Read a replay of the live Virginia Tech football chat

A dwindling chat crowd again — are the fans defeated at this point? — but a good time nonetheless. If you missed today’s live chat, read the replay below.

I’m still trying to figure out when to do the chat next week, since Thursday would put it on Thanksgiving and A) doing it on a holiday seems ridiculous and B) I’d rather be eating food and watching the NFL on that day anyway. I’ll come up with a time for next week — possibly Friday? — and put it out on Twitter and on the blog.

Ask this question, ” Why are there so many unsettled positions on the team this late in the season ?”.

Any chance Logan Thomas pulls a Bryan Randall and has a very good final year after a disappointing penultimate year? At the beginning of 2004, Randall had no proven receivers (Wilford gone), no proven running back (KJ gone), a non-marquee O-line, AND a very tough opener against USC and we all saw what happened. But some will point out Kevin Rogers was the QB coach in 2004, not O’Cain. Your thoughts?

Does the negative fan chatter affect the players? The coaches? I understand we are a society of free speech, but in this day and time with every comment being nearly instantaneously broadcasted without a second to think, much less reconsider, is this a problem? Thank you for your time.

    respectfully, a fan

Bummer the chat wasn’t as lively as usual but I guarantee it will pick up when news comes out about coaching changes or not.

Regarding Marcus Davis’s somewhat blase’ (sp?) attitude regarding his pathetic “blocking,” his fumble and drop or two, reticence to get dirty by going down for a low throw, and his overall appearance of sleepwalking on the field have any coaches tried to light a fire in the young man or has he been coddled as I suspect?

At this point, fans are probably tired of asking questions that can’t be answered and hearing the same-old same-old from Beamer after every game. There are those in the crooked road crowd (I’m one of them) who saw through the smoke and mirrors several years ago and who understand that this season’s problem isn’t a one-time aberration, but the result of a long downhill slide in VT football. We’ve seen bowl games that should have been won, but for predictable play on offense with no adjustment, bad play calling from the sidelines, poor clock management, and a host of other issues that plague the program. We know that “10 win season” sounds good until one looks at a lot of the teams those wins came against (Little Sisters of the Poor and the like) and who applied some of the losses (Temple, JMU, plus just about all the Top-10 teams played). This crowd knows what needs to happen to fix a program they are invested in, have followed for years, and want to see be more successful — but no one in any position to say or do will comment about coaching adjustments (“Frank, it’s 2012, get with the program!”) and coaching changes.

Then there is the maroon Kool-Aid and orange-tinted glasses crowd who have their fingers stuck deep in their ears while chanting “Nah nah nah I can’t hear you” whenever anyone starts to point out the facts above. They don’t go any deeper than the surface of that “10-win season” theme and don’t want to be bothered with locations or results when the 19-year bowl streak is mentioned. All they can say is “The sun is going to come up tomorrow and the Hokies will rise again.”

One comment on the chat (and other mentions) — Stinespring is touted as being a great recruiter and to lose him in that role would hurt VT’s ability to get good players. On the other hand, how many good players (such as top-notch quarterbacks) have the Hokies played against who were/are from Virginia and could have/should have come to Blacksburg? If the guy is that wonderful, what’s the problem?

Joe, you ascribe to me a level of notoriety that I don’t deserve. My perspectives, though, you did accurately describe. This BC game doesn’t really matter. We’ll win it easily, and the offense will probably pad their stats a fair amount. The UVa game is the one where I hope the players & coaches who haven’t performed all year will wake up & realize that we NEED to win this one. Not because of bowls, but because of pride.
