Virginia Tech picked by media to win the Coastal; Logan Thomas second in Player of the Year voting

Virginia Tech is the media’s choice to win the Coastal Division by a large margin, although the majority of writers picked Florida State to win the ACC.

The Seminoles, who have not won a league title since 2005, are the consensus choice to win the conference, earning 60 ACC championship votes. The Hokies were second with 18.

The media has picked those two teams to play in the championship game in four straight years. They have met in it once in that time, with the Hokies prevailing in 2010.

The Hokies got 83 first-place votes in the Coastal Division, being the media’s choice to win the league for the sixth straight season. Virginia Tech has won the division five of the seven years since the ACC went to a two-division setup.

Georgia Tech was second in the division with 421 points and 10 first-place votes, followed by North Carolina (two first-place votes), Virginia, Miami and Duke.

Florida State earned 72 first-place votes to be the Atlantic Division favorite with 543 points. Clemson (17 first-place votes) was next, followed by N.C. State (5 first-place votes), Wake Forest, Boston College and Maryland.

Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas finished second in the preseason player of the year voting to Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins. Watkins got 25 votes, while Thomas got 21. Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel was third with 19 votes, followed by Tajh Boyd with 18.

Hokies cornerback Kyle Fuller was tied for seventh in the voting, one of four players who received one vote.

Florida State? Again? I guess the media didn’t learn their lesson. Last year, Florida State was the overwhelming favorite, but then they didn’t go to the title game, let alone win their division.

Logan Thomas for ACC player of the year. He might even be good enough to play on Sunday after he leaves VT. I am not EVEN a Hokies fan, but this guy is good.

Logan best win the ACC Player of the Year because he won’t get a second chance at the award because (and I don’t care what he said in yesterdays paper) he will opt out of his final year for the NFL.
