SOLO/ASSIST/SACKS
Richmond, Roane 5-7-0, R. Barnette 3-9-0, McMillian 5-5-0, Wright 5-4-0, Howell 1-7-0, Pettus 3-4-0, Blueford 3-3-0, Grant 2-3-0, Wynn 2-2-0, Scott 1-3-0, Holmes 2-1-0, Gonet 1-2-0, Hamilton 0-3-0, Green 1-1-0, Williamson 0-2-0, Kelly 0-2-0, Ogunniyi 1-0-0, Sparks 1-0-0, Fullum 0-1-0, Landess 0-1-0.
Virginia, Hoskey 5-1-0, Harris 4-2-0, Coley 2-4-0, Nicholson 3-2-0, Harold 1-4-0, Greer 1-3-0, Walker 0-4—0, Romero 0-4-0, Canady 2-1-0, Renfrow 1-2-0, Reynolds 0-3-0, Schautz 0-3-0, Lee 1-1-0, Brim 1-1-0, Walcott 0-2-0, Moore 0-1-0, Hill 0-1-0, Snyder 0-1-0, Dean 0-1-0, Brathwaite 0-1-0, Urban 0-0-0.

THIRD QUARTER
The Cavs and Spiders traded touchdowns as UVa continues to keep Richmond at arm’s length. Pretty impressive drive by the Spiders, using the short passing game to drive 75 yards in 3:18. That came after a two-yard touchdown run by UVa’s Kevin Parks that was set up by a 44-yard reception down the left sideline by Tim Smith.

UVa up 29-12 after three and driving for more. Attendance is 50,081 — about 11,000 shy of capacity.

SECOND QUARTER
After a couple of drives that netted field goals, the Cavs lost their rhythm on offense and started leaving wide-open spaces over the middle for Richmond to rack up big gains. Three completions of at least 20 yards put the Spiders in the red zone, and they cashed in with a 3-yard catch by Ben Edwards from QB Michael Strauss, who transferred from UVa to Richmond this past winter.

The highlight play of the half came from UVa sophomore tight end Jake McGee, whose first career catch was a one-hander down the right sideline that netted 17 yards.

So it’s 22-6 Hoos at the break. Closer than UVa wants it to be after a dominant first quarter, but danger does not seem imminent. Cavs have outgained the Spiders 293 yards to 104, with Rocco throwing for 201 of those.

FIRST QUARTER
Well, the Cavs look they should be able to name the score today. They’re up 16-0, moving the ball at will and watching Richmond have trouble executing simple things like snaps.

Most impressive to me so far has been sophomore receiver Darius Jennings, who caught a 17-yard pass on UVa’s first touchdown drive and scored on a 51-yard reception on the next drive. Made some nifty moves along the sideline on that one.

Greetings from Charlottesville, where UVa is set to host Richmond in the season opener at 3 p.m. The plan today is to give a few thoughts on the Cavs, quarter by quarter. Feel free to chime in if you want to share any yourself.

Muggy, overcast day here, but no significant rain yet.

Go Richmond! I mean, go Virginia. I mean…

Let’s see if detective London has the clues to best the Spiders today.

aaron – can you get a feel whether the cavs are better than last year by watching this game. im worried about the nov tech game. or should i worry at all? ha have a great time.

Tough to say, giles. Certainly a crisp start to the game, exactly what you want to see if you’re a UVa fan, but Richmond didn’t offer a whole lot of resistance early. I think in games like this you look for individual signs of growth, such as the plays made by Jennings and McGee.

When are we going to see P. Sims’ rocket arm?

  6. shaun | September 1, 2012 at 5:52 pm

About what I expected from UVA today. The young guys on defense need reps and need to find a pass rush. The offense looks better overall. I think the kicking game looks better too. Look for Sims to play in the fourth. Should not get overly excited one way or the other since this is Richmond. Next week will be a better test although Penn State did not look very good today.

Sims seems just as good as advertised. He does have a big time arm. You look at him in the huddle and he just look like a leader. I know it is one quarter of one game but I would equate this to the sound of a ball coming off a bat from an elite MLB player. You hear that sound and you know a guy is special. Watching Sims is like that too. Something about the guy for sure. I can see UVA having a really dynamic offense once Sims takes over. Rocco seemed improved for sure but there is no way you can keep a talent like Sims on the bench.

The RT homepages says “BREAKING NEWS, UVA ROLLS Richmond”. Since when is beating an FCS team breaking news? Breaking news was when JMU upset VT or W&M upset UVA. Slow day at the office I suppose.

As long as Rocco is the starter, the talent will not be on the field. He can’t throw more than 15-25 yards in the air with any expectation of success. He doesn’t possess a 4-star arm; he’s a serviceable backup. Only at UVA is he the main guy. The term “offensive system” is the same old crap as before. Ask yourselves: would Shawn Moore be playing ahead of him or on the bench? Answer is in the question. And that sucks.

Well, let’s take a look at today’s ACC action, quite interesting. UNC, FSU, Duke, UVA all had blowout games and Miami scores over 40 in their win. Based on these performances, VT might be looking at a 1 and 11 season record instead of 11 and 1. What do you think?

  11. Barry | September 1, 2012 at 10:32 pm

Clemson wins, very impressive, gritty game. Clemson probably the only ACC team that can beat an SEC team.

  12. Barry | September 1, 2012 at 11:54 pm

VT’s biggest challenge for Monday night will be to avoid embarrassment on National TV’s big stage. They might becoming a bit nervous about the game as they have listened to and we have been bombarded with all of the articles of how great they are and how they will be a fringe player in the National Championship scenario. I would be nervous if the Ramblin Wreck were coming to town. Can’t wait, can you???????

  13. Trevor | September 2, 2012 at 8:23 am

The game between Clemson and Auburn was an entertaining game. They went at it from start to finish.

Alabama didn’t just bring the wood to Michigan. They beat the crap and snot out of Michigan.

The Big 10 didn’t do very well this weekend, with the exception of maybe Ohio State kicking the tar out of Miami (Ohio) team, and the majority of their teams won a squeaker. The biggest shocker (not) was Penn State losing to Ohio.

I tried to find the Virginia/Richmond games but it seem nobody cared enough to stream it, so I decided to do other things.

I can’t wait to watch Virginia Tech take on the Bumble Bees tomorrow night. It’s going to be enteraining, win or lose!

did i really see uva get a penalty for having 2 players wearing the same number (42, perhaps) on the field at the same time? if i really did see that, how in the world does THAT happen?

  15. proof reader | September 2, 2012 at 11:38 am

Theo 85, Rocco’s arm strength this year is much better than last. His ability to throw the 25 yard er along with farther down field is much greater along with his improved accuracy. With both him and Sims competing each day in practice , things can only get better.

  16. 89Hoo | September 2, 2012 at 2:46 pm

I don’t understand the hating on Rocco…I’m not sure what more you would have wanted from Rocco against Richmond. Yes, we’ll see how he does when the competition gets stiffer, but give him his due. To automatically anoint Sims is to say you know more about a guy who has never played significant minutes than the coaches, who have been watching, evaluating and comparing all summer. Don’t assume Rocco’s destined for the bench. Obviously the coaches – who are paid to make such judgements, unlike the folks on this blog site – saw enough to make Rocco the starter.

The Hokies are going to get smooshed tomorrow night, I can’t wait.

the verbage could be “squashed” … barry!

  20. Barry | September 2, 2012 at 8:32 pm

VT got no offense nor ingenuity and they got no defense to stop the option. The Jackets will be celebrating!!!!!!

Barry, that ab cruncher’s getting to you dude.
