“When was the last time you commented on a 12th place finisher?”
“Probably the 12th of Never,” I replied.
Hey, the guy has a point. I get it. We talk about it all the time here — the media saturation on certain athletes (Tiger, LeBron, Danica, Junior) often at the expense of others who might have performed better on a particular day. And here I was, feeding into that.
But the thing is, other than race-winner Jimmie Johnson, I don’t know that anybody had a better day yesterday than Patrick. My column here explains why.
Randy has a lead story on Johnson’s eighth Martinsville win here. Other than that, it was a pretty uneventful day by Martinsville standards (see the in-race blog for proof). Great crowd, though, on a beautiful spring afternoon.
HOW ABOUT THAT LUKE HANCOCK, HUH? The Hidden Valley alum came off the bench Saturday to score 20 points in Louisville’s win over Wichita State in the national semifinals. Yahoo! Sports has a very nice story on Hancock’s family here. The Cardinals will shoot for the title against Michigan at 9 tonight on WDBJ. Louisville is favored by 4.
-A reminder that the Virginia Tech football scrimmage originally scheduled for Saturday will be at 4:30 p.m. today. It’s free and open to the public. Enter through Gates 4 and 5 of Lane Stadium and sit on the west side.
-Masters week is here. We can dive into that more tomorrow. Given that a member of the blog crowd (Rick H.) nailed last year’s longshot winner (Bubba Watson), I’d like us to go on record with our picks again this year.
-Several afternoon baseball games on the tube today: Orioles-Red Sox (2 p.m., MASN), Brewers-Cubs (2:10 p.m., WGN) and Reds-Cardinals (4 p.m. MLB Network).
-Zesty English Premier League matchup on ESPN at 2:30 — Manchester City at Manchester United, a battle of the top two teams in the league standings.
NAME THAT TUNE
Take it for what it’s worth
My birth was a blessin’
Sent to live and die on Earth
As a lesson
We each have a star
All we have to do is find it
Once you do
Everyone who sees it will be blinded
They’ll tell you that you’re bright
And say you have a future
When you turn your back
Same cats’ll try to shoot ya…
