Timesland goes 4-for-4; hotel ants approve

ant

My roommate tonight, Internet promises.

Quite a day of basketball up here in Richmond, where Timesland teams went 4-for-4 on championship Saturday. Congrats to the Floyd County girls, Radford boys, Salem boys and Salem girls. You can see all our coverage here.

There are a lot of papers in the state that do great high school coverage — being a Maryland native, I was amazed at that when I first moved here — but I don’t think you can beat Robert Anderson and Ray Cox when it comes to prep passion and execution.

I’m in a hotel that was described on one review site as “not bad except for the ants.” Thirty-six bucks doesn’t go as far as it used to, apparently. Off to UVa tomorrow in what figures to be a must-win for the Cavs.

Aaron, if I had the choice of watching Virginia play basketball or hanging with the ants, i might just choose the ants; but, that`s just me.

AMc, you momentarily confused me. You twitpic’ed that shot of JPJ before a game, and for a moment, I thought it was a shot of halftime at a Hokie women’s game. Roughly the same actual attendance, though I’m sure Jim Weaver would be pleased at the ‘healthy’ turnout.

Definitely the ants. Unless UVA loses a heartbreaker, that’d be fun to attend.

With James Johnson’s crew staring at a 13-19 season, and the impending loss of over a third of their offense next season, I wonder if Jim Weaver still thinks he is ‘laughing last’…

AMc, feel free to use this Monday morning –

Why is it that baseball players get these types of injuries? Players that throw out their backs by sneezing, or that pull a groin muscle tying their shoes. Basically any odd injury possible, a baseball player will use it as a reason to hit the DL.

Hacksaw Reynolds played football with a broken leg. Michael Jordan played an NBA game with a 104 degree temperature. Ricky Rudd drove a NASCAR race with his daggone eyes taped open because they would have been swollen shut otherwise. He literally taped his eyes open! I always wondered what he did to keep them wet. Knowing Ricky, he probably squirted Gatorade in them.

But a baseball player will be out for a month because of a blister on his foot. Or… a cut pinkie. It’s something else, that’s for sure.

Thanks for digging that our crooked, the WaPo article about Seth. He is very good at what he does now. It is neat to see him starting to get more airtime.

I just hope he doesn’t go over the top like Vitale has done. I watched a replay of a game the other night, from about 10 or 12 years ago, that Vitale did. He actually used to be a good color commentator, before he put the theatrics into his performance.

Seth was good as a basketball coach, that got a raw deal from an AD that has outstayed his time. I didn’t know him as well as Karen, but they are two very good people. I told people the day he was fired he’d end up doing what he is doing now.

UVA one step closer to the big dance as they beat a tough Maryland team in OT. The HOOs will not be denied, they are for real. The ACC tourney is anyone’s for the taking. Duke is big time overrated.

The Terps must be worse than I thought. Celebrate that OT win Boohoos…..That should be your last until the NIT tourney when you play Morgan st in the 1st round at home.

Rick H, I saw an ESPN Classic game a couple of weeks ago that was about the time of Michael Jordan’s 50th birthday. It was an old UNC-Duke game from 1982. Dick Vitale was one of the announcers and I never could recognize the other guy, but he was one of the big names.

Anyway, there was no shouting from Dickie V, in fact he was very calm. He had some of the usual quips thrown in about hard working players, etc. but he had zero hyperbole. He actually was good. Unfortunately, at some point over the years he chose to become a deliberate caricature of himself.

I doubt Greenberg falls into that trap. The trap he might fall into is returning to coaching. A lot of those guys just can’t give it up. What he should do to avoid that is to remind himself about recruiting & the AAU influence on players. That should make anyone want to avoid being a head coach.

Greenberg is an excellent coach and an excellent tv analyst. You will hear from him again on the coaching circuit. VT made a terrible choice getting rid of him. But how about those HOOS? They are backkkkkkkkkk!

I think UVA needs at least 1 win in the ACC Tournament to feel better about their odds…taking those 2 bad losses to BC and FSU after Duke largely negates that win, and gives them a really bad track record against bad teams…despite a fair number of wins against good teams. They need at least 1 tournament win, because their first round game will either be against VT (whom they can’t afford to lose to), or NC State (whom they could really use another good win to boost their resume). They lost 4 of their last 7…2 to bad teams, and 2 to tournament teams. In their last 12 games, they lost 5 of them, which includes the bad loss to GT following a big win over NC State. They are a team very different at home vs on the road. 9 of their 10 losses were on the road (including neutral site against ODU), including all 7 of their ACC losses. They’ll be sweating it Sunday, especially if they flop their opener.

Good stats, OJ, those help clarify the picture quite a bit. I think that UVa must beat NC State or they have no shot at the NCAA. I think they might not have a shot anyway. Their losses really don’t support an NCAA team, especially the recent ones.
