"The skeletons will be rattling their chains" at Rory.

-This tends to be in line with the media storylines heading into this one: Tiger, Rory and Phil dueling it out for glory.

-We all remember McIlory’s final round flop last year. I like this colorful line in this story: The skeletons will be rattling their chains as McIlroy, who frittered away a four-shot final-day lead, returns to the scene of his collapse, and once again plays alongside Angel Cabrera (for the first two days, at least), who was his companion on the final day in 2011.

-Turns out that article originated in the U.K. I love the way British describe things; I could spend all day listening to Ian Darke describe what he had for lunch. The next line in that story: However, after the subsequent US Open, which McIlroy won at a canter, there is now no reason to doubt his resolve.

-So, what does your hunch tell you? Here’s what mine does: Luke Donald, at 14-to-1, will win the thing. I’m going with the hot hand. I don’t trust Tiger right now. Rattlin’ skeletons scare me off Rory. Phil…probably a good pick but odds look inflated, which scares me. How about you? See any good longshots?

WHERE TO, WILSON?
-Andy looks at how some of the draft gurus view Tech prospects view David Wilson and Jayron Hosley

LIFT THE LID
-The Marlins open their new park tonight against St. Louis (7 p.m., ESPN). Your scheduled starters are Kyle Lohse and Josh Johnson.

READER COMMENT O’ THE DAY
-It’s back! From Ralph:

I was still a little groggy this morning when my dog We Go brought me the morning paper. On the sports page of the N&A it read Ralph Sampson to be Indicted. I thought oh no Ralph`s late again. Then the coffee kicked in and I saw it said Ralph Sampson to be Inducted. Sorry. Way to go Ralph, way to go.

“Here`s to you Mr. Robinson” Thomas Robinson. Now there is a guy you can be happy for. Last year his 9 year old sister calls him from D.C. to tell him that their 45 year old mother has died. A month after two grandparents passed away. He made a vow to his deceased mother that he would take care of the little girl. A certain lottery pick, that vow will now be realized. KU stood behind him thru all this, but now it is time to move on. Players leave early for the pros for many reasons. As for Thomas` reason..well, I`m glad he won`t be in Kansas anymore.

    Justin Rose or Hunter Mahan

  2. Trevor | April 4, 2012 at 7:44 am

Tiger Wood is such a draw! The media’s obsessions over that jerk is having me reach for the barf bag. Mr. Woods is the reason I don’t watch the game that’s called golf. In fact, golf have to on my top five lists of boring sports to watch, and a cure for insomnia.

  3. TomW | April 4, 2012 at 7:54 am

I’ll take Freddy. Coming off of a Seniors win, he’s won at Augusta before, certainly has the length and if he can putt. I like his chances to do it, unless of course he doesn’t, then I’m going with Tiger.

    Beck – “Where It’s At”

I’ll take Justin Rose. He is playing really well right now. But more importantly, if anyone wants to take Tiger Woods and give me the field, I’ll take the bet for $100!

Predicted last summer on twitter that Tiger would get his act together over the off-season and win the 2012 Masters. So, I’ve gotta stick with it. Second part of the prediction was it would be the last major victory of his career. Have to see how that one goes. At least he has put himself back in contention to win. But I will not be rooting for him. I would rather be wrong than have him ever win another major.

  6. Trevor | April 4, 2012 at 8:13 am

I have concluded that Tiger Wood is as important to golf as the BCS is to college football.

On a positive note, Nike have created new uniforms for all 32 NFL teams. I haven’t seen the new look, I hear it’s more swanky, but not as eccentric as Oregon’s.

  7. Other John | April 4, 2012 at 8:19 am

Where it’s At…Beck. I have Odelay in my car CD player right now, actually…

  8. Other John | April 4, 2012 at 8:26 am

I will agree with Trevor on Tiger/golf to an extent. Before everything blew up, I liked watching him play because it was entertaining enough. Now that he is exposed for the fraud he was, I have no use for him. I didn;t watch much golf before, but I watch even less now. I love to play golf, but watching on TV is not something I care to do. Still can’t anyway…no TV yet.

Opening Day is here though for baseball, and I am excited for this season. My early calls for the year would be NY, Detroit, and Texas as AL Division Champs, with Boston and LA getting the 2 Wild Card slots. In the NL I like Philly, St Louis, and Colorado as the Division Champs, with Cincinatti and San Fran as the Wild Cards. I think I’m roughly grasping on the NL though, I don’t pay as much attention to that side as I do the NL, being a Tigers fan.

  9. Ralph | April 4, 2012 at 8:26 am

Need two more for a foresome? Ask Fred Couples.

  10. Rick H. | April 4, 2012 at 8:32 am

I’ll take Bubba Watson, just because I like his name. That sounds like somebody you’d drink cheap beer with in a really rough biker bar.

  11. Aaron McFarling | April 4, 2012 at 8:42 am

O.G. and O.J. score. Oh, my! And for the late arrivers: Oh, well.

  12. RP | April 4, 2012 at 8:52 am

Hunter’s definitely got the hot “Mahand” coming into the week. *rimshot*

  13. HokieAl | April 4, 2012 at 9:10 am

I knew I wouldn’t get the song becasue it’s “too easy”! “I’ve got two turntables and a microphone.”

I’m going with Bubba or Ian Poulter. I like Bubba’s length and go for broke attitude. And Poulter’s pants are straight out of the ’70s. He could be the first Masters champ in plain since Jack. My greatest hope for the Masters is that Tigger doesn’t make the cut. Then I can watch on Sunday without having Jim Nantz give me a Tiger update every 2 minutes.

I like OJ’s calls for the year, although the Phillies are going to struggle to get runs and Boston will likely implode, again. I’d say the Braves are the best threat to Philly and the Rays may knock Boston out again.

The Orioles showing that there isn’t even hope on Opening Day are starting Arrieta, who had season ending elbow surgery last year and was in the minors the season before that. I know the Oriole Way relies on growing talent on the farm and I like Arrieta’s stuff (he should be a fine pitcher), but geez, I would have hoped for a better number 1 starter. Jake may get there one day, but if he’s the best in the rotation right now, then the O’s will be lucky to win 70 games.

Although it’s not a big spectator sport, a shout out to 40-0 Baylor Women’s Basketball.

  14. Aaron McFarling | April 4, 2012 at 9:21 am

Arrieta is the next Mike Mussina. I promise you. Stuff, poise, everything. He’s the least of the O’s worries — but yeah, would like to have a guy with a little deeper resume toeing the slab in the opener. The good news is the opponent is the Twins, who will rival the O’s for badness.

  15. Other John | April 4, 2012 at 9:27 am

HokieAl, I thought about putting the Rays ahead of the BoSox, but I think they won’t implode late in the season under Valentine. If they implode, it will happen early. With the Braves, I’d love to see them return to being a contender, but I just think Philly’s pitching will help them get the Division again. But, if the Braves pull a surprise on me, I’d enjoy rooting for my hometown team, being a Georgia native.

  16. RP | April 4, 2012 at 9:41 am

I’m a Phillies fan & will definitely pull for them, but Mike & Mike mentioned this morning that the Yankees have won the world series the past 6 consecutive times that Kentucky won the NCAA basketball championship. Pretty strong trend there…

  17. Ralph | April 4, 2012 at 10:29 am

I am really hoping Mickelson will be putting on the green Sunday evening. I can never get my fill of that guy. The anti-Tiger. Great with the fans. On the green might be his downfall though. He goes thru stages of just giving lip service to 5 footers. It`s setting up for him though. Course will be wet which will favor the longer hitters even more. The pins will be easier to go at and who does that better then Phil. He and Bones know exactly where to hit every shot. Put me down for +1000.

  18. justafan | April 4, 2012 at 10:30 am

I’m with HokieAl in hoping Tiger misses the cut, but I think he’ll make it. I get sick of the media fawning over Tiger as well. I had always heard he had no class and after reading the Rick Reilly article, I’d say that was confirmed. Like I said, I think he will make the cut, but I don’t think he’ll win the toooonamint (I miss Hootie). Would love to see Phil win again but would take the field against Tiger any day.

O’s will never climb out of their hole until a new owner takes over. Angelos has to be one of the worst owners in MLB. Maybe he’ll see how well McCort made out in LA and decide to sell. He won’t get anywhere near 2 BIL but he would still make a hefty profit. Need some big money guys to come in and I imagine they would want to get Ripken involved the way the new Dodger owners are getting Magic.

    AMc,

VT knocked of the powerful Wofford College Terriers yesterday 13-4!!! Looks like they are about to get on a run to the ACC tourney and the tournament championship to get into the NCAA’s…

Coach Hughes will start his Greenbergesque lobbying tomorrow…

  20. Aaron McFarling | April 4, 2012 at 10:33 am

justafan — I’ve been hoping that MegaMillions jackpot winner in Baltimore Co. would consider buying the club.

  21. crooked road | April 4, 2012 at 11:15 am

AMc, the O’s will never be good in our lifetime. I’m assuming you’re in the ‘pushing 40′ range. Angelos’ sons will be around forever to cluster up the mess that is.

I was fortunate to see the Orioles as a stellar small market franchise. One that did things the right way, just like the Colts. it was a glorious time. It is now gone forever.

I don’t need to add commentary to those two lines, as we all know what happened.

  22. dave | April 4, 2012 at 12:37 pm

All then guys hating on Tiger thought he was the best thing since sex and ice cream before he took the hit in his personal life. The guy screwed up bigtime and has fought his way back through the personal problems and the physical problems to be a contender again. After Nicklaus and Palmer, he
has been the best thing for professional golf and essentially kept the PGA tour alive for about twelve years. And any golfers who feel they have the right to judge him need to remember how much money he put in their pockets by his presence on the tour and immense TV interest that resulted from it. I hope he wins it again and if he doe, it won’t be his last major if hi achilles holds up. That said, my longshot pick would be Nick Watney.

  23. hokie24 | April 4, 2012 at 12:53 pm

HokieAl gets post of the day, no question!

“I like Bubba’s length and go for broke attitude. And Poulter’s pants are straight out of the ’70s.”

How can you top that on a sports blog?

  24. Ralph | April 4, 2012 at 12:55 pm

I don`t know about you guys, but here in the other `burg I can always tell when Spring is in the air; in fact, I can almost smell it. Greener grass? Longer days? Birds singing? No. no and no. The Port-O-Johns are out at the soft ball fields. That is my true harbinger.

  25. crooked road | April 4, 2012 at 8:03 pm

This will get lost in the shuffle, but I have to laugh about all the handwringing over Augusta National and the question of female membership. I just loved Billy Payne’s statement on the subject.
