Tuesday: Good test for UVa tonight

nc state uvaINTRUDER ALERT: Virginia puts its 11-game home winning streak on the line tonight against No. 19 N.C. State (7 p.m. ESPN2.) The Cavs, winners of three straight overall, are a 3.5-point favorite over a Wolfpack team that has beaten Duke and North Carolina. Doug has a preview of the game here.

oregon footballDUCKS ON THE POND: UVa has added Oregon to its football schedule this year. The Ducks, who finished No. 2 in the AP poll, will visit Scott Stadium on Sept. 7. The planned trip to Penn State, meanwhile, has been been postponed until a later season. Doug has more here.

YOUR TURN: Michigan takes over the No. 1 spot in the AP poll for the first time since the Fab Five days 20 years ago. Can the Wolverines hold it, though? The previous two owners of the top spot, Duke and Louisville, spent just one week at No. 1.

JURISPRUDENCE: Virginia Tech redshirt freshman linebacker Dahman McKinnon has been on an indefinite suspension from the football program since Dec. 30, when he was arrested for failure to stop after a traffic accident. Andy has more here.

CHASING SNEAD
Tiger Woods puts the finishing touches on a four-shot victory at Torrey Pines — his eighth career victory at the course. With 75 career wins overall, he’s now seven behind Sam Snead for the all-time record.

ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: 61 percent of NFL players disapprove of Roger Goodell…Kansas holds off WVU to extend winning streak to 15.

NAME THAT TUNE
I’m only pretty sure that I can’t take anymore
Before you take a swing
I wonder
What are we fighting for
When I say out loud
I want to get out of this
I wonder
Is there anything I’m going to miss

AMc, since you were out of commission during the announcement, what were your thoughts about the steroid guys – Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, & Sammy Sosa being denied Hall of Fame election? Do you have a vote for that?

Would love to blog but I’m off to the golf course. Have a nice day everyone.

  3. Trevor | January 29, 2013 at 7:54 am

The great thing about Oregon coming to Virginia is to see how the Ducks flies without Chip Kelly. According to Twitter, I hear that Bill Lazor is joining Chip Kelly in Philly.

NC State was the preseason favorite to win the ACC, so I think NC State has a slight edge after beating UNC over the weekend. It should be an interesting tilt.

AMac–welcome back. I was wondering, though, about that taking second week off to recuperate. I mean, if it had been carpal tunnel, or even a rotator cuff, I could understand. But, isn’t a brain injury for you similar to a DH injuring his throwing arm?

Does this Oregon game give UVA 8 home games next year? And, with BYU and Oregon coming in, will those West Coast teams be attractive enough to fill Scott Stadium?

  5. Sloth | January 29, 2013 at 8:03 am

Song is “How’s it Going to Be” from Third Eye Blind – a great example of how tough it is for a band to follow up a huge first album. I think if Wake Forest can beat NC State at home that the Hoos will too.

  6. 89Hoo | January 29, 2013 at 8:42 am

Virginia also beat UNC, hasn’t played Duke yet. Virginia also beat Florida State, who got a lot of hype, by twenty (at Virginia’s pace, that likes winning by fifty). Both State and Virginia have lost to Wake, so…it should be a good game. Virginia has been good at the JPJ

  7. Aaron McFarling | January 29, 2013 at 8:47 am

Sloth nails the song. Nicely done.

CR — I don’t have a HoF vote but wasn’t surprised by the results. I think all those guys will get in eventually, but there was no way they were getting in on the first ballot. A little surprised Biggio didn’t get the nod, but I’m guessing there were some voters who turned in blank ballots out of protest, damaging his chances and others’.

Can’t wait to see Oregon next year. Big game for UVA tonight if they want any chance of going to NCAA tournament this year. Loving the UVA freshmen so far. Hopefully they don’t have anybody leave early again.

Of course you have a 61% player disapproval rating of Roger Goodell when 61% of your players have a thug mentality like James Harrison. If Goodell had a better rating among players, then he’d probably be a push over. Trying to expand the schedule was a bad idea however in my opinion…perhaps that was some of the poor sentiments related to this rating.

    Ken,

I’m not sure about BYU, but I think the Ducks will draw. I know my 12 year old is a UVa fan, but an even bigger college football fan. When I told him last night that the Ducks were coming to C’ville, he said, “We’re going to get killed, but I can’t wait to see those uniforms in person.” This from a fairweather fan that I can’t get to go to a game if the ‘hoos aren’t favored. In all seriousness, I think a lot of folks will come out to see the Duck’s fast paced offense in person (assuming it’s the same under the “new” regime, which I think it will be).

I commented yesterday how VT’s 2-3 zone was too soft and allowed CU far too many open looks for 3′s. This chart pretty much sums up how teams are feasting on this weak defense. Teams which are not know for their perimeter shooting are having their way against it. Apparently the word is out as opponent’s 3 point% against VT have sky rocketed:

Yes, Doug is a has been.

  13. Ralph | January 29, 2013 at 11:19 am

Anybody watch the Louisville Pitt game last night? Freshman named Harrell was the first guy off the bench for the Cardinals. Big forward/center who plays with a lot of energy. He would have made every one on our team better-even DFS who might have stayed to play with him. Seth made and was making a football school relevant in ACC basketball. Weaver can`t defend that decision-evidently he didn`t have to.

  14. Zman | January 29, 2013 at 11:23 am

Goodness its boring here today. CR, someone, please throw a temper tantrum…..

  15. PeterJ | January 29, 2013 at 11:36 am

Aaron, do you think Biggio will get in eventually? There is talk that he never had a hall of fame season and that he just compiled stats due to longevity.

  16. crooked road | January 29, 2013 at 11:55 am

#13 Z, how many words do I have to post before you qualify it as a rant? Three paragraphs? Isn’t that the normal interest capacity? Insert smiley face here…

We could talk about Hokie basketball or we could talk about the upcoming football game this weekend. Is it this weekend?

Tech’s got a dozen regular season games left in hoops. Anyone want to do an over/under on how many more games they win?

There’s lots of sports topics out there. Like the whole ARod doping clinic in Miami, for example. Gregg Williams being rehired while still being on probation. It’s just got to be entered into the discussion, though.

  17. crooked road | January 29, 2013 at 12:03 pm

Zman, nor a CR level Temper Tantrum but a temper tantrum none the less. Weaver brought JJ back 2 weeks after the fact because he couldn`t get anybody else at that late date. Does that team look any better coached or play any better defense then the same guys last year? I want JJ to succeed and his 5 recruits to be good but all this seems so unnecessary. I`ll go 4 on the over/under and that might be a stretch. Not even Mark Levine quality either, I know.

  19. RP | January 29, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Recall that Oregon lost its first game of the Chip Kelly era at Boise State several years ago (it was the win that really put Boise State on the map). It took several weeks for Chip Kelly to get things going for them after he replaced Mike Belotti. (At the time, lots of people thought Belotti was irreplaceable.)

I wouldn’t put it past the Hoos to keep that one close…

  20. Ralph | January 29, 2013 at 12:26 pm

Aaron, I see that you didn`t mention Hooters closing in the briefing. Maybe Guy should have done a show from there to help them out. Triple D would seem to fit right in at Hooters, wouldn`t it?

  21. Original Greg | January 29, 2013 at 1:16 pm

So if Lazor is really gone would Tom O’Brien just slide into that spot or would they go looking this late in the game? Not to mention FSU is searching for an OC right now too.

As for the Oregon game, I think it will do well at the box office. I’m thinking about going just to see the Ducks. We don’t get many chances on the East Coast to see those teams. I’m betting there will be a lot of Green and Yellow in the stands.

  22. Trevor | January 29, 2013 at 1:27 pm

OG, how about the Tar Heels lately? They truly are a Mr. Hyde and Dr. Jeykell team this year! I guess it’s tough to reload when talented players are getting more times elsewhere.

  23. Trevor | January 29, 2013 at 1:28 pm

CR, now that you mentioned Gregg Williams, I have a thought. I think Gregg wants to be close to Hokiesburg so he can catch a game or two of his son in the orange maroon. Rebuttal?

#18. I don’t know enough about basketball to judge a coach in JJ’s position. I can only tell you what I see. The kids look like they are having fun and there are no histrionics on the sideline. I am not a fan of slow, slow, slower and slowest. I felt like, at the end, SG was force feeding a half court offense that we couldn’t play.

I would say that, with Green on your team, you always have a chance (see OK St). I also think we have less depth than advertised. So by that I mean our talent pool is 4 guys. If all 9 scholorship players could really contribute but it doesn’t look like they can.

So the over/under depends on Eddie hitting 3s and Raines staying on the court. I think 4 is a good over/under as well.

I hole high hopes for next year and if you want to see a bad coach – look south to Winston-Salem. They can’t give tickets away. They couldn’t sell out at $1.00 per.

I am in the group that says Ray Lewis is a bum and all his tears and so on mean zero to me. 9 children and a felony conviction mean more.

A-rod is well into the bum path albiet he is a richer bum.

Anyone for a Hall of Shame?

We could always talk Rodman and create a Hall of Odd.

  26. wayne goodman | January 30, 2013 at 12:39 am

Welcome back AMac. It looks like the Hoos met that test pretty well. That was good second half comeback. Nolte is really helping this team. And they play slow but they also play damn good defense. Anytime they shoot over 45% they’re probably going to beat you because you are probably not going to shoot it that well. If Bennett can hold these freshmen and have another good recruiting year I think the UVA program will return to its golden years.

  27. 89Hoo | January 30, 2013 at 7:45 am

26 – I agree. We should remember that Virginia is without Malcolm Brogdon, second-leading returning scorer, and is getting a lot of minutes from first-years. They do have more talent coming in, and the only significant graduation is Evans. I see a lot of the sports outlets using the youth excuse for UNC, but Virginia is every bit as young, and the talent they DO have came less hyped and less pedigreed. A good win for the Hoos.
