Sunday: Column/Daytona
Today’s column gives the backstory on how I wound up on the DL for nearly two months and, more importantly, makes one final attempt to thank everyone for their support. Happy to report that Monday marks my return to full-time status (and Thursday my first live game in 2013).
Here is video from yesterday’s crash in the Nationwide race that injured at least 33 fans. Scary stuff.
Kevin Harvick is favored to win today’s Daytona 500 at 9-to-1. Danica Patrick is 28-to-1, which might seem low, but the echoes of Trevor Bayne and Derrike Cope remind us that this thing is anybody’s race. Coverage starts at noon on WFXR; racing at 1 p.m.
I like Jeff Gordon at 10-to-1. He’s flying under the radar a bit publicity-wise, but those odds make him the second favorite along with Kyle Busch. Plus I always seem to pick Jeff Gordon.
Anybody want to venture a pick? Don’t forget that a member of the Blog Crowd picked Bubba Watson to win last year’s Masters when almost nobody was talking about him.
And finally, a touching story by Jay Busbee of Yahoo! Sports on a terminally ill NASCAR fan who fulfilled his dream of going to Daytona — and died in the infield Thursday.

Aaron, your column brought a smile to my face. You are more than welcome and I was deeply concerned when I heard you were in surgery. I am glad you are back on your feet and going back in full swing of things. Now, I am looking forward to seeing more Q&A with A-Mac.
Glad to have you back A-Mac and just in time for baseball season. Been praying for you.
DP is running 3rd right now. I think she will do it.
OK. Read your Sunday article. I am very happy you got, and continue to get, the support you need. Don;t go all water sign on us. You still have a hole in your head and when we disagree with your opinions we will point it out…..
Aaron,
Great column, and I’m glad to read you are doing better.
Unfortunately, I was just now getting around to reading your column – I was busy watching the left-turn festival.
-
Thanks for sharing that with everybody, Aaron. This is a very neat little community we have here. It is really very cool.

I may have nailed it on Bubba last year, but for all I know about NASCAR, I was hoping the sentimental choice would pull it off, the one everybody was talking about all week. She’s cute, and she’ll win some, and she will be great for NASCAR. ’5 Time’ was the last person (well, besides Rowdy Busch) that I’d have picked to win. She ran a great race, though You could tell, postrace, she was a little pissed at herself for dropping back.
-
If she had pulled down with Jr, she might have pulled it off – or caused the big one. That’s just how it goes.
-
The wreck on Saturday – yes, that was very scary stuff, especially when you have sat right in that area for a couple of races there.
Aaron, quite a story. How often do we take our health for granted? So glad you are on the rebound.
Thanks for the story on the race fan. Hadn’t seen that until now. My wife wasn’t real thrilled with me after I handed her the laptop to read it. I did, at least, give her tissues when I handed it to her.
AMan, loved your Sunday column and glad you continue to progress. Keep it up. Also, thanks for the article on the NASCAR fan. They are a rare breed.
