Logan Thomas: ‘Not a butterfly in my stomach’
Greetings from Greensboro, where were about halfway through Day 1 of the ACC Football Kickoff. Virginia Tech sent quarterback Logan Thomas and defensive back Kyle Fuller as its representatives; UVa’s Perry Jones and Steve Greer will speak a little after 5 p.m. today.
Thomas drew a huge crowd of reporters, as you might expect, but handled everything well as usual.
“I’m extremely comfortable,” he said. “Last year I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect. This year, there’s not a butterfly in my stomach, not a worry in my mind, nothing. Just excited to get the season started. I know what this team can do, know what I can do, and I’m excited to see what we can offer Week 1.”
I’m an offensive line nerd, as most of you guys know, so I asked him several questions about that unit, which returns just one starter (center Andrew Miller). Thomas said he was disappointed that the spring game got rained out, because he felt like the group up front was going to allay a lot of concerns with its play in front of a crowd.
“Throughout the spring, they have gotten better and better every single week,” Thomas said. “Every single scrimmage, you could see the difference. The last scrimmage that we had, the defense was sending the house at us. We were picking it up, we were able to get the ball out of my hand quick, picking up big gains. That’s what you want to see and that’s what we were doing.”
Seeing the light come on for those guys, so to speak, gave him a jolt of excitement.
“Definitely so, because I know how I felt when the light finally came on for me,” Thomas said. “You know you’re doing good when Coach [Curt] Newsome’s back there yelling – but he’s back there yelling because he’s happy. When he sees it and I get to see it, that gives me the extra confidence that I don’t have to worry about it.”
Andy’s got some other stuff on Thomas on his blog here. Check it out.

I blame Lee Corso for the rain on the spring game. I guess he was so excited about the possibility of returning to Blacksburg on Labor Day that God decided to rain out the spring game.
I kid, I kid.
I hope that Thomas’ evaluation of the offensive line is spot on. He’s the one that is going to rely on them to keep him upright.
If Thomas was to host an eating contest with the offensive linemen, who would win it? I’m curious, Aaron, and so are your readers.
Trevor you are right, I’ve been reading a whole lot of negative comments on this blog, Andy’s and others about how bad the O-line is going to be this year from people who probably have little or no first hand knowledge. If Logan has no concerns then neither do I. As you say, he’s the one who will be taking the hits so if he is confident in them, we as fans should be too. As far as the eating contest, have you ever noticed that the winners of those hotdog eating contests are always some small, skinny guy or gal? If Thomas’ hosted one, I’d bet that somebody like Donaldven Manning (5’9, 155) would probably show up and win it all!
Dan, my only hope is that by going against first and second teamers on the defensive line, the o-line would be toughen up and ready to handle whatever defensive coordinators may throw against them. Ultimately, it is up to Miller to recognize what the defense’s lining up and call it out. Thomas is going to have to pick it up as well. Somehow I doubt that grandpa Groh is going to have GT ready for Thomas unless he decide to go dirty, and find a way to decapitate Thomas below the knees.
Come to think of, you are right, it seem the skinny person with bottomless stomach wins those eating contest. I have never understood why anybody, for whatever reasons, would stoop themselves that low, and torture their own body to that kind of festivity.
By the way, Aaron, I give you plus-100 points for giving us lesson in the anatomy of a butterfly. I never knew!
