Saturday: Back on course (live Greenbrier updates)

U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson finishes at 14-under and will take a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final round.

Troy Kelly is in the clubhouse at 12-under after shooting a 62. He’s got a two-stroke lead.

TV coverage has started on WDBJ. Troy Kelly birdies No. 16 and takes sole possession of the lead at 11-under. He’s 7-under today.

Ran into Frank Beamer, wife Cheryl and daughter Casey outside. They’re having a good time, they said.

Ted Potter Jr. birdies three in a row on the back 9 and has pulled into a tie for the lead at 10-under with Kelly and Webb Simpson.

Troy Kelly is 6-under for his round today through 14 and is your new leader at 10-under.

If you’re heading to any of the five-game SalemSox homestand that begins tonight, the Salem Fair is still in town. Park at the GE lot and take the shuttle bus to the ballpark. It runs from 5-11 p.m. nightly.

Great stuff from Randy today on Mr. Unclickable, Charlie Beljan. Seems very much like I expected him to be.

The Greenbrier Classic soldiers on today without Tiger and Phil, who missed the cut in the same tournament for the first time as professionals. Heading up there today with editor Steve Hemphill and will post a few nuggets during “moving day.” Believe Randy will be in the saddle, too.

Live leaderboard is here.

Compliments to RK for his Beljan article. FAR more interesting than yet another recitation of – ‘I was close this week. The course wasn’t what I expected (after 16 years on tour). I just need to work on my (fill in the blank). It’s coming together…’

Whether Charlie wins or flames out spectacularly, he’ll always have Friday as a positive memory. Sometimes, those clicking points are all it takes to boost a career.

Now we get that Tiger/Phil were paid a 2.5 million “appearance” fee. Whoa, any truth in that’n AMac?

CBSSports.com quoted anonymous sources with that figure, yes. Here’s that story. I wouldn’t doubt it.

You might say Justice can’t buy a break.

Steve Elling seems like a bitter hack who is jealous his name is not as popular as Charlie Beljan.

While Justice ‘may have’ given back door money to Tiger and Phil, why is it that the WVa tourney is the only one where this is an issue? Let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen elsewhere. I really don’t know Elling’s background, he is so insignificant I couldn’t find it on Google, but he seems to me to be an urban dweeb who dislikes having to drive where there are trees and grass in order to reach a golf course to cover.

Let’s hear Elling spew sarcasm when he’s in Texas or Florida or California or any number of more ‘socially accepted’ locales. I’ve never heard of him prior to this rant, and I won’t be following him on his defective twitter or facebook accounts. What a loser.

The guy almost made me angry with his stupidity… LOL!

FTR, I really dislike virtually everything WVa. The Greenbrier is a success story, though, and should be celebrated. It’s not perfect, but it is exponentially more positive than negative. I’d say the same thing if it were located in Idaho, it’s not about proximity. Heck, don’t get me started on how great Herb Kohler’s Whistling Straits is, as well as his other courses. It’s about bootstrapping up a region that desperately needs it, and about how some ‘critics’ never can see beyond their local bridges.

Nice line, Aaron. Guess the question now is do Tiger and Phil have to give half the money back that they “might” have gotten?

interesting story a-mac. maybe justice is smart and made the bulk of the money before the tournament even began through corporate sponsors and ticket sales. who knows? anyway i want to thank you finally for the story years ago on sammy atkins. the old shortstop is still kickin. he was my coach back in the day. how old is he now, probably 70? he really loved your story on him. you are a good man. thanks
