Hey Dave - you do realize the BCS is a joke as is the ACC conferance right? There is no statistic you could throw out there that will justify an offense that has only cracked the top 50 nationally in total offense only 4 times since our 1999 team - all while at Stiney has been at the helm.

Perhaps you are content with mediocrity and qualifying/winning an ACC Championship by upending inferior oponents in weak conference, then qualifying by default (deservingly or not) to play in a BSC bowl against some lowly Big East team. Well I am not...

The VT Football program of the past (pre Beamer) is no execuse or justification for the shortcomings of a program that could be MUCH better if only Coach Beamer would get out of his own way!

46.WAKE UP BEAMER! Ask yourself what is behind the “poor execution.” I will not leave you hanging in suspense — It’s ALL about poor coaching! It is also much deeper than that,,, it’s predictable and unsophisticated play calling. You continue to stick by Stiney, O'Caine and Newsome with a blind vigilance while at the same time blaming the players for the ills of your program. Your loyalty to Stiney has come at the detriment of program.

I am afraid Beamer has become content setting his sights reaching a conference championship game in an otherwise weak conference that garners no respect. Beamer’s delusions of grandeur every season of playing for the national championship are just that, delusions and every year I just laugh. VT continues to be out coached and out played anytime they play against the “big boys.”

Even when the program reaches a BCS game by default as a result of dominating inferior opponents in the ACC, the offense continues to perform at a subpar level – just look at the stats over the last 10 years!!! Every season is like Groundhog Day, the VT defense bails out the underperforming offense, but alas the defense has an off year in 2012 and further exposes the VT coaching staff and offense for what they are, nothing more than a cut-rate offense.

If you’re not careful Beamer you too will fall out of favor just like your peers Bobby Bowden and Joe Pa. The sport is passing you by because you refuse to adapt and acknowledge and address the underlying root cause. Every season you stand on the sideline after a loss with this dumbfounded look on your face as if to wonder what just happened…

This quote/summary says it all about how clueless Beamer has become....

47.“When Virginia Tech led the nation with 41.4 points per game and was ninth nationally averaging 451.8 yards during Michael Vick’s breakout year in 1999, only one team averaged more than 500 yards and two more than 40 points.

Yet those offensive numbers remain the highs of the Beamer era. Virginia Tech has cracked the top 50 nationally in total offense only four times under Stinespring, who has been a lightning rod for criticism over the years.

Last season, with ACC player of the year David Wilson, the school’s two all-time leading receivers, Jarrett Boykin and Danny Coale, four senior offensive linemen, including ACC blocker of the year Blake DeChristopher, and Thomas, the Hokies averaged 413 yards per game, their highest total since 2000 but still one that ranked only 35th nationally.”

Good comment Dave. Couldn't agree more. For every situation fans have clamored for a coaching change, I would say at least half the time it did not work out the way everyone expected. Most teams probably turn out worse. Take this season with a grain of salt and move on. VT will continue to recruit well (despite the subpar season), and continue to build. Hey, the way I am starting to see it is that we will probably bring back a good group next year on defense and at some of the skill positions. The OL however, is going to be in major trouble next year if some guys don't step up.....

You people do realize that we are one of only 14 teams to even play in a BCS national championship game, don't you? And you haven't forgotten that we have 4 ACC championships since entering the league when most pundits said we would never win one - that's 4-1 over FSU since entering the league. By the way, the last time we went 2 years in-a-row without winning the ACC title was '05-'06 and then we reeled off 3 in the next 4 years. SO I don't know who it is you're looking for us to be? We're the benchmark in Virginia, the benchmark in the ACC since we arrived on the scene, and the second-most ranked team in the BCS since its inception. There are over 100 programs who would LOVE to have those facts to boast about. There are 11 in the ACC that would love to have those facts to boast about in the last 9 years.

Like the UVa fan said, be careful what you wish for. It took Beamer 7 years to build this program up from the trash heap. Do you really want to destroy it all because of a bad 8-game start with a program that's lost huge stars to the NFL, some of which were early exits?

I've read other posts comparing Frank Beamer to Don Nehlen. Are you insane? Nehlen had just 2 seasons in 21 years with less than 3 losses, 5 losses or more in 10-of-21 seasons, just 1 conference title, and 4 losing seasons AFTER his first 7 years. His teams were ranked at the end of the season just 7 times in ANY poll.

Virginia Tech languished for a century in nowhereville in college football before Beamer surprised everyone by turning around a program that was in debt and on probation into one which became loved nationally and a featured annual draw on ESPN Thursday night football. Heck, we made ESPN Thursday night football what it is.

The fact that we now draw criticism for our first truly bad season in years (it's not over, yet, by the way) speaks volumes about how much we have become envied. And the fact that so many posters are going beyond the pale to rip Beamer to shreds speaks volumes to how spoiled so many fans have become.

Rise above the noise and do Virginia Tech proud. We survived a mass murderer. We can surely survive a 4-4 start without losing our minds. We Are Virginia Tech!!!!

This graphic is a little hazy, but it has some decent stats.

From 1992-2011, VT had 77 players drafted, 13th most nationally. 47 in last 10 years. 20 in last five.

I'm sick and tired of fans defending the current coaching staff at VT, and the comment that "every good team has a down season", and "let's look at the bright side of things". There is no upside to this. What have we accomplished against the top teams in the country? How many top 10 teams have we beaten? How many big bowl victories do we have? The last time I felt good about a big bowl game was the Sugar Bowl in 95' against Texas. X Hokie Jim stated the following in a previous post above -

"I did not attend Va.Tech but am a Virginian. For years I have
contribute Thousands of dollars each year and hold 4 season tickets.
Since things won’t change in my time, I am giving it all up.
I can attend Emory and Henry games with out the disappointments and save
lots of money."

It seems the only way we as fans can persuade ADJW to direct a change in the coaching staff is by witholding the financial support. We as fans need something to get excited about, and it won't happen with the current coaching staff. We need an OC who can complement the competent mind of of our DC Bud Foster.

Look I'm proud of what Hokies have accomplished in the NFL and am really pulling for Danny Coale, Boykin and Darren Evans to see the field, but I don't see the home run hitters right now that a team needs to be a top 10 ten team every year. I just don't think you can point to all this talent in the NFL as some evidence of VT's success.
Hokies in the NFL is a great measuring stick for the VT program! Glad you brought it up.

How many of those NFL quality offensive players spent their time in Blacksburg playing on an offensive ranked outside of the top 100 in college football? It is really interesting when you consider how many were in Hokie uniforms at the same time!

But I'm not paid to analyse football talent? Too bad we don't know what an expert NFL draft analyst like Todd McShay thinks. He would probably be more credible than any high school coaches defending Frank.
