Duke-UVa in-game blog

uva stormage

Friday morning: Here’s Doug’s story on last night’s game. Working on a UVa column now for tomorrow’s paper that I think will be posted online by this afternoon.

Also, here’s the latest a Hokies Press Press podcast with Andy, Berman and me (we introduce some basketball talk for the first time as well as the usual football chatter).

Well, they tried.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the John Paul Jones PA announcer said with 22 seconds to go, “for safety reasons, do not approach the floor at any time.”

Good luck with that.

UVa students did rush the floor tonight after Virginia scored a 73-68 victory over No. 3 Duke. Joe Harris led the way with 36 points — tops in the ACC this season — to beat the team he grew up rooting for.

“I know how to spell Krzyzewski and everything,” Harris said.

Akil Mitchell had 19 points and 12 rebounds while going an uncharacteristically excellent 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Mitchell was also instrumental on UVa’s defense against Mason Plumlee, who attempted only five shots and finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in 40 minutes.

Plenty more on this one to come.

Halftime here at John Paul Jones Arena, where the Cavaliers lead the Blue Devils 28-23. Near-perfect start for UVa, which built a 9-0 lead. Duke didn’t get on the board until Rasheed Sulaimon hit a driving layup with 15:20 left in the half.

Joe Harris continues to be Joe Harris. He’s got 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Akil Mitchell has eight rebounds and is working hard to pump up the sellout crowd between plays.

Impressed with the first half play of point guard Jontel Evans. His steal and layup after Duke had cut the deficit to one got the crowd back on its feet.

Not much yet from Mason Plumlee, who has four points and four rebounds after playing all 20 minutes. Duke can swallow up deficits in a hurry, though; the Devils are the top 3-point shooting team in the ACC and have three starters averaging better than 40 percent from long range.

No Internet on press row (at least for me right now), so next update will be after the game. Enjoy the second half; should be a good one.

    GO HOOS

Haven’t seen Coach K this mad in a long time. Blue Devils showing bad body language.

  3. Drew | February 28, 2013 at 10:40 pm

Harris looks like the conference player of the year tonite.

  4. J | February 28, 2013 at 11:05 pm

ARE YOU STILL NOT ENTERTAINED DOUGHTY?!! HOOOOOOS

  5. Rick H. | February 28, 2013 at 11:35 pm

UVA played a great game. Tony Bennett can sing, and he can coach. This is from a Hokie, but his system is starting to come in. This probably (no, it very well did) cancelled out that ODU loss. If I were a coach, I wouldn’t want to play UVA in March.

  6. wayne goodman | March 1, 2013 at 1:47 am

{ think this cinched a bid to the dance for the Hoos. All the bad losses were early when Evans was hurt. He doesn’t score a lot but his “D” and his dribble penetration set things up for this offense. The committee will look at that. And now with wins over Duke, Wisconsin (away) Carolina, N.C. State, and Tennessee which is coming on strong in late season will all help. I said weeks ago that you couldn’t justify leaving Joe Harris off first team all ACC.
Now with his second half of the season, I think he deserves a serious look for player of the year.

  7. Ward | March 1, 2013 at 7:37 am

I have been a “Hookie” fan all of my life. I love Virginia tech, but as long as UVA is not their opponent, I will always pull for the wahoos, especially against the blue devils. I have enjoyed watching UVA play this year. They play hard, efficient, and most of all they play with class. James Johnson should really spend sometime studying uva’s film this offseason so that his players can learn how to fight off ball screens. Great game and victory for the cavaliers. I hope they make it into the NCAA tourney.

  8. J | March 1, 2013 at 7:45 am

Roanoke Times bias showing again, where is anything about the UVa game, I mean I’m sure yall hid it somewhere on this website but its not in plain view. Nothing on the main page about it, and apparently davis’ combine story, a story about the break up of the big east, a high school girls basketball story, a radford bball story and a high school bball tournament story are more important than Virginia beating the number 3 team in the country, duke. Wow come clear bias. Also why on the duke-uva preview is it a virginia tech-duke game picture? That makes no sense, you could have gotten a duke -Uva picture from last year. Good Lord this is irritating

  9. garry | March 1, 2013 at 8:05 am

contrary to headlines in this paper, and as someone thats watched most of uva’s games, this was not a “shocker” or an upset. hoos lead the entire game and outplayed duke at every point. this game was of national importance and uva ran duke off the court last night.

  10. Trevor | March 1, 2013 at 8:28 am

The balance of the universe has been restored with Puke’s loss to UVa.

  11. Ryan | March 1, 2013 at 8:54 am

It’s 8:54 a.m. and there’s still no story on the game on this site.

  12. David | March 1, 2013 at 9:20 am

Was it intentional that you didn’t spell Krzyzewski correctly in your article?

  13. Trevor | March 1, 2013 at 9:45 am

One of the greatest things about this country is the freedom to choose who I want to root for, and nobody can take that away. If I want to root for UVA to beat Puke, I will. If I want to root for Kentucky to beat Puke, I will. I don’t need any snot-nosed kid telling me otherwise.

  14. theo '85 | March 1, 2013 at 10:04 am

    (What’s up, Trevor?)

UVA has excellent traction right now, and has had it for at least the last 10 games, give or take about 20 minutes of ball (last several minutes of the first G-Tech game and the second half of UNC game that turned into a track meet). Lots of strong play, solid wins, toughness and now a high-value win late in the season against Duke. There are 22 wins on the plate out of the remaining 3 plus at least one round of the ACC. It’s not a team with enough bench to dream large right now, but it is a team that can play for a 4 or 5 seed and have a chance to win a first round game in the NCAA and, Hoo knows, make it out of the first weekend. Get the 22 (although, now, folks might expect 23 to avoid negative losses in the next 3 against FSU, BC and UMD, neither of which is an NCAA team) and a late season top 25 ranking (likely if we win this weekend).

A fan, sometimes also called aficionado or supporter, is a person who is enthusiastically devoted to something, such as a band, a sports team or entertainer. Collectively, fans of a particular thing or person constitute its fanbase or fandom. They may show their enthusiasm by being members of a fan club, holding fan conventions, creating fanzines, writing fan mail, or by promoting the object of their interest and attention. I thought maybe several people here needed to see this. Devoted being the key word!

  16. Perch | March 1, 2013 at 10:38 am

Geez, Trev, glad you can do that. In the contest last night, I sincerely hoped for a tie. Cannot bring myself to toot for either of them, but since only one could win, I hoped for Puke to completely demolish the ‘ville team. Hate ‘em, myself, couldn’t root for them if it meant the survival of the free world was at stake. The K crowd is like West b’God, tied for second on my hate list and not likely to move up. But you’re right, one of the greatest things about this country is the freedom to choose who you want to hold your nose and root for.

  17. RP | March 1, 2013 at 10:49 am

Rushing the court is so played out. More conferences have to adopt the SEC rule that bans it. I went to school at Vanderbilt —– they took that kind of thing seriously. Late in the game one year when we beat a highly-ranked Kentucky team (with Rajon Rondo), they brought out a few dozen police officers with billyclubs. It worked —- nobody dared rush the court.

  18. Roger | March 1, 2013 at 10:51 am

Wonder if the duke fans are chanting wheres your grandmother now. Worst fans in te country, coach K a pitiful person as well.. Glad they lost, hope it becomes a tradition.

  19. Beamer Best all-time | March 1, 2013 at 11:05 am

Guess you should rush the court when you only beaten that team 2 times out of 20. Bunch of teenagers!

  20. JSwift | March 1, 2013 at 11:33 am

Great Win. Lots of Energy at JPJ last night. The Hoos’ Defense is as exciting to watch as their offense sometimes. That’s “entertaining” when you can watch with anticipation on both sides of the court, not just for an offensive thrill. Harris is great to root for; the guy just plays hard. Great to see the exposure for him and the Cavaliers on ESPN. More talk of him as the ACC Player of the Year candidate. How can you say he shouldn’t be in the conversation? He is a more complete, all-around player than most of the other candidates.

  21. Tom L | March 1, 2013 at 11:35 am

UVA plays good defense which helps but the team can shoot. Unlike Tech whose shooters show up occasionally they consistently shoot the ball well. Run their offense, get a good look, knock it down. Would not count them in just yet. Got some season left and I would not trust the tournament selection comm. as far as I could throw them. Where Duke is going to have problems in the NCAA’s is rebounding. ACC is a weak rebounding conf. and when we(ACC) play the current Big East or Big 10 teams, we’re going to get malled. Good job for the HOO’s last night though.

  22. 89Hoo | March 1, 2013 at 11:35 am

I was a bit bemused over Coach K’s reaction to some of the foul calls. The beneficiary (along with anyone in Chapel Hill) of the most egregious home-court officiating has no room to complain. In fact, if it had been any other coach, he’d have had a technical.
    .
    Go Hoos…nice win.

  23. 89Hoo | March 1, 2013 at 11:37 am

And Mason Plumlee as POY? Seriously? He was maybe the 5th best player on the court last night, and that’s being generous.

  24. Clay | March 1, 2013 at 11:57 am

89 Hoo Great win for your Hoo’s!!! I was rooting for them all the way from CA although I have been a Hokie since arriving at my dorm in ’72, i don’t hate the Hoos and always pull for them when they aren’t playing the hokies. My father and a sister are grad’s of UVA and it has always kept things interesting around our dinner table over the years. My parents were married in Hoo’ville and my two oldest siblings were born there while my dad was a student. Even though I now reside in CA, I am a proud Virginian, and will always root for any Virginia team. I will be happy to root for your Hoo’s in the coming days! Unlike some of the posters on this site, I only “hate” the thugs and terrorists in foreign countries who have the goal of wiping our country off the planet. I could never hate the kids on a sports team, no matter which school, although there are a few schools like GT that I don’t have a lot of love for! Go Hokies and Hoos!!!!!

  25. 540Hokie | March 1, 2013 at 12:44 pm

Big win for the Hoo’s. I’ll pull for them against teams like Duke. Bennett has them going at the right time. Have to agree with Coach K though. They do need to be able to get the opposing team safely off the court. Things like that can get ugly.

  26. hokie hater | March 1, 2013 at 12:55 pm

BBAT please tell me how many times your beloved Chokies have beaten Duke the last 20 times they have played them. Also if I remember correctly the last time Tech did beat Duke at Cassell they rushed the court.

It’s Tech fans like you that are so hilarious completely ignore what goes on in your own backyard and then try to talk trash about the Wahoos for doing the same thing.WAHOOWA!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. JEff h | March 1, 2013 at 1:03 pm

A nice win for UVA last night but just a reminder UVA was FAVORED by 1 point so hardly an upset. That was a good but not great Duke team without Kelly. SEC has it right by not allowing the fans to storm the court since it’s a bad recipe to allow fired up fans to confront visiting teams players or coaches.

  28. Zman | March 1, 2013 at 1:16 pm

    Who cares? I want football!

  29. Other John | March 1, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Have to agree with Tom L…while UVA probably should be in the tourny right now, the selection committee is a fickle thing. The big thing, UVA still has 3 games, 2 on the road, and they really need to win 2 of the last 3. They cannot afford to take a bad loss after a good win, so beating BC Sunday is a must. If they have to lose a game, at FSU would be the least painful. A home win over Maryland is also a must…have to defend home court. If they do that and are sitting at 22-9 (12-6), they should be in…despite the earlier season bad losses. They largely played their worst games early, so hopefully the general surge now will offset that.
    -
Miami and Duke are solidly in the torunament, and they’ll both be a 3-seed or better, most likely.
    -
UNC is probably also in, but with home games with FSU and Duke and a road game against Maryland, they likewise cannot afford a bad loss…and could really use a win over Duke at home to close out the regular season. But, just on their name alone, barring an epic collapse, they’re safely in..but probably should be on the shaky side given a very weak resume.
    -
NC State I think is the actual bubble team right now, in reality. They got a nice win over Duke back in January, but have not done a lot since. 4 close losses, and 2 double-digit losses…with 2 of the close losses coming to not-so-good teams, and the other 4 to teams vying for tournament bids…it makes them look fairly weak. Their remaining schedule does them no favors either, with games at GT and FSU, and home against WF. They really need to win all 3, since their resume is fairly weak…but a small bit better than UNC.
    -
Maryland has likely played itself out of a shot by losing 3 of the last 5…despite the win over Duke. The losses to UVA, BC, and GT all hurt them. But, they have games remaining at WF, home against UNC, and at UVA. If they somehow won all 3, they’d be on the bubble. But, they likely lost 2 of those 3, or perhaps all 3. They looked solid through the OOC, with only 1 loss…by 3 to Kentucky, but have struggled in the ACC. Their best hope is to win out, and make waves in the ACC tournament, and probably make some sort of offering to the basketball version of Jobu.
    -
Given how weak the entire field is this year, I see the ACC getting 5 teams. Another 2 or 3 probably play in the NIT or CBI. VT gets to work on their XBox skills.

  30. David | March 1, 2013 at 1:41 pm

I guess it wasn’t intentional as his name is now spelled correctly. Is it now intentional that you aren’t adding in the comments that you made a previous mistake in the spelling of his name?

  31. LynnB | March 1, 2013 at 1:46 pm

Go Hoos! UVA will be even better next year. The best player may be sitting on the bench (transfer Anthony Gill – eligible next year) and PG Devon Hall coming in next year. They may need to get Jesperson out of the lineup. He misses completely open shots (I mean wide open) and his defense is weak. He must be really good in practice because he is not in the games. You just cannot miss on open looks in big games. Three or four misses can result in points swings of 12 or more points over the course of a game. Tobey or Nolte would be more effective.

  32. Barry from Ivy | March 1, 2013 at 1:47 pm

I see that Coach K was bellyaching about nearly being trampled at the end of the game, very exaggerated. Sounds too much like Beamer complaining all of the time when he loses, like chop blocking by Georgia Tech and all of that malarkey. Hats off to UVA; did we beat them?

  33. jaded hoo | March 1, 2013 at 2:10 pm

I don’t want to totally change the subject and take away from the Hoos, but did any of you see the breaking story this morning about the Pulaski County High School athlete that was charged with felonius assault? She was charged in December, but she was allowed to compete in the regional indoor track championship in January (and win). I know Tech has a policy in place where an athlete charged with a felony is suspended until it is resolved. I find it interesting that a high school athlete was allowed to compete. What do y’all think about this? Should the same standards apply?

  34. Ralph | March 1, 2013 at 2:33 pm

My friend at the Lnchburg newspaper has this headline after the UVA win. “Hooray”. I thought that was pretty good.

  35. Trevor | March 1, 2013 at 2:49 pm

I think the ACC tournament just got more interesting now. I think the finals may see UVa and maybe one of the Carolina schools. Going to be a very interesting tournament to follow.
    -
BBAT, I don’t care how YOU define what a fan is, I follow whoever I please, opinions be damned. I’m not a member of any fan clubs because I chose to have more control over where my hard-earned money goes, and saving a lot of money in the process. Have a problem with that? Tough. Get over it.

  36. RP | March 1, 2013 at 3:11 pm

I’d much rather have both UVA and VT winning at the same time. I’d love to see one of their games mean as much as some of the NC-based rivalries someday.
    -
I haven’t lived here that long (less than a decade), so my entire “life in Virginia” existence has been with VT as the dominant school in both football and basketball. But it seems to me that a lot of VT fans have become spoiled and, quite frankly, seem to be having a hard time coming to terms with a UVA win that this season’s Hokies team could only dream about.

  37. RP | March 1, 2013 at 3:15 pm

To echo those who say that UVA isn’t a tournament Lock yet, we only have to look back to two years ago, when the Hokies beat Duke on February 26, but then lost at home the following weekend to Boston College (and then at Clemson the following week).
    -
UVA’s schedule is the same — BC this weekend following the big Duke win. They need to avoid the letdown otherwise might suffer the same fate as VT in 2011.

  38. Aaron McFarling | March 1, 2013 at 3:43 pm

David–no, it wasn’t intentional. Wish I could say it was and save face. Just an ironic (but honest) mistake on my part. Thanks for catching it.

For those wondering what this is about, I left a z out of coach K’s last name in the Harris quote initially. Yep — Harris can spell it but apparently I still can’t after all these years.

  39. Other John | March 1, 2013 at 4:08 pm

RP, thanks…that’s what I was referring to…but I couldn;t recall what year it happened. I just remember the announcers proclaiming that the Hokies punched their tickets to the big dance with the win, and they promptly face-planted into the NIT instead. The big win is nice, but UVA can’t get complacent.

  40. VTRedwolf | March 1, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Great play by UVA. Nice to see a team win with crushing defense. If only JJohnson and VT could learn to defend the 3 and work through screens like that we could put up a fight.

Coach K can dish it out but he can’t take it. He’s oh so magnanimous when he’s winning but when he’s losing he’s like a 3 year old.

I still remember him scolding VT players for celebrating after we kicked his butt

  41. VTRedwolf | March 1, 2013 at 4:32 pm

Coach K can dish it out but he can’t take it.

Still remember him scolding a VT player after we kicked their butt.

  42. hokie hater | March 1, 2013 at 4:35 pm

OJ and RP you also have to consider the year Tech beat Duke and still missed the tourney I believe the field was still 64 not 68. Also the bubble is much softer this year than it has been in a few years, the win last night all but locked up a spot in the big dance for Uva.

  43. hokie hater | March 1, 2013 at 4:38 pm

Actually I take that back it was 68 the year Tech beat Duke and still missed the tourney, but the statement of the bubble being rather soft this year still rings true, Uva is all but in.

  44. Perch | March 1, 2013 at 4:42 pm

Clay and RP, please realize that “hate” is hyperbole for me when speaking about sports and I suspect many others use the term in the same manner. Sorry to have been unclear enough for you to misunderstand that. I wish no harm, no foul on the youngsters, have family members and good friends from UVA, etc. They all know that I will never wish for a UVA win, it’s got nothing to do with being a Virginian. I could accept one if it would help Tech in some way, but cheer for them? Nah, can’t do it. This is older than a decade, went back to the late ’60s for me and started before sports were the issue. RP, believe me, I notice every big win by the ‘hoos, and give credit where credit is due. I follow their recruiting, read most of their articles in the paper, know who plays for them. I have attended a number of UVA games in Charlottesville, vs VT and several others, as well as watching a ton of UVA games, football and basketball primarily, on TV. In every case, I cheered on the other team. But you are right, Clay, “hate” is certainly too strong a word.

  45. Zman | March 1, 2013 at 5:10 pm

I don’t know what you guys saw about the rush to the court after the game but social media has some video of quite the exchanges between Coach K and UVA fans. Coach K has a point that when the fans stormed the court he and his team were left to the mob.

I recall a game against UNC at the Cassell where Dean Smith’s car was stuck in snow and the students refused to help push him clear, but finally gave in and did. Big difference between then and now in the way folks react.

  46. Rob | March 1, 2013 at 5:32 pm

Actually Zman, he has no leg to stand on. The ACC has already reviewed and agreed with the way UVA handled it. Coach K and his players were notified during Thursday morning shoot around of court storming protocol (per the UVA AD). There was no altercation, the video shows one fan bump into the security surrounding the Duke team and was immediately pushed away. The team was completely surrounded by security locked arm in arm creating a wall. They tried to wait for the students to clear and led them into the tunnel. I’m sorry, what else do you want them to do? In fact, people behind the bench and at the scorer’s table have corroborated that and said there was no issue until Coach K tried to push the security ahead.

  47. Jim | March 1, 2013 at 6:24 pm

zman, nice flame…here’s some accurate social media…

coach k is really looking bad…

    Doug Gottlieb ‏@GottliebShow
So Coach K wants more security than the arm to arm yellow jacket guards that protected his club last night? Wrap the Devils in Blubblewrap?

Coach K is right, schools should provide more security, last night was an example of how to do it.

@GottliebShow If there was serious contact, we all know his players would have flopped to the floor.

  48. Beamer Best all-time | March 1, 2013 at 6:29 pm

Oh wow……u guys opened my eyes. It seems that the big talk last night was the storming of the court. Coach K doesnt want your dirty, trash talking, drunk fans touching the so called 3rd best team in the nation. Uva won. I’m clapping my hands now. They won big by 5 points. They were up what 13 at one point and should have been up more if that Jasperson guy could hit wide open shots. They are a great team of Joe Harris who scored over half their points. Those one men teams do well in the NIT…….Yeah I said NIT they will choke and lose to Maryland and BC. Hype is a big word in basketball. Big ups to the old men that ask their wives if they could stay up past their bedtimes last night. I know 9 pm games is pushing the sandman against the wall. And to think you guys got all excited for a 5 point win. Wait till the tourney. One and done for them!

  49. Rob | March 1, 2013 at 9:10 pm

Beamer best all time, seriously you weren’t even apart of that conversation and if that’s the best thing you can come up with keep your mouth shut and don’t even respond. You are an absolute idiot and are an embarrassment to your fan base. Learn a little bit about sports in general before you come on here, moron. My IQ gets a little lower every time I read your “contributions” to an actual conversation. UVA is not Miami, and Duke is a good team, UVA isn’t supposed to beat them by 40. Even if they did, it still wouldn’t be good enough for you. They could be 30-0, they still wouldn’t be good enough. If you’re going to be that ridiculous, write it in your notebook. Your derogatory remarks are annoying and uncalled for. I enjoy reading every Hokie fans posts on here except for you because you are so unreasonable it’s unreal. It’s a fun message board for both schools, so if you’re going to ruin the board by saying crap like that then please keep it to yourself. Apologies to every Hokie fan for the rant, except for BBAT

  50. Rob | March 1, 2013 at 9:12 pm

Not one of our “dirty fans” touched one of their players, it’s obvious from the clear video. Get yourself educated

  51. louisville and ucla paulie | March 1, 2013 at 9:51 pm

Hey BBAT,now you are a Duke fan? Just clowthatning bud . We like who we like your posts are just easy to pick on. Im sure you are are a big tough guy like the rest of us. dont take it personally like a little girl! But comer on homie the old big east was the the Stuuuuuufffff And watch ESPN Classic t will show you something. Keep a bro

  52. hokie hater | March 1, 2013 at 10:19 pm

Actually BBAT your math isn’t very good is it? Harris scored 36 UVA scored 73 and last I checked 36 is not more than half of 73, nice try though.

  53. pick a team paulie (amendend) | March 2, 2013 at 8:46 am

quit PICKING ON BBAT he cant help iti if he had to feed the kitty and take out the trash Maybe his xbox locked up and he has nothing else to to do!

  54. 89Hoo | March 4, 2013 at 9:00 am

31 – don’t forget about Malcolm Brogdon. The Cavs were counting on him this year, but he got hurt. He’ll rejoin the team next year as well. With Harris, Mitchell, Brogdon, Anderson, Nolte, Gill, Jesperson and Tobey starting to come on, and a whole passel of point guards to replace Evans, Virginia will be very very good.
