Giants on Wilson: “He is [Tech's] offense, and I think he can do the same thing here”
Salem Red Sox report with bonus quotes from last night can be found here.
David Wilson goes to the Giants with overall pick No. 32 — the last of the first round. Andy Bitter’s got you covered here. Here’s the first reaction from the New York Times about the acquisition.
Says Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross, regarding Wilson’s role with the Hokies: “He is their offense, and I think he can do the same thing here.”
I’m thinking he’ll be pretty popular with the New York media, just as he was with the Virginia media. Good place to land.
At last count, there were 4,672,176 NFL draft experts in this country now. I do not purport to be one; my interest pretty much lies in where the Tech and UVa guys — or anybody who went to high school around here — winds up. So I’ll turn this one over to you guys:
-Anything surprise you?
-Did your team get what it was looking for in the first round?
-Who made the best pick outside of the top two?
-Who made a pick they’re really going to regret?
-I was at the ballpark and couldn’t watch. Any good lowlights from the TV coverage?

Dallas made the best surprise pick for what they have needed since Darren Woodson retired. That secondary has had me walking away from the television for years. Congratulations to David! I can’t stand the Giants but I will always pull for him to have a great career!
After the Seahawks’ pick (an undersized WVU player with a history of trouble with the law), I’m hoping that they pull of the ‘double’ and take J. Hosley this weekend…
My Panthers landed Kuckley, and I was thrilled! He should make an immediate impact from Day 1. Biggest surprise…Seahawks drafting Bruce Irvin, and Tweeters going “Who?”
Best highlight according to Tweeters…handshake between Roger Goddell and Ingram. Said that Goddell had some “hoods” in him.
I disagree that Wilson was Tech’s offense. Sure, he provided a lot of highlight reel, but he was one of the key players. Logan Thomas is the other along with Coale, Boykin, and even Josh Oglesby. I don’t think Wilson would be an every down back, but his speed will force teams to respect the Giants’ rushing attack.
I think the Chiefs probably made the worse pick by drafting Poe. Some of the things I’ve read about him wasn’t very glowing. He comes from C-USA and didn’t really dominate according to scouts.
The other risk/reward pick was the Jets drafting Coples.
He will be a great asset to the Giants as long as he can get the fumbling under control. Hopefully he will fare better than Kevin Jones and Ryan Williams did. It is so different in the NFL as opposed to the college ranks. It will be interesting to see how he can perform at the Pro level; he really didn’t do that well last year against quality teams like Clemson.
Goodall may have gotten booed to begin the show but he sure got enough hugs to make up for it. Looked like a big family reunion out there…well, maybe not. Not a big Giants fan, but I was glad they picked DW. He could fit in right away plus they will be on TV a lot. As he was in Blacksburg, he will be a plus for Tech in New York.
Trevor,
The Jets have been making draft mistakes for years. Blair Thomas, Johnny “lam” Jones, Jeff Lageman, Chad Pennington, the list goes on.
The only thing going for the Jets is that they are undefeated in the Super Bowl.
I’m pretty happy with my Packers selection of Nick Perry. With him on one side and Matthews on the other, they are going to cause some issues for people.
I think the Wilson pick is a good one for the Giants. If he stays healthy he should impress some people with his speed. One thing he will have to adjust to is the speed of the other players though. The NFL defenses are a lot faster than what he’s used to facing.
Suprises: YES. A Hokie star to the right team, right away. The kid is really blessed. I thought this was the best fit in the NFL for him.
My Team: Fantasy football changed all that for me. I no longer root for any one team. I will always root AGAINST the Cowgirls so long as Jones is the owner. His pain gives me joy (schadenfruede).
Pick to Regret: Considering the overall odds of a QB making it in the NFL and balancing it against the price they paid I have to think the Skins are the most exposed. I would pick RGIII #2 as well. I don’t know that I would bet the ranch on him. Lots of #1 QBs looked good but didn’t make it at all (the list is a mile long) or took years to develop or land on the right team (Plunkett, Eli). If RGIII has a Vinny Testeverde – like career (really good – not great) will he have justified the price?
Lowlights: Any time Jon Gruden opens his mouth. I can’t believe they dumped Jaws for this guy. Some have a fresh approach and wear on you (Madden). Some guys you hate right away (Cosell). Some guys are like music to your ears (Summerall). Some guys become so identified with the game you long for their return (Keith Jackson). Some guys grate like nails on the blackboard (Gruden). I can’t listen to Dickie V call a basketball game without throwing up. Same with Gruden. Sorry, their magic is lost on me.
Genius—Lets hold off on judging Ryan William’s career just yet. He was hurt in the pre-season and was out for the year with a torn Achilles tendon.
I wish I could give you some of the lowlights of the TV coverage, but it put me to sleep by about the 6th pick, I apparently rolled over on the remote, changed the channel and woke up to one of those Brazilian butt workout infomercials about 1:00 AM. That wasn’t so bad, though.
Best I can offer was a shot of them carrying two of the hats in, in what amounted to the trophy case that Tech has for football – big, clear plastic cases, like they were something really important. They had probably just run down to the Lids store in Times Square to buy the hats, truth be known.
Here is what I want to know, just how long does Goodell have to goof off in the back to give somebody time to make up the team jersey with the guys name on the back of it?
Rick H, those Brazilian butt workout informercials need a channel all their own. They seem to work too.
Zman, what about the Fish taking Tannelhill? I agree that RGIII is walking into a tough spot. The Redskins are expecting to be an instant contender.
Luck is definitely going to be under the microscope. He’s replacing a legend, even though the Colts are in rebuilding phase, but I think he might get a pass.
Since when is a 6’2″ 245# linebacker “undersized”. The kid from WVU does have legal issues but I don’t think undersized at LB is one. Maybe at DE, but not at LB. I noticed even the analysts mentioned it but he seems the right size to me. The Seahawks have a history of “surprise” picks. Hope Wilson pans out, good person, hard worker, etc., could have used one more year of seasoning but it worked out for him. Hosley could get lucky, the biggest CB I saw drafted was 188# so if his stupid decision doesn’t get in the way. he might get drafted within the next 2 rounds.
Not a whole lot surprised me after looking at the results. The smart teams made smart picks, and the bone-headed teams did likewise.
I’m thinking the Lions did well getting an OT…more protection for Stafford, and hopefully it will help the run game so a more balanced attack or better play-action passing can take place. They were too one-dimensional last year.
Outside of the top 2, I think the best pick might be Richardson to the Browns…they need that kind of a player in their division. I don’t know that he turns them into contenders because they have a lot of other issues, but he should be part of a Cleveland resurgence. I also like Wilson to the Giants…great guy and player, and a good value at the end of the first round. I don;t see a downside for the Giants or Wilson in that pick at all.
Pick to regret? That’s easy…Dallas. They picked up another misfit, seems to be their M.O.
ZMan brought up the fantasy aspect of football…for me, it hasn’t changed my team loyalties any…I’m a Detroit fan through-and-through, for Hockey, Football, and Baseball. And I play fantasy sports for all 3 as well. I usually try to snag a few players off my teams, but I want to win my leagues too, so if my teams stink, I avoid the players, but still root for them.
I remember a debate on the Scott Van Pelt Show a while back about fantasy sports and how it impacted people’s views on the game outcomes. Most people who called in said a win by their fantasy team was more satisfying than a win for their favorite team. I guess I can see why, especially if you play in a money league, but I still prefer to see the Detroit teams win, even if it costs my fantasy team.
The one thing fantasy sports have done for me though, is I pay more attention to the other teams than I used to, because if i have a player on one of those teams, I’ll want to see how they’re doing. But for me, that’s about the only way fantasy sports has changed how I watch sports.
Rick I was wondering the same thing about the jersey and the names. Somebody should check out that operation too and make sure its not a bunch of little kids back there being forced to sew quickly or they don’t eat.
I also agree about the hats. All of those hats are the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. None of the guys drafted would wear those hats.
DW to the Giants with the last pick of the first round is awesome. Wilson can go in and be just another weapon on an already loaded Super Bowl champion team. I’m sure Tom Coughlin liked Wilson’s great work ethic and character. It’s a great pick all-around for Wilson, the Giants and the Hokies.
Correction Kenny: Ryan ruptured his Patellar Tendon in his right knee…not the Achilles. Hope he gets back to form this year.
latest odds from vegas just posted Jason Pierre-Jones as a 6.5/5 favorite over Wilson in camp in back flip competition
Sounds like Bobby Lutz is a prime candidate to follow Seth Greenberg. He’s already interviewed once, and also has a potential assistant coach he’d bring with him. If Weaver is willing to pay the money.
