Reports: WR Joshua Stanford commits to Hokies (UPDATE: Punter A.J. Hughes will get chance as walk-on)

Virginia Tech added to its 2012 recruiting class Sunday with a commitment from Lithonia, Ga., wide receiver Joshua Stanford, according to multiple reports.

FOX Sports/Scout recruiting analyst Chad Simmons tweeted the news first this morning.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Stanford began getting attention late in the recruiting process after catching 56 passes for 1,018 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior at Martin Luther King High outside of Atlanta.

He visited Middle Tennessee two weeks ago and Arkansas State last week before coming to Blacksburg and committing this weekend.

Stanford is a three-star recruit on Rivals and a two-star by Scout, which ranks him as the No. 193 receiver nationally. The Hokies had a spot for a wide receiver after Robert Lockhart of Boca Raton, Fla., changed his commitment from Virginia Tech to Miami earlier this month.

The Hokies have 27 commitments for 2012 (two are already enrolled). Stanford is the third wide receiver in the class, joining Mark Irick (St. Matthews, S.C) and Thomas Smith (Williamsburg).

Stanford’s high school teammate, fellow receiver Blake Tibbs, is a three-star recruit who committed to Georgia in September.

National Signing Day is Feb. 1.

UPDATE, 3:43 p.m.: Punter A.J. Hughes told a TV station in his hometown of Terre Haute, Ind., that he’ll get a chance as a preferred walk-on at Virginia Tech.

Hughes is the No. 11-ranked punter nationally by the website Kohl’s kicking, which specializes in rankings for kickers, punters and long snappers. Here’s what the site said about the 6-foot-1, 180-pounder:

“Explosive punter, lefty is able to hit consistent spirals, needs some technical refinement, drives the ball extremely well, drop could become more consistent, showed great talent at National Scholarship Camp in 2011.”

Hughes told Rivals last week that he had interest from Indiana State, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Indiana and Ball State.

  1. Stanford is a reach and tells me Tech knows Caleb is going to WVU or OSU. Why do they feel like they have to use the scholarship instead of saving for OL that they need so badly, even if it is next year? This is a Kevin Assante / Dmitiri Knowles type signing I don’t understand. Having said that, still a pretty good class but loading up on positions where they are already in good shape. Kirven will go to TN or Bama and Ekanem will go to ND and they will sign another player or two that they beat Middle TN and Lousiana Monroe for.

  2. @ Rick,

Knowles will play a significant role for this team starting next season. Stanford has decent size, good speed, and great hands, dont bench the kid before you ever see him play.
