OK, SO WHO ELSE WATCHED THAT GAME LAST NIGHT THINKING, “SOMEHOW, TECH IS GOING TO BLOW THIS”? No lead seems safe these days, but even the most cynical among us would have had a hard time envisioning exactly how the Hokies would fall to Florida State, missing seven of their final 10 free throws in a 48-47 defeat.
-The Hokies led by as many as 15 points in the second half and by six points with 1:09 to go. That’s when Dorenzo Hudson (an 84 percent free throw shooter) missed a pair from the line that likely would have put the game away. He wasn’t alone in his foul line woes, though, as Erick Green and Robert Brown also squandered chances to extend the lead from the stripe.
-Says coach Seth Greenberg: “We got the ball at the end of the game to … our best free-throw shooters. They didn’t make them. I thought the guys I had with the ball at the end of the game were just going to finish the game off. But they didn’t. It’s real simple. We step up and make free throws, the game’s over. Those kids played their hearts out. They showed great courage. … They didn’t make a damn free throw, unfortunately.”
-Carter famously started the game-winning rally in Game 6 of the 1996 World Series with a two-out single.Former Mets pitcher Ron Darling told Kirkjian: “Kid never swore, never. He’d say ‘Gosh darn’ and ‘Jeez.’ Because of his religious beliefs, he never swore — and that was rare on that team,” Darling said. “But when he got to first base in the 10th inning, the late Bill Robinson, who was our first-base coach, told me that Kid told him, ‘There’s no way I’m making the last f—— out.’ That’s the competitor he was.”

MORE COLLEGE BASKETBALL
-Duke erases a 20-point deficit to beat N.C. State 78-73.
-Maryland beats Boston College 81-65.
The results speak for themselves. Career .580 coach. Thank you SG, you brought VT back to acceptability and you have maintained your career .580 record at VT. Now we want to trade up to get to .750, year in and year out. You know, George Mason and VCU have not only made it to the dance while you have been at VT, well, uh, they made it to the final 4.
And you, Coach G, ain’t even made it to the final 4 of the NIT.
Sorry Coach, we can do better for $1.2M a year. Or, we can accomplish .580 with a lot less pay.
BTW, is it over for Moir and Dunagan at RC? Has the game passed them by?
-From Greg Bowyer: UVA will be on the bubble by the time Selection Sunday rolls around. Tough home games and losable road games on the horizon. Could come down to the game at the Cassell next week. Hokies could return the favor the Cavs paid them last year with a sweep. Two losses to a so-called “terrible” Tech team could do them in.
-Jeremy Lin plays tonight against New Orleans. Once again, no regular TV for this one.
NAME THAT TUNE
-Let’s put the cowboy hat back on.
If I should ever start forgetting
I’ll turn the lights off one by one
So you can see that I agree it’s over
But until then I want you to know
If you look south, you’ll see a glow
That’s me waiting at home each night to hold ya
