Court storming

Let’s keep the discussion of postgame safety – a viable one – separate from what happened at Virginia on Thursday night. Contrary to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s postgame insinuations, no Duke players were in danger at John Paul Jones Arena.

Watch the video. More than a dozen security guards are lined up in front of the scorer’s table, shielding Krzyzewski’s team from the fray.

Did he have to wait an extra few seconds to leave as the exit was cleared? Yes. And he looks like he wasn’t too patient about it. I get that; he’s frustrated. But visions anyone might have of visiting players standing shoulder-to-shoulder with bouncing fans aren’t accurate in this case.

If the rules need to change, it’s not because Virginia did anything wrong.

It appears to be just as tame as the Cameron crazies. As Seth Greenberg said on ESPN when you are at Duke, the fans are almost touching you on inbounds plays with their reaching out to taunt. Thought he had more class than that. Hope VT plays their guts out in Cameron next week and maybe sneak a win.

Coach K can dish it out but he can’t take it. If you’ve heard some of the vial and embarrassing things said by the crew at Cameron you know he’s full of crap. He was just mad he lost.

Reminds me of the time he scolded one of the VT players after we kicked their butt. Was that Delaney he scolded?

Anyway, he’s a whiny baby when he doesn’t get all the calls and magnanimous when he wins. Aaron how come nobody had anything to say about him running a full court press against VT up 30 points late in the second half?

I heard today how it was embarrassing for fans to rush the court and how you never see Duke and UNC do that. Well I don’t remember about Duke but I seem to remember UNC fans rushing the court when they beat us on a last minute half court shot. Seems to me Duke fans have done it as well.

I just hate this idea that Coach K is such a gentleman of the sport. Obviously a great coach who also happens to recruit the nations top talent, but he’s not a gracious loser.

A great win for UVA (from a VT fan). Great defense, great hustle and great teamwork something our VT team could surely learn from. Lesson 1 – how to work through a screen and defend the 3.

I do think Coach K is embellishing his position but UVA needs to remember they were favored by 1 point so hardly an upset. Duke is good team but not great especially without Kelly. I do think they should outlaw fans storming the court since it’s a bad recipe for out of control fans and frustrated visiting teams. SEC did it right by not allowing it.

Sour grapes Coach K !!! I guess the kids at Duke have never stormed the court? Cameron is a nut house on game nights so he has nothing to gripe about. Great job UVA.

  5. weeksrg | March 1, 2013 at 7:59 pm

I don’t know why Coach K is bitching so much. When I attended a Duke game a few years ago and VT beat them, I found the Duke fans to be most uncivil that I have ever encountered anywhere. Perhaps he needs to take care of the Duke fan base before he gets involved with those from other schools. UVA fans had every right to celebrate as far as I am concerned.

Great win by UVa. Having said that, I have to wonder what you hope to accomplish by storming the court after beating a team you were SUPPOSED to beat (UVa was favored). I can understand storming the court after a huge upset, or a big win in a championship or playoff setting, but a regular season win in a game in which you are favored seems a little sad.

Coach K is crying because Virginia kicked his butt. Way to go hoos!!!

  8. SoccerMom | March 1, 2013 at 9:48 pm

I couldn’t believe that was the discussion this morning on ESPN. Masterful diversion tactic to turn the talk away from the loss they suffered. Leave it to Coach Kray-Kray…

Never see Duke fans rush the court? Check out You Tube when Dockery hit that half courter to beat Tech a few years ago. Looks like a flash mob broke out on the court. To me, UVA did a great job of shielding the Duke players and coaches with those guys in yellow coats. I didn`t see any of that in Cameron that day. By the way, remember that team of Zabe, Gorden, A.D., Washington and Collins et al-now that was a fun team to watch.

My personal opinion was that K was trying to detract the fact that he was out-coached and did a poor job preparing his guys for the Hoos. Unfortunately it seems to be the storyline, even more than this momentous win.

In Krzyewski’s first year as head coach, a Sampson-led UVA team beat Duke by 40+. The Coach told his AD that he would never forget the loss which, to UVA at the time, was not out of the expected when playing Duke. Things have changed quite a bit in terms of the programs’ fortunes, but in 20+ years, Coach K has not forgotten a single point of that loss. Most people don’t know it from looking at things on the surface, but UVA holds a deep place in Coach K’s hate vault. But, since the feeling’s mutual, it’s all good. Nice win for UVA (Go HOOS!), but we’d have to go about .800 over the next 10 years against them to begin to satisfy this fan’s need for reckoning against Coach K. I don’t think that’s going to happen. So, we’ll let K rant about crowds and whatever else he chooses. Good win.

Thank you for clarifying the game’s reality. While team safety is a valid issue is offered a convenient distraction for Duke. UVA out played Duke the entire game and as far as their key player being benched….. if you can’t win without one of your players then Duke has a much bigger problem to look at than court storming. Proud of the Hoos, and not just for this game.

  13. frankpochick | March 2, 2013 at 8:07 am

coach K complains all the time. he complains to the refs about most calls during a close game . He just cant take a defeat very well. He could learn something about class from coach Tony Bennett!

I hardly believe Coach K has any particular disdain for UVA who hasn’t beaten them in over a decade. However, the guy is the hugest whiner – always has been. He ought to be a shamed of himself. ESPN reported that not only did he cuss out a fan, but one of his assistants came back out to cuss at fans and the players were also cursing at fans.

This game was huge for Virginia. It cements their slot in the NCAA tournament and was a win over a top 5ish team. Rushing the court was understandable.

(I can’t believe a Hokie has got to come on here and defend UVA – although my daughter is a ‘hoo)

Maybe coach K or( schorkowki )thatts what my EX wife would call him when she wandered into the man man zone and tried to to talk sports ) cant accept the fact his fans are a bunch of loons and a win over his program is gonna be news. He made it but when the SAINTS break into HELL they are going to celebrate Im not a UVA fan but it had to be a alot of fun despite what coach saint K ordains.

#15 – UVa beat Duke at JPJ in 2007, led by Sean Singletary. Second, Theo (#11) is correct – I’ve read accounts of Coach K’s undying resentment towards UVa, which originated with that long-ago 40-point shellacking (which I remember watching). I believe he hates losing to UVa worse than any other team; admittedly, it doesn’t happen very often.

This is simply about a master spin doctor trying to deflect attention away from two things: 1) UVa thoroughly outplayed Duke in all facets of the game; and 2) K’s Blue Devils aren’t nearly as good as people seem to think they are. If he can conjure up some nonexistent “controversy”, perhaps that will keep the NCAA selection committee from noticing that Duke doesn’t deserve a number two seed, let alone a number one.

  18. Spartan80 | March 2, 2013 at 10:03 am

Also, I was amused by K’s post-game comment about “burning benches”. Huh? Were any pieces of furniture set on fire in C’ville on Thursday? I thought the only thing that got torched was Duke’s D.

  19. Perch | March 2, 2013 at 11:14 am

Coach K is the biggest whiner in the biz. Sorest loser as well. He runs up the score, overworks the officials while winning big and already getting all of the calls, I just consider him classless. The Cameron Crazies, however, I totally respect. Creative, obnoxious, relentless, they always show up, seldom shut up, do their homework and create a unique experience that I hate for the Hokies when they have to go there. While I have been to a bunch of really good games at the Cassell with raucous sell outs, there are just too many times our team is playing to empty seats. That’s all I liked about that game in JPJ, getting to see Coach K cry….and whine….again.

  20. One thing | March 2, 2013 at 12:24 pm

that Hoos and Hokies can agree on, Coach K is a sore loser.

  21. Rick H. | March 4, 2013 at 12:42 am

I hate I missed this blog topic being out of town. K is such a whiner, as has been pointed out, the Dukie Dungeons and Dragons Crowd is about as rude as it gets, the entire “indoor stadium” is unsafe – people are way too close to the court, on one side, it is even hard to the players to put the ball in play, not to mention the baselines and how close they let people stick their feet out (photogs and whoever else) right under the basket.
    -
And, need I point out the unfortunate incident that occurred in Blacksburg, when the J.J. Reddick family couldn’t make it out, or to the locker room (what a bunch of spoiled parents) – wherever they felt they were entitled to go – after a Duke loss? I think J.J.’s dad described it as being ‘trapped.’ You know what – they shouldn’t have lost.
    -
The entitlement attitude that exists at Duke really, really gets old.
    -
This is a Hokie that is glad the Bratford Wives (a slight change to my previous thoughts!) got inconvenienced by our friends to the north east.
