Tyler, Journell earn ACC player of the week honors

Two Hokies earned ACC player of the week honors after Monday night’s 20-17 overtime win against Georgia Tech. Jack Tyler was named linebacker of the week, while Cody Journell was the league’s specialist of the week.

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Tyler, who is from Oakton, had a career-high 17 tackles against the Yellow Jackets, topping his previous high of 12 last year against Georgia Tech. Seven were solo stops. It was the most tackles in a game by a Hokies defender since rover Michael Crawford had 18 against Texas A&M in 2003.

Journell, who was reinstated to the team over the summer after his arrest on a breaking and entering charge last December, redeemed himself after missing a 38-yarder in the fourth quarter.

His 41-yard field goal as the clock expired in regulation tied the game at 17 and forced overtime. The former Giles High standout from Ripplemead kicked his first-ever game-ending field goal in the extra session, making a 17-yarder to give the Hokies the victory.

Here’s a link to all of the ACC’s players of the week.

Yes, well deserved for Tyler last night, he was all over the field like a poor man’s Luke Keuchly. Makes me wonder if he will stick at the position or if he will be moved when Tariq Edwards gets back?

No argument with either but why not Fuller on D?

  3. Trevor | September 4, 2012 at 2:20 pm

That Tyler kid is really good. The defense hadn’t had a sideline to sideline tackling machine since Cody Grimm moved on. I think he’s going to be beastly as the season goes on.

  4. HokieAl | September 4, 2012 at 2:46 pm

Agreed. Tyler was putting the hurt on last night. The kid has the potential to be something special.

Congratulations to both Jack and Cody. Well deserved honors.

Good perseverance by the Hokies. Vt seemed to do well when Thomas ran the ball early on in the game. In the third quarter we looked too predictable and we did not execute well. Logan Thomas needs to learn how to pump fake. One quick pump fake on a couple of those throws and it could have easily been 6 points. I think the pump fake is way under used (or under taught). Tyler had a great game and looked to have had a referee in his way when try to guard on that one touchdown pass. Corey Fuller will be a go-to receiver by the seasons end.

ward you must be an “old tymer” :>) I concur. Where did the pump fake go? It is the greatest tool in the passing game. ‘cept for 9 sec 100 meter speed.

What are we teaching our kids? It is alright to break the law and then an individual is made into a hero. Does anybody have a problem with this or what? Got to see him on the 6 o’clock news. Mannnnnnnnnnnnn!

Andy, can you shed some light on the status of Benedict playing time? As I understand it Via played the entire game (and did a fine job) but I thought there was going to be a rotation? Let me know whatever you got on this. Thanks, “L”

this is a reply to the blogger who thinks journell is a bad example for kids. first off, he is still a kid basically. but last nite he became more of a man. can u imagine what was going through his mind waiting to kick the end of regulation game saver? after the first miss already. thinking of people like you and your hatred towards him over a pizza box? well, he drilled it under pressure. big pressure. a miss would have sent him to the bench and more embarrasment for his family. that to me is the definition of a winner. the blogger in question is called “if truth be told”. well- if truth be told that you are in that situation having to make that kick- odds are you would pee your pants and cry for your mamma. and miss.

Virginia Tech deserved to win the game. The defense did a fine job last night.
This team will get better as the season moves along.
    Let’s go Hokies !!!

  12. ward | September 4, 2012 at 11:22 pm

Did Ronny Van Dyke play at all against Georgia Tech?

  13. Doug | September 5, 2012 at 12:06 am

@If Truth Be Told: Journell broke the law, was convicted and paid the price.
How long would you want him to keep on paying that price? Now he is trying to get his life together by staying out of trouble, going to college and doing things the right way. We should all wish him well. Isn’t that the American way?

  14. Jeffrey | September 5, 2012 at 7:55 am

    Giles,

Your post is full of fail. There are plenty of kids that have not screwed up one bit that deserve Journell’s spot over him. Journell is where he is at because he is talented. It’s a shame that in today’s world we value a person’s talents over their character.

  15. chess | September 5, 2012 at 8:00 am

another great game from the defense. But must have better play calling from the offense, I believe time will show that the GT defense is not that good.
We still need a change in the offense.

  16. George | September 5, 2012 at 9:13 am

Dear Truth Be Told. It must be nice to be so almighty you have never made a mistake and so forgiving you do not believe in second chances – or you must be a Hoo. Either way, you need a different outlook on life!

  17. Brian | September 5, 2012 at 9:14 am

Not saying I approve of Cody’s actions or his reinstatement to the team, but I can easily imagine how that game ends without him on the team… and it’s not with a W.

As for Tyler, great game against the run. He was burned in pass coverage a few times including the GT final TD. I take him for what he is, solid against the run and needing improvement in coverage. Tariq Edwards is an upgrade as far as an all-around linebacker is concerned.

Jeffrey, Journell went through the court process and served his punishment. Once that is done, it’s done. You don’t keep punishing people after they have fulfilled their given punishment. That’s not how it works. Rules have been in place long before Journell was a Hokie to handle players who get in trouble off the field, and how to decide whether or not to bring them back to the team. The rules were not changed for Journell. There’s no need to keep pretending that they were. There’s also no need to pretend like these things only happen in Blacksburg.

As far as others “deserving” the spot… how do you deserve a spot on a football team as a kicker? How does this entitlement come to be? Part of deserving that spot means being a better kicker than Journell and earning the spot as the starter, right? Just being a good person doesn’t mean you deserve to be a kicker. I’ve never been arrested, does that mean that I “deserve” to be the kicker more than Journell? I don’t think so. Apparently, there isn’t a person on the Hokies’ roster that is currently a better kicker. So until then, the most deserving player is already in the starting kicker’s spot.

  19. OMG! | September 5, 2012 at 12:47 pm

For pete’s sake! Journell is a FELON! Whether he’s “done his time” or not doesn’t matter! If it didn’t matter, why would the question still be on a job application? I’ve made mistakes in my lifetime, and from my experience, they tend to follow you for a while. Journell is occupying a position that could be better filled by someone deserving of a chance – whether they would’ve won the game or not. Is winning with criminals better than possibly winning with a more deserving individual?

The whole situation makes Giles, VT, and the entire NRV look like a bunch of football crazy loons.

Here’s to hoping Journell skips his senior year for a chance at the NFL where he can be a real role model for the future athletes of America.

  20. Jeffrey | September 5, 2012 at 12:49 pm

    hokie24,

I know these kinds of incidents happen at school all over the country, but what kind of precendent does it set? Basically you’re saying that if you have talents, it is ok to get in trouble, because your talents will make sure you come out clean? I mean really. Just because Ohio State lets their players get by with stuff doesn’t mean VT or UVa or anyone else should. It’s time to set an example.

  21. hokie24 | September 5, 2012 at 1:24 pm

OMG!, Journell is not a felon. He was not convicted of a felony.

  22. hokie24 | September 5, 2012 at 1:29 pm

And also OMG!, what a sad world we’d be in if “whether he’s done his time or not doesn’t matter!”

So if anyone ever does anything bad, they should continue to be continuously punished, never ending, from now on? Get real.

  23. hokie24 | September 5, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    Jeffrey,

The precendent wasn’t set with Journell. It wasn’t set at VT. It doesn’t make it right, but at the end of the day, these are kids we’re talking about. If his crime was really as bad as people make it out to be, and not just a talking point for VT haters… then why aren’t people talking just as much and just as harshly about the other non-athlete students that were involved? They committed the same crime, right?

Back before Journell was reinstated, I wrote on here several times that I didn’t support him being reinstated to play for VT again. I was all for him being allowed to transfer and play somewhere else without losing any eligibility, but I was under the mindset that his time at VT should have been over. That’s just my opinion. I don’t think his stupid decisions were worth losing all chances at continuing in his chosen career path, but I did think it was worth placing a bump in the road by having him transfer to a new school in order to continue playing football. For comparison, if an engineering major was convicted of a misdemeanor, do you take away his opportunity to continue his engineering education? Or do you just put a temporary punishment/inconvenience in place that allows them to continue with their career if they are willing to pay the price/punishment?

But, I’m not a decision maker. And again, those rules are in place to handle athletes with court issues for a reason. “Regular” students who get in the same trouble as Journell would be allowed to come back to school and finish their degree, right?

Well Well Well…Another game for Beamer fans to crow about…They must have watched a different game than i did…Nothing to crow about here…Should be hanging your heads in shame…Letting a convict plan on youor team is a raal joke…Tech should be playing there games in the Virginia Penal League…They have enough convicts on the team to make the roster right…But u ant tell a Hokie fan anything….As ong as they win it does not matter…Even when Marcus stepen the other player most everyone thought what he did was correct…Tech should burn the trophy cas this winter for heat…There will never be a Tropy there unless someone gives them a used one that they dont need…That is a joke also…hope this dont make to many people angry….haha…have a great life in Hokieland….i sure dont want to live there….

  25. hokie24 | September 5, 2012 at 5:12 pm

Vegas31… you say you’re not interested in being part of “Hokieland,” but you made the effort to search for a Virginia Tech Football blog and leave a message. Interesting.

“…Letting a convict plan on youor team is a raal joke … But u ant tell a Hokie fan anything…”

Vegas31… from struggling through your gibberish, we can see that it’s tough for you to tell anyone anything, not just Hokies.

  26. Vegas31 | September 6, 2012 at 2:14 am

Hokie 24…no i would not like to be in Hokieland or any other fantasy land u choose to live in…and as for my gibberish well u are so smart why did u not figure out that it was typos u were looking at…but that is like all Hokies they cant see the forest for the trees…have a happy life if u call what u are living a life…HEHEHEHEHE

  27. hokie24 | September 6, 2012 at 9:38 am

Again, Vegas31… you’re the one actively coming to a Virginia Tech Football blog while at the same time spouting how you’re not interested in anything Hokie-related…

  28. OMG! | September 6, 2012 at 12:23 pm

    Dear hokie24:
“And also OMG!, what a sad world we’d be in if “whether he’s done his time or not doesn’t matter!”

So if anyone ever does anything bad, they should continue to be continuously punished, never ending, from now on? Get real.”

I don’t believe people should be continuously punished, I just don’t believe in a double standard. If a non-sport playing student was charged with B&E and weapons charges would they still be in school? If the Holy Grail of Beamer Ball was held to the same standards, rules, regulations, and laws of the rest of the VT students I would have nothing to say.

  29. hokie24 | September 6, 2012 at 3:40 pm

“…I just don’t believe in a double standard. If a non-sport playing student was charged with B&E and weapons charges would they still be in school?…”

Well, OMG!, Matthew I. Brady, who was charged with the same charges in the same incident as Journell, and was a VT student at the time of the charges, is also still listed as a student at VT according to the VT people finder.

Still want to go on about some double standard?
