Virginia Tech adds Austin Peay to 2012 schedule

Virginia Tech finalized its 2012 non-conference football schedule Monday by announcing a matchup with Austin Peay at Lane Stadium in a one-year deal.

The date of the game has not yet been announced. It will be released when the ACC schedule comes out in late-January/early-February.

Follow me on Twitter.

Tech previously had games scheduled with East Carolina in 2012 and ’13, but they were moved back to 2016 and ’17 so the Hokies could open the 2013 season against Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff in Atlanta.

Virginia Tech has never played Austin Peay in football. The Governors, a team from the Football Championship Subdivision, went 3-8 this season, finishing second to last in the Ohio Valley Conference.

The rest of the Hokies’ non-conference schedule in 2012 includes Pittsburgh on the road (Sept. 15), Bowling Green at home (Sept. 22) and Cincinnati at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. (TBA).

Virginia Tech’s ACC schedule includes home games against Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia and Florida State and road games against Miami, North Carolina, Boston College and Clemson.

Another quality opponent for the Hokies.

    Prrof Reader,
It isn’t as simple as selecting LSU for that open date that was vacated by East Carolina. An opponent has to be found that also has an open date or is able to vacate the date in order to play you. The team has to also be willing to play you. Then the financial terms have to be agreed upon. Many teams simply will not play Virginia Tech because their Win/Loss ratio and bowl hopes could be negatively impacted if they lose to us. The FCS schools do not have to worry about that. It is all upside for them.

  3. Trevor | December 19, 2011 at 5:53 pm

Austin Peay, I can understand, but I would, never, ever overlook Bowling Green. That team is always dangerous. Cincinnati can beat VT. They just need to get their system going. Pittsburgh is not too bad, just need to decide which system to go with, and stick to it. Not a bad slate, actually.

AUSTIN PEAY IS OBVIOUSLY AN EXCELLENT WARM-UP GAME FOR THE LIKES OF CLEMSON, FLORIDA STATE, GEORGIA TECH, MIAMI, etc. (TIC)

Again, another 10 win season in the making. Go hokies!!

  6. steve | December 19, 2011 at 6:42 pm

Austin Peay … As they say on Monday night countdown , Cmon Man! These Tickets should be free or maybe $10

  7. proof reader | December 19, 2011 at 6:46 pm

David, Your not telling me anything I don’t already know. But give me a break…Austin Peay? There had to be another team out there looking to play..(1-AA or 1-A) that had more than 3 wins…lol… Your killing me Dave lol. Oh Dave if a team out there wants to enhance there strength of schedule, they WILL play Tech. Tech goes in the other direction with their OOCS. Tech did everything in there power to back there way into the BCS championship this year with that awful schedule, and they couldn’t even pull that off.

  8. Dan | December 19, 2011 at 6:48 pm

True, on short notice you pretty much have to take what you can get and remember Coach Beamer and his players don’t make the schedule, they play who is on them. As Trevor says, BG, Cincy and Pitt can be tough, and having to play both Miami and FSU could be killer. Having said that, I lived in West Tennessee for 15 years and trust me, Austin Peay doesn’t even qualify as “cupcake”, more like a petit four. ;)

  9. watchdog | December 19, 2011 at 6:53 pm

I didn’t know they had a football team, Division III?

  10. BJ | December 19, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Not a bad slate at all when you consider UVA, FSU, and Clemson should all be even stronger next year. UNC, GT, and Miami are never teams to take lightly……NCAA probation or not.

  11. TW | December 19, 2011 at 10:05 pm

And once again, more ammunition for national media to point out our “impressive” schedule.

  12. Al | December 19, 2011 at 10:15 pm

Austin Peay???!???? You’ve got to be friggin’ KIDDING me!!!! We’re expected to shell out over $2,000 a year, plus tickets (I’m a Golden Hokie), for AUSTIN friggin’ PEAY????? I hope that all Hokie Club members will join me in giving some serious thought to ticket renewal for the coming year. I don’t even want to hear about FSU and Miami in the same year. We are SUPPOSED to be playing a tough schedule, so that we will get better and maybe one day, contend for the national championship. A team like this is even WORSE than this year’s schedule. I hope to goodness someone from Tech who is in charge of scheduling will read this and CHANGE it!!! Otherwise, I recommend boycotting the game to express how disgusting the scheduling of a team of this low caliber really is.

  13. Techerman | December 19, 2011 at 11:32 pm

If Wilson goes, who do we have at tailback with any talent?

  14. SC | December 19, 2011 at 11:42 pm

I don’t know if you know it or not, but Austin Peay is coached by Marcus Gildersleeve, a former VT player who played for Beamer in the mid-90s.

  15. Anon-fan | December 20, 2011 at 6:29 am

Is proof reader’s name intentionally ironic? There vs their. Your vs you’re.

  16. Frank | December 20, 2011 at 7:12 am

That crowd will really get after you.

    Let’s go Hokies !!!

  17. Mike | December 20, 2011 at 8:05 am

Another pansy team for this “great” VT team. When are they actually going to start scheduling high caliber teams? They won’t because they in most probability fall flat on their faces as they always do. The BCS should have a bowl named the “Most my odds” type. VT would be there yearly. What a farce!

  18. Tony | December 20, 2011 at 8:13 am

Let’s not get carried away. I know everyone would like to see the OOC schedule filled up with BCS conference teams, but ALL of the teams in these conferences feast on a cupcake or two every year.
Just a comparison but in the next 5 years VT has ‘Bama, Pitt (2), Ohio State (2), and Wisconsin (2), Cinci, Bowling Green and ECU (4)on the downside they have Austin Peay, W&M, Akron, Furman, W. Kent., and W. Michigan, UVA has Penn St (2), UCLA(2), TCU, and on the down side Richmond (2), La. Tech, VMI, Ball St. Texas-El Paso, W&M, Kent State.

  19. Tony | December 20, 2011 at 8:16 am

^^^ Not to bad of a slate for either of these teams IMO. I think we would all like to see them play ALL great OOC teams but a couple is plenty enough to strengthen the schedule for a BCS bid. People can say what they want but VT has scheduled some very tough OOC games in the last 10 years (unfortunately they haven’t won that many of them). And please noone, don’t talk about Boise St. They played in the MWC and WAC for the last ten years. The only tough conference gams they have ever had was TCU and Utah..

  20. Tony | December 20, 2011 at 8:21 am

^^^correction above, UVA plays Texas-San Antonio

  21. David Aldridge | December 20, 2011 at 9:03 am

To Al – You must be hoping the Athletic Director is reading your comments and taking them into consideration. The AD usually plays a big role in scheduling and negotiating financial terms. And if you hope the AD is using the comments section of a newspaper article to help him make decisions, the Virginia Tech Athletics Department is in big trouble.

  22. David Aldridge | December 20, 2011 at 9:04 am

And how can you not be excited about playing a team who’s chant is, “LET’S GO PEAY!”

  23. Rick H. | December 20, 2011 at 9:25 am

Tech’s schedule, and every other ACC school, for that matter, will be perceived as weak if the ACC is weak, no matter who they play out of conference.

The out of conference schedule is more than respectable. Go find me a school in the SEC that isn’t doing one FCS team.

For the naysayers, finding a team with an open date that coincides with your open date isn’t all that easy. Sure, we all wanted to take the hot, easy chick to the prom, but she was was otherwise occupied, and had to take what we could get.

Hey, Al, nobody is making you be a Golden Hokie, so suck it up. Just don’t do it, if it means that much, one game against Austin Peay. I, for one, don’t think you have it in you to ‘go to the back of the line.’

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it now, having been a Tech fan when it wasn’t cool to be a Tech fan, Hokie fans are the most spoiled, fickle people in the world. Tech could go 12-0, beat teams #2-12, and people would bitch about that one game not being against #13 – that made the schedule weak, or the home/away combination was favorable.

  24. garry zettersten | December 20, 2011 at 10:03 am

This is likely a “payday” event for Austin-Peay. That I understand. But really, I am with everyone else on this. Its like JMU. If we win it is laughable. If we lose, its catastrophic.

I also get Beamer doing a favor for Gildersleeve but really …. Austin-Peay?

I hate to disrespect any team because of the effort their kids make. But really …… ?????

  25. john | December 20, 2011 at 10:04 am

WTF Jim Weaver ? You going to pay for my ticket to this cupcake ? Cmon dude, go work for Debbie’s snackcakes if this is the opponents we have to shell out money to go and see…

  26. Danny | December 20, 2011 at 10:18 am

My only comment that is if you are going to playing an FCS team (just about everybody else in the ACC has one), play one of the Virginia schools to help them out. I forgot, they lost to the last Virginia FCS team they played so they may not want to go there. UVA still played William and Mary again this past seaon after losing to them two years ago. Richmond, ODU, VMI, Hampton, Liberty, Norfolk State could all use the payday from Tech.

  27. Steve | December 20, 2011 at 10:41 am

Austin Peay? I think the football fans need to consider doing something more important with their money, like backing Alfred E. Newman for president. Maybe if Beamer and Weaver act quick enough they can replace FSU, Clemson and Miami on the schedule with Longwood, Hollins and Roanoke; you know just to guarantee the 10 wins and give Frank a chance to catch Joe Pa on the wins list.

  28. justafan | December 20, 2011 at 11:31 am

Okay guys, if you don’t want to buy the tickets, don’t buy the tickets. If you can schedule better teams on late notice, maybe you should apply for Weaver’s job when he retires. I’m tired of all the complaints.

  29. Trevor | December 20, 2011 at 11:40 am

All these raging about Austin Peay is pretty comical. Fans absolutely have no say so in the scheduling of opponents. In case anybody missed it, Tech will face Alabama in 2013, so there for the top caliber team.

It is mutually beneficial to both teams, if y’all stop and think about it for a moment. Tech gets a W and Austin Peay gets exposure and a handsome check for playing in Blacksburg. That’s a win-win, in my book.

If anybody think they can do better than Weaver, please feel free to fill an application when the AD position opens up, otherwise, kick back, and enjoy the football scene across the Atlantic Coast.

  30. Mike Eads | December 20, 2011 at 1:09 pm

Most of these comments are from fans that have no idea how college football operates. Every team from every conference schedules a cupcake or two early to get the team ready for conference play, it’s kind of like a scrimmage for a establishment who doesn’t have scrimmage games. Tech soft OOC schedule this year was to give our 1st year QB and RB time to get used to the speed of college football. If you go back and look at our past schedules and look ahead to our future schedules you’ll see they are anything but cake walks. Most of these schedules are made years in advance and nobody knows what’s going to happen in the NCAA from year to year so if you don’t like the games don’t go we’ll still sell out without you.

  31. Jim 60' | December 20, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Why not play Memphis University? They beat Austin Peay and would help the Tigers get back on their feet.

  32. David In Salem | December 20, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Are we going to Peay, or is there going to be Peay in Lane Stadium? I have to say, the only way to top this in crude humor is for us to play Morehead …or is it Moorehead? Is this who I would like dear old VT to play? No, it is not! Am I going to cry? Nope. Stop whining. If Tech goes undefeated in any year, it WILL be a BCS bowl winner at least. It will be NC at best. That is no matter who we play OOC. We just have to be undefeated. If we start going 11-0, 12-0, etc, and we are passed over for the NC game, THEN get upset about the schedule. Until then, what? Me worry??

  33. Tiger #1 | December 20, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I still would like someone to explain to me how a team gets beat not once, but twice and they are still ranked ahead of the team that beat them??

  34. Techerman | December 20, 2011 at 9:17 pm

Mike Eads- thanks for explaining the intricacies of college football scheduling. But how can you say this year’s soft OOC schedule was to give our 1st year QB and RB time to get used to the speed of college football when, as you correctly point out, the schedules are made years in advance and there’s no way to know when you’ll have a 1st year QB or RB or anything for that matter in any particular year!!! Think Mike, THINK!

  35. Im in DC | December 22, 2011 at 11:55 am

Hey Proff Reader, “there had to be another team out there…” Do your research and when you find one let us know. EVERY BCS team, even the LSUs and Bamas have a cupcake or 3 on the schedule. No problems with this add on.

  36. Im in DC | December 22, 2011 at 11:55 am
