Hokies linebacker Tariq Edwards has been officially ruled out for the Austin Peay game because of his knee, while defensive tackles Antoine Hopkins and Luther Maddy and linebacker Bruce Taylor are questionable with ankle injuries.

Virginia Tech released its injury report for Week 2 on Thursday night. Earlier in the day, it confirmed that wide receiver D.J. Coles will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Edwards, who also didn’t play in the opener, is recovering after having surgery on his knee in mid-August to remove a screw from a previous procedure that was causing discomfort. Defensive coordinator Bud Foster said Edwards is still a couple of weeks away from returning, although he didn’t have an exact return date.

Maddy, Hopkins and Taylor all suffered ankle injuries in the Georgia Tech opener.

(UPDATE: Virginia Tech announced Friday that Chase Williams will star at backer in place of Taylor.)

Here’s the full injury report:

  • Out for Season: DT Nick Acree (knee), WR D.J. Coles (knee)
  • Out: LB Tariq Edwards (knee)
  • Questionable: DT Antoine Hopkins (ankle), P Ethan Keyserling (hip), DT Luther Maddy (ankle), LB Bruce Taylor (ankle)
Note: To be included on the weekly injury report, one must spend at least one day during game week in blue (limited) or green (no contact). If a player is not listed, he doesn’t meet the above criteria and practiced full all week, thus will play Saturday.

Well at least we are deep on the line and should have plenty of bodies to fill in and get reps while all those important players heal up. Austin Peay should be no contest……… but we thought that about JMU too. We’ll see.

I have to wonder why VT has so many season-ending injuries.

Let’s see, ankle injuries to defensive players, could that be the result of cut blocks by the Georgia Tech offensive linemen?
    Just saying …
Get well soon young men, we will miss you this week.
    Let’s go Hokies !!!

Can the Roanoke Times please remove the old linked articles under Most Popular-Recent Comments since they are so old and all from last season? Does Roanoke Times need a web programmer?

I have put the request in. They are working on it.

With the absence of Aromire, they should move Mckinnon back to rover.

That depth at DT we had is getting thin and the season is just starting. Based on all the leg injuries, hamstrings, ankles, and knees, I still have to wonder if our exercise and conditioning doesn’t play a role. I know, some things are unavoidable but we just seem to have so many more of these injuries. It could be that we are building bigger bodies than the one the good lord gave them and it just can’t support the added weight.I look at the legs of some of these big guards, tackles and ends and wonder how in the world they hold up that big ole body.

I see where you’re coming from there, Tom L. But I also wonder how much of the lower leg injuries has to do with the fact that we just finished playing Chop-Block University.

H24, I don’t think there was as much chop blocking as we have seen in the past. Watching the replay of the game, I noted that lot of time, the defensive players were under dogpiles, and that is a lot of weight on their legs. I would say it’s more from the grind of fighting off the offensive line, tackling the fullback or tailback, and then having other players crashing on your legs. Also, you have to note that Maddy and Hopkins were the two players with their hands on the turf more than anybody else. They have to use their ankles and calves muscle to push back against the offensive linemen. That’s also a lot of stress, so I am not entirely surprised they are banged up. Bruce Taylor wasn’t at 100% before the game, and Foster pretty much admit to that.

It’s kind of like two heavyweight boxers beating the snot out of each other, and they are going to be sore for days.

I know we have depth this year but we still can’t afford to lose important players this year ie. DJ Coles. By all means rest them this game. Let the football team use that state of the art fitness center that they just built so that the football team can be prevented from injuries as well.
