Virginia Tech remembers shooting victims five years later

It’s a somber day at Virginia Tech on the fifth anniversary of the April 16 shootings, although it’s a reminder of the resiliency of the school and town as they push forward but never forget such an unspeakable tragedy.

The school will hold a commemoration and candlelight vigil in front of the April 16 Memorial at 7:30 p.m. The event has drawn more than 10,000 people each year. Here’s a full schedule of events for the Day of Remembrance.

The football team altered its usual spring practice schedule to take today off. It’ll be back on the field tomorrow, but the tragedy isn’t far from the Hokies’ minds. Here’s a picture defensive end James Gayle tweeted last night, honoring the 32 victims.

God Bless the students, faculty, and all the families on this terrible event.

I remember that day. I was at break when I saw there was a breaking news that two people died in a shooting. By lunch time, the number was up to 17. I had the sickening feeling that it couldn’t happen, not here, and it did. It kind of changed perspective that the mountains didn’t insulate us from that kind of tragedy.

I hope the families are recovering; I know it have never been the same for them.
