Monday: Playing through pain
Sorry, guys. I’ve had some strange health issues since the bowl game that I’m still not fully over. But like RG3 last night, I’ll give it a go today. Hope this one ends better.
SPEAKING OF RG3, what was Mike Shanahan thinking? The guy clearly couldn’t plant his foot and throw after aggravating his knee injury in the first quarter, yet there he was, hobbling around in an eventual 24-14 Seattle victory. The sight of him writhing in pain after the fourth quarter fumble was as predictable as it was disturbing. To me, the results of the MRI are immaterial. Shanahan let his franchise quarterback and his team down by leaving the guy in there.
REAL NICE WIN FOR UVA LAST NIGHT, as the Cavs get 19 points from Joe Harris to defeat North Carolina 61-52 in their ACC opener. Keeping with the theme of the day, Akil Mitchell comes back from a leg injury a week ahead of schedule to help facilitate the victory.
I HAVEN’T TALLIED UP ALL THE BOWL GUIDE RESULTS YET, but I know it will finish with a winning record against the spread. Last pick is Notre Dame plus-10 tonight.

Good luck with your health. Ultimately that is the most important thing.
I keep telling you that 3-4 of those Martinsville red hot dogs will clean your system up better than any holistic detox ever invented. Just be sure to get the chili & mustard, because they hold all the magic ingredients.
I was dreading the UNC basketball game on Feb 2nd. I still do, but now I’m also concerned about the Hokies on Jan 24th & especially Feb 12th.
No mention of Ray Lewis? The Balmer guy? The cornerstone of the Ravens franchise for its’ entire existence? Not even a whisper? None?

Hope you get better Aaron.
Agree about RGIII. What makes him such a good QB is the duel threat he poses. Without the legs he’s much more defendable (?) and I doubt he could even throw as well.
I love golf and the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. It’s a stunning venue. Too bad 40 mph winds knocked it out. Watched a ball being blown off the green as it was about to be putted! They’ll try again today.
Bama by 14…
Concerning tonight’s title came, I think it’s important to remember this isn’t the first time folks in Alabama have dealt with a leprechaun. Feel better, man.

Thanks guys. Good pull, Travis.
Oh yeah big win for UVA….this UNC team is the weakest in years. Pat them on the back and declare them conference champs. Not with that off they have avg like 50 points a game. RG3 better not have torn the ACL/MCL or they will run Shanny out on a rail.
As a know-nothing fan, I was initially all for playing RGIII last night, since he had a full off-season to recoup if he aggravated the injury. However, I had not heard about the extent of the prior injury until this morning; it sounds like this case involves cartilage damage that won’t simply recover with time. Here’s hoping that RGIII can return to his old self; it’s different circumstances entirely, but I hope we’re not dealing with a Bo Jackson “will never be the same” type of injury here.
On a different topic, is it possible that the ACC is actually a worse basketball conference this year than it was at football?? It certainly looks like Duke is the only legit team, and even they appear to be overrated at this point. It’s to the point where I’m debating over which game to attend Wednesday — VT/BC or RU/High Point.
Also, in considering who looks WORST coming out of the RGIII fiasco, I would rank them as follows:
1. Dan Snyder. He makes millions from this franchise, yet he has refused to do something about the awful field conditions in that stadium. Adrian Peterson was injured there last year, and Seattle blamed the field on Clemons’ injury yesterday. If Salem High School can have field turf, there’s no reason why the Redskins can’t install it to help extend RGIII’s career.
2. Dr. James Andrews. He has the reputation of being a genius, but as team physician, he came up meak and small throughout the past few weeks. He could have stepped in and told Shanahan to get him out of the game.
3. Shanahan. Enough said.
I was mentioning this last night to a relative, but mobile/dual-threat QB’s tend to have shorter lifespans in the NFL unless they adapt into more of a pocket passer who can scramble as needed, rather than as planned. Michael Vick has been hampered by numerous injuries due to his leaving the pocket and getting whacked. I really hope for RG3 that it’s not a bad injury…knees are a troublesome injury to recover from many times. Seeing him go down awkwardly in the 4th quarter was painful to watch.
As for ACC hoops, the leage does look down again. Duke will likely win easily…I think NC State is probably the #2 team, even though they’ve been a bit shaky at times. As for 3-5…it’s probably a toss-up between UNC, Maryland, and Miami. I think GT, UVA, and FSU make up 6-8…with BC, VT, WF, and Clemson the bottom 4. I suspect only 2 ACC programs finish the year ranked, and I’ll say that only 4 make the dance. As of right now, only 4 teams are inside the top 60 in the RPI: Duke, Miami, NC State, and UNC. Maryland is just outside of that (68), as is FSU (75). UVA, VT, GT, BC, and Wake are in the 115-155 range, and Clemson is 200+.
I really do not understand the thinking of Coach Mike Shanahan of the Redskins in regards to leaving in an injured quarterback, who at best, is limping on the field just to get back to the huddle???……..I have been a Redskins fan for 40 years, I have never seen a coach make such a ridiculous decision and jeapardize a “ROOKIE” quarterback’s future like that……..?
You have a very capable and proven back-up QB in Kirk Cousins, so, Shanahan will have a LOT of explaining to do on this one……………”ONE” game, rather it is a playoff game or not, is not worth permanent damage to that young man’s career or the future of the team…………….SHAME ON YOU, SHANAHAN!!!!…SELFISH MOVE!!!
BBAT as usual you don’t know what the heck you’re talking about. UNC averages 81 ppg and they give up 69 ppg. As for UVA they have one of the best defenses in the country and were ranked second in ppg allowed. This UNC team isn’t the best ever or the best in the conference but they have only lost 4 games and all were to good teams. None of us UNC fans exepcted a NC type year but that happens when you lose 4 players to the first round NBA draft. Of course I don’t expect you to know what that feels like.
Now on to football. What’s the latest on the Offensive Coaches at Tech? I think it will be pretty shady if Beamer waits until after signing day to make changes. I know players sign with schools and not coaches but we all know coaches play a big part in why kids choose a school.
Greg read the weakest UNC team in years. Before you going picking on others posts where do you expect this team to finish? Are they better than Duke? I stated that this is a weak UNC team. That is a fact.
So BBAT, you expect the Hokies to beat the Tar Heels since they are so weak? Ol’ Roy was out-coached: the point total was right where UVa wanted to be.
BBAT I was referring to your 50 ppg comment. Watch more than one game before you commment.
Guys, just ignore BBAT, Barry from the Ivy, and a few of the other trolls around here and they’ll go away.
Lots of chat today on ESPN about RGIII both prop and con to him playing.
I think the best team won and I hope RGIII will be ok. he is a very exciting player.
AM – you over 40 yet? Your body caves after 40 and stuff you never dreamed of happens. All at once, too.
A-MAC: Put your health first…get to the root of the situation and get it taken care of. Best of luck!
Hey beamer, it was a big win and a great way to start ACC play. I’d rather bear UNC to start ACC play then get blown out again by maryland
Aaron, take care of yourself, first. Love your column, but it is not as important as your health. The teams, the bloggers, and goofy stuff that happens everyday in this region will still be here. We can wait, your health can’t.
BBAT, I want to know where all of a sudden it is necessary to bash UVA. Nobody instigated you with a comment, nor did A-Mac say that it was a season defining win. He said that it was a nice win because it is still Carolina, just like it would be exciting for Tech fans if Tech beat them. It’s the first conference game, seriously.
Playing hurt/injured is part of the game. You can second guess MS but at the end of the day if your best player says he can compete, you play him, unless the medical staff steps in. The weak link here sounds like the doctor. He needs to grow a pair.
Uva scores 64.5 ppg….gives up 50.8……I went and looked it up so the facts are correct. UVA usually squeks out thier wins by 1 point so asumming they score 51 is not a big deal. UVA cannot score enough to win most ACC games. Yes Tech should beat them as should most teams in the conference. UNC had a letdown. They owned them up there and kinda mailed it in and paid for it. Don’t think Duke will do the same.
Get well, the other columnists can carry it for a while. From an extremely old and athletically damaged individual, nothing is more important than taking care of your health.
AMc, any health problem at any age is scary, the strange ones even more so. Look to the periphery if things don’t resolve. Lime disease, for example, can look like anything! Meanwhile, leave it to BBat and Barry and crooked to keep things in order here in the sphere. NOT!!! But get well soon, we need your reporting, your perspective…and appreciate it.
BBAT- You may want to try spell-check before submitting your comment since its obvious you didn’t pass spelling class in grade school. It’s unlikely that VT will beat them this year, but thinking you may be a Duke fan in Basketball from your comments. Maybe you’re a VT fan for Football and Duke fan in Basketball when the season rolls around? Can’t blame you for that, really.
So, no discussion of Ray Lewis, I see. Well, Barry Bonds is coming up for Baseball Hall of Fame on Wednesday, so we’ll see how that is promoted and discussed.
Would like to point out that yes, UNC is having what for them is a down year, and a lot of that can be attributed to youth…but they still have more experience (Virginia has one scholarship senior), and more experienced talent than UVa. It was a nice win.
I agree Aaron leaving RG3 in the game was a stupid thing to do. He is one of the best quarterbacks the Redskins have had in a long time and I hope he will recover in the off season. He is the future of the Redskins.
Everybody should go easy on BBAT, he’s a 12 year old
#27, it’s not real unless you whine about having a fake lower number of scholarship players on the roster than actual, in order to gain sympathy. Also, pretend this was unexpected in the history of collegiate basketball, that someone might get injured, and a weak team would be further undermanned.
Anyway, you’re a ‘hoo, so we really don’t care about your win, except that it means you’re much more likely to defeat us.
Seattle should have won the game by 3 touchdowns easily. They are a much better team than the Skins. Russell Wilson is better than RG3 or Andrew Luck and so glad to see it becoming evident. Nice tackle by Deangelo Hall.
Wow, all the media are flooding out with their excuses. It seems like there is a very large preponderance of baseball fantasy league whores in the press. Barry Melonhead Bonds might actually get in on the first ballot. The sycophants – yeah, they are the remora and eager to be so – all while ignoring the entire history of the Baseball Hall Of Fame and all the guidelines for voting within.
Heck, it evidently doesn’t matter, because all the Playstation geeks want to get their BARRY BONES on. My question is – Why don’t we have some kind of commemorative swollen head souvenir for all the lemming media to wear while they hide behind their votes with the lie that – ‘Well… sorta… everybody did it… maybe… we pretend… while we all looked the other way… but…’
Wouldn’t it be nice if honor actually meant something? Even Pete Rose thinks so…
