Virginia Tech sneaks back into coaches poll at No. 25

The Hokies’ 37-0 win against Bowling Green was enough for them to sneak back into the USA Today coaches poll at No. 25.

Virginia Tech, which dropped from 13th to unranked in both polls last week after losing to Pittsburgh, was the last team in the poll this week by the coaches, in a tie with Rutgers. The Hokies’ climb was helped by Michigan, UCLA and Arizona dropping out after losses.

Tech remained unranked in the Associated Press poll but got enough votes to come in 30th. It made only nine of 60 AP ballots, ranked anywhere from 21st to 25th.

The Hokies play Cincinnati next Saturday at FedEx Field at 3:30 p.m. The Bearcats are unranked but received votes in both polls.

This team should be top 20………they will by year end………top 15……ACC Champs……well deserving to be ranked again.

  2. Trevor | September 23, 2012 at 4:32 pm

#1 are you serious? Did you see the game last night between FSU and Clemson? They both looks to be the best teams in the ACC. Not Virginia Tech. Not this year, bub.

  3. Trevor | September 23, 2012 at 5:12 pm

I don’t understand how the poll voters could keep LSU at #3. They were horrible in their win over Auburn, by two points. Oh let me guess, it’s because of Les Miles and his spin machine crowing about how damn strong their football team is, right? I guess margin of victory don’t mean dilly squat.

  4. Steve78 | September 23, 2012 at 5:49 pm

So VT beats another high school team and sneaks back into the Top 25. Who has the best spin Les Miles or Frank Beamer? Want VT to compete against the big boys, fire Frank, beg Todd Grantham to take the head job and if Shane stays make him the recruiting coordinator, if he can learn how to recruit offensive linemen.

I will go by the AP poll. Too many better teams ahead of tech for them to be even thought of. Why the coaches have a soft spot for tech, who knows.

No need to worry about ranking right now. The hokies are going to be just fine this year. The team is still a work in progress(Like most college teams), but I believe the coaches will put the pieces together by the time they play clemson and fsu. Let’s go hokies!

Defense wins the games……You tell me where that was #2

  8. Baxter Johnson | September 23, 2012 at 7:11 pm

FSU looks for real, finally. Their O-line gave Manuel all day to wreak havoc and opened up huge gaps for FSU’s runners. Clemson’s defensive front simply couldn’t get any penetration. If VT wants to upset FSU on Thu night, VT’s D-line HAS to get pressure on Manuel or else it will be a loooooooooooooong night.

I also like the way FSU’s defense tightened up during the game. They were much more physical in the second half and Boyd really didn’t do much of anything after such a superb 1st half. Again, the difference was in the trenches as FSU’s defense started to get into Boyd’s face and prevented Boyd from getting into a rhythm with his speedy pass-catchers (THE strength of Clemson’s offense).

The only question for FSU now is how they respond to success. Will they trip up unexpectedly? Thu night in Blacksburg against a fired-up VT could be harder than it looks; ask LSU how their evening was on the road against a non-marquee Auburn team whose QB can’t throw.

    VT loses 3 more.

  10. Donald | September 23, 2012 at 8:58 pm

I’ll start going by the AP poll when they start excluding teams on probation (like Ohio State) like the Coaches poll does.

  11. Truth | September 23, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Clemson and FSU look really good.(speed kills)Virginia Tech plays a Different style of Ball.(Not going to happen this year)But we can hope!!

  12. Frank | September 24, 2012 at 7:28 am

NOBODY knows what will happen in the future with this Tech team, it could go either way.
    Time will tell.

  13. Palmetto State Hokie | September 24, 2012 at 8:12 am

Techs O looks like a JV high school team compared to Clemson or FSU’s

  14. crooked road | September 24, 2012 at 8:23 am

After the top 10-15, it doesn’t matter the disagreement between polls. The difference between #25 & #28 is, what? Probably the amount the Cincinnati coach voted the Hokies UP so that he could tell his team & fan base they were going against a Top 25 team.

Maybe that’s not the reason, but as I said, it doesn’t matter. The test comes in two weeks, against UNC.

BAHAHAHAHA to comment #1. Give me a break!!

  16. hokie24 | September 24, 2012 at 9:22 am

VT moving back into #25 in the coaches poll is not a big stretch, by any means.

Last week, when VT fell out of the coaches poll, they were sitting as the highest “others receiving votes” team, so basically #26.

One or two teams between #18 and #25 lost on Saturday… so VT moved up by default. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

  17. David in Salem | September 24, 2012 at 10:14 am

VT could very well lose against FSU and Clemson. I will even go so far as to say it is likely. However, it was considered likely that VT would pound Pittsburgh. Let the players develop for all teams involve. Then we play the games. The best team at that moment will win. The play against Cinci will tell us much. Cinci is a team that beat Pitt. I have vastly lowered my expectations, and do not expect a 10 win season this year. It was interesting watching the developing and maturing that occurred Saturday. ESPN kept harping about opportunities that Bowling Green left out on the field. VT left opportunities out there as well. So, I am going to enjoy the rest of this season. I am going to try not to have a stroke when this team plays poorly.
