The more I watch this game on the ole DVR the madder I get. This was a dominating performance we put on them. We held them to under 2 yds on first down all night. They pull off like 3 lucky plays of their own. We put them into position to win. We flat out got outcoached. To not secure the ball at key times tells me that we were not prepared again. Foster did his part. The offense moved the ball but to be inside the 50 6xs and get just 20 points is awful. I’m frustrated and want to punch someone right now. Can’t go to work or it will be bad.
The hilarious part is that the most optimistic outcome is this – Frank Beamer will ‘search his soul and that of the Hokie program’ and decide ‘new blood’ is needed in decision making. Thus, he will turn over responsibility for special teams to Shane Beamer, thus causing hosannas to be sung by the lemmings that the chosen one is ‘following in ole Fancy Gap’s footsteps…’ and further paving the way for Frank to strong arm the Ath Dept into Shane being made his successor.
That way, currently middle aged Hokie fans will be able to live their entire adult lives with a Beamer in charge of Hokie football, and to never, ever watch the program ascend any further than it resides now.
Yep. Michigan got lucky all right. Just like VT was luck in a few ACC games. But the only stat that counts is the final score. And that is Michigan 23, VT 20, I believe.
Can we just please start to fully admit that our overall coaching has become a major liability in these games? Also, our offensive line, as usual is not very good. When is this going to change?????? A good solid and well coached team would have put the foot on the gas and taken control of Michigan early in that game. Bud and the defense did their part and had we scored like we should have and not shot ourselves in the foot the game would have turned out completely different. Its always one thing or another that keeps us from winning these games. Bottom line is we either get blown out and look horrible in these games or we find ways to lose if the game is close. Different year same story. We’ve got some great players as we always do and I feel bad for them. I have now eliminated every expectation going forward that we can win any of these big bowl games.
Replay Official: Jim Fogltance, He’s been known for controversial replay officiating. How Fogltance ever got a job officiating again is dumb…after having been reprimanded and kicked off Pac-10 fields (but inexplicably was allowed to go to the replay booth) for both blatantly poor and biased calls.
SO…. Tom Wilson CEO of Allstate, host of the Sugar Bowl is a Michigan alumni and sitting in the box upstairs. And the refs in the box seemed to overturn(quickly) the best catch of the game by Danny Coale that was clearly inbounds and in possession from a line judge 5ft from the play, as well as the commentators and the tv viewers who for the majority agree, oh yeah as well as Michigan’s head coach admitting it at post game…..so, what’s the going rate for a SHADY instant replay booth referee up in that box?!?
I thought the two key plays were 1st and goal on the 4 and Wilson loses 22 yards and the 4th quarter fake (or whatever it was) punt. I the Hokies could have scored that TD early, it would have put a different light on it. Kudos to Danny Coale for trying to take the blame on the fake punt, but it should never have been an option. Kick it down field and let the defense stop them, they had been do that consitently.
One big player error and one big coaching error.
Not sure your scenario is correct abdnva. Everything I hear is Shane doesn’t want to follow immediately behind his dad. He wants to let someone else be the man who follows the legend and get himself some HC experience somewhere else.
forgot to add, he wants to be the guy who follows the guy who follows his dad.
Nothing against Shane, but I would welcome a completely new set of coaches when Frank eventually retires. If any of us are still around that long from now. I’ve never been a fan of the idea that some incestuous lineage of coaching only through the alma mater’s nurturing can ‘understand and respect the school tradition’. That doesn’t just apply to VT, it applies everywhere. As I said before, Urban Meyer seemed to do okay at Florida, and he was never a WR coach, etc. for Spurrier. He came in and built his program and succeeded.
Far too many Hokies fear anything other than what they see now, and think that no other coach (not named Beamer) who has ever lived or who will ever live could succeed in Blacksburg. I disagree…
Great QB coming back; $500. Great defense next year; $10,000. Beamer and the offensive coaches?? Worthless ! !
Beamer should fire himself as special teams coach
Right now I don’t care who follows Beamer the Elder as long as it is sooner rather than later.
Coach Beamer puts this program in the Top 10, year in and year out. It’s a little luck and a few key plays that makes you #1. As long as we keep at this level, it will happen again (as it did in 99). VT is lucky to have Coach Beamer. When he’s gone, VT will discover how it was over coached (not under coached) Other coaches will find it hard to repeat his success. All of you that want some great coach to walk in the door and save us, who did you have in mind? Do you think the best are beating on the door to move to Blacksburg? They are not. Appreciate Coach Beamer. You don’t win them all. If that catch was not overruled, we win.
Chokie fans need to stop whining about the replay. If Frankie had gone for the field goal and punted when he decided to go for it on 4th down and not make it, then they probably are not in overtime to start with. I’m not a Tech fan, but I will say they (players) were probably the best prepared that they have ever been for a game of that magnitude. Tha game was lost on bad coaching decisions.
That trophy case stays empty another year. How many years now?
Hard for me to believe that the snapper who caught the tipped pass (fake FG) wasn’t already downfield early and, therefore, an ineligible receiver.
I’ve been trying to join the chat but my comments do not appear? They are not offensive in any way. I’m a Michigan alumna who is feeling frustrated at not being able to join the chat!
Is replay official Jim Fogltance`s middle name Ina?
Tech loses again. Is Beamer the most overrated coach in college football, sure looks that way. The ACC is a lousy football conference and Tech never plays anyone to show how bad Beamer is ,until a bowl game and they sure showed it last night.
NCAA Football Rules and Interpretations, Rule 7, Artilce 6, IX – Airborne receiver A85 grasps a forward pass and in the process of going to the ground, first contacts the ground with his left foot as he falls to the ground inbounds. Immediately upon A85 hitting the ground, the ball comes loose and touches the ground. RULING: Incomplete pass. An
airborne receiver must maintain control of the ball while going to the
ground in the process of completing a catch.
I have seen high school and pee wee games that were officiated better. I wonder where they get some of these jerks from. I know they go looking for the first homeless person that knows nothing about football. I mean how do you overturn the touchdown in overtime when every replay showed it a catch and that roughing the kicker call. I mean maybe they forgot to put their glasses on.
I do wonder if the VT fake punt attempt was called in from the sidelines or happened on the field. There were many missteps in the game, but this one was dumb, avoidable, and fatal.
A huge thumbs up for VT defense. They were the winners of the Sugar Bowl.
Another 10 win season and another major bowl loss. So, what’s new for 2012? I have yet to view todays stats but am just puzzeled as to why the offensive “braintrust” did not continue to pass the ball? I can not recall a single time when Michigan was able to stop the receiving corps. Michigan’s defensive backs could not matchup with Tech’s receivers and that was demonstrated time and time again. I thought the name of the game was to exploit the other teams weakness! Maybe someone should suggest that the game does allow a team to throw the ball once it gets inside the red zone. Bud Foster as usual had a tremendous game plan and the defense played a heck of a game. Special teams and coaching decisions insofar as play calling lost this game. It’s time for Coach Beamer to get a reality check and accept ownership for this debacle. To add insult to energy during the upcoming season the many loyal fans are being shifted inside Lane and asked to pay higher ticket prices to support Tech athletics. Unfortunatley, the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior which is anxiety provoking in and of itself. “Well there is always next year” is a familiar quote that resonates throughout the Hokie community. The tradition continues…
all you beamer bashers should drop to your knees and give thanks that he came to vatech or you would still be in the same sorry state you were back in50s and 60s.next step is where you are if you think you going to make blacksburg,va. into baton rouge la. you have to be an awesome dreamer its not going to happen.
Once again Hokie fan’s are showing exactly what caliber of people they really are. They lose a game, and instead of blaming who is at fault, they take the easy road, and blame the officials. The Specials team screwed up, admit it (all except for Myer…damn fine job). It is time for Beamer and his regime to GO. I am not a Tech fan, but even I can see they are at a dead end. When you play schedules like they do, they can’t help but succeed. Maybe if they started playing more competitive teams, their true colors would show. Beamer was heard saying something to the tune of 19 years of bowl games speaks for itself. OK…how many of those bowl games have they one. They talk a big game, but wind up embarassing the school, the state, their fans (many which are band wagon fans), and them selves when they can’t put up. I get so irritated with the media around here, and the way they act like Virginia Tech is THE only football program and college in the state. Last time I checked, there is UVa, Radford, JMU, just to name a few. Mike London had a FANTASTIC year with his Cavaliers, but you never heard much about it. Even when he was named ACC Coach of the Year, it was a small news blip, but when Beamer has received the same title, it was a front page story. As I am fond of saying, when you compare UVa with Tech, it is a case of culture versus agriculture.
Great speach Mr. oVerraTed!!!! Spoken so truthfully… Coach London took a loosing team and made them a winning team in 2 YEARS!!! One ACC Coach in his 2nd YEAR!! But you don’t hear anything like that… The only thing you hear is how UVA Lost to Auburn… WELL HELLO??? Did all you Tech fans remember that Auburn was the DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS??? Who last year was UNDEFEATED??? I mean the only main player they lost was Cam Newton… And we still put up 24 points against them…. Thats more than you Hokies put up against Michgan…. Its about time UVA should start getting some respect in the state and around this area…(Roanoke Times)!!!! All you can print is how Tech as a trophy case for a National Championship… HELLO??? UVA has several we can let you borrow to put in there until you get one!!!
Yes I know all you Hokie fans will say… (It’s not in football) Well there are more sports other than football…
Oh by the way…. Why not print something on the front page about how UVA’s Mens Basketball team is ranked, is 13-1 and has won 11 straight games… This is why I cancelled my Roanoke Times Subscription.. Tired of reading about how the Hokies get screwed, and can’t win the big ones, and how they don’t get a fair shake… Its about time to promote some of the other schools in the state that accomplish alot…..
OVer ra Ted,
It is not a lack of character to call a thing that which it is. The poor officiating caused us to lose the game in OT. That being said, special teams play was horrible. Not Myer, but other aspects of it. David Wilson made a horrible decision in running back our way as if to score for Michigan. Danny’s fake punt fiasco was Beamer’s. I am proud of our boys. Yes, had VT not made a couple of crappy calls, the officials would have been less of a factor. As it stands, they were a critical factor. We played well enough to beat Michigan, not well enough to beat both Michigan and the officials. Not only did they make wrong calls against VT. They missed calls against Michigan
Another could of, should of, would of situations. The only ones that can fix the problems I have read are the ones in that lockerroom. Tougher mentality, aggressiveness,, just getting it done will happen when they play a schedule that is tuff on a weekly bases. This should be the starting point in this process. Heck with bragging on the 10 win seasons, it will come. Yes they could of won, but to many factors for this to happen. Alot of teams feel the same way when they play at lane stadium with the officials. Most resent , ask North Carolina. . Get over the finger pointing. It did not go the hokie nations way. 2-5 ACC record. Be pulling for them Clemson Tigers tonight. The ACC needs help in more ways than 1.
Karen if we wanted to read your posts we would go on the BIGBLUE.com and read them…Here we dont care. UVAFAN to compare scoring on the Auburn defense to the screwjob that happened last night is crazy. UVA had a great season in their minds until we went up there and took you clowns to the woodshed. If you won your game talk trash. You lost. So pat London on the tooshie and give him a fat contract for 20 yrs and continue to take your beatings every year from us. If we would have played Auburn we would have been prepared for the crazy trick plays you guys gave up td after td on. Your team is in no way in the class of us. Lets see when was the last time you where in a BCS game?…..NEVER!!!! Take your comments to the Daily Progress and post your views there. We went down there played tough defense and got some bad breaks. A pass we should have intercepted, a fumble that a bouncing ball to a lineman downfield catches. And a bad call here anf there. We outplayed them and thats a fact. The numbers dont lie.
Beamer Best All time.
About time to channe that screen name. After you do, realize that it doesn’t matter if you go to a BCS game unless you win it. Better not to go at all if you just lose year after year after year. Tech is becoming a one trick pony and that trick is getting old.
OK, while I admire the enthusiasm of the VT fans, every year, every year the same thing. They start highly ranked, then lose, then climb back up and then lose the bowl game. sigh……
Hey #1 Tiger, first, learn to spell, second, take your BS blog somewhere else, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The officials and a bad bounce lost this game. You’re an idiot, have continually been an idiot and always I’ll be, you guessed it, an idiot. It’s a VT blog, go find your LSU blog, I’m sure you’re a life long LSU fan, NOT. You’re another bandwagon weenie who seeks joy in watching VT lose. Next year you’ll assume a new name and be a “Bama” fan. We don’t care where you go, just go away.
Painful. (to watch)
Predictable. (play calling on offense)
Accountable. (Hokie coaches – looked like preseason game)
Painful. (to think about again)
The defense played outstanding- probably the best effort I’ve seen from a Tech defense. I was really worried about Denard Robinson but he didn’t do squat. They could’ve won the game 42-0. Michigan was lucky that Tech gave the game away time after time. The Big Ten channel is celebrating the win as an example of the resurgence of the Michigan and the Big 10 but they were unbelievably lucky to win. The Hokies kicked Michigan’s butt bigtime in every way except the one that counts- the score.
Logan Thomas was outstanding and the downfield blocking of Boykin and Coles was consistently the best by WR’s that I’ve ever seen.
I hate to say it but it was not the officiating that lost the game for the Hokies. Ex:
1. lack of play action on first down,
2. not throwing to Boykin, Coles and the WR’s downfield more,
3. not making clean catches – 2 potential INT’s and Coales OT drop (although he made a fantastic effort,)
4. turnover on downs deep in Michigan territory by calling two QB sneaks in a row,
5. the fake field goal fiasco,
6. David Wilson’s loss of 30 yards on a running play,
7. fumble on KO(not securing the ball,)
8. playing for the tie at the end of regulation with a 3rd string kicker (should’ve learn a lesson from the GA-MSU and Stanford-OSU games)….
Based on the above, I’m surprised it was as close as it was and that Tech had a chance to win.
Having said all this, I’m not too upset with the loss. Heck, they’ll get their check. I hope the coaches (offensive and special teams) learn something from the autopsy on this game. I do feel good about the team next year if they find some offensive linemen.
Hey #1 UVA fan, you need to learn how to spell too, it’s losing, not loOsing. You, like #1 Tiger fan are an idiot and can take your posts somewhere, like maybe a UVA site. You are an idiot because you are comparing last years Auburn team to this years Auburn team. The ’11 team is a shadow of the ’10 natl champ. And UVAs lackluster performance just showed its still eons away from being a threat to anyone onn the NATL level.
VTs loss to Michigan was a stark contrast to their recent failures in “big” games. They pushed around Big 10 bad boys Michigan. VT was more physical, faster, but unfortunately, more careless on special teams. But in spite of that, more thane obvious bad call, agreed poor calls by NEUTRAL folks, gave Michigan the win. VT didn’t lose this one, they had it taken from them.
Lastly, I happy you canceled your subscription and I doubt anyone really cares. I just renewed my subscription all the way up here in DC. That way I get the best reporting about the best football team this side of Alabama and Louisianna!
Go Hokies!!
Lastly, all you haters stop whining about the VT schedule. Everybody, eve tthe SEC super teams schedule soft no conference competition. In fact, Auburn, last years undefeated natl champ needed a last second miracle to beat mighty Utah State… Kinda makes UVA resounding loss to a substandard Auburn sting a bit more doesn’t it? It’s not VTs fault the ACC continues to be down, we have to play the conference schedule you know. Check your facts and check VTs upcoming schedules, next year is a bump up but the following year we open with Alabama, and e following 4 years we have home and home series with Ohio State and Wisconsin. Will that shut you whining VT haters, loser UVa lovers up once and for all? Thanks for watching us physically hammer Michigan, I chose to avoid Auburn rolling you… Just like we did… AGAIN… What was it, 38-0…?
As a former player and long time fan of Michigan football, seen a few games in my day, the Va Tech team I saw last night can play against any team in any conference in America. I was expecting UM to win this game b 3 TDs judging by the way we lit up 2 pretty good defenses in Nebraska and Ohio State. We could do diddly last night and save 2 prayers (thanks Hemingway) we don’t with at game. That defense Tech had out there would have stopped most everyone and at minimum slowed down LSU, Bama, Ok St, you know, the big boys. Your QB is a stud, you have solid receivers, some coming back. If Wilson returns, AND, you play with the passion you played this game with you will make a run next year.
Mad respect for the Hokies!
Go Blue!
UVA fan, are you actually comparing the ’11 Auburn team with the ’10 Auburn team? Do your homework, this years team was a shadow of last years with so many players moving on. This years edition got by mighty Utah State by 4 points on a last second TD. Kinda makes your getting thumped easily by them a bit more humiliating huh?
And to all you who complain about VTs scheduling. EVERYBODY schedules some soft non conference games. Even the SEC heavy weights. With that understanding, it’s not VTs fault the ACC continues to be down (which should also make Mike London’s “super job” less super if you acknowledge the ACC is down… Given your arguments VTs schedule is soft… Or is this too deep for you?). Do just a little research, next year VT makes a marked upgrade in its nonconference schedule to go with FSU, MIA, and Clemson. After that it’s 4 years of home and home series with Ohio State and Wisconsin. Will that do I for you?
Go Hokies, congrats on another great year! Go Hoos, you will never compete aour level.
Well it really makes me feel a lot better watching WVU score more points in a 3 minute span against Clemson than Tech scored against them in 2 games….Again, congrats to Beamer and the staff for their great game planning and preparation for the Clemson games this year. I’m really looking forward to more of the same next year and beyond.
Va tech. Players play a great game. The reason we lost the sugar bowl is because of coaching staff. Only coach that did their job was Bud Foster. I’ve been a hokie fan all my life and one common problem we have and need a change is Frank Beamer needs to go. Frank Beamer and offensive coaches calling stupid plays and going away from the plays that got us down the field. This way we can’t win a big game. Frank Beamer needs to retire now and we start fresh next season.
Frank Beamer’s time has come and gone. Not sure how you get him out, but mark my word……… As long as Frank Beamer is around, we will not win the big games! I’m a little sick of it. Yea, we usually play good games, but in the end, we have fewer points than the top rated teams. Maybe Tech never gets to the top, but it never will happen with Frank Beamer being the leader. Our players and fans deserve better. This is not a personal attack on Beamer. He’s a nice guy, just not a top notch coach.
A few observations/opinions
The Hokies win in what has become a weak conference (ACC). It used to be better, when FSU was a top team, but 2 – 13 as a conference in BCS games tells a tale.
Frank Beamer has been a great coach for Va Tech. Va Tech was not a good program before he arrived. It will be hard for it to maintain its status after Beamer leaves.
Va Tech could have won that game in regulation. It was largely poor special teams play that cost you the game.
There were some “interesting” calls, and most of them seemed to go against you. Still could have won the game in regulation.
Wait until next year.
Hey DC…seems like you get great pleasure calling people “idiots”. Maybe you should go back and proof read your posts, because I counted multiple errors in each of them. I can now see why you are so proud of your “Chokies”, becuase with your demonstrated ignorance, it perfectly clear you went to Tech. Maybe you should have looked at a better school, like UVA, then maybe you could have learned how to spell. Oh, by the way, UVa ranks third in the Kiplinger’s list of the Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges. So I guess it is YOU (Va. Tech) that will never compete at OUR level. Go away, you bother me!
The Michigan coach did not admit it after the game. All he stated was that he didn’t believe it was going to be over turned from where he was at.
Many of you fellow hokies make us look stupid by crying about the refs. The ball clearly hit the ground, what are you, nuts???? This has been the case all season long in about every end zone touchdown review. Where have you been? They still could have scored anyway on their possession so play the what if game cause Im not going to.
Place blame where it belongs on our lack of execution when it mattered and playing to not lose the game instead of playing to win.
hokiefan345: We are not nuts – yes the ball did clearly hit the ground – but that is OK – nothing says ball can’t hit the ground after it’s already been possessed. Agree some blame resides on poor execution and playing not to lose, but in the end if the ref makes the right call, we executed well enough to at least see if MI could put up another 7 vs 3.
Over rated– could not agree with you more. Also remember, you can dress up a ____, but you can’t take away its stink. Ignorant, arragant all wrapped in one. Go DC, Go. Proud to be a hokie.
oVer raTed,
“As I am fond of saying, when you compare UVa with Tech, it is a case of culture versus agriculture.”
I would like to know, what precisely does this have to do with football? This sounds vaguely like a dig at a great university. This article was on football, specifically Virginia Tech football. If you’re not a fan, that’s fine, feel free to ignore the articles about VT and focus on the football program of your choice.
I am so sick of hearing UVa students/alumni/fans/etc using that argument against VT. You all wonder why we call you pretentious…well that may be why. VT offers a ton of great academic programs, and I, for one, am happy to say that we DO have a great agriculture program. Not to mention the fact that VT hosts a variety of very diverse students, who help to bond people of different cultures, and (perhaps?) broaden the horizons and culture of everyone else around them.
So, go on saying that we are “agricultured” over “cultured”, but all that does it make you seem snotty, and I’d rather be agricultured than snotty any day.
Hokie love,
a student tired of that old argument
Hokie love, just ignore them. Tigers #1 has been saying stupid irrelevant things all season and overrated is just a hating angry a-hole. Notice they couldn’t argue my points about the as state of UVA football, how it was a joke UVA fans were comparing this years Auburn teams with last years in a vain attempt to make themselves feel better about a substandard college football program. They’re both idiots, clearly.
Is everything spelled correctly overrated? I went ahead and corrected the computer this time bud. Big difference in that and the ridiculous mistakes I was referring to… Loser vs. looser, they’re vs. there. Come on up to DC if you want a spelling lesson, in any event I’m a regular on here and won’t be going away as I could give a rat’s hind end if I bother you or not. I also could give a rats hind end what kiplinger has to say about UVA. This is a VT football blog, DO YOU UNDERSTAND??!! Go on over to UVAs and brag about your big 8 win season and finally beating VT…. Oh no, wait, 38-0, wow… UVA really still stinks huh? Hahahahahahahahahahaha GO HOKIES!
Over rated — YOU go away, YOU bother us! this is a virginia tech article. and last i checked, vt’s architecture and engineering programs are ranked higher than UVA’s…so how about YOU compete on THAT level?
