Thursday: Sims City; Name That Tune that baffled me

THE VIRGINIA QB COMPETITION JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT MORE INTERESTING. The NCAA grants a waiver to Alabama transfer Phillip Sims, allowing him to play immediately this fall rather than sitting out a year.

Here’s his 2011 bio copied and pasted from ‘Bama official site:

2011 (FRESHMAN): Phillip Sims, the talented signal-caller has split time with AJ McCarron at quarterback … seen action in eight games and completed 64 percent of his passes for 163 yards … has thrown two interceptions. Kent State: Came off the bench in the fourth series … completed 7-of-14 passes for 73 yards and two picks … also rushed three times with a long run of 15 yards. Penn State: Took over on the final drive of the game as the Tide closed out the No. 23 Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, 27-11. North Texas: Connected on 6-of-8 passes for 49 yards, coming off the bench in the game’s fourth series … completed his longest pass to date with a 19-yard strike that moved the chains for the Crimson Tide. Arkansas: Came off the bench to finish the game in the win against the Razorbacks. Vanderbilt: Was a perfect 3-for-3 off the bench, throwing for 29 yards. Mississippi: Came off the bench to complete one pass on one attempt for two yards. Tennessee: Came off the bench and was 1-for-2 for 10 yards against the Volunteers.

SEE, I’M LOOKING AT THAT, AND I’M WONDERING WHY SO MANY PEOPLE seem to think Michael Rocco’s a dead duck here. Does experience matter? Guess we’ll find out. The consensus seems to be that Rocco will be the starter in the opener, and beyond that, it’s anybody’s guess. Either way, the looking-over-your-shoulder process has begun.

NAME THAT TUNE

-Heard this song on XM last night. It’s a good one for this exercise. Because I’ve heard it at least 100 times — it’s a quintessential mid-’90s anthem, after all, right in my wheelhouse — but I couldn’t come close to naming the title or artist. Can you?

Move aside
And let the man go through
Let the man go through
Move aside
And let the man go through
Let the man go through
Move aside
And let the man go through
Let the man go through
Move aside
And let the man go through
Let the man go through…

    Don’t be cruel, to a heart that’s true…

Here’s the best sports related story of the year, thus far…

Nicely done, Jeff. Early to rise, too.

Sims is so talented you have to give him a shot at the starting job. I don’t think he would have transfered if they had not at least told him he would be able to compete for the job. Not sure if Rocco is a dead duck or not but Rocco was rated #109 at qb coming out of high school and Sims was rated #1 by at least one service.

On another subject. I am really disappointed in the residents of Northwest not wanting soccer fields on the old Countryside property. I never really knew how lacking Roanoke was in athletic fields until my kids got old enough to play sports and I becam involved in youth athletics. The Roanoke Valley as a whole has a severe shortage of athletic fields and apart from the high schools you can find much nicer facilities in communities much smaller than the Roanoke Valley. Sports is good for the mind, body, and soul of these young boys and girls growing up and we should promote it. My involvement is in Roanoke County but I hate it for the kids in the city that the neighbors don’t want them to have soccer fields in Northwest.

Have no idea on the song but could it be an omen for the other burg`s Michael Rocco?

Day of reckoning have come to Penn State. Will Joe Paterno’s legacy be undone today?

    Stay tuned.

  7. Say What? | July 12, 2012 at 8:29 am

What circumstance allowed Sims to be eligible this fall, anyway? Did he have to move back home because his 3rd cousin’s nephew was sick and he needed to take care of him, or something? Was it some kind of “hardship” waiver? Inquiring minds want to know; maybe the incoming VT basketball transfer can qualify for the same exemption!

It was Tyson’s entrance song for a while

  9. Joshua | July 12, 2012 at 10:34 am

Good link crooked road. I like how she is so matter of fact about the whole thing.

  10. Rick H. | July 12, 2012 at 10:55 am

I agree with crooked road, that is a classic sports story!

You all do realize what her motivation was, don’t you? The guy had to be a Dale, Jr. fan, and she wanted to keep him around until Jr. finally won one! Now they can bury the poor guy.

I gotta say, between he and her, it sounds like that was all they had, each other. I don’t talk with family all that often, but geez, I’d like to think somebody would show a little more concern than that if they hadn’t heard from me.

UVA is not good enough this year to endure a QB controversy. They lost far too many seniors last year, and will need to be filling some spots on the depth chart. They need a guy with snaps under his belt at QB – in the UVA system.

London would be nuts to use Sims over Rocco, in my opinion. He’d have to be mighty good for me to play him, and if he was mighty good . . . . . well, he’d be starting at ‘Bama, and not have had the need to transfer.

  12. Other John | July 12, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Sims has the name and the family genetics, but the numbers are not all that terribly impressive…yet. Rocco definitely has competition, but i agree…he’s not a goner. However, UVA has had such unreliable QB play lately that whomever winds up proving to be more prolific…or at least less mistake-prone, is going to be the guy for the Wahoos.

Can’t wait for baseball to resume tomorrow. I heard some interesting talk today about Cole Hamels and where he might be come August 1. A lot of the talk mentions the Rangers…since Hamels is on my fantasy team and is a no-cut player, I don’t like that. Texas heat wears guys down, and the competition he’d face in the AL is a lot stiffer than the NL. But, he would have a much stronger offense backing him up, so he might win a few more games. Regardless, the Rangers need to make a couple moves if they want to avoid becoming the Buffalo Bills of baseball…

  13. Zman | July 12, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I have XM, toom but listen to old guy stuff….

Maybe we’ll learn why Simms left ‘Bama? I know some wahoos will be sure he is the 2nd coming of RGIII.

  14. Bryan | July 12, 2012 at 8:21 pm

    Wahoooooowa!!!!

  15. Ron | July 12, 2012 at 9:43 pm

If Phillip Sims was a Chokie he would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

  16. Tom L | July 13, 2012 at 11:15 am

Sims is good but at Alabama there are probably 4-5 just as good or a little better. Being #2 at Bama wasn’t bad considering he was a freshman.People with talent don’t want to sit, they want to play. Guess he saw a better chance at that at UVA than at Ala.. Tech and UVA are lucky if they have one with that type of talent in-house, Ala has several. It’s a numbers game and the competition will make Rocco better or #2.

  17. old blue | July 13, 2012 at 2:16 pm

U Va is more than one player away from being a good team. Last year’s Tech game showed that clearly. It is beginning to look like the George Welsh era was an anomaly. Bring back the Pep Band.

  18. Trevor | July 13, 2012 at 3:56 pm

When UVa actually have a W against Tech, then I’ll consider them good. They haven’t beaten Tech in how many tries? Last year was a beat down.

I don’t know if Sims will elevate UVa’s offense, but it does make things interesting up there.

If not, then I guess London’s Bridge is going to fall down.

  19. Bryan | July 13, 2012 at 4:17 pm

@say what Sims’ father is ailing from a heart condition and had heart surgery at UVA and will receive treatments at UVA as well. It’s called a family medical hardship waiver. Why don’t you look into it before making sarcastic jokes about it.

  20. Bryan | July 13, 2012 at 4:18 pm

@Ron Agreed. If he was going to be a Hokie, it would be front page news over Obama’s visit today.

  21. Rick H. | July 13, 2012 at 6:40 pm

Bryan, yeah, Tech fans would be all jacked up about having somebody to backup the best QB in the conference, one of the best in the country. That’d be front page news, for sure.

  22. HalfEmpty | July 13, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Couldn’t break the lineup at UA so comes to UVA with his tail between his legs then gets cleared to play on some trumped-up family medical issue that no one from the University of Seersucker will talk about. London doesn’t want to talk about it – why should this be front page news?

  23. Ron | July 13, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Right Bryan. All the Hokies can talk about is UVA. Never mind they never beat anyone important out of conference.

  24. proof reader | July 14, 2012 at 12:09 am

It’s a new year for both teams with new players on both sides of the ball for both. Tech fans have to learn to quit living in the past and move on. Anything can happen this year as all of you know. Tech proved that when they lost to lowly JMU (oops I am living in the past guys ..sorry)…. It will be a new level playing field this fall for both teams….

  25. Bryan | July 14, 2012 at 9:44 am

we will see how LT does with a whole to corps of WRs, RBs and a new OL. Kudos to him if he repeats his success from last year, but it won’t be a walk in the park. Especially against the likes of Austin Peay and Bowling Green.

  26. giles | July 14, 2012 at 10:56 am

as a hokie i gotta say rocco stinks as an offensive threat. he is grant noel. no worse. if you dont think sims will take over during this season- then you are lookng at a dead uva offense. that being said- when mr. simms comes marching into blacksburg in nov. they will crack him like a chesapeake crab. home games against uva go like that. except that aaron brooks nightmare game. dont forget- rocco could not make the intramural team at bama-so simms has got to be a player to watch in 2012. after a few bad games by rocco, and they will come, you will hear the chants of the fans.

  27. Ron | July 14, 2012 at 9:09 pm

When are the Chokies going to beat a REAL football team?

  28. Trevor | July 15, 2012 at 4:27 pm

Ron, the question is – when are the Wa-wa Hoos going to be a REAL football team? Hmm?

  29. Jeff H | July 15, 2012 at 9:53 pm

Sims sounds like Ronald Curry. All this hype about his ranking coming out of HS but does little on field. i guess we’ll see. If you he can’t beat out sorry Rocco, then it’s pathetic. Funny that he left big boy Football in SEC for sorry ACC.

  30. hokie24 | July 16, 2012 at 12:46 pm

“If Phillip Sims was a Chokie he would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.”

No, he’d be Logan Thomas’ backup.

“When are the Chokies going to beat a REAL football team?”

When they can quit wasting time on cupcakes like UVA. UVA fans do realize that while they [try to] bash on VT’s schedule, that they are usually one of, if not THE, softest cupcake on VT’s schedule every year, right?
