Signee profile: Nashville, Tenn., DE Woody Baron

Virginia Tech’s latest signee is a familiar name for Hokies fans. Defensive end Woody Baron, the nephew of former Tech defensive lineman Jim Baron, sent in his letter of intent.

The 6-foot-3, 252-pounder from Brentwood Academy in Nashville, Tenn., is a three-star prospect by all the major recruiting sites. He committed during a Virginia Tech camp last summer.

Baron sprained his MCL last year and missed most of his senior season. As a junior, he made 56 tackles and 17 sacks and was a Mr. Football Lineman finalist in his division. He had a team-high eight sacks and 15 tackles for a loss in 2011.

He began living just outside of Nashville with his uncle three years ago. The elder Baron lettered at Tech in 1994 and ‘95, finishing with 93 career tackles and seven sacks. Jim played in the NFL and Arena League until 2008, most notably for the Nashville Kats.
