Saturday: Senior night at Cassell

Erick Green scores 29 points as the Hokies beat Clemson 69-61. Berman’s game story is here.

My column should be posted soon. I’ll link it then (update: Here it is). You will be shocked to learn I wrote about Green.

HALFTIME: Hokies lead Clemson 36-25. Erick Green has 17 points, and he’s been very efficient about it: 6-for-7 from the field, 4-of-5 from 3-point range. He’s not forcing anything on his night.

Good effort so far from Robert Brown, who has 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. He’s living off runners in the lane — very high-percentage shots for him. He also hit a 3 in the corner just the before the break.

Crowd has filled in nicely. Just the upper corners of the arena lacking fans.

Cassell a little better than half full as senior night festivities begin, with some fans wearing green. Erick Green gets a nice ovation as he accepts his framed jersey.

Hokies are a 1-point underdog tonight.

SATURDAY MORNING: Tonight is Senior Night at Cassell Coliseum. Berman has an excellent feature on Erick Green, who will play his final home game against Clemson at 8 p.m. on CSN.

I’ll be posting some updates from the arena later today.

A few other morning nuggets:

-For today’s column on the UVa victory over Duke and the emergence of Akil Mitchell, click here.

-For a quick thought and some discussion on the court-storming issue, click here.

-For those of you who know Doughty, check this out: His son Matt drained the winning free throws with just seconds remaining last night to help North Cross edge Carlisle 34-33 and advance to the VIS Division III title game. Matty Ice! Apparently, he shares his father’s sunny outlook on all things sport: “Honestly, I thought I was going to miss both,” he said. Seriously, congrats to him and his pops, who got to watch from the stands as Andy covered the game.

I commented on Bermans site that based on Tech’s projected starting lineup tonight, their PPG avg and his, Tech will score 42 points tonight. Green 25 PPG, rest of starters 17 PPG.

The game itself is totally meaningless and all but one of the players and all of the coaches hardly deserve any notice. The season ticket holders and others who normally go to the games should fill the place and give Mr. Green the long and high decibel sendoff he has earned.

Congratulations Eric Green on a phenominal senior year. Certainly first team ACC honors are due, if not POY. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t have a supporting cast to help him out.

Good job Hokies! Way to end the home season. Eric, will never be able to say too much about you, great season. You are the POY irregardless of any vote.

A nice win, congrats to Erick Green – another signature performance.

There’s talent on this team. CJ Barksdale has really started to show these last few games, Van Zegren is going to be very good inside. If Eddie and Brown can get back on track and one of our recruits is a decent point guard maybe there’s some hope that next year we won’t be worse than this year. As good as Green was this year the ineffectiveness of his teammates more than made up for it.

Some many flaws on this team but there as plain as the nose on your face, so everyone knows where they need to work this summer.

I’m not so crazy as to think that this team could win the ACC tournament but I would sure like to see them at least win the first game.

Nice win, some other Hokies showed up other than EG tonight.

Would be interesting if VT somehow could defeat NCST in round 1 of tourney then gest UVA next -Challenging to beat the same team three times in a year, even if its VT…epecially if one team would still be a bubble team needing that Win

amac I know I ask for alot…………. do a little research on the H2OKies. Smaller sport but great things are happening!!

Thank you Eric Green.. It as just too bad that you had little to no help from the rest of the squad. Eric will be 1st team all ACC, but lack of Hokie wins prevents being POY. Larkin, Pumlet nor Joe Harris would be POY if they were the sole player on the Miami, Duke or Cav-A Hoo’s line-up.

    GO HOKIES!!!! GFB-VT`63

And UVA loses at BC in an half empty lifeless building. I just don’t get CBB.

  12. Perch | March 3, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Well done, Erick. Fun game to watch, good to see the other fellas get involved again. Robert, CJ, Cadarian, way to help Erick go out with a win at home. And then the ‘hoos lose….good weekend.

I believe I said the over-rated BooHoos would lose to BC…….I’m so tired of being right all the time!
