The Hokies’ spring game in six words

No standard briefing today; we’ll crank it back up tomorrow. But given that the big local event this week is the Tech spring game (69 degrees with scattered T-storms is the forecast right now), I figured we’d get your six-word story on it.

Could be what you’re looking for, your tailgate situation, your prediction on who the breakout player will be, your lack of interest in it…wherever you want to go with it.

I will go first: Both teams set records for sacks

Let’s see what you’ve got.

Wet tailgate means soggy burger buns.

I`m thinking that whether watching this in person or on ESPN 3 it`s going to be obvious that the “O” needs help in the trenches. So: “Stiney, adopt some of Foster`s kids”

Sadness seeing Wilson in street clothes

1st shot – If it is raining, not going.

2nd shot – If it is nice, just tailgating.

Bottom line for me – it’s a dang practice, and me and Allen Iverson have the same thought on practice. It just kills me to see people drive 4, 5, 6 hours for a practice, spend all that money, waste all that time.

Me, I won’t drive 5 minutes across town unless I have absolutely nothing else to do. I’ve seen the scrimmages so far, ‘cuz I didn’t have nothin’ else to do. I’m not sure I need to see any more. Call me in the fall.

    Six-words:

Sack happy and red zone woes.

Ga. Tech is all that matters. p.s.- I hate Paul Johnson. I hope the hokies chop block his arrogant ass all the way back to Atlanta. forgive me people for saying that but I feel much better now-Yeahhh!

An opportunity for unneeded costly injuries.

  9. Carl | April 19, 2012 at 12:25 pm

VT will have their hands full with Georgia Tech, especially without receivers like Coale and Boykin. Logan Thomas becomes very mediocre without talent backing him up. The Hokies were sooooooo fortunate to beat GT last year, all because of a defensive penalty by the Jackets that changed the game. VT may be better this year but I just can’t see it, they have not been that impressive in the spring workouts. But as usual, the Hokie faithful will have their team already playing in another national championship game. LOL The big question is whether VT can ever beat a top 5 team.

    I’m with Rick H.

6 words – “doesn”t mean anything, not gonna go”

I’ve been to several and it is just another scrimmage. I’ve watched guys in the spring game who I really thought were going to be top players but when the season roles around they are unable to produce. One spring I thought George Bell outplayed Brandon Ore. But, due to his injuries, Bell was never able to get to top form.

Plus it looks like rain. Not breaking out the rain suit until fall.

To answer some of yesterday’s choices:

Vick over Humes (but I did like Cedric)

Like Thursday games but prefer Saturday afternoon. Love the 3:30 kickoff.

Not a big tennis fan but soccer puts me to sleep. I think it’s a generational thing. People my age did grow up playing soccer and know little about the rules and strategies. Younger people like soccer because they played the game.
Not a big Taco Bell fan but can’t stand to even drive by LJS due to the smell of grease.

Make that “didn’t grow up playing soccer”. Gotta remember to proofread.

“Hopeful sight & great sound-Enter Offense” I know, 2`s 2 many but raining and have 2 much time on my hands.

This blog’s collective hatred of Long John Silver’s is appalling. Shame on all of you. And here I thought you were my friends. :)

  14. hokie24 | April 19, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Carl… that’s not “the big question” for any team. That’s a lame stat that folks try to put emphasis on when they have no idea what a good win percentage against top-5 teams would be.

  15. hokie24 | April 19, 2012 at 2:01 pm

I like Long John Silver’s… but I can only take it in spaced-out doses. If I eat there once, I need to wait a month or two before I do it again.

Plus, the idea of mixing doritos and tacos sounds awesome. I still haven’t tried those yet.

  16. Ralph | April 19, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Question of the Day: Should you only tailgate with Long John Silver`s when it`s really cold out?.

  17. Peppers Ferry | April 19, 2012 at 3:17 pm

Same, sad, story, Saturday, Stiney, SUX .

  18. scott whitaker | April 19, 2012 at 3:18 pm

hokie24 Well said. I doubt anyone’s record against top 5 teams is very good. That’s why the teams are top 5 I guess. Of course VT’s does leave a big bunch to be desired. I do know, however, what VT’s record against GT is since joining the ACC and that would be 6-2. And if it weren’t for that one bad call in that game back then it would be…

  19. hokie24 | April 19, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Exactly, scott whitaker! The top 5 wouldn’t be top 5 unless they were winning most of the time.

How many times has VT played against a top 5 team when VT was also a top 5 team at the same time?

A team’s record vs top-5 teams when they are themselves a top-5 team carries a little more relevancy, in my opinion.

  20. RP | April 19, 2012 at 5:22 pm

I love Long John Silvers! My wife & I were recently talking about our childhoods — neither of our families went out to eat much at the time (mine was in PA & hers was here), but apparently both of our families considered trips to Long John Silvers to be a huge treat. I think it may be the only seafood that I ate until I was a teenager.

I’m sure it’s not healthy, but I still like to ask for extra “crunchies”, as we call them…

  23. dave | April 19, 2012 at 5:57 pm

Boring offense, dominant defense, nap inducing

  24. abdnva | April 19, 2012 at 6:20 pm

Six words? From Frank Beamer – ‘(Sniff) Bigger paycheck, same (sniff) results…’

That is – if you count nasal noises as words. If not, it would be – ‘(sniff) Ten wins, or (sniff) eleven this year (sniff)?…’

  25. abdnva | April 19, 2012 at 6:24 pm

As for the universal dismissal of Long John Silvers on the other thread, AMc, why would anybody enjoy paying $9 for $4 worth of grease? Gee whiz, LJS makes Arby’s look like a bargain outfit. Shouldn’t that explain it all?

  26. ken | April 19, 2012 at 8:15 pm

Five rusher max still torments offenses

  27. Carl | April 19, 2012 at 10:20 pm

At least 3 of those games with Georgia Tech were decided by critical calls, VT is very fortunate to be 6 and 2 against them. I know Beamer bellyached about the chop blocks but let us also consider the dirty playing by VT over these past several years plus home-cooking officiating in Blacksburg, especially against UNC.
