Running backs coach Shane Beamer talked with Richmond about head coaching job but is staying put at Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech running backs coach Shane Beamer talked with University of Richmond officials about the school’s head coaching job but will be staying put in Blacksburg.

“At the end of the day, I’ve got a great job at Virginia Tech,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of unfinished business in Blacksburg that I want to be a part of.”

Beamer, 34, who is nearing the end of his first season back at Virginia Tech, confirmed he talked with the Spiders about the position, which was held in interim by Wayne Lineburg this season after Latrell Scott resigned in August following his second DWI arrest.

CBS6 in Richmond is reporting that the school will announce Liberty’s Danny Rocco as the new coach this afternoon.

Beamer, the son of Hokies head coach Frank Beamer and a long snapper/receiver on the 1999 team that went to the national championship game, spent 10 years in the SEC as an assistant at Tennessee, Mississippi State and South Carolina.

He rejoined the Hokies last February in a reshuffling of the coaching staff, named running backs coach and associate head coach. The former recruiting coordinator at South Carolina has been a boost to Tech’s recruiting efforts as well.

Some people think I’m crazy, but I believe Shane will take a HC job somewhere for 5 years before FB hangs’em up and passes the job to Shane.

He isn’t ready for any HC job. Way too soon.

I still wonder why nobody responded at all when I mentioned this last week on this blog. Nobody in the ‘regular’ media had anything at all to say about it. No wonder newspapers are in trouble financially…

Hopefully Frank Beamer will not ‘get to choose’ his successor. That should be left up to the Athletic Director, and Beamer should stay out of it. Of course, that won’t happen, and VT will remain hidebound and remain on the same plateau where we’ve been located since 1999.

Of course, the scenario is well over a decade away, anyhow. Beamer will be as difficult to remove as Bobby Bowden and JoePa.

abdnva, hearing about rumors is one thing. Getting somebody to talk about it is another.

We “regular media” types do need to cite sources. And the Roanoke Times would prefer them to be named. It’s the disadvantage we have to message boards and sites that print any coaching rumor that they hear.

I don’t mind the plateau Virginia Tech is on. I remember all the years we were way down in the valley.

I think Rocco will be a good choice for the Spiders. He’s done a good job at Liberty.

A comparison of Shane Beamer’s current salary & bonus structure to that of the previous full time UofR coach would be something enlightening to consider. Beamer’s current salary & bonus is not that different from what he’d make as UofR head coach. The UofR job is a very nice one, though. If they come calling in 3-5 years, I imagine Shane would take it. That is, if his daddy hasn’t already promoted him to Offensive Coordinator by then.
