Gameday post: Virginia at Virginia Tech

I hope everyone bundled up for today, because it’s cold outside. How cold? It’s supposed to be 32 degrees at kickoff with a wind chill of 20. That’s because winds will be blowing at 21 mph. It’s a good thing it will be 70 degrees with no breeze in the press box.

I’m not really sure if this weather is an advantage for either team. With the wind, you’d figure the team that runs the ball better would have an advantage. Well, neither team runs the ball that well. So call it a push.

Here are a few more links to get your gameday started …

** Follow me on Twitter and Facebook. I’ll be tweeting throughout the game.

** Virginia Tech’s players don’t want to be the ones to end the bowl streak or the winning streak against UVa.

** That eight-game losing streak motivates the Cavaliers, even if they haven’t been around for the entire time.

** Columnist Aaron McFarling writes that the Hokies have to approach this game as though it may be their last this season, an unusual feeling in Blacksburg.

** Who has the edge? I broke it down here, along with a prediction: Virginia Tech 26, Virginia 17. Other predictions: UVa beat writer Doug Doughty: Virginia Tech 27, Virginia 10. McFarling – Virginia Tech 24 Virginia 17.

** Aaron and I recorded another podcast this week. Give it a listen here.

** The injury report was pretty light this week. Safety Michael Cole (neck) is out, although that was already announced. Receiver Kevin Asante (toe) is also out.

** The Hokies say they’re going with the fighting gobbler helmet again, along with orange unis and white pants. Last week they ran a little misdirection with the uniform choice. Are they doing it again?

** The line opened at 10 and held pretty steady all week. That’s where it is heading into the game too.

So who is doing the inadvertant ribbing at the Roanoke times? One of your headlines reads “Bowling Green vs. VA Tech”!

  2. Charles Gardner | November 24, 2012 at 9:39 am

Stiney, O’Cain and Newsome are resigning after the game today.

  3. Joe Hokie | November 24, 2012 at 9:52 am

We can only hope you are right, Charles. Let O’Cain retire with grace, send Newsome and Stinespring out of town on a rail, with a nice coat of tar and feathers to keep them warm during their trip. Stinespring has shown he deserves nothing from VT, based on his massive screw-up a couple of years ago. He had Tyrod Taylor and a boatload of talent on his roster and did nothing. Instead of spending the summer before that season coming up with plays that would take advantage of that talent, he kept the same tired plays and forced the talent into those plays. The only new play was the “when it all falls apart, Taylor make up something.” That play got used a lot. The guy also has a long record that displays his lack of understanding of clock management and his lack of ability at making in-game adjustments. Good bye and good riddance to the impediment to VT’s success.

Of course, turning things around will also involve someone applying a clue-by-four to Frank Beamer to get him to shake loose of some of his stuck-in-the-past ideas about football.

UVA will win this game 23-20, the drought will be over. Turnovers big today. Beamer on the way out, George Welsh will be the new VT coach.

  5. Charles Gardner | November 24, 2012 at 10:07 am

George Welsh? Barry has been taking something.

  6. Eagle | November 24, 2012 at 10:49 am

Biggest game in vt history today!!

  7. JSwift | November 24, 2012 at 11:46 am

Why does VT have Foghorn Leghorn on one side of their helmet? Did they sign a deal with Looney Toons?

    From Wikipedia:

Foghorn Leghorn made an appearance in a parody clip of Family Guy when he approached Colonel Sanders and explained that he was walking by and when he noticed the aroma of “eleven herbs and spices”. Sanders decapitates Foghorn and the body is running around. The disembodied head says, “Look at that boy! Looks like a chicken with his head…wait a minute” pauses when he realizes it was himself.

Maybe the wind will help Logan’s accuracy… NOPE!

  9. Terry | November 24, 2012 at 12:08 pm

Any way to see or hear the game without ESPNU? And your FB and tweets, of course….

UVA’s most valuable player = Logan Thomas

  12. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Offfense continues to be terrible. Stiney needs to go. O’Cain and Newsome too.

  13. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Logan’s NFL draft stock dropping like a rock.

  14. Jared French of Greene county | November 24, 2012 at 12:38 pm

If this game doesn’t show where the majority of the Hokies problems are you will never see it! The defense and special teams have made big plays and this pathetic offense can do nothing! This whole offensive staff has got to be fired!!! If Beamer does not make the move then show him the door also! Sick of this crap!

  15. Barry from Ivy | November 24, 2012 at 12:41 pm

93.5 FM local radio; computer access for ESPNU.
I have revised my score prediction; both of these teams are near pathetic, maybe VT is even worse, not sure. New score : UVA 3 – VT 0.

  16. Mr. Potato Chip | November 24, 2012 at 12:41 pm

This has to be the worst 1st quarter of a football game I have ever seen. All I see are the chokies doing nothing on offensive while on defense only one player making plays. Those uniforms are ugly very ugly. Maybe the chokie nation can help the offensive out by yelling out we need a running game and just maybe someone might hear and do something about it!

  17. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Outcoached + Out played = UVA win

  18. proof reader | November 24, 2012 at 12:46 pm

The first one who recovers a coughed up the ball on or near the goal line wins.

  19. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Momentum is with UVA. Go “Hoos”.

Logan is really terible.Offense is terrible. Coaching is terrible. For me, I have expressed by displeasure by not showing up today. I have season tickets. My seats are empty to send a message.

  20. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 2:13 pm

    Embarrassed again on the ESPN.

  21. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 2:15 pm

Have you noticed that Frank is catching flies again!!

  22. Mr. Potato Chip | November 24, 2012 at 2:15 pm

What happened to that hokie/chokie offense? I guess that today’s its the Logan Thomas show starring only L Thomas. Because the only one playing offensive is L. Thomas the I guess he is the only one who wants to win and yet his sorry offense can’t help him. Where’s the chokie nation now?

  23. Mr. Potato Chip | November 24, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Maybe a kick to the lunch box might do the trick!

  24. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 2:20 pm

ACC Coastal CHUMPS! ACC CHUMPS! National CHUMPS!!!!!!! What an embarrassment. Weaver, Stiney, Newsome and O’Cain need to go!!!!!!! Hopefully Logan will do the honorable thing and go pro, but this will not happen as he wouldn’t be able to make an NFL team even as a walk on.

    Put in Mark Leal!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Mr. Potato Chip | November 24, 2012 at 2:24 pm

I guess my suggestion of yelling for an running game has failed them today. It has failed them all year long exepect when their only offensive player L. Thomas runs and then takes hits and then can’t make plays because he is half way knocked out. Whatever happens today may this year be a lesson to the entire chokie nation and that is you want to be the best then show up and play and stop putting asswipes on tv saying “we are going to win, we haven’t been in this position before” Put up or shut the hell up!!

  26. 1976 Hokie Fan | November 24, 2012 at 2:36 pm

There is life at Lane. Maybe Stinkey Stiney was asleep on that drive!

  27. Frankie's Angel | November 24, 2012 at 3:05 pm

1976 Hokie Fan, get a hobby dude. Set up an anti-hokie blog. We don’t want to hear that stuff here.

  28. Mr. Potato Chip | November 24, 2012 at 3:48 pm

Frankie’s Angel dude, deal with it! What you can’t handle what he is saying after all its a free country to say what you think about a sorry team like the chokies. I guess what he was saying gets to you? Well deal with you and take your pathetic win and enjoy it because the shit bowl awaits and your precious hokies will be exposed for what they are and that is a over rated sorry team. If you can’t accept that you can go choke on it!!
