Wednesday: Hokies, Cavs and (new!) Hardee’s Nutrition Minute

HOKIES
-So why was Tech so bad offensively against a mediocre Clemson defense last year? It wasn’t because Clemson was stealing signals. “Now, did we have a few little tendencies here or there? Yes. Everybody does,” Mike O’Cain says. “But he had no signals. They did a good job. They had a good plan against us. And you give them credit. And then we didn’t execute real well what we did.” Andy explores in that post what did go wrong and has some good notes on J.C. Coleman and the rest of the offense.

-Tech extends its series with East Carolina through 2020.

-Here’s more on the challenge of stopping the Clemson offense.

-Clemson is rested and ready following the bye week, eager to avoid a second half letdown like it had last year. “The second half of the season is very important to this program,” quarterback Tajh Boyd says. “We’ve got to punch it into full gear now.”

-The Vegas line, which opened at Clemson by 11, is down to 8.5.

CAVS
-Freshman defensive end Eli Harold has shown “superstar potential” in the trenches.

-The Cavs are a 3.5-point home favorite over Wake Forest.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
-Probably a good idea to make your Fearless Forecasters picks today if you’re into that sort of thing. Slate is here.

-Nick Saban forces one of his defensive lineman to write an apology to Missouri for this tackle in the waning minutes of a blowout.

COLLEGE HOOPS
-ACC media day will be televised at 1 p.m. on ESPNU and ESPN3.com. At 6 p.m., ESPNU will have something called “ACC coaches roundtables.” At 9 p.m., ESPNU will look at ACC, Big East and Big 12 media days.

BASEBALL POSTSEASON
-Justin Verlander does what Justin Verlander does, taking a shutout into the ninth inning in Detroit’s 2-1 victory over the Yankees. New York faces elimination at 8 p.m. on TBS. The pinstripers will have CC Sabathia on the mound against Max Scherzer.

-I would have played Alex Rodriguez last night, but Joe Girardi sat him. Just think A-Rod’s in a better mental place on the road.

-Giants and Cardinals get back at it at 4 p.m. today on WFXR, with the series tied at a game apiece. Matt Cain against Kyle Lohse.

HARDEE’S NUTRITION MINUTE
-The 1/3-pound Memphis BBQ Thickburger. Question for you: Are the calories over or under 1,000 on this puppy?

SOCCER
-The U.S. beats Guatemala 3-1 to advance to the final round of World Cup qualifying.

NAME THAT TUNE

Well I heard that you’re leavin’ (leavin’)
Gonna leave me far behind (so far behind)
‘Cause you found a brand new lover
You decided that I’m not your kind (aahh..)
So I pulled (I pulled) your name out (name out) of my Rolodex (oohh..)
And I tore all your pictures in two
And I burned down the malt shop where we used to go
Just because it reminds me of you (dippity dippity doo)
That’s right (that’s right) you ain’t gonna see me cryin’
I’m glad (I’m glad) that you found somebody new
‘Cause I’d rather spend eternity eating shards of broken glass…

On the Hardees burger I’d guess over 1000 calories. I thought it was mandatory that ALL Hardees burgers are over 1000 calories.

  2. lunchpailD | October 17, 2012 at 8:45 am

Sounds like a Weird Al song?

  3. Aaron McFarling | October 17, 2012 at 8:48 am

It is in fact a Weird Al Song. Nicely done. Anybody got the title (hint: it’s in the next line)?

BTW I shall reveal the over-under answer at noon if others want to jump in on that.

  4. crooked road | October 17, 2012 at 8:49 am

I think time of possession will be a key stat in the Clemson game. With their fast paced offense, that will put a lot of pressure on our D to not get gassed.

  5. crooked road | October 17, 2012 at 9:04 am

You have to wonder if something else besides ARod’s poor batting has created a rift between him & Girardi.

In that same vein, anyone want to comment on ARod trying to pick up women from the stands during that recent game?

  6. Other John | October 17, 2012 at 9:04 am

Even when Verlander isn’t at his best, he throws a 3-hit, 1-run effort through 8.1 innings. Not too bad, of course it helps that the Yankees are absolutely lifeless. But, man, did they try to make it interesting against Phil Coke. Tigers starters have now yielded 6 total earned runs in 8 postseason games. Remarkable. Now the thing I get concerned about is what happened in 2006. They swept Oakland on their way into the World Series, where they then fell flat losing 4-1 to the Cardinals. The Tigers had a long layoff between the ALCS and WS, while the Cardinals went 7 against the Mets in the NLDS and looked sharper in the WS.

And have to agree with cr, I think all Hardee’s thickburgers have to be over 1000 calories. If they aren’t, they slather them in mayo, cheese, and bacon to make it. But, it’s only the 1/3 pound burger, so I’m going to say it sneaks in just barely under 1000 calories, to qualify as one of the “healthier” options on their menu.

  7. Donald | October 17, 2012 at 9:14 am

    Under.

  8. justafan | October 17, 2012 at 9:40 am

My guess is over, I’m thinking it’s at least 1500 calories.

Go Tigers. A-Rod’s a prima donna, not a team guy like Jeter. He admitedly hasn’t gotten over Joe Torre pinch hitting for him years ago. Granted, he’s not the only one of the Yanks not hitting. But, he is the only who was once considered the best player in MLB. I think the lack of steriods may be his biggest problem. I wonder how much of that $130mil left on his contract the Yanks will end up eating. I can’t feel sorry for a guy who’s got that much money coming to him for doing so little. I heard Buster Olney say this morning that if A-Rod were a free agent today, based on his current production, he might get a one year deal at around 5 million. .270 hitter, 15-20 homers and now injuries are piling up.

  9. Other John | October 17, 2012 at 9:49 am

cr, A-Rod can strike out from the bench as often as he does at the plate.

  10. Trevor | October 17, 2012 at 9:50 am

I find it interesting that Saban “encouraged” the Tide player to write an apology. I feel that if the apology was sincere, it would have been done without a prodding from Saban, but who am I to question Saban?

  11. Travis Williams | October 17, 2012 at 9:54 am

Have to admit I’m lost when it comes to Hardees calorie judgements using still photos. I need video so I can properly assess the flopage.

With that said, onion straws are one of the most underrated burger/green beans/anything else toppings ever.

  12. Original Greg | October 17, 2012 at 9:56 am

That burger has to be over.

Speaking of college football. Yesterday, ODU announced they are playing at Maryland and at UNC next year. As mentioned in the RT a few weeks ago, the ACC changing from 9 league games back to 8 left a lot of ACC schools without games. I expected ODU to play some ACC schools. Should be good for them and who knows maybe it could lead to them trying to get in the ACC in the future. Wouldn’t that make recruiting the 757 interesting?

Verlander looked in 2011 form last night. He was downright dominant. With Justin being a Goochland kid, we get extra Tigers coverage in Richmond. I agree with OJ. A long layoff could hurt.

As of right now, I’d take Wake and the points. CR makes a good point about time of possession in the VT-Clemson game. If VT can get sustained drives, eat the clock and score some points, then the D stays rested. If it’s 3 and out for the first few possessions, then look for Clemson to put the score out of reach early. Despite how the D looked against Duke in the 2nd half, I’m still concerned that VT will be able to stop Clemson’s big play capability.

Despite the 1/3 pound burger, there’s prok BBQ and fried onion rings, which drive the calorie count well over 1000. I can feel my colesterol going up just looking at the picture.

  14. crooked road | October 17, 2012 at 10:21 am

OJ brings up a good point on the Hardees equation. I only noticed the 1/3 lb designation after I’d posted. I’m sure it’s close one way or the other, that’s what makes the over/under a toughie. It also made me wonder, in a cynical way, about how the sandwiches are prepped for their nutritional testing. If they go ‘just a little’ thin on the application of the condiments, and if they cook the burgers ‘just a little’ longer than usual, cooking out some of the grease, etc.

I almost never eat at Hardees, so I can’t say about them. I can say that if you order a Whopper from BK, expect about a cup of mayo. Maybe it’s the location I frequent, but they are more than ‘generous’ on that.

  15. crooked road | October 17, 2012 at 10:22 am

Lindsey Nair might not like AMc wading into her territory, didn’t think of that…

  16. RP | October 17, 2012 at 10:31 am

All I know is, the Memphis BBQ Thickburger is packed full of deliciousness. Definitely a once-a-month treat for me.

  17. HokieGal | October 17, 2012 at 10:34 am

That’s One More Minute by Weird Al. And that burger is waaaaaay over 1000 calories. Probably more like 2000.

  18. crooked road | October 17, 2012 at 10:35 am

It will be interesting to see if the Yankees hold ARod for the remainder of his contract. At his current rate, he will pass Babe Ruth’s HR total in 3-4 years. Considering that he’s always been viewed as an outsider by the organization, media & fan base, my guess is that the Steinbrenners will not be really thrilled about having him do that in pinstripes. I’d say they trade him away & eat the overwhelming portion of his contract in about two years from now. He’ll be somewhere between Willie Mays & Babe Ruth on the HR list, and nobody in NY will miss him.

  19. ken86 | October 17, 2012 at 10:44 am

Are those kevlar feathers on that Hokie Bird?

  20. Aaron McFarling | October 17, 2012 at 10:55 am

I knew the Hardee’s Nutrition Minute would get Travis back in here.

HokieGal completes the song namage. Well done.

  21. Original Greg | October 17, 2012 at 12:01 pm

Travis, I’ve seen a bunch of Hardie’s commercials but I’ve yet to see food in any of them. People tell me there is food in them but I’m more interested in the background.

  22. Rick H. | October 17, 2012 at 12:40 pm

I’m going out on a limb and calling the calorie count a push. :-0

I missed the recent discussion of Ray Lewis being a murderer. A while back I read Feinstein’s book “Next Man Up” about the Ravens. Most of it centered on Billick and general manager Newsome, but there was discussion of Lewis and the charges against him. Best I can recall Feinstein talked with the prosecutor in the case against Lewis and the prosecutor was quite specific about there being a lack of solid evidence against him. In fact there was no hard evidence that he was involved with the assault. He was there and tried to cover it up by not cooperating. Prosecutors in general are very adamant and dogged in their prosecution of murderers and I doubt very much they would have left this case be bargained down to Obstruction of Justice if they had the goods on him, which they obviously did not. I’m not a Ravens fan and really not a Lewis fan though I appreciate his passion and talent.

BTW, that was a very good book and I highly recommend it to pro football fans, though it’s a bit dated now, being 7 years old.

So frustrated with UVA I can barely stand to watch. The only football I am into at the minute is Anybody ranked 10th or better, high school football, and my son’s little league football team. The older I get the less time I want to waste with any sport or team that does not play with excellence. Maybe that sounds bad I don’t know but I am dropping NASCAR for the same reasons.

  25. Aaron McFarling | October 17, 2012 at 1:54 pm

The Burger is…drumroll please…UNDER 1,000 calories. 960. Congrats to all our winners today.

  26. scott whitaker | October 17, 2012 at 2:35 pm

#25 Ahh, but the grams of fat?

  27. David in Salem | October 17, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Than spend one more minute with you

There are videos available of Ray Lewis discussing the ‘life lessons’ he learned from the criminal encounter. He makes it pretty obvious that his bad decisions that night were in the selection of who he ran with, and not what he actually did himself. He also makes it obvious he learned much from that night and the ensuing events.

Ray Lewis certainly isn’t without fault, but if you look at his life in total, and not just one evening, he presents much to admire. I give him the benefit of the doubt, with no hesitation.

Haha! I was going to use that part, David, but really like the “burned down the malt shop where we used to go” line.

I call for a recount. 1,000 is what this baby says –

    http://www.burgerbusiness.com/?p=11699

I found another one, but it won’t link well. Actual Hardee’s website, but it is screwy, must be the cheese clogging things up.

  31. Barry from Ivy | October 17, 2012 at 7:55 pm

The Tigers are poised to capture the AL crown but they must remember 8 years ago when NY was in the same position and lost 4 straight to the Red Sox. This business is a one-game-at-a-time adventure and don’t be surprised if the Yankees make a series out of it yet. Even more surreal will be A-Rod back in the lineup and hitting a game-winning homer run in Yankee Stadium. Much stranger things have happened.

  32. Ron | October 17, 2012 at 9:22 pm

Oh the envy! And, Lewis is a criminal.

Rick–After review, the ruling on the field is CONFIRMED. You are looking at the Memphis BBQ SIX DOLLAR Thickburger, while the subject was the 1/3-pound Memphis BBQ Thickburger.

    Rick is charged a timeout…

  34. RP | October 18, 2012 at 8:54 am

As a follow-up, I checked the Hardees website this morning for the calorie count. The 1/3 pound Memphis BBQ Thickburger has 960 calories, 52 grams of fat, and onion straws (which count as a vegetable in my book, so it’s all good).

I agree with Scott Whitaker that Feinstein’s book “Next Man Up” is an excellent read.

  35. Rick H. | October 18, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Nicely played Mr. McFarling. The next round of artery clogging burgers is on me!
