The debut of the A-Mac and Andy Podcast

We’re trying something new at the Roanoke Times/Virginian-Pilot, and it might either be our best idea ever or our worst. We shall see.

It’s a podcast featuring columnist Aaron McFarling and myself talking about the upcoming Virginia Tech-Miami game and Hokies football in general. It runs about 20 minutes.

To hear it, click here.

As I’ve mentioned before, I have a voice for newspapers, so my spoken word chops probably aren’t the greatest. Nonetheless, we’ll take constructive criticism here and any ideas you might have for a format in the future.

One idea might be to take questions from reader emails down the line. We’re really playing it by ear, so we can mess around with the format as much as we’d like. We’re hoping to do one of these each game week for the rest of the season.

If you’d like to send suggestions to us via Twitter, Aaron can be reached here and I can be reached here.

You guys do a great job.

Great idea. One problem – how can I listen to it if I’m deaf?

Nice first pass, guys. It was really good.

I know Andy focuses on VT football, but these type things could be pretty neat weekly – not just Tech football focused (because, well, uh, it is losing focus), but local sports focused, or whatever is in the headlines, be it MLB, NFL, NASCAR, you name it. Maybe it is Berman and Doughty in certain weeks, or one of them with one of you, and throw Nappy into the fray now and then – just depends on what is happening.

I don’t know that I’d focus on particular Q&A items, because people may not be able to get those in, or might bombard you with a bunch of worthless drivel, but you could expand on blog dialogues that hit a relevant topic, too. There have been some good ones.

Hell, you could even invite a charming person like myself, or others that contribute regularly to the blogs, to come into it – but I would use the overall population of information to come up with what I put in it. Bringing that McShay situation into this one was a nice touch.

It is pretty cool to hear discussions, and not just read them.

Just one thing – lose that cheezy typewriter sound on the front end and back end of it. Neither one of you guys even know what a typewriter is, let alone be able to use one!

When you guys hit Florida, there is a nice place to eat, Grampa’s Bakery, in Dania Beach, just down from the Ft. Lauderdale airport – it is the bomb, as is Sonny’s Famous Steak Hoagies, in Hollywood, FL (not that far from the stadium) – picked them up from Diners, Drive Ins and Dives – you shouldn’t miss them – get at least one of them, if you can.

Of course, if you are driving, there is the BBQ King Drive In, in Charlotte, but at this point, you are hopefully past it. If you are driving, it’d be a nice stop coming back.

I thought the podcast was excellent. Is there a chance that it would be taped on video just like when King and Doughty (and occasionally A-Mac) used to do it?

Great idea Bit…I’m sure it will be more interesting than the two old guys, no names mentioned..lol.

A Mac Attack just might work.

Andy, does it not work on I-Pads? I can’t get it to work.

You guys did a great job. Keep em coming!

OK, finally got to Miami. Apparently the player that we use requires Flash, so it won’t work on iPads or things like that. We’re working on finding a different player in the future so that will work.

We’re also trying to get it up on iTunes. There’s an approval process for that that takes a little bit of time, though. Hopefully in the future it will go up quickly.

We’ll continue to iron out the details with it. I’ll keep everyone posted.

My 6th grade son had me download a browser called Rover on my IPad . It will play flash. Gotta have a kid around if you use an iPad .

Here is an idea for you, speak into the microphone. That will help.

An MP3 those of us without i-whatevers could download would be great. I would love to listen to you guys while I exercise.

I enjoyed the podcast. Something cool to listen to while working. Looks like the Mcshay thing is picking up momentum. Glad you asked him Andy!! Really wished Sun Life was actually closer to Miami. Makes it hard to get excited about the Orange Bowl. Glad to know there was an A-Mac sighting, I thought he may be blowing all his money at the Hard Rock Casino.

    No, bring back Randy King

    podcast? what is this 2006?

  17. Philthyvt | November 1, 2012 at 3:54 pm

I liked it, was a good listen. I also like the VT feel to it, I don’t mind other stuff but keep it true to the VT sports, its the only reason I ever come to the website. A “podcast” something we could subscribe or download to, would be sweet so I can listen to it on the way to work. Good job fellows.

Nothing came through even I turned the volume to maximum! Guess there’s nothing for to comment on if I can’t get it! BTW, Hokie football is now a joke! Beamer is a has been and quickly becoming a joke himself on the order of JoePed at Pervert State Univ. and Bobby Bowden at FL. ST.

Thumbs up! But drop the “A-Mac” slice of the handle. Let Aaron use his given name.
