Rutgers-Virginia Tech in-game blog (updated with column)

Not sure if the soot-covered stands would make for a great “Wish You Were Here” postcard.

POSTGAME
Hokies win 13-10. Here’s my column:

ORLANDO, Fla. — The whole crowd was holding its breath. Some fans seemed to be gasping. The ball left Logan Thomas’ hand and spiraled 40 yards downfield, carrying the hopes and dreams of Russell Athletic Bowl glory with it.

The Rutgers defender set up for an interception attempt. Tech receiver Marcus Davis, pursuing with all his speed and desire, caught the ball cleanly — about 10 yards out of bounds.

Silence at the Citrus Bowl.

That one fourth quarter play encapsulated this game: Anticipation of something big happening, and then…well, the opposite. The Hokies won it 13-10 in overtime on a missed field goal, but only after the teams combined to set an event record for punts and almost shut down Twitter with a deluge of sardonic critiques not seen since “Beavis and Butt-Head” stopped watching music videos from their sofa.

So, the requisite praise first: Congrats to Tech on being the last team standing. Congrats to game MVP Antone Exum on making the game-changing interception that allowed the Hokies to tie it, completing the karma circle that began with his treating some lucky kids to a shopping spree at Best Buy just before Christmas.

Congrats to the Hokies’ defenders, who held Rutgers to 197 total yards. Congrats to A.J. Hughes, who averaged 42.5 yards on his 11 (eleven!) punts. Congrats to Derrick Hopkins, whose first down sack in overtime made the final field goal attempt just tough enough to be missed.

But with the praise must come an acknowledgement of truth: This was one of the ugliest bowl games ever played, punctuating the most unsightly Tech season in two decades.

We have to hope that the first three quarters were rock bottom for Tech’s offense. As in ever. Given all the speculation that sweeping changes will be made to the staff on that side of the ball, there’s a good chance that at least they’ll have some fresh leadership to try to ensure that’s the case.

Logan Thomas would be best served forgetting this game – and much of this season – ever happened. Say this for him: He battled. He never lost his poise, not Friday night or any other time, but the confidence must be rebuilt, presumably with some new voices in his ear. If it can be, he still has a chance to come out the other side of his college career as an NFL prospect with a healthy dose of perspective on handling adversity.

The running game, a disaster al¬l season, went out with a resounding thud. The Hokies averaged 4.5 inches on their 32 rushing attempts, further distancing themselves from a dearly held Blacksburg tradition of pounding the other team into submission.

And yet the Hokies won, beating a 9-3 team with a strong recent history of bowl success. That Rutgers defense was legit – hard-hitting, sure-tackling legit — but Bud Foster’s crew matched those guys hit for hit, stop for stop. Tech will end the year ranked in the top 25 in total defense and have most of their starters coming back on that side of the ball.

This game will be remembered for everything it wasn’t: entertaining, for one. A ratings bonanza, for another – or at least that feels like a safe assumption.

But the Hokies might remember it for what it should become: a transition from the old way of doing things on offense to a new era with more imaginative thinking, game-planning and executing.
And they didn’t even have to lose to get there.

When it ended, the Hokies danced around in the rain before going to the podium to accept their trophy. A grinning Exum was crowned the game MVP. And the sideline reporter wrapped it all up succinctly, congratulating “Virginia State” on its victory.

Yes, mistakes were made. On this night. In this season.

Now comes the offseason to correct as many as possible.

THIRD QUARTER Not a darn thing happened. Still 10-0 Rutgers.

SECOND QUARTER Things have gotten no better for the Hokies, who still trail 10-0 and have looked terrible offensively throughout. Here’s how Tech’s eight possessions in the first half ended: Fumble, punt, punt, punt, punt, punt, punt, interception.

Logan Thomas is 10-for-21 for 82 yards an interception. He’s been sacked twice.

The Hokies have 73 yards of total offense. As they were leaving the field, a few Tech players began jawing with Rutgers players before some assistants pulled them away. Keep an eye on further chippiness.

I can imagine this being the most animated halftime speech in Beamer’s tenure. Rutgers gets the ball first to start the second half.

FIRST QUARTER Disaster, fiasco, and other such superlatives apply to Tech’s effort so far, as the Scarlet Knights own a 10-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Hokies are averaging 21 inches per play and have not had a snap in Rutgers territory. Feels like the offensive staff has already checked out.

Greetings from the Citrus Bowl, where the fans are settling in for a rock ‘em sock ‘em Russell Athletic Bowl between Rutgers and Virginia Tech. A lot of buzz about the helmets the Hokies are wearing — fighting gobbler emblem. That’s where we are with this game.

Usual format: Thoughts on each of the first three quarters, followed by a wrap-up post after the print column is filed. Your thoughts and ruminations are welcome. Tune to ESPN and enjoy.

Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. Hokies are favored by 2.

    What’s the score?

Hokies better bring it….because Rutgers will. Go Hokies !

  3. Zman | December 28, 2012 at 10:07 am

I’m from NJ. I emphasize “FROM”. Let’s kick some ass.

  4. Bob H | December 28, 2012 at 10:24 am

    Zman,

At least you have the sense to be FROM there. :)

I think we will know 5 minutes into the game whether it will be VT’s night. If they start getting a bunch of chippy penalties and aren’t sharp, it will be over. You can’t give up zebra yardage in a game like this.

I think the final is 17-10 and hope VT has the 17.

  5. wayne goodman | December 28, 2012 at 10:41 am

Let’s just hope the Hokies don’t pull a Duke tonight. The last 1:40 of that game was a totasl fiasco.

  6. Beamer Best all-time | December 28, 2012 at 10:49 am

We are favored by 2……Rutgers played in a very, very weak Big East. We should be atleast a 10 point favorite. I’m so glad I took off today to witness a Va Tech spanking of Rutgers today. Thomas will have a huge game today with his legs as well as his arms. He will run for 115 yds and pass for 250. 2 tds rushing and 3 passing in this blowout. The score will be Tech 45-21. Hail Frank Beamer!

  7. Bob H | December 28, 2012 at 12:08 pm

VT has beaten but ONE team with a winning record all year.

VT, under Beamer is 8-11 in bowl games, including 3-6 in the last 9 games.

I hope VT wins but I don’t like the way the facts stack up.

  8. WestLake | December 28, 2012 at 12:28 pm

@ Beamer Best: That “very, very weak Big East Conference” hung two Ls on your beloved Hokies. Go Scarlet Knights!

  9. Joe Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 12:46 pm

The heck with the coaches (hopefully some of whom will be getting severance packages — unfortunately checks that will be better than what the average employee on campus makes in a year). For the sake of the seniors especially and the rest of the young men on the team, I hope they play their hearts out, overcome the poor play calling and bad decisions from the sideline and pull off a substantial win. GO HOKIES!

  10. DDD | December 28, 2012 at 12:56 pm

the line just moved 3 points. From VT-2 to VT +1. That’s a big gameday move. Any news?

  11. don | December 28, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Very, very, very weak big east. Do you mean cupcakes that Tech likes to play?

  12. Rick H. | December 28, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Aaron, are you actually at the game? If so, have you gone to see Mickey and Minnie yet? Goofy is my personal favorite. Those long ears rock.

It sucks that Tech is playing at a decent locale, but nobody wants to waste good money on a less than good team, even if it is Disneyworld.

Few years back, after too many trips to Jacksonville, we actually did Orlando as the “bowl destination” to go for one of the Gator Bowl games – and just stopped to see the game on the way home.

Another year, in 2009, when Clemson-GT played for the ACC championship, we gambled on the “pre-season favorites” when the ACCCG was played in Tampa, and dropped an early $29.99 each on those super cheap Allegiant airline tickets – needless to say, we got to spend an extra day in the Magic Kingdom.

What was really weird, though, we were in line for Splash Mountain, at about kickoff, with a half dozen Clemson fans, who decided that the rides were going to be better than the game. They were correct in their decision. They later vacated the fun they had, and accepted a title, I’d assume.

  13. Rick H. | December 28, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Anybody else but me just sick for Duke? I, mean, let’s be real, that was the biggest choke job ever, in the history of college football.

You get in a bowl game once every couple of decades, with a shot to win one every half century, and you have THAT happen? It was just unreal.

  14. Lake Shore Johnny | December 28, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Weak Big East? I guess that’s why I went North, saw Tech get smashed by Pitt? In that “weak” Big East? Can’t wait until those “weak” Panthers join our league in basketball and come down here and lay down for us in that game, too.

What did we learn about showing no respect, or getting ready, for your opponent? Seems we learned nothing.

I guess we lose this one, too, then. Hope the team is better prepared.

  15. proof reader | December 28, 2012 at 5:38 pm

Well that’s a great way to start the game…Beamer sure has them all on the same page.

  16. Jared French of Greene county | December 28, 2012 at 5:51 pm

This is pathetic!! Month to get ready for this game and you start like that! Didn’t even challenge the play, was clearly just a safety! These coaches are a joke, and Beamer didn’t even show any anger!

  17. Mountie | December 28, 2012 at 5:56 pm

Hokies looking good early …. Hahahaha

  18. DougF | December 28, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Officials are tilted toward Rutgers so far. Logan Thomas’ knee was down in the end zone before the fumble and on a long pass to Fuller the receiver was run over by the Rutgers defender and no flag. Wasn’t there a review of the touchdown? Also, an official was in good position to see the interference by the Knights defender.

  19. jogger | December 28, 2012 at 6:11 pm

Thomas needs to be benched….he couldn’t hit a bull in the A#$ with a hand full of rice……

  20. proof reader | December 28, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Beamer’s Best Boy, I hope you had vacation time to use and didn’t have to take the day off with out pay. If you did it might of been a bit of a waste.

  21. 1971 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 6:19 pm

Virginia Tech is the most inept offensive team I have ever seen. It will be a long night for the defense and things could get ugly!!

  22. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 6:25 pm

Logan Thomas a one man offensive trying so hard to play hero! His sorry offensive line can’t protect his sorry ass! Keep on choking chokies so that the loyal chokie nation can come up with sorry excuses! Go chokies what a joke!!

  23. Brad | December 28, 2012 at 6:36 pm

    Early observations:
    1) Why in God’s name didn’t the coaching staff challenge the first play? It was a safety at worst.
    2) The offensive line is getting tossed around like a bunch of rag dolls.
    3) I hope Stiney and O’cain aren’t getting paid for this game.

  24. John | December 28, 2012 at 6:45 pm

I hope people are finally sick of this sh@##. I say they should fire Beamer and eveything on the offense. They only had a month to get this sharp. Wait a go offense. I bet beamer wants to fire a cheerleader or water boy.

  25. Tom L | December 28, 2012 at 6:47 pm

Typical Beamer bowl team. How in the hell can we have a month to prepare and look so disorganized. It’s embarassing.

  26. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Wasn’t it AMc who said you could be certain that a Frank Beamer team would come out focused? I know, AMc, you were trying to kiss up for posting the ‘shake up the offensive coaches’ blog. But seriously?

Looks like Frank remembered that his bowl bonus only was based on ‘making the bowl, not winning the bowl’. From the lack of hours of practice spent – something not reported by the RT football watching staff, it was pretty obvious that the focus was not HEAVY on winning the bowl game. Sure Frank wants to avoid a losing season, but the effort expended the first half displays the apathy by Beamer & staff for several years in achieving excellence, when they’re more than happy to get just as much money for settling for slightly above average.

After all, Bill Roth discovered the 20 year bowl streak nugget, and Frank can cling to that nearly as closely as he does his empty but very dusty MNC trophy case.

  27. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Yes Yes Yes what a beautiful pick by Logan Thomas! Where’s the chokie nation now? the loyal chokie nation can’t accept that their precious hokies are choking! All that hype for a team that can’t protect their QB and your sorry head coach beamer and that what the hell just happened look? I guess like the normal another choke job is on its way! The loyal chokie nation go choke on that!

  28. Steve78 | December 28, 2012 at 7:02 pm

I see nothing positive out of the offense. Put Leal in and get some experience. DougF officials are not tilted toward Rutgers, Hokie offense is playing with it’s head up its #$%

  29. Aaron McFarling | December 28, 2012 at 7:03 pm

CR–Turn on your sarcasm detector and read the column again. Also review this, from the bowl guide:

Russell Athletic Rutgers (+2.5) over Virginia Tech Orlando, Fla. Dec. 28 5:30 p.m. ESPN
The Hokies have covered the spread only three times this year (vs. Bowling Green, Florida State and Duke), and I don’t know why we should expect them to turn on the jets suddenly. Rutgers stinks offensively but has the nation’s fourth-ranked scoring defense. Also, the Scarlet Knights haven’t lost a bowl game since 2005.

  30. proof reader | December 28, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Thomas might want to think about going in the draft if all the scouts comments come back favorably. Would he really want to come back and play with this team next year.

  31. 1971 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:09 pm

I sure am happy we had time to prepare for this game. Lord only knows what we would look like if we were not prepared. Beamer is again showing his bewildered and lost look.

  32. Brad | December 28, 2012 at 7:09 pm

Aaron, you are missing a punt. You listed five. Tech punted six times.

  33. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:13 pm

Its beautiful when you can hear on the tv coverage on espn that the chokies can’t beat anybody from the big east! I see that beamer best of all time proclaiming that vt wins. Maybe if an act of god shows up and rutgers refuse to play! As for the loyal chokie nation enjoy it because this will be your reality with a sorry team and with a fan base that accepts all of this losing will be the normal and like the typical chokie fan their response to this will be “as long as we try we can beat anybody” hokie nation go choke on it and wake up from the hangover of years ago because your precious hokies will become the laughing stock of acc football for years to come only winning a few games and in between making excuses and having a coach like beamer saying “Uh, Uh, Uh, we tried” and making money by focusing on commericals instead of his job which is to coach! By the way fire the entire staff!!

  34. Aaron McFarling | December 28, 2012 at 7:13 pm

You’re right Brad. Thanks. I’ll fix it.

  35. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:13 pm

That Rutgers special teams will get after ya! They’re flyin’ around out there…

Here’s a note for the Beamer apologists who refuse to accept reality – especially you folks in Texas – Rutgers has blocked 31 kicks in the last 4 seasons. You remember blocked kicks? Yeah, you remember pretending that Frank Beamer wasn’t full of BS when you said that it was impossible to block kicks any more because of rules changes? You remember pretending that Frank didn’t give away his ONE secret to special teams success a decade ago and failed to ever care enough to study a another way to succeed? You want to admit that Frank is coasting now? Nah, you’ll keep weeping in the corner before you ever admit the truth.

Rutgers has blocked 31 kicks in the last four seasons. VaTech has blocked 5. Now, put aside your damp O&M panties and tell me who has given up on trying to evolve and succeed. You want to pretend like a little girl that ‘the rules’ prevent special teams aggression? You want to keep on apologizing for Frank’s lack of effort? Go right ahead, and embarrass yourself. The facts prove you wrong. Of course, you’ll pull out emotional arguments that ignore the truth, because you’re apologists for emotional attachment to local ineptitude.

Win or lose this game, the facts remain the same. Frank’s lack of drive has left the Hokie program stuck in 3rd gear. We might be able to hit 65 on the highway, but we’ll never be a match for those vehicles who speed past us in the serious lane.

The trophy case remains empty, and dustier by the day. He had it installed, not us. Blame him, if you’re man enough, not those who believed in him way back when.

  36. HokieinSC | December 28, 2012 at 7:16 pm

My view after a disastrous first half. Offensive players who have given up on the coaches and coaches who have given up on the offensive players. You can just see on the field a spirit of resignation, and attitude of same old same old. Will there be a coaching change? You can tell the offensive players have given up, so I say yes.

  37. HokieinSC | December 28, 2012 at 7:20 pm

And I agree with Crooked Road — Frank Beamer appears to be coasting. Bud Foster is not, but Frank and the offensive staff are. I said this before on blogs and will say it again, the ghost of Bobby Bowden is descending on Lane Stadium.

  38. Rick H. | December 28, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Word is, there are a couple of openings at Disneyworld. With a little luck, Newsome will put on the Dopey costume, and O’StineCain can share the Dumbo outfit.

I could get more yardage against this Rutgers team with one of my old electric football teams. Hell, there is enough vibration on the field from the guys not being blocked, that my start RB would find a hole, or two.

  39. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:23 pm

AMc, your comment from your column – ‘The one thing you’re guaranteed not to hear after this one is that the Hokies were anything less than focused.’

All I’m sayin’ is – Not sayin’, I’m just sayin’… The words are the words.

There’s lots of conversation to be made about the state of things in Blacksburg. Sure, some of them would get you cut off from hearing yet another recitation of – ‘(Fill in the blank) is a tough team, with a lot of talent. They’ll really get after ya, I tell ya. We’ve got to work hard and be ready for them.’ Following the game – ‘We were only 4-5 plays away from winning this game. A block here or there, and we’d have won. The coaching was fine, but we’ve got to play harder…’

Same ole, same ole. By bowing before the ring, you’re not really gaining anything, because the Pope isn’t giving you a quote to run with even once every four years. You know it, and we all know it. Yeah, you’ve got to appease his thin skin, but seriously, you don’t lose much by not doing so.

  40. Aaron McFarling | December 28, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Because he couldn’t say that, CR. Not after staying “on point” for a month to avoid the real topic.

  41. Exit 114 | December 28, 2012 at 7:27 pm

So, anyone heard from Mary from Ivy

  42. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:27 pm

Maybe a kick or two to the lunch box might be able to do the trick!!

  43. the other Tony | December 28, 2012 at 7:28 pm

Total embarrassment and Newsome is the main reason, the OL is pathetic.

  44. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:29 pm

Where’s Texas when you need ‘em? Must still be curled up in the corner, silently mouthing the words to ‘Moonlight & VPI’…

  45. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:34 pm

Sure, AMc, but at least don’t play the game when you’re back in the real world, outside of Merryman. Drop the pre-approved speak and give the analysis. That’s all I made a minor reference towards. We all know Frank gives zero content, EVER, E-V-E-R, but that doesn’t mean we all have to pretend to live inside his bubble of denial. Sure, many on here do, like Texas, the other denials & the area codes, but the rest of us don’t have to pretend we’re far down the rabbit hole. We can live in the real world, if only given substance.

  46. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Man I don’t see the regular’s who jump on me for my comments! Oh wait the beloved chokies are just choking again and the loyal choking nation can’t defend them this time because just maybe this time the hokies just suck! Now go choke on that loyal chokie nation!!!

  47. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:39 pm

HokieinSC, just wait until you see how Frank twists his upcoming ‘Huge & MAJOR’ offensive coaching changes. All so he gets some new guys to do his Jerry Claiborne Cro Magnon mentality offensive mindsets to continue to anchor the Hokies thourghout the rest of his coaching tenure.

Then, when he orchestrates Shane’s ascension to replace him, he’ll keep his thumbprint all over the program for the following eight seasons, so that we lag further & further into irrelevancy.

  48. HokieinSC | December 28, 2012 at 7:39 pm

CR, your comments are usually good. We are all frustrated with the inept offense. But what do you want AMc to do? Jump up scream and do a rain dance? Some things are obvious. It is obvious the VT offensive coaching staff has had a disastrous year. Frank Beamer has been pushed against the wall by the press. He was asked point blank three times in the last two weeks if he was going to dump Stiney and Co. Frank stonewalled. AMc screaming at Frank is not going to change anything.

  49. HokieinSC | December 28, 2012 at 7:41 pm

And yes, CR you are right, if Shane ascends, Lord help us all.

  50. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Potato Chip, the Yellow Rose has been a little vocal in the last couple of days, but he’s back curled into his fetal position in the corner, mouthing his mantra and the good ole times blather. Maybe the Hokies can finally score, and he’ll spring back into vigor. Who knows, a special teams block would probably equate to his swallowing 3-4 Viagra at once, it would be so magnificent.

  51. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 7:45 pm

I’m not asking for any screaming. I’ve never asked for any thing similar, in all of the decade-plus that it has been SUPREMELY OBVIOUS that Stinespring was incompetent. Sure, the apologists like to hide behind his ‘recruiting genius’ blather. All I’m asking for is acceptance of the truth.

I’ve only got about 2% argument with AMc, so little it is inconsequential. Of course, any dissent in Hokie Nattion seems to always be overmagnified into 200% atrocity, so I’m not surprised at the response.

  52. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Thanks CR I just figured they are on a mountain choking on it because their beloved chokies are choking on national tv as normal!!

  53. Aaron McFarling | December 28, 2012 at 7:50 pm

CR — I don’t get you’re constant “cut off” mantra. Cut off from what? Writing a book with Frank or something? I try to be fair, I try to be respectful, and I write what I think, both in the paper and on this blog. It’s not always going to match your opinion, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t my honest assessment of good and bad.

  54. Brad | December 28, 2012 at 7:50 pm

Hokie football used to be something you would look forward to all week. I feel robbed by this apathetic coaching staff and athletic department.

  55. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:51 pm

    Report card for the chokies

Why did we spend twenty years establishing the VT brand and then put the Gobbler on our helmets?

  58. Brad | December 28, 2012 at 7:58 pm

not that it matters, but tech is getting a real screw job from the officials tonight.

  59. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 8:07 pm

AMc, I don’t want a mirror of my opinion, despite what some of my (now hidden) detractors might claim. I also don’t understand the ‘cut off’ reference. I do think RT reporters are a little tempered in their treatment of FB, just as Alabammer reporters are in treating Saban. I’m just trying to get you to stretch your legs. if I didn’t think your weren’t capable, I wouldn’t mention it.

Look, gloves off? Berman seems overly harsh on Hokie basketball. Bitter is somewhere in between soft and harsh, though lately trending w the softer side, so I’m thinking he must have gotten cut off a few times, and is learning his lesson. I am satisfactory with your reporting, though I’ll bust you sometimes that I think you deserve it. This was one of those times. I appreciate that you allow dissenting opinion to the lemming-like mantra of most local blogsites. I’d be dead in the water otherwise. I realize and appreciate that. I also think realism is CRUCIAL in a huge way to honest discourse, and that you also realize that, so you allow my voice.

I’m just speaking my voice, even when it ruffles the big dog’s (your) feathers. To me, that’s keeping it honest.

  60. Huntersdad | December 28, 2012 at 8:07 pm

If Tech can’t move the ball and score on this drive to start the 4th quarter, it should be Leals turn.

  61. Aaron McFarling | December 28, 2012 at 8:09 pm

Fair enough, CR. No worries on my end. I appreciate the back-and-forth, too.

  62. Brad | December 28, 2012 at 8:13 pm

What genius calls a run on third & five when you’ve averaged 1.4 yards all game?

  63. Hokie Pokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Glad to see we can still set up a field goal in the red zone…this time by running to the edge with our slowest RB on 3rd down.

  64. Huntersdad | December 28, 2012 at 8:22 pm

All right Logan, you can stay in the game now. Leal, keep your seat ( for now) .

  65. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 8:30 pm

New phrase, good only for this game, since Stinespring is going to quickly be ‘promoted’ to Recruiting Coordinator at the same salary as he currently makes – approximately FOUR times what the national average for recruiting coordinators is. A field goal should now be called a Stinespring TD, since it’s a score in the red zone.

  66. Hokie Pokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:30 pm

i’ve grown to accept that our center cannot block his man but it would be nice if he could accurately and consistently snap the ball

  67. Hokie Pokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:35 pm

gary nova may be VT’s MVP

  68. BobH | December 28, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Get the ball 1st and 10 at the R 39 and go backwards?

What great play calling in that one….

  69. Georgia Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Let’s not limit this discussion to Stinespring whom is consistently the worst offensive coordinator in bowl games. What about Beamer? He has gone past his prime. How many times will Millen say that this is not the typical Frank Beamer coached team. Has the old coach lost connection with the players? I think yes. Has this bowl game been poorly managed? Absolutely. Terrible calls. Lots of mistakes and misses and penalties. Two or three delay of game calls. Bad snaps. Piss poor football. It is time … Beamer needs to go.

  70. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 8:51 pm

Good to see that Beamerball is still running at the same highly efficient level as the past decade. Desperation timeout called, while Frank tries to figure out what the heck is going on.

  71. Hokie Pokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:54 pm

42 yard career long FG but tries a 51 yarder in the rain

  72. BobH | December 28, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Why not field the punt? What happened to the fair catch?

Time for an LT interception or fumble.

  73. BobH | December 28, 2012 at 8:54 pm

    Correctly predicted-as it happened.

  74. Willis | December 28, 2012 at 8:55 pm

Seriously. If Rutgers was playing half way decent tonight they’d be up by two scores.

  75. BobH | December 28, 2012 at 9:04 pm

So now we go to overtime. So, Frank, do you kick it on 1st and 10 from the 25 knowing you are sure to go backwards with this offense?

  76. dobbs | December 28, 2012 at 9:10 pm

This is the worst display of offense by two teams in a bowl game I’ve witnessed since the first bowl I ever attended. That was the Cotton Bowl, end of the 1982 season. Supposed to have been an offensive showcase, but Eric Dickerson’s SMU slipped by Dan Marino’s Pitt 7-3.

  77. BobH | December 28, 2012 at 9:12 pm

LT tried to give it to Rutgers in OT. Let’s see if Journell can miss

  78. Willis | December 28, 2012 at 9:15 pm

And … VaTech wins by default. Congrats.

  79. Hokie Pokie | December 28, 2012 at 9:19 pm

congrats to the players – now let’s fire some offensive coaches

BTW, i hope we don’t hire Elliot from south carolina…doesn’t seem much better than what we have

  80. 1971 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 9:22 pm

One thing for sure……… It was ugly, but a win is a win. Congratulations to the players and especially the defense. Heck of a game on the defensive side.

  81. dobbs | December 28, 2012 at 9:23 pm

I see a similarity between the Rutgers and Hokies teams. Both have good defenses, not very good offenses. Rutgers had a better offensive game plan, but where LT played poorly, Nova is just terrible. A just slightly better QB at Rutgers, and they win by double digits.

  82. Rick H. | December 28, 2012 at 9:26 pm

Even if she’s ugly, if you score after the prom, you still should feel good. But, next year, you should get a better looking date.

  83. dobbs | December 28, 2012 at 9:28 pm

I’m just glad they didn’t choke on a Mr. Potato Chip.

  84. HokieinSC | December 28, 2012 at 9:34 pm

Yes it is a win. Defense has everything to be proud of. Offense does not. Even the announcers said it — VT defense is constantly stopping Rutgers and waits for something to happen on offense … and they wait … and they wait … and they wait … ooops … three and out. Get back on the field D.

  85. Smithfield Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Wow, that was not a performance to remember. But, the season did begin and end with a Win. Barry from Ivy, who did VT beat to open the season? I can’t seem to remember. In all honesty I’m not boasting about the season, it was fairly putrid. Our best performance was for 3 quarters against Duke. I don’t know what this offseason will hold for the coaches, but I hope it’s either some replacing or some brain transplants. Wow, I have never seen an offense sputter so much as this one did this season, well except for Rutgers tonight. Congrats to the Seniors leaving VT with a win. Hope we ink all of our recruits on signing day. Hope this season was a mere bump in the road. I guess we will know next year. P.S. I hope Alabama wins 50-0 and every eligible player declares for the draft :)

  86. Jeff H | December 28, 2012 at 9:38 pm

Win or not that has to be one of the worst performances ever by VT. Needless to say LT is coming back after a dreaful showing with one good throw(big deal). Also playing a Rutgers team w a decent D but the worst QB in the country. Good luck vs Bama in next years opener. That’s going to be ugly.

  87. Techerman | December 28, 2012 at 9:46 pm

    What you talking’ ’bout, Willis!!
Bad as VT’s O is, Rutgers is worse. Good as their D is, VT’s was better tonight. We dropped 3 interceptions, one a clear pick 6.
How did they win 9 games?

  88. Mike | December 28, 2012 at 9:49 pm

I wonder if this game is good enough to save stineys career this time? I’m glad we at least decided to settle on 4 running backs. don’t care who you are, you could be Barry Sanders how many times did he get the ball at a standstill? bad calls, bad running calls, bad running coaching, and terrible offense offline coaching. they all have to go.

  89. BobH | December 28, 2012 at 9:50 pm

    Where is Barry now?

  90. steve | December 28, 2012 at 9:58 pm

The game was nothing to be proud of but I still find it interesting that Mr potato head hadn’t commented since the end of the game. I guess he calls himself Mr potato chip because he aspires to one day have the intelligence of a potato chip.

  91. steve | December 28, 2012 at 10:04 pm

To 1971 Hokie comment #21: perhaps that should be that VT has the second most inept offense?

  92. VTRedwolf | December 28, 2012 at 10:05 pm

Why was Holmes returning punts instead of Jarrett? Was Frank trying to give him something to do?

If Frank doesn’t fire some coaches after that debacle he never will.

  93. Beamer Best all-time | December 28, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Hokies win is all that matters…..Thomas might not have lived up to the hype tonight but when the game was on the line he came thur. They won this one on heart and soul which is the trademark of a Beamer coached team. When the chips were down we said hey we got this. Thomas might go pro soon due to this being a weak QB draft. It would be a shame to see him go. Bring on Bama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  94. scott whitaker | December 28, 2012 at 10:28 pm

I’m happy we won the way we did with a game highlighting a totally inept O. I’m disappointed with the “fans” on this board who seemed to be pulling for them to lose. Let’s just chill a while with the sarcasm and predictions on what will happen now and wait to see what Frank’s going to do. I’m gonna sit back, grab a handful of potato chips, wait 12 hours and laugh when I flush that stuff down with the rest of the BS I just read…

  95. VTRedwolf | December 28, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Thomas was as bad a QB tonight as have ever seen. He was only overshadowed by how bad Rutgers QB was and that’s saying a lot. His passes were high, low, left and right, but he didn’t hesitate to throw his hands up and draw attention to a receivers bad route. The good news is he’s coming back and he can’t get any worse. The bad news is he’s coming back.

The offensive line will not get better next year if this is how they perform after a month to prepare. The running backs will not get any better. Holmes is too slow, Coleman too small, Scales is gone and Gregory is tiny. None of them can break a tackle except Scales. This running game will take years to repair if it can be repaired.

The receiver corps loses it’s best athlete albeit an underperformer in Davis. It loses it’s most reliable receiver in Corey Fuller. It loses it’s biggest disappointment in Roberts. It returns DJ Coles and some promising new talent who will be beyond green.

No the offense will not get significantly better.

Stinespring is fired. OCain is fired and Newsome is fired. If Frank doesn’t do it then Weaver needs to grow a pair and intervene. Pray that Bud Foster doesn’t leave in disgust and realizes time is short for Frank Beamer.

This level of ineptitude falls at the feet of Frank Beamer and his reluctance to do the things that EVERYBODY knows are required. His reputation has been much maligned but irretrievably so. The time is nigh…

If Stinespring has any respect for Frank Beamer he will tender his resignation. OCain’s responsibility was Logan Thomas progression and I don’t know that any QB has ever regressed this far in a year. 38.5% passing?!! OCain is gone. The offensive line was so far beyond bad that is doesn’t warrant discussion. They have underperformed for so long “mediocre performance” is a compliment. Newsome is gone. The running backs were terrible, but I’m willing to give Little Beamer more time, heck he was VT’s version of Rudy how can he expected to know how to coach any position.

No, Frank cannot ignore this one, we will not let him. The media won’t let him. The sports “journalist” won’t let him. Mark May, as snide a commentator as they come couldn’t even pile on they were so bad. They were embarrassed to be showing this game it was so bad. They drove the figurative knife so deep LT will not be mentioned as a potential anything next year, but rather a huge dissapointment that needs to show he deserves to be the starting QB. I can’t believe I’m saying this but Mark Leal could not possible have done worse. Trey Gresh might have given him a run for his money.

If it were not for the defense I would hold no hope for this team, but let’s remember this was Rutgers and regardless of what the announcers said they were terrible. So we barely beat a terrible team. Didn’t deserve to win either.

  96. Roger Weeks | December 28, 2012 at 10:35 pm

And, where is Mr. Potato Chip now, just when we are all just waiting to hear from him again?

  97. scott whitaker | December 28, 2012 at 10:42 pm

Talk about an inept O, man Rutgers clearly played the 4th quarter scared and was just trying to hang on for OT. VT’s D played well but their QB was just plain bad.

  98. David in Salem | December 28, 2012 at 10:50 pm

Not good enough to save Stiney, Newsome, O’ Cain, Sherman.

Defense won this game. Offense nearly gave it away at the start. It helps that the Rut(s)gers QB made Logan look like a Manning. If Rutgers had a QB as talented as say, Greg Boone, this would have been ugly. Well, uglier

  99. Mike | December 28, 2012 at 11:13 pm

You know this goes to show one thing. A Bud Foster coached defense is good for 6 wins even without an offense. Half the time i was praying for the offense to come in and take 3 knees and punt. O wait, my bad!!! Isn’t that what they did? For 3 quarters of the game. That was the worst game I have ever seen Tech play, ever!!!

Beamer Best – Wow!!! You must be into the white lighting from franklin county. Bring on Bamma!!!!! Bring on some water to cut the 4 quarts of 150 proof you must have been drinking to kill the pain of watching a Beamer coached team implode the first 3.5 quarters.

  100. Griggsy, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft | December 28, 2012 at 11:21 pm

I agree with Aaron’s summary: this was one of the ugliest football games ever played!!! I am 61, have been watching college football for a bit over 50 years, and I cannot think of one as bad as this, except maybe one that was played in Miami WAAYYYYYYYY back when they hosted the Pitt Panthers. The field was a mess in a tropical downpour immediately, and by the 2nd half it was completely ridiculous. Guys would be tackled and slide for about 5 or 6 yards. There was more water on the field than grass by the end.
Only one squad was consistently good throughout the game and especially in the 2nd half, and that was the VT defense. They only surrendered 3 points. BOTH qbacks were horrendous. Logan Thomas was considering entering the NFL draft??? Are you kidding us?? He was miserable. At one point he was 14 for 37, just about 40% completion rate. Sure, some of those were drops, but c,mon …. Even the officials were atrocious.

  101. Griggsy, SW ROA County, 1420 Ft | December 28, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Oh yeah, even the coaching decisions were at times bad, too. On going for FGs when they should have punted or tried for the 1st down.

  102. FamilySecurity | December 29, 2012 at 3:14 am

Tweedy should have gotten mvp. Upon Stiney’s reassignment and Ocain/Newsome’s retirement, who is coming in? AMac, I know you have the inside scoop and can’t share it. Just say greenlight if I’m close:
    The “Fridgester”

  103. crooked road | December 29, 2012 at 6:45 am

Now, the only real question is – Who does Frank select to replace his current offensive coaching staff? We all know that Shane is untouchable, because of his last name, and Frank’s plan to shoehorn him in as Frank’s replacement. Weall also know that Frank will N-E-V-E-R fire Stinespring. He’d fire Bud first. Stinespring is reassigned. Recruiting coordinator will be the appeasement. O’Cain will be gone, in form of ‘retirement’. Newsome & Sherman will also be gone, probably with less kind treatment.

For the criticis – You can research AB’s blog and see I said this as far back as November 19th on his block, specifically numbering the changes. Maybe sooner, but certainly that far back. Nov 20th, 25th, 28th, 30th, December 4th on AB’s blog. I even gave my guess as to what Frank’s main choice – Offensive Coordinator – would be. As to where he actually goes and whom he actually chooses, we’ll find out within three weeks. it would be nice if he was quicker, but then, Frank has never been about the fan base, he’s been about the perception. We won’t know until after next Wednesday.

So that’s the whole focus – what will Frank do, and will he finally allow his new hires to perform to their capabilities? Or will he keep the clamps on them, thus rendering them mere puppets to his own inability to evolve?

7-6 season, massive discontent in the fan base, loss of relevance on the national scale, the continued erosion of the program. Will he still remain mired, or will he evolve?

  104. crooked road | December 29, 2012 at 6:49 am

Oh, yeah. For those who think Frank hasn’t already made his selections and aligned everything, you’re mistaken. All choices were made well before the game, the game results didn’t matter. Frank didn’t do this willingly. The moneyed interests that fund his salary forced him into action, only after severe arm twisting. There was zero proactivity involved. The choices have been made, the only question is the date of the announcement. My estimate is not before January 3rd, not later than Jan 15th.

  105. proof reader | December 29, 2012 at 8:34 am

Horrible game, even in a win the Hokies lose. The play in this game was very disappointing. If this is what fans have to look forward to next year,I am out. My guess is Thomas is gone even if he becomes a 7th round projection. Leal will be no better with that offensive line. Already rumors are flying Kevin Sherman is gone, and I am sure others will follow either by choice or not. There will be a new look in Blacksburg next year. ACC Basketball season can not get here soon enough.

  106. crooked road | December 29, 2012 at 8:59 am

You know, Kevin Rogers as Frank’s choice doesn’t necessarily translate into greatness. When Frank puts his shackles on KR as to offensive philosophy, then it gets right back to the origin of the problem that was so evident, yet never discussed, in Stinespring’s coronation – Frank made his choice because of Frank’s ineptitude in understanding offensive football strategy.

Kevin Rogers – Frank’s choice, not mine – won’t solve the world’s problems, because Frank won’t let him. Let’s just keep that in mind. Stinespring being ‘gone’ into a job as Recruiting Coordinator with equal pay – roughly FOUR TIMES THE NATIONAL AVERAGE – of ‘normal’ recruiting coordinators, while still whiffing on just as many 5-star recruits as any other overhyped and underperforming recruiter over the last decade or more.

It won’t get any better, but the apologists, like the Yellow Rose of Texas, will keep on bleating their mantra, and the trophy case will remain as dusty as the back road into El Paso.

  109. stephen a | December 29, 2012 at 9:46 am

congrats to foster! he won the game. beamer was no more than a foolish sideline distraction.

  110. Trevor | December 29, 2012 at 9:47 am

Once again, Journell was the pivotal player that sealed the game for Virginia Tech. Fittingly, he won the Georgia Tech game and then last night, he came through. Props to him.

If it was not for the lunch pail defense, Rutgers could have turned the bowl game into a laugher. Instead, the defense did what they are always known for, working their collective asses off and giving the woeful offense every chance to capitalize. The east to west running was nonexistent yet the play calling kept giving those calls. I’m sorry but the offense staff have to undergo painful makeover. I heard rumor that Sherman is going to Purdue to coach recievers. Heard that Newsome might return to JMU. Nothing on what may happen to O’Cain, my feeling is he is given a more than generous retirement package and sent packing. I doubt Beamer would ever get rid if his adopted son, Stinespring, because Beamer have always gone to bat for him in spite of how woeful Stinespring runs the offense.

The officiating crew last night were horrible. Seem almost on every other plays they were whistling Tech for this penalty or that. Beamer got so mad at one point, rain weren’t touching him, but were steaming.

Thankfully the football season is officially over for Tech. Let the “healing” take place. LOL.

  111. rpotts12 | December 29, 2012 at 9:49 am

Wouldn’t Frank be doing a favor for his coaches by letting them go sooner rather than later so as to catch on somewhere else? These guys do have contacts that they may parlay into jobs. See Sherman at Purdue?

  112. Joe Hokie | December 29, 2012 at 10:04 am

I’m not the conspiracy theory type, but this is the second bowl game in a row where the officials hosed VT worse than the barrel in the 4th of July volunteer fire department “Battle of the Barrel” contest. Do replay rules not apply in bowl games? Why was that first “touchdown” not reviewed (was Thomas’ knee down?) or contested by VT over touchdown vs. safety? ESPN didn’t help through the whole game with its selected replays. Grounding call against VT? Sure, it was valid and no replay showing who was in that part of the field (a VT player was in the vicinity of a badly thrown pass). Rutgers QB slams the ball into the ground in front of him, but no penalty because there was a receiver “close” to the ball (a few yards away, with his back to the QB, and no validation of whether he was eligible). We won’t even talk about “pass interference” on the interception. Those Big 12 officials made ACC zebras look semi-competent. So one has to take the penalty yards with a grain of salt (not that VT didn’t bring on some things themselves, such as delay of game).

So, whose rules are in effect in a bowl game? Does the Big 12 have a slightly different rulebook than the ACC?

Not that it all could be put on the officials — the VT coaches (despite the claim of a simpler offensive play book) did their usual thing and signaled in some dozy calls and went with the “if it is working, stop doing it” plan. No one but the players, who finally got Rutgers figured out and played with some passion (and the defense who played that way all game), should be proud of this game. We can only hope there are some offices becoming empty in the Merryman Center real soon now (and please get away from the “Stinespring as recruiting coordinator” thoughts — if he were that good, there would be more Virginia high school players staying in-state).

  113. BobH | December 29, 2012 at 10:37 am

    Joe,

I believe Bill and Mike were saying on the radio pre-game show when they introduced who the officials were that they are either THE officials for the BCS championship game or were last year.

Like it or not, that could be the creme de la creme…..

  114. jamco | December 29, 2012 at 10:45 am

Its is time… It is time to close the VT Footbal program forever!

  115. Barry From Ivy | December 29, 2012 at 11:22 am

Nova definitely gets the MVP award for the Hokies. But a win is a win, I don’t need to say more; just read all of the comments by others on this blog, that says it all. You guys need some new coaches AND some new players. Go Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.

  116. Beamer Best all-time | December 29, 2012 at 12:08 pm

I’m a lifelong Hokie fan born and raised in neighboring Pulaski Co. This Christmas my sons gave me VT floor mats for my truck, my girlfriend gave me some VT PJs, my brother gave me a really nice VT hooded sweatshirt. I was happy and very appreciative! By the end of the 3rd quarter I was wondering what in the world I was going to do with all this s*^t! LOL!
I started reading the comments on this blog and got a great laugh from Rick H. (comment #38)! Thanks Rick, that made the bowl game tolerable for about 5 mins!
Crooked – I for one enjoy your comments so please keep them coming, they are entertaining at the very least.
The last few lines of Joe Hokie’s comment(#112) hits the the nail on the head as far as I’m concerned. It’s all about the recruiting! Living in the heart of SEC country I see and hear it every day. In my view Tech football will never consistantly be in the National Championship conversation until the recruiting reaches the standards of those that are always in the converation.(no need to list them). While the class of 2013 (verbals only) is an improvement I still see the best football players in the state choosing to go out of state. Until this changes I regret to say that Hokie Nation is in for the “same ole, same ole”.
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND GO HOKIES!

  120. Zman | December 29, 2012 at 6:23 pm

Dear Barry – why aren’t you strutting today over the quality of your Rutgers in a blowout prediction.

Crooked Road – I know you hate all things Beamer but you might read an article on “Gobbler Country”. Shane is the best recruiter we have ever had based on 4-Star recruits brought in. Hard to complain about Shane’s performance when you are reacting to a name and won’t let other points of view into your brain. This is not Kool-Aid. Read the article.

Ugly game no doubt. I have no idea how good Rutgers is but 9-3 sounded ok. A vicious defensive game no matter how you slice it. That Rutgers TD ought to be on a Blooper Highlight Reel.

If Frank didn’t care someone else would have been ripping the Refs on the sideline.

The line, the line, the line. They did not look good. “Bad play” would have been an improvement.

    But we did win. Phew…….

Now on to the best recruiting class in school history and then on to March madness.

  121. Barry From Ivy | December 29, 2012 at 8:58 pm

It would have been a Rutgers blowout if they had a decent QB. And you people know it. Tune in Monday to see GT represent the ACC in respectable fashion.

It couldn;t possibly be that he stunk because he was under pressure, right?

  123. Barry From Ivy | December 29, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Finally a decent bowl game tonight, Texas over Oregon State. The games so far have been nothing but misfits disguised as football teams. Hopefully it will only continue to get better. No more Rutgers or VT, what a farce on national TV.

  124. Mike3 | December 29, 2012 at 10:29 pm

VT Wins!! 1-2 this year vs. Big East. Stinys smash mouth running game got three yards. At least the rain made arguably the most boring game in NCAA history interesting. Some of the VT coaches may want to go to Best Buy and give away some of their Bowl bonus bling like Exum did this week to feel better about their themselves.

  125. Eagle | December 30, 2012 at 7:06 am

Neither team should of won!! They should give money back that went to this game. vt, national power???? Give me a break. They are pitiful.

  126. Zman | December 30, 2012 at 2:22 pm

All of you guys are being so ^&%&$%$^$ GERMAN about this.

For the 30+ years since I first lived there I had to listen to my German friends blab on and on about how their teams stinks because they don;t win every game with grace and beauty and total dominance across the field. Even the years they won the World Cup they were dissatisfied because the wins weren’t beautiful enough.

    Talk about spoiled rotton fans…

Now I am not, and never have been, a Stiney fan. But he is running the offense that the boss wants. If he wasn’t, he wouldn’t have lasted. Stiney has had some times when things went pretty weel (like the end of the Taylor years).

60 guys can play QB in the NFL at an acceptable level and maybe 4 of them are really “elite”. Maybe 250 can play acceptably at the FCS level. Thomas is generally viewed as a “talent” rather than “NFL Ready”.

Thomas does not suck. He is one of about 250 people, out of 350 million, who can do what he does.

Face it. YOU CAN’T DO WHAT HE DOES. You aren’t as fast. You don’t know what an “arm” is because you don’t have one.

When it comes to Stiney; YOU CAN’T DO WHAT HE DOES. Is he a top tier Coach? P{robably not. Lots of evidence says “no”. Are you better? ABSOLUTELY NOT. If you were you would be a coach.

All you guys are are the same as me: a FAT ASSED FAN who watches and gets mad.

The fellow I sit nest to at work was a QB on the ’90 GT National Title Team and has shown me the “ring” to prove it. He didn;t finish at GT because he just wasn’t good enough. He could accept his limits, you ought to accept yours.

Guys like CR who view anything other than “They suck, coach is scum and no one at the U does anything right ever” have no credibility because they have no perspective.

I am glad AM has finally grown tired of it and has started to call him out. His shots at AM this week were totalluy undeserved and unsupportable. Talk about living in your own bubble of delusion.

We can accept and laught at Barry because he is clearly so biased. At least he admitted he was “wrong” over on AB’s site.

Now Beamer really does need to do something about the offense. I don’t pretend to know what he will do. One thing he should not do is listen to my direction. He should ignore you, too.

  127. crooked road | December 30, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Wow, I never knew the Yellow Rose was such an imperialist. Germans? Really? Remind me again, who is it that is irrational? The guy displaying facts about Frank Beamer’s lack of performance, or the guy ranting about World Cup Soccer on a college football blog?

Give me a moment while I laugh my butt off.

Okay, I’m done laughing at the idiocy of German soccer paranoia, for at least a moment. I have to say, Yellow Rose has been extremely quiet for someone who is such a blindered cheerleader of Frank Beamer. Yellow Rose, if you can wipe away your tears for a minute and actually engage in rational discourse – Even you should be able to put the pom poms down for a moment and provide your thoughts as to who Frank will bring in to replace hi current staff of circus clowns on the offensive (never a more appropriate phrase) side of the team.

I realize you’ve been primarily hiding in shame since the bowl game mercifully ended, but perhaps you could actually provide content, instead of just lashing out in tear stained misery at those who post the truth. Talk to us. Dry your eyes, and blow your nose. Then stifle your sobs and express some coherence for a change.

Who do YOU think will be replaced, and how do YOU think it will go down?

  128. Zman | December 30, 2012 at 5:40 pm

CR – You are a hateful worm and unworthy of response since you obviously can’t read or think. German obsession with winning beautifully has nothing to do with imperialism.

I find it interesting that one of our regular contributors stated that “no one would want” our coaches, yet several of those that are commonly detested get interviewed by others. I don’t know about any of you but most professionals I know look for other opportunities from time to time. This is not an indicator of a sinking ship. It is an indicator people looking forward – which they ought to do.

Coach may choose to shuffle the staff. He has done it before. If the past is indicative of the future, he will make his moves when he feels like they will attract as little attention as possible and if anyone is fired, he will do it with dignity and tact.

I suspect he has already decided what course of action he wants to take and will explain it to those affected shortly. Any of you who wish to see a whipping post erected in Lane and the beatings opened to the public will be disappointed. Sorry.

I also expect that the fans who write here will pretty much hate his decisions just as many hated the last round of big change. Billy Hite had a loyal following but it is hard to say that moving him was an error.

We desperately need new eyes on Special Teams. Our performance the last few years in this regard doesn’t live up to the “brand”. I have said this many times over the years. Beamer should not have held court explaining how he schemed the blocks, but, I guess he was building the brand. Others are now better at it and have specific schemes to defeat ours. Let someone else do it.

We have a long standing weakness in starting from behind. This is a poise problem. They could use some help in sports pshychology.

I think they need some help in the weight room. We run out of gas before others do. While I thought for a while that our program was solid I think that others are now ahead of us. Assuming the opposition is doing it “naturally” I hate to think that our conditioning program is falling behind. You can’t always equate physical training with injury but our lack of gas at the end, and the fact that our “big uglies” got pushed around this year, says to me that our weight training is “off”.

Replacing David Wilson isn’t easy but his praises are now being sung by people who questioned every “east-west” run and his fumbles (like JMU). Would that he had so much love while in uniform.

I seriously agree our special uniforms were god awful this season. I doubt that had a bunch to do with looking lost on the field – other than, perhaps, Thomas saying to himself “That uniform is so ugly the guy can’t be on my team”.

As to why the players looked lost on the field. “The snap” was really hard to accept. Marcus Davis routinely “checking out” during games is hard to accept. Both the clip that went viral on Davis and “the snap” will live in infamy. Just like the 2004 group will live infamy for mugging on camera during the BC loss.

Foster isn’t clean either. The CIN game being a case in point. PIT another.

Every team is different and the players are still kids even if we wish they were more.

Thomas will be a great pro on the right team. But it will take 2-3 seasons. He should go pro (my opinion) if he will go in the second round. He is tall, strong. fast and throws a nice ball. Nothing wrong with him that good coaching and a decent line won’t cure.

    Go Hokies!

    Lets play hoops.

  129. crooked road | December 30, 2012 at 7:40 pm

Ouch. Seems like Yellow Rose got juuust a little too much into the tequila, and far too early. I’ll try and transcribe from the blindered state of an apologist. Hey, Yellow Rose, notice I didn’t (correctly) label you a lemming? That’s because I’m respecting the RT rules of engagement and ‘not going there’. I’ll just stick with apologist, and you and I can both understand it means lemming. Here’s to a PC world, yee haw!

Yellow Rose, I understand that the Hill Country is a beautiful locale, filled with lots of bigots of Deustch heritage. That’s okay, I can understand that. No biggie on that one. What especially humors me, though, is your incessant drive to mislabel those who don’t share your narrowed views.

You mention that ‘several’ of our offensive assistant coaches are suddenly in huge demand, yet nobody outside of Hokie apologist websites mentions any link to facts pertaining to those pretend ‘interests’. Let me also be clear – no single reputable source has stated that ANY of the VT offensive coaches (how appropriate) has elicited ANY interest from ANY other FBS team. Maybe they have, and maybe the Hokie reporters have been lazy, time will prove that theory. All I’m saying is that NONE of the reputable sources covering Hokie football has reported any contact from outside sources.

So now Yellow Rose thinks the Hokies need help in the weight room? That Mike Gentry might be antiquated? Hello, Yellow Rose, you girlslapped at me for mentioning that back in the past spring. It’s nice to see you finally coming over to the light. I’ve said for quite some time that Gentry’s 1980′s mentality needs to be updated. Nice to see you finally agree.

Your blather about DWilson is interesting. I guess all your friends’ criticism of Wilson when Stinespring insisted on running him up the middle, where he was least effective, doesn’t matter nearly as much as your envy of those who pointed this out as a weakness of Stinespring back then, a year ago.

All in all, it’s fun seeing your desperate attempts at spin. I’m still waiting for you to actually comment on the new offensive coaches. Or is that yet another topic where you don’t regurgitate until you’re spoonfed the pablum? I’m eager to hear if you actually have any original thoughts. I’m virtually breathless in anticipation of an original thought from you…

  130. crooked road | December 30, 2012 at 7:50 pm

Yellow Rose – New eyes on special teams? Let me guess, that means the magical name of Shane – cue the angels singing – BEAMER. Especially since he is genetically predisposed to excel in special teams coaching.

Hey, Yellow Rose, here’s a quick fact for you, courtesy of AB – Rutgers has blocked 38 kicks in the last five seasons. The Hokies have blocked less than 20% of that. Yeah, you know all those excuses by the ignorant (uninformed) apologists of Frank who pretend it’s now impossible to block kicks, because Frank doesn’t even try any more? This shows their ignorance (lack of knowledge). Ever feel labeled, Yellow Rose?

Somehow, because their coach cares enough to WORK, Rutgers manages to block kicks, despite the Beamer apologists pretending it is impossible these days. Funny how easily that disproves the apologists and proves that effort fills trophy cases.

Lets ease up on the personal attacks, guys. We can make our points without name calling.

  132. Bob H | December 31, 2012 at 9:54 am

    Barry,

I think you made your prediction of the rout knowing who the Rutgers QB was.

I realize you are now grinding for reverse gear, perhaps a mea culpa would be a better strategy.
