Read a replay of today’s live Virginia Tech chat
The chat was a little quieter than usual this week. Hopefully things will get charged up again after the bye week. Read the replay below if you missed it.
I think I’ll skip next week, since there’s no game. I’m not sure exactly how we’ll handle the chat during weeks with Thursday night games, but I’ll tweet it out when we figure things out and put it on the blog.

Can you do one of these chats in the evening sometime for the thousands of us unable to be on here at 12:30?
We might try that sometime, but we’ve found there’s been better attendance during the day.
If you want to leave a question on this blog post, I’ll try to answer it in the chat.
Do you think “big time” college football has passed VT by? As a long time observer I think it has. Old tired blood !!
Will Coach Beamer ever make the necessary changes needed on offense to make this team competitive with real programs? Would it involve getting rid of members of his staff and bringing in a new offense?
Nicely done, Dr. Noisewater, you beat me to Alston Smith. I wonder if he understands he is a celebrity on this blog
I hear this old, tired blood, and big time college football questions all the time. I hear that we need a new offense just as often. I know I am in the minority, but hear me out. Hokie Pride has been built upon defense and running the football. How many national championships has the SEC won consecutively? 7 or 8? Outside of Florida for 2, what do those teams have in common? Defense and running the football. And one could argue Tebow was a runner of the football. Coach Beamer is still the man. Do we need new offensive coaches, maybe. But I think we need a recommitment to our principles even more. Right now I don’t believe this team has an identity. Are we trying to be VT or The Cam Newton Auburn Tigers? Or a little of both. I say we get back to what has built our program. Great defense, solid running, and quality special teams. It seems to be working for Alabama.
We need to start getting the quality defensive players, Curtis Grant the kid from Brookville that Ala. got and Stefon Antony that clemson got along with others. If we get a quality defense with depth and get some speed then the other will fall into place. But, the offense is not going to keep the defense off the field, no lineman and no depth and no backers with depth. Running the ball is a must but you cant be predictable. O line and using the tight end and full back are important. The offense needs revamping and defense recruiting needs stressed more. The spread gets killed when they face a good defense example WVU Texas tech had a good defense but was not rated and will lise more because that dont have a good offense. The recruiting is where tech is faltering , especially the defensive recruiting.
Oh god let’s not get rid of Newsome or Stinespring. They’re irreplaceable. You could never hope to get coaches half as good as them
Andy said it in his answer above-”Beamer has a few years left in coaching. He’s going to spend them with people he likes.”
Andy is probably correct. But it’s ludicrous to think that any institution that has a responsibility to its fan base, donors and players will allow a head coach and his staff to consistently underperform in critical areas (failure to win games against the top ranked teams, poor offensive line play, predictable and ineffective play calling) and be given a pass. No program that is serious about winning a national championship can do that and expect to achieve their goal. Unfortunately, we have an AD that cares more about a “family atmosphere” than he does about improving the team.
I’m not a big Paul Johnson fan but I do have to give him credit for removing Al Groh when it became apparent GT’s defense was a major problem for them.
It’s inexcusable to allow someone not to do their job and get away with it. No one is that big, even Beamer. This shows an institutional weakness that can’t be tolerated.
