. again, they can be the bully’s in the ACC, can’t do it against teams outside of conference. example LSU, Stanford, Boise State. enough said. go hokies!

  20. Eagle | September 18, 2011 at 9:10 pm

also vt is the only BCS school that did not schedule a top 25 school for 2011. they should run the table? go hokies!!

  21. The other Tony | September 18, 2011 at 10:13 pm

I see the hoo people coming out with their drooling comments. WHEN was the last time they actually beat a good team, and WHEN was the last time they beat the Hokies ???? So long ago that I forgot the year, was it in this decade ??? Maybe one time at best . Just get back to the rowing or another “big time sport ” ?????????

  22. Marked Man (Mark) | September 19, 2011 at 2:33 pm

Say, what ‘Top 25′ school did Ohio St. schedule this year??

  23. hokie24 | September 20, 2011 at 12:19 pm

I see a couple of top 25 teams on VT’s schedule… Clemson, GT… But as far as OOC games, this year’s schedule was a fluke. Look at our past few years of opening with national champions and top 5 teams, and look at our upcoming seasons with Alabama, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and others already scheduled. So we got one season of crappy OOC games… big deal. It’s definitely not the norm in Blacksburg.

Don’t UVA fans realize that when they bash VT’s “cupcake” schedule, that the Wahoos are the prettiest orange and blue cupcake in the bunch?
