Where are the Hokies projected to go in the NFL Draft?

The first round of the NFL Draft takes place tonight. As such, I wrote a draft preview for today’s paper.

Obviously, the big news from yesterday is word coming out that Jayron Hosley tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine, a relatively minor offense in the grander scheme but one that, given the timing, showed poor judgment, something pro teams probably consider a bigger deal than the drug use itself. For more on that, click on the story.

Now, as for the draft itself, the NFL has stretched it across three days. Here’s the schedule. Everything takes place in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall and looks like it’s televised on ESPN and the NFL Network.

  • Round 1: Thursday, April 26 (8 p.m. ET)
  • Rounds 2-3: Friday, April 27 (7 p.m. ET)
  • Rounds 4-7: Saturday, April 28 (noon ET)

Where are the former Hokies projected to go? It’s all over the map. Here’s a sampling of what I found that was out there (keep in mind that pretty much all of these were published before Hosley’s drug test went public). There were also plenty of one-round mocks that didn’t have any Tech guys listed. These are ones that did:

Todd McShay of ESPN/Scouts Inc. (7-round mock — Insider)

  • David Wilson — Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2nd round (36th overall)
  • Hosley — Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 3rd round (68th overall)
  • Danny Coale — Baltimore Ravens, 4th round (130th overall)
Chad Reuter of NFL.com (7-round mock)
  • Wilson — Cincinnati Bengals, 2nd round (53rd overall)
  • Hosley — Minnesota Vikings, 3rd round (66th overall)
Rob Rang of CBS Sports (2-round mock)
  • Hosley — San Diego Chargers, 2nd round (49th overall)
  • Wilson — Denver Broncos, 2nd round (57th, overall)
Dane Brugler of CBS Sports (2-round mock)
  • Hosley — Kansas City Chiefs, 2nd round (44th overall)
  • Wilson — Cincinnati Bengals,2nd round (53rd overall)
Pat Kirwan of CBS Sports (2-round mock)
  • Wilson — St. Louis Rams, 2nd round (39th overall)
  • Hosley — Tennessee Titans, 2nd round (52nd overall)
Clark Judge of CBS Sports (1-round mock)
  • Wilson — New York Giants, 1st round (32nd overall)
Taylor Jones of Fox Sports (2-round mock)
  • Wilson — Green Bay Packers, 2nd round (59th overall)
Peter Schrager of Fox Sports (7-round mock)
  • Hosley — New York Giants, 2nd round (63rd overall)
  • Wilson — Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 3rd round (68th overall)
  • Jaymes Brooks – Cincinnati Bengals, 5th round (156th overall)
Jarrett Bell of USA Today (1-round mock)
  • Wilson — San Francisco 49ers, 1st round (30th overall)
Sporting News (7-round mock on two pages)
  • Hosley — New England Patriots, 2nd round (48th overall)
  • Wilson — Philadelphia Eagles, 2nd round (51st overall)

So the USA Today must really like David Wilson enough to think he can be a first round pick both as a running back and an outfielder in the same year. Id think that would have to be a first.

Wilson will be 3rd round, Coale second round. Boykin third round and Hosely 4th Round.

It seems that Coale is the perpetual underdog. I can not fathom how he, of all people would go undrafted. Disciplined, clutch, deceptively fast, good hands and a team player; someone is going to see the value that this kid brings to their organization.

I think it is Boykin who is the underdog. It’s a shame. Between Coale and Boykin, they both had the most productive careers at Tech.

I would not be surprised if Hosley don’t get drafted at all.

Andy, do you think there could be another Christian Ponder surprise in the first round? He came out of nowhere to be selected 12th in the 1st round.

I’m betting Coale will continue as an under appreciated, over performing player. He’ll likely have the more successful overall career. I hope so anyway.

    Carl’s been smoking with Hosley…

They must have pretty good stuff too.

RBs are seriously undervalued these days because it is a pass happy league.

Wilson 2nd round, Hosley 4th round (the test costs him), Coale 5th round and Boykin signs a free agent contract the day after.

Wilson makes his team and sees limited duty (Giants are a perfect fit as are the Bucs).

Hosley makes the team but mostly as a return man.

Coale is the surprise of camp and becomes the 3rd Wideout.

Boykin’s success depends entirely on who gets him. Would not be surprised to see him get cut and then be picked up as a free agent and make the second team that gets him.

I am more interested to see if any of our big uglies get a chance.

The draft is alkl about measurables and Coale and Boykin are about heart.

Remember, Nick Sorenson went undrafted and played, what, a decade in the NFL? Coale will have a career in the NFL, just as Cody Grimm has a career in the NFL.

As for other Hokies? I’d be surprised if anyone other than Wilson & Coale stuck with rosters this season.

Clark Judge of CBS Sports had it right! Congrats to David Wilson! My Cowboys will have their hands full trying to stop him twice a year.
