Wednesday: Weaver’s puzzling explanation
SOMETHING DOESN’T ADD UP. In Andy’s story today, where he talks to Virginia Tech athletic director Jim Weaver about Weaver’s request not to have any home Thursday night games this year, this quote is included (emphasis mine):
“It’s tough when you have children on a Thursday night,” said Weaver, who didn’t solicit input from athletic department officials or survey fans in making his decision. “If they’re driving any distance, they’re probably going to miss Friday classes in school. … Our fans have been so great and so supportive of the Thursday night game and the Thursday night exposure has been very, very good for Virginia Tech. I just felt we needed to give them a chance to have a season where it’s normal in terms of the fan participation.”
See the part that doesn’t add up? He’s supposedly making this request on behalf of the fan base, yet according to this story, he didn’t ACTUALLY ASK the fan base what it wanted.
In David Teel’s blog post that O.J. linked yesterday, Teel also points out that no fan survey was conducted.
“We just decided after our Thursday night home game last year against Florida State,” Weaver told Teel. “We just thought it was in the best interests of the Hokie Nation.”
So, Hokie Nation, does he know what’s in your best interest?
I know one thing: The fraction of the Hokie Nation that posts here doesn’t seem to think so — on a lot of issues, not just this one. But admittedly, this represents a mere fraction. So why not ask the people you’re supposedly protecting what they want?
I think Crooked Road nailed it yesterday when he argued this is largely about game prep (comment No. 61 here). Frank Beamer loves his routine — Monday’s always a certain way, Tuesday’s a certain way, etc. — and Thursday nighters disrupt that routine. If the ground under you starts feeling shakier than usual, and a 7-6 season will do that, you want to lean on that comforting routine even more. I think that’s at the heart of this.
But that’s not what Weaver said. Weaver said he’s doing it for you, the fan, because you want it that way. You deserve it.
Look. ADs shouldn’t be expected to conduct a fan survey every time they want to make a decision. That’s not feasible. But if you’re going to publicly explain your decision as doing the fans a favor, you really ought to find out what kind of favors they’d prefer.
WEDNESDAY’S OTHER NOTES
-Tonight’s Tech-Miami basketball game will be televised live after all. My19 (WDBJ Digital 7.2) will air it at 7 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled Maryland-Georgia Tech game. Berman previews the Tech game here.
-Three fans injured during the Nationwide crash at Daytona are considering a lawsuit.
-Top-ranked Indiana falls to Minnesota 77-73. No. 8 Florida also loses, falling at Tennessee.
-Jackie Bradley Jr., the star of last year’s Salem Red Sox club, has five hits in his first nine at-bats at big league camp.
NAME THAT TUNE
I took a drive today
Time to emancipate
I guess it was the beatings made me wise
But I’m not about to give thanks, or apologize
I couldn’t breathe
Holdin’ me down
Hand on my face
Pushed to the ground
Enmity gauged
United by fear
Forced to endure
What I could not forgive…

The average fan does not have Jim Weaver’s ear. I’m convinced that he heard complaints from a few older, wealthier donors and thought they represented the larger fan base. Also, the comparable weakness of VT’s home Saturday schedules the past few years cannot be ignored. Last season, the only game worth seeing in Blacksburg (and the only one that I attended) was Florida State. If I were a wealthy donor from Richmond, I’d be angry about missing the only worthwhile game, too. But there’s a better solution than giving away the Thursday night game —– SCHEDULE BETTER ON SATURDAYS, TOO.
Let me make sure I understand this. It’s been a good idea to have a nationally televised Thursday night game in Blacksburg every year since 2001 but it’s not a good idea this year but oh wait, Thursday night games will be back next year in Blacksburg.
RP, let me be extremely clear about this – this is NOT about Weaver acceding to the wishes of ANY fans, moneyed or not. It is about the desire by Frank Beamer to alter the game prep. It will NEVER be admitted, because that is not how Frank works, and not how Weaver works. The VaTech AthDept is quite slippery in stonewalling about things they think might tarnish the shield. For whatever reason, this is one they think fits that description.
-
Doubt me if you will, but step back for a moment and think about it. For the last few years, we have had not one, but two Thursday night games. One home and one away. Now, we only have one. Keep that in mind as you also consider this. In his interview with Teel, Weaver claimed he was doing this for the fans. Yet, later in the same interview, Weaver said that we’d have a home Thursday game next season.
-
So, we don’t have a home Thursday game this season because it will benefit the fans, but we will have a home Thursday game next season because…? The objective was NEVER about the fans. The objective was to reduce from two to one Thursday game. That still gets us on national TV, but also accommodates Beamer’s desires without it being publicized as the reason. Why that must be kept secret, I don’t know.
Love to see some Pearl Jam this morning. Rearviewmirror, to be exact.
I know I’m certainly upset about the no Thurs night game. This home schedule is just terrible and the only thing that could have made it better was a Thurs night game. At least with the Thurs game, we have some time to tailgate before the game. With this year, we’re looking at 5-6 noon and 1pm kickoffs. Heck, that probably goes right along with what Weaver wants…we know how he hates for people to enjoy an adult beverage before a game. That’s not Hokies Respect after all. That’s alright, we’ll go kegs and eggs in Lot 8!
I think your AD might be losing it.
CR, I can see your point. I don’t know how they can argue that it’s about the fans (at least the local ones) when they move home games to FedEx Field, either.
-
Anyway, for anyone that is interested, I shared a link with VT Athletics Dept contact info on Andy Bitter’s blog this morning. It has the mailing address, and also has Jim Weaver’s email address. (I was personally surprised to see this available publicly, but it’s there, so anyone who feels so inclined may make their feelings known to him. Apparently he’s still a Luddite who fails to make use of “social media”…)
Pearl Jam it is. Nicely done.
I think the point several have made about the rest of the home schedule contributing to the frustration is spot on. It’s February. People want a few fall dates they can really highlight on the calendar.
I can understand the NASCAR fans that were injured considering legal action. I also have to think, though, that some latitude be given to the extenuating circumstances.
-
I think NASCAR does a good job of trying to make the race experience safe for fans & participants alike. They could certainly do more, and I’d like to see them be more aggressive in publicizing those efforts, as well as increasing those efforts.
-
The first race I ever attended, we had good seats about thirty rows up from the track going into turn one. It was Charlotte, and just a perfect day. After 20 or so laps, I asked the guy sitting next to me if he wanted to move down to the huge section of empty seats right next to the track. I mean, there was just a huge ring all along the bottom of the stands that was virtually empty. There might have been 20 people sitting in what were 1000 otherwise empty seats.
-
My buddy said – ‘No way! Nobody sits down there! You get blasted with all the debris down there. All the little bits of tire rubber, the dust and trash from the track come up and coat you. Along with that, you get the oil all over you from the cars.’ I was surprised, but wondered why they even put seats that close. He said – ‘So that they can sell tickets to people who don’t know any better. Everybody calls that the chicken bone section. That’s where you throw your chicken bones when you’re done eating…’
It might take something as drastic as removing the first ten rows of seating at every track, then installing a second catch fence several feet behind the first, to best address the danger. It would detract mildly from the experience for those who like to sit in the chicken bone section, but sometimes you do what is best for the greater good.
After DW runs back a kick-off for a TD vs. GT on a Thursday night home game…. the announce says “Thursday night in Blacksburg. It doesn’t get any better than this” ’nuff said.
I’m old. I have to work the next day. I get there. Hurricane Isabel, snow, bitter cold, etc. Thursday on ESPN got us up here nationally, why diss it?
What the football program is, is entertainment. Winning makes it better, but if its entertaining enough, Weaver will continue the sell-outs. FB is the game-day impresario. He gets paid enough to disrupt his comfort zone and the ACC has accomodated VT by scheduling back-to-back Thursdays with a bye week preceding the first one. The ACC benefits mightily from these telecasts. More effort to schedule home and away with power conference schools instead of West Nowhere U has to pay off sometime too.
If the AD understood that he is running a business, he’d conduct surveys and focus groups of both season ticket holders (football and basketball) and other fans to really know what they want. And, is there a law that says that Weaver can’t find some entertainment that keeps fans in the stadium after the game so that there isn’t a single tidal wave of cars trying to leave? How about a post-game concert or something at the Cassell? If you’re staying at a hotel, what’s the difference between getting there at 11pm and midnight? Or even 1 am? Better to be entertained during the extra time than to be sitting a titanic traffic jam. The new scoreboard adds another dimension to the post-game.
Thursday night games are special in Blacksburg. National TV, a fired up crowd, it’s always electric. I LOVE the Thursday night home games. So does my daughter, who missed every one of them during her high school volleyball days, but now that she’s a college student, we got to share a Thursday night game last year.
One must realize that the more elderly segment of the Hokie Nation provides the most financial support, is also most likely to have Weaver’s ear and is most unlikely to be posting here or on chat boards. Weaver’s “fan base” may be significantly dirrerent demographically from that of Techsideline or the Roanoke Times.
How many “sold out” games in a row have there been at Lane? The Athletic Department likes to crow about how it has unloaded all the tickets for every game. It would seem that if Thursday nights were a problem, that “sell outs in a row” record might not be so perfect, as fans don’t pick up tickets to attend. But the place was full last fall for Florida State, so it seems that those who want to attend find a way to make it work. I agree with Crooked Road, there are other underlying factors that won’t see the light of day that led to this major change in how the Hokie Nation operates. Sad that there won’t be a game and sad that the AD feels the need to manipulate the truth.
I don’t blame the injured fans for trying to sue NASCAR, and I expect that they’ll get some kind of out-of-court settlement, but the real story from Saturday’s race is that the fence worked —- there could’ve been 50 killed if that car had sailed into the stands, but the fence worked.
-
The same can be said for Carl Edwards’ wreck at Talladega a few years ago, and also with Bobby Allison’s crash at Talladega in 1987. (If you haven’t seen that one, look it up on Youtube — it’s a 3 minute clip definitely worth seeing.)
It would appear that the ‘Thursday Night Massacre’ was done for reasons other than those given by the AD. It’s sad to watch all of this unfold. Miami doesn’t want to play Tech and FSU away in the same year, and the ACC says, ‘no problem’, Tech can travel twice in a row to Miami. What possible difference could it make to them? The BC thing is wrapped into a nebulus ‘additional teams create conflicts up the road that can be fixed by having Tech travel back to BC again’. Really? That fixes the scheduling problem? How does that work? And, what mastermind thought it was a good idea to play GT after five days from the last game ? Remember the Alamo (James Madison)! GT is a tough game under the best of circumstances. This schedule is a disaster even without the Thursday Night Massacre.
I’d love to comment about all this stuff, but the webpage is loading so horribly, with the comments jumbled and parts of the page unreadable, that until the stellar IT department with the Roanoke Times fixes this (I mean, holy hell…it’s been 10+ days, and it’s worse than ever!), I’m sitting out…because it’s about impossible to determine who said what right now.
-
All I know is that the whole Thursday night debacle is exactly that, a debacle.
Most ridiculous decision ever by Weaver. He needs to be relieved of his duties. It’s that simple. You don’t take away Thursday night football from VT, the home of Thursday night football. Don’t “reward” fans by taking away what they love. Wow. Amazing.
I do not buy the argument that Weaver made the request on the behalf of Saint Beamer so he could have his preparation routine. Why’s that? This fall, Tech hosts Marshall on Saturday and then hit the crooked road to Atlanta to play the bumble bees. Less than 6 days of rest and prep.
-
This fan is not buying that argument. No, Weaver is making this decision based on his gut feeling that fans wants to have a Thursday night off. It is the same gut feeling that led to the firing of Seth Greenberg. That old wheezy geezer needs to retire. He’s ruining his own reputation and becoming more like a sleazy used car salesman.
It appears that they’re launching the entire new website this morning, OJ. The blogs have been on the new site for a couple of weeks, and they’re replacing the rest of the site this morning. I think we just need to be patient.
Losing that Thursday game with a national tv audience is bound to do wonders for recruiting. As a UVA fan I hope VT keeps Weaver a long time. Only a matter of time until he ruins football like all the rest of the sports up there at VT.
#15 DH, Jim Weaver was made aware prior to the possible, reiterate ‘possible’, change in the Miami & BC games, and accepted the change. The ACC office does not make such changes without consulting with the member schools, any and all of them that would be impacted by the change. It is not in the ACC’s interest to not request feedback. Jim Weaver knew about the proposed changes and accepted them prior to any final decision.
-
#18 Trev, GaTech also has a game the Saturday prior to the Thursday night game, so both teams are in the same situation. Every season, there are Thursday night games involving teams that played the previous Saturday. In the past, VaTech has requested their two Thursday night games be back-to-back to give them two 10-day windows bookending those games. This year, they specifically requested no home Thursday game, and did not request the ten day window prior to the away game. Frank Beamer was the spark, and Weaver the catalyst in the request. Whether you choose to believe it, that’s your choice. You and I do agree about the required employment status of Jim Weaver, though. His retirement cannot come too soon. VaTech sports need to move forward.
Like Aaron and some of you said, Weaver doing this to appease Beamer and get his preferred weekly schedule back in place. The thing is Weaver is making up reasons that don’t add up and not being up front with the fans. The home schedule is dreadful and looks like a bunch of Raycom noon time games which are never fun. Not directed to this decision but I think Weaver should consider retirement asap because his health issues very serious and AD job is demanding.
Don’t forget, Weaver also is the same guy who signed off on 9 p.m. midweek basketball games (some of which weren’t even televised nationally). I doubt he had the fans’ interest in mind there.
Dude –
-
This DA of an AD is so out of touch with the fan base so how could he know what is best for Hokie Nation???? No survey – osmosis?
-
The DA of an AD doesn’t even carry a cell phone!!!!!
-
Time to retire DA!!!!

NASCAR – It does seem stupid to sit close to the action and then complain when the action ends up in your lap. This is analagous to suing over getting struck by a foul ball or broken bat while in the stands. You can sue. I don;t know if you can win.
Weaver – I don;t see anything nefarious about this. Thursday games are a pain in the patooza for the coaching staff and team. You do them when you need exposure. You get a little exposure, maybe the pain isn;t worth the gain.
A bigger question to me is why do we care if there is a Thursday Home Game or not? What makes this so darn special that we have to get up in arms over it? If the staff thinks its a disadvantage to the program, well, then dump it. Beamer has often called Thursday games a disruption. Why on earth are we demanding Thursday games?
Do we on this blog also really believe that our view is more representative of “the fans” than whatever input Weaver had? Do you really think you are speaking for someone other than yourself?
Funny to read you guys whining about Weaver listening to “older, well heeled” folks when many of you identify yourselves as older and seaon ticket holders or among those who often attend games and travel to see them. I tend to think that some of you are cranky because they didn’t ask you specifically.
Campus has to be closed early but later than tailgaters like. They complain loudly about the short tailgating time. People leaving the game usually get home/hotel about 1AM. If we aren’t winning enough, traveling fans skip the Thursday games along with a lot of older locals. When I worked parking for the FSU game last year, we weren’t full at gametime.
yeah, I see that now…jaded hoo. Now the blog site is working better. Things are still tricker and clunkier to navigate, I hope the IT staff refines things based on the feedback they’ve been getting.
And I second jeff’s comment about the games. We traded a nationally-televised primetime home game, for what will in all liklihood be regionally-televised 12/1 home game. That’ll help.
I just cannot understand how you can do something for the fans without asking them. If Weaver heard from a few but did not check with the majority then he is way to out of touch with the very people who are supporting the athletic department.
Reminds me of the “stick it in” decision. A handful of complaints triggered a knee jerk reaction.
I appreciate Jim Weaver’s contributions and service to the university – even though some AD decisions will always be controversial. However, it appears to me that his health issues are impacting his job performance and decision making. We need a full time focused AD. Perhaps it’s time for Jim and the university to make a change that benefits both.
CR, you and I are in agreement with the need for Weaver to retire. I still think the ACC did nobody any favor with their scheduling this season. Someone tried to point out to me that the ACC changed from 9 to 8 in-conference game, and causing ADs to scramble to find replacement, which in this case was ECU (if I recall right). The crazy thing is the back to back road trip to Boston College and Miami in Novemeber, which is absolutely nuts. And a repeat trip for Duke to Blacksburg.
With Nascar…I never liked sitting low in the stands when I would go…be it to a track like Martinsville, Richmond, Michigan, or Charlotte…or the Friday/Saturday night tracks all around Virginia and NC I’ve been to. I like sitting mid-way up or higher. It’s easier to see the action, otherwise the vantage point is cut off by the fence and the wall, plus it’s hard to see anything on the backstretch at most tracks if you sit too low. While flying debris was never a huge fear, it was in the back of my mind…seeing that most catch fences are basically glorified chainlink fences with stronger posts and some steel cables to hopefully catch an errant whole car.
OJ, you think you are having problems, in addition to IT start up glitches, my security software is blocking content. No problems like this 50 years ago. Remember folks, it’s the ACC, Atlantic Carolina Conference. They didn’t want us when we got in and they would prefer us to be gone now.Step children always eat at the second table.
So, did Lord Jim respect Hokie fan`s wishes when he pulled the plug on Thursday Night Lights? Apparently, he didn`t bother to ask; but, then who is the “we” he mentions? Frank or wealthy donors as some have suggested? Maybe he has Harvey the rabbit in the office with him. Okay, I know it`s only a figure of speech but it`s hard to believe that hr could pull off the Greenberg debacle and this one all by himself and not consult with anyone or have to answer to anyone. Another thing he has done is bring back “stick it in” because that is what he has done to a majority of Tech football fans.
Another crazy decision by a man that needs to retire now, not 2016. Stiney, Seth, now our Thursday nights. Every time we have a noon kickoff Weavers excuse is that TV sets the game at noon so it to be. Sounds like ESPN wanted the Thursday night game….
Ever notice how a lot of our other ACC schools schedule their pasty games at home for later afternoon, or god forbid, even after dark? Its supposed to be for the FANS to enjoy the day, not the AD.
So he has a email address. Doesn’t mean he checks emails or reads any of the messages from the public. I’ve sent him a couple emails that that were never acknowledged. He could at least have someone in the office type a thank you back (for your support, opinion, interest in the program, etc). I would say unprofessional, but this is pretty minor compared to how Seth was fired.
Tom L, I’m having more content getting blocked too. Some sites, the content being blocked renders the entire page unreadable.
NASCAR just released some shocking news regarding Jimmie Johnson and the end of his contract with Lowes. Today, Lowes released a press statement saying… they signed Jimmie to a two year extension. This means the end of his contract could come as soon as December 2015.
-
I know, shocking, right? I mean… you’d think Lowes would sign Five Time to one of those ‘lifetime’ deals like Dupont did with Jeff Gordon back when he was on top of the NASCAR world.
-
What? Dupont dropped Jeff Gordon a couple of years ago? I didn’t realize he had passed away…
Crooked Road- So Weaver/Beamer had no objections to taking on two more road games. I see them being informed ahead of time, but agree willingly? Why would he/they do that?
Here’s a couple of interesting tidbits to consider about Jimmie Johnson during his career with Lowes – This is his 12th season. Should he win the championship this year, he’d be averaging a NASCAR championship every other year of his career. Secondly, he has 61 wins in 11 years plus one race. Sounds like about 5-6 wins a year to me. Jeff Gordon (3rd place behind Petty & Pearson) is not too far off. It should get interesting in about four years. Jeff Gordon is ‘only’ averaging one win a season over his last six seasons, compared to Five Time’s almost 5 a season over the same time frame. It might be a close duel between the two to see who ends up with more victories. It looks pretty clear who will end up with more championships.
I read somewhere that a full-season NASCAR sponsorship (which are quite rare — even Dale Jr. does not have one) like Lowe’s sponsorship of Johnson can run upwards of $18-20 million for a premier team. Not having to worry about a sponsor until the 2016 season, particularly in this economy, is quite the luxury!
Wow, SF has dumped Alex Smith for very little. Seems the 49ers sent Ales Smith away, receiving only one second round pick in 2013 & one other unnamed pick in 2014. The lucky recipients? Kansas City Chiefs.
Shrewd move by Andy Reid. Smith is well-versed in the west coast offense & will do well there.
RP, you’re on point with those numbers. If I’m not mistaken, Jr has six races that he’s got no sponsor this season. Next season, he’ll have something like a dozen races, unless Hendrick can fill the gap before then.
-
Five Time has been fortunate since his first season, having the backing of Lowes. Prior to Daytona, Lowes released a press statement reaffirming their commitment to supporting NASCAR, and even intimated they would increase their presence. They didn’t elaborate, but merely fully funding the 48 in the future could lead to an increase, as costs rise.
The Tech fans wanting a tougher schedule should lobby the ACC office to switch crossover partners with UVa. Given UVa’s out-of-conference opponents the next few years I’m sure they would gladly trade their annual game with Louisville (replaces Maryland as UVa’s crossover partner) for an annual game with BC instead.
Well it appears that UVA has landed their 1st 5 star player for 2014 in Quinn Blanding
I dunno, guys — Mr. Weaver may really in true fact without the shadow of a doubt be concerned over whether Hokie Nation school kids miss Friday classes. It just might well be, however, that after last season Network Nation executives may have decided Thursday naights in Blacksburg just “ain’t what they used to be.” Just sayin’ . . .
I like the new football schedule with respect to only one Thursday game. Having back to back Thursday games stinks for me. That means I have to go three Saturdays in a row with no Hokie football. Saturday is the only day I can really enjoy football given my schedule.
Breaking News – 5 star safety Quin Blanding has committed to UVA
Thanks for the heads up. Here’s some more info on Blanding, who also considered FSU and UNC.
This is Weaver being Weaver, making unilateral decisions that further reinforce his perception as arrogant to the Hokie fans.
New fan cheer for games: Hokie Hi, Hokie Ho, old Jim Weaver has got to go!
That Sporting News article is so inaccurate. Blanding is NOT the highest rated player to commit to Virginia. That would belong to Ronald Curry. Of course, he never showed up on campus, but he did commit to UVA. However, no surprise on the recruiting front that this happened. London will do wonders with him, I’m sure.
Will reiterate my comments from earlier about the Weaver decision. Doesn’t bother me at all. Thursday night games – the novelty has worn off. JW might not be the most polished person is forming his position, but this one is spot on, as far as I’m concerned. I live in Blacksburg, so I’m the most unaffected type person, and I hate the Thursday night game. You have to rush home, get ready, and get there, and then get home at some horrible hour because of traffic. Friends of mine feel the same way. The college football game is the total experience, not just the game. You can’t tailgate before, or after, a Thursday nighter. A Thursday night game is like speed dating. You have to get in a lot, in a short period of time. At the price we pay for tickets, it simply is not worth it. Back in the days when Tech was climbing the ladder, it was really neat, but we’ve climbed the ladder as far we are going to, so let’s just enjoy the view from where we are.
My wife, mother of out two kids, made the comment that Mr. Weaver should know that it`s tough having children on a Tuesday night and Saturday night too. I`m thinking that since Miami is down a little bit and maybe be looking ahead to Duke and we have played pretty well in 2 out of the last 3 games, maybe we can hang with them tonight.. Now there`s a glass half full waiting to happen but I`m always hopeful.
Rick H I’m not a fan of the thursday night game either, but you and I are in the minority. Accept for the annual @$$ kicking by the one good team in our OOC schedule it’s our one chance for national exposure and not just for the team. It’s great exposure for the university and the great fans.
The point Rick is that he doesn’t care what you want and the next time he’s coming for something you do like. He doesn’t care what time you would prefer kickoffs, or about the basketball programs or anything else. He’s cares about your money and he’s already got yours and everyone elses. What you should be concerned about is his lack of concern for that something that is special to you and a majority of fans whatever that happens to be.
You should be concerned that when questioned he didn’t hesitate to mislead or perhaps even lie. That he says he hasn’t received ANY negative feedback. That there were positions that he had not considered. That he fired the most successful and popular basketball coach in decades without even bothering to show him the respect of telling him before he alerted the media that he was about to do something. This egomaniac is an example of what is wrong with college sports and VT is no exception. What exactly has Weaver done that is so great? Rode the coattails of Frank Beamers football program to bring investment to a stadium which would bring in more dollars?
I figured a bunch of crazy BooHoos would be in here boasting about their recruit. Well I had to listen to it at work and unless he becomes a QB this guy means nothing to them. If he can score then he is their savior. He plays defense=who cares!!!!!
Well, that’s going to leave a mark. Once again, the Hokies were completely dominated. Shane Larkin easily outplayed Erick Green in the battle of POY hopefuls. Yeah, Zman, you’re right. Johnson’s really got the program rolling now. 5-16 in their last 21 games.
I’m not thrilled with the basketball team right now either, but any of us try playing 8 on 12 for an entire season and they would have to install a defibrillator at half court. Give JJ time to get the numbers up before jumping on the man too hard.
Weaver throws a tradition in file 13. Perhaps the fans and students should petition the AD to open Lane Stadium free of charge to watch the GT vs VT game in Atanta this year on the jumbotron.Could be more fans watching there than in Lanta??
Weaver has been pandering to Coach Beamer ever since he got his backside handed to him by the power brokers when Frank almost bolted for UNC quite a few years ago.
Weaver is and always will be a Football AD only. His shortcomings since VT joined the ACC in all other sports speak for themselves.
Losing touch with the fan base with his Thursday night rationale only lends itself to increased scrutiny of his decision making or lack of, AD prowess.
What a difference a day truely makes!!
@#52. Boy, do you look like an idiot for thinking Tech could stay with Miami. Aaron might even suspend you from the blog for a day for that.. I watched a great pro performance after Tech didn`t stay with Miami. If you`all didn`t, check out the Davidson grad`s Garden Party stats last night.
First time ever I have agreed with Barry from Ivy. Weaver is not all there
I think the Thursday night games are just too darn late for our creaky old coach and AD. They are probably in bed by 8:30 or 9:00. Those guys did not make the decision “for the fans” but for themselves.
I don’t often agree with Jim Weaver, but on the Thursday night schedule I am with him this time. As any good Hokie does, I love any game at any time, but I am not a college student; I don’t live in or near Blacksburg and don’t have the luxury of being able to take a day off from work after getting home from a Thursday night game at 1:00 am. I don’t think one season without a night game is a sure sign the apocalypse is near.
