Tuesday: Marcus on Michael; football battleground states

OH, BROTHER: If you were wondering what Marcus Vick thought about his brother’s situation in Philadelphia, wonder no more! Marcus went on a classic Twitter rant last night pleading for his brother to be traded, among other things. The Saints won that game 28-13.

LIKE OLD TIMES: Frank Beamer says this Florida State team reminds him a lot of the old good ones. Andy has more on that and some other notes from Beamer’s teleconference yesterday.

WEARING IT WELL: UVa has found a winning uniform combination for the road: white jerseys, white pants and blue helmets. They went 4-0 in that combination last year and wore it Saturday against N.C. State.

TOO CLOSE TO CALL: The Wall Street Journal put together a graphic exploring the “Football Battleground States.” In our state, they found that Virginia Tech was preferred by fans 29 percent to 24 percent over UVa. Among Democrats, the Hokies have a 33-20 lead. Republicans, it’s 30-28 Tech. People over 65, it’s 30-25 in favor of Virginia.

A FEW OTHER NOTES…: on that graphic. Interesting that in Florida, Miami is tied with Central Florida at 11 percent (the Gators are the leaders at 27 percent). Arizona has the tightest race, with Arizona and Arizona State each having 27 percent.

COME ON IN, EVERYONE: Perusing the VHSL pairings for Friday night, I counted 21 teams with losing records that are in the postseason. That’s not including all the .500 teams.

LIKE A HORROR FILM: Maryland loses its sixth player to a season-ending injury. This time it’s leading tackler Demetrius Hartsfield.

AND THE WINNERS ARE…: Minnesota’s JJ Barea and Cleveland’s Donald Sloan — the first two NBA players who have been warned of flopping. Fines start with the next offense. The flop tally might be pretty fun to follow.

BOBBY V: David Ortiz fires back at former manager Bobby Valentine, who implied that Big Papi had quit on the team. Says Ortiz: “This guy must have some mental issues or needs medicine or something.”

CABRERA HONORED:
The AL MVP race between Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout ought to be tight, but the players leaned toward the Tigers slugger, giving him the Players Choice Award as the AL’s Most Outstanding Player. Andrew McCutchen won it in the NL. David Price and R.A. Dickey were named the outstanding pitchers.

NAME THAT TUNE
Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don’t need to fight
To prove I’m right
I don’t need to be forgiven

Marcus Vick, the embarrassment that keeps on giving. Like Frank Beamer said – ‘NOBODY knows the Vicks like I do…’ and we were supposed to be assuaged by that.

  2. crooked road | November 6, 2012 at 8:38 am

You’ve got to love that Marcus still refers to himself both in the 3rd person & by his jersey number. I mean, I can understand @baberuth3 or even @mj23 but I have trouble putting Marcus in that next level, baby…

  3. crooked road | November 6, 2012 at 8:46 am

I forgot about the flopping rule since, well, it’s the NBA, so who cares, really? But Shane Battier might end up playing the entire season for free. So might the hometown boy…

  4. Other John | November 6, 2012 at 8:50 am

I think Marcus has a point though…the offensive line for the Eagles is bad. But that said, Vick is a turnover machine, like he pretty much always has been. His talent almost makes up for his mistakes, but not quite. He never has been, nor will he ever be, an elite quarterback at the pro level. I’d argue that he really wasn’t at that level in college either. He was athletic, and his athleticism allowed him to make some stunning moves to extend plays and make plays, but his ball-handling skills were always lacking, and that limits his value at the quarterback position.

  5. crooked road | November 6, 2012 at 9:16 am

Michael Vick was an elite college player, one of the ‘once in a generation’ types. I don’t know the Philly offense, as the NFL bores me, but if he were in an offense like the Redskins are doing for RG3 or Carolina for Cam Newton, he might thrive.

  6. Bob H | November 6, 2012 at 9:28 am

Philly needs to invest in some protection before MV1 can have all of the blame levied on him.

Reid is done. He is more than burned toast. MV1 will either be going through another complete coaching change or will go the way of McNabb as perpetual backup.

As far as to be traded, how many teams will show that much interest? Here is a QB that has been rode hard and put up wet. He has never had the discipline to stay in the film room and learn the defenses. Now his natural talents are waning, and are not enough to carry the team.

Philly should make a trade for Tebow (don’t laugh, it is a better fit than you think, protecting a left handed QB has its nuances and they are both lefties) and if that doesn’t work out, it is time for a complete overhaul.

  7. Dotted James | November 6, 2012 at 10:28 am

Why is Marcus Vick even a story??

  8. Trevor | November 6, 2012 at 10:37 am

Vick still has a gun on his arm. He can really sling it. The problem is reading where the safeties are going to be as well as anticipating his receivers. Reid is done, that’s much is certain, but will Vick be done as well? That’s the question.

Why is anybody even listening to Marcus? He wasted his opportunites in Blacksburg. Trouble followed him the second he became a Hokies and took it for granted.

On a brighter note, UNC starts the season this Friday by taking on Garner-Webb. Can’t wait to see them play!

Here’s a couple of tidbits that’s sure to get crooked road wounded up. According to Mike Gentry, on Tech Talk Live, which I “listened to” via a Twitter feed, the reason for the players’ injuries and losing the edge has a lot to do with the NCAA’s workout rules. His words, not mine. Also, Bill Roth, the Voice of the Hokies and protector of Beamer’s feelings, said he would not be reading any angry questions.

  9. Other John | November 6, 2012 at 10:42 am

To be honest, I’m not sure there’s a bigger waste of airtime than Tech Talk Live, since they changed the format a couple years ago and made it basically 2 hours of Hokie cheerleading.

  10. Aaron McFarling | November 6, 2012 at 10:42 am

Sounds like an interesting episode of TTL, Trevor. You know if there’s any place to listen to an archived version of the show?

  11. shaun | November 6, 2012 at 10:46 am

Complaining about workout rules is weak. The guys that really want it work out all the time on their own anyway. As for the game this week since it will be cold this week it might help Tech somewhat. Cold and windy would be better. Can somebody throw out some FSU cold weather stats? That would be interesting to know.

  12. Nokieman | November 6, 2012 at 10:48 am

    Baba O’Riley, The Who

Marcus needs a gig on pregame show…just as insightful as Terry/Howie

  13. crooked road | November 6, 2012 at 11:07 am

Interesting that Mike Gentry has come up with a Beameresque excuse for the Hokie’s dismal performance. Do these ‘new’ NCAA rules not apply to any other teams except VaTech? That’s just another example of BS concocted excuse fabricated by Beamer & his staff to avoid self examination. Perhaps if Mike Gentry tried bringing his approach to strength & conditioning beyond the 1990′s, we wouldn’t have so many guys getting gassed so quickly during games, and we could develop an offensive line that could actually push Austin Peay’s D-linemen off the ball.

As for Bill Roth, well, let’s remember his purpose in life – promoting VT sports. I’m sure that Frank had a chat with him well before air time to let him know what Frank would & wouldn’t tolerate.

  14. Bob H | November 6, 2012 at 11:08 am

If you want to get absolutely hilarious, I got a VT order form Saturday to order tickets for the ACC championship game and bowls like the Orange Bowl.

Obviously Beamer isn’t the only one delusional.

I have not listened to TTL ever since they changed the format to screened questions and took no more impromptu calls from fans. TTL lacks any depth or substance.

  15. Trevor | November 6, 2012 at 11:35 am

Aaron, good question. I was only able to “listen” by following a Hokies fan involved in broadcasting, I think, and he was live tweeting the answers only. The guests were, Weaver, Mike Gentry, Billy Hite, Bonner, Malleck, coach Johnson, and finally Beamer himself. Out of all those, I found Mike Gentry to be more of a relevation.

He said that with the new NCAA’s workout rules, they have had to back off a bit on conditioning and strength trainings, and he even said that the players weren’t as tough as they used to be, which was really, really a big time relevation.

Billy Hite really didn’t sway my suspicion about why he’s on the sideline. He basically say, “I can hear what’s going on, but I don’t have a mic, and they don’t hear what I’m saying.” I’m more interested in why the NCAA hasn’t inquired about that. ESPN camera caught Billy Hite and Beamer having a chat on the sideline, so I’m wondering what’s up with that.

About Bill Roth – a few questions in the interview with Weaver, Roth finally said that he was going to stop reading angry questions. All I can say was, “Whatever.”

I bet the Name that Tune song is more commonly referred to as “Teenage Wasteland,” but for some reason The Who titled it “Baba O’Riley” instead!

  17. Jp | November 6, 2012 at 12:28 pm

    Baba O’Riley by The Who.

  18. Bob H | November 6, 2012 at 12:45 pm

Come on AMF! NINE, count’em NINE D2 football games in the FF this week?

Utterly ridiculous and I am not kidding.

  19. crooked road | November 6, 2012 at 2:00 pm

More news on the Marcus tweet story. Check out the look on Michael’s face when confronted with the news…

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000091088/article/michael-vicks-brother-vents-about-philadelphia-eagles

One thing is certain, Marcus has not done anything in over a decade to help his brother’s name. Michael at least is trying, Marcus keeps playin’ gangsta style…

  20. Donald | November 6, 2012 at 2:19 pm

    Bob H.

    1. The Hokies are still, mathematically, in the chase for the ACC title. The odds are just HEAVILY stacked against them after losing to Miami.

    2. There’s talk that Miami may impose another bowl ban on themselves in hopes the NCAA is extremely lenient. The ACC has told them that, if they do, they must declare it before the ACC Championship game – which would make them ineligible for the game. Under this scenario, Tech would “back in” to the game if they beat BC and UVA and Duke loses to one of Georgia Tech or Miami.

  21. Zman | November 6, 2012 at 2:38 pm

FSU is pretty darn good. Not National Champioship caliber this year but good all the same.

I think David Ortiz is right. Don’t know why the Red Sox hired that guy. Then they had the guts to say that they didn’t realize what he was like. Pretty funny.

And just what good is served by Bill Roth reading “angry questions”? If you are looking for a fight, stay on this blog.

AM – the sooner you stop bringing up Marcus Vick the sooner he goes away. I hope Mike gets traded, too. Watching last night I didn’t expect him to live through the game. That line is going to get him hurt again.

  22. RP | November 6, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Very cool article about football battleground states. Surprising to see USC ranked last among California schools, and NC State behind Duke…

  23. Trevor | November 6, 2012 at 4:45 pm

I follow Frank Beamer on Twitter. He’s a funny dude, I didn’t realize he could be so snarky.

On Logan’s fumbling at the goal line, “That fumbled snap on the goal line was a designed play. #Hokies.”

On Frank Beamer yelling at the officials, “I CAN RAGE MORE THAN YOU, AL!!! #Hokies”

On the clock management gaffe before halftime, “Clock management is hard. #Hokies.”

“Can’t be head coach and special teams coach both anymore, so I decided to do neither. #Beamerball #Hokies.”

On Al Groh’s firing, “Sorry, Al. Guess CPJ didn’t think you’d ever Groh on him. #GT.”

Responding to someone on Twitter, “4 trips in the red zone for the Hokies tonight, 6 points and 2 turnovers.” Who’s to blame?” Don’t look at me…

On Miami’s double pass play they perfectly executed, “Hey hey that middle school trickery ain’t allowed!!! #Hokies”

Responding to the KeyPlay’s tweet, “THIS STARTS WITH BEAMER. HIS OFFENSE, STAFF, INCOMPETENCE. ALSO, SPECIAL TEAMS.” Miami’s a good team, Joe. It’s THE U. #Hokies

By the way, it’s not really Frank Beamer, just someone made a paraody Twitter account. It’s good for a few laughs.

  24. crooked road | November 6, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Marcus Vick won’t go away until about five years after Michael’s money goes away, and perhaps not even then.

As for Bill Roth not reading ‘angry questions’, I suppose Hokie fans are just supposed to clcik their heels and skip down the yellow brick road. Nothing like eliminating any method of access to the coaching staff that isn’t warm & fuzzy. Nah, VaTech won’t have the same issues as F$U with Bobby Bowden & Penn State with JoePa. Not at all, LOL…

  25. 540Hokie | November 7, 2012 at 9:11 am

I seldom listen to Tech Talk Live. I stopped BECAUSE they were taking calls from people with stupid questions.

  26. 540Hokie | November 7, 2012 at 9:13 am

Bob H, You often complain about the FF. Why do you bother with it if you don’t like it? Most of the D1 games are easy to pick. I like the D2 and D3 games, they make it a challenge.

  27. crooked road | November 7, 2012 at 9:43 am

The most stupid ‘questions’ that used to be consistently weekly features on ‘Hokie Huddle’ aka TTL, were those where the callers would gush – ‘Hey, Coach Beamer, how are you? I just want to tell you that my aunt’s sister-in-law saw you in the parking lot at the grocery store the other day. I just want to tell you, it made her WEEK! We all love you Coach, and we’re so proud that you’re one of us…’

Whereupon Beamer would give his usual Kroger promo, and everyone would pretend the call hadn’t been carefully screened.

Of course, now, since Jason of Arlington (or wherever it was), tripped Roth up by asking Beamer a hard question, and Frank went gonzo over it, there are no more phone calls allowed. Heaven knows, we can’t have a coach making over $2.4 million a year being held accountable for 30 minutes a week.

F$U with Bobby Bowden & Penn State with JoePa had tons of fans that defended the shield, right up to the ugly end. Enjoy the ride, folks…

  28. 540Hokie | November 7, 2012 at 11:37 am

I agree those are stupid calls, but also the ones where the callers who just say stupid things. Goober from Short Pump says, “I’ve got some plays drawn up that work for the sandlot team I coach. Give me your fax number and I’ll send them to ya”. Most people just called in to hear themselves and tell their co-workers the next day that they were talking to FRANK about the game last night. The call-ins just got old in my opinion.

I’ve heard people complain about Greg Roberts not taking calls on his local show. I’m glad he doesn’t. I’ve found most people who call in to any radio show, sports, news or whatever, seldom have a clue what they are talking about.
