Gayle, Tyler, Exum make All-ACC second team, but Hokies have no first-team picks for first time since joining league
For the first time since joining the league, Virginia Tech had no first-team All-ACC selections.
The ACC released its the all-conference picks made by the media Monday. Defensive end James Gayle, linebacker Jack Tyler and cornerback Antone Exum were second-team picks, but the Hokies had no first-team selections.

Defensive tackles Derrick and Antoine Hopkins, linebacker Bruce Taylor and cornerback Kyle Fuller received honorable mention, but no offensive players were recognized.
Quarterback Logan Thomas, who finished second to Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins in preseason Player of the Year voting, did not even earn an honorable mention.
Gayle, a junior from Hampton, had 40 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and a team-high five sacks to go with 27 quarterback hurries. He was a second-team pick last year too.
Tyler, a junior from Oakton who stepped into the starting lineup because of Tariq Edwards‘ injury, led the team and was third in the ACC with 112 tackles. He added 11 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks.
Exum, a junior from Glen Allen, made the transition from safety to cornerback in the offseason. He made 47 tackles and had a team-high four interceptions. He had two turnovers in the Hokies’ win against Virginia last week, including an interception in the final minutes that set up the game-winning field goal.

This shows how bad our offensive coaches are!
Funny thing about the Hokies. Our offense cannot produce and we go 6 – 6. The O – coaches still have jobs. N.C. State goes 7 – 5 and their Head Coach gets fired. Something is rotten here. Weaver must not get it. Definitely a management problem in Hokieland.
Im surprised that in Special Teams Beamerball University, the punter would make it..ooops!
I would have thought that Lester Carlson, being the fashion maven
he is, would have been named costume designer of the year.
(orange jerseys and cowpie helmets, give me a break!)
I’m not at all surprised that none of the offense players from VT got any sniff for all-ACC. That tells me the media members have lost all respect for the Hokies’ offense.
As for the defense, one glaring omission is Jarrett, who has played quite solidly all season. That also means the media members respects Foster’s defense more than O’cainspring could muster together.
The offensive coaches have to go. An extremely poor showing on that side of the ball this year. Beamer sounds like he attended spin class at the DNC. If Weaver can’t see that things have been going down hill for several years and the program is at the brink of falling off the cliff then … get prepared for several years of preBeamer type records. No coach will be able to rebuild in the 3-4 years allotted most coaches if this ineptitude continues for a couple more years. Refuse any bowl invitations and get it done now.
Enough o the “Refuse the bowl invitation” nonsense every one. Do any of you actually think the ACC or University would let them do that?? They can’t fill the bowl slots, as is. With the ACC and VT possibly trying to make $$, it is not an option. The players need as much practice as they can get going into the spring. Be patient everyone. Heads will probably roll soon enough…
Does anyone know if Shane Beamer is back from ATL yet?
I am very surprised that any of the VT players made the second team, the Hokies are just an all around bad team. As Beamer tells us after every game “our guys played hard” , But guys who play hard and are less than mediocre don’t deserve to be chosen on 1st or 2nd teams. I can’t wait until next year, can you?
Shane Beamer isn’t going anywhere because he is unqualified. He is drawing a fat paycheck and doing nothing. I take that back, he is a decent gutter and hot dog salesman. Did you folks notice who is playing FSU in the ACC championship game?
With all the head coach openings out there don’t be surprised to see Bud Foster at a new school.
Could it be possible that VT had no All-Acc performers on offense because maybe the talent level is not quite there for now? The only player on offense with a big-time reputation was Logan Thomas and he simply had a bad season. He will surely bounce back next year.
Stinespring is a good coach and he will be back next season. Make no mistake about that. Stiney runs the offense Coach Beamer wants and calls the plays the entire staff decides will work best in certain situations. The one thing Stiney cant do is go down on the field and block, pass, catch, run, etc. The players need to do that.
Lets admit we are in a basketball conference. Where would these players be if they played in the SEC. Look at the latest top 25. How many are SEC teams? I try to watch Tennannsee when available. Look at their record and Dooley is shown the door. They play a defferent game. How many 5 star recruits do we have at VPI? UVA is not even part of the statement. I notice the network carring the VPI vs UVA didn’t even classify this as a rivilary. I know the Roanoke Paper tries to give it a build up but when you beat a team what is now 9 times it is no longer a rivilary. Saw a bumper sticker UVAAAK (Uva annual a– kicking). I guess some were surprised.
When the SEC teams has a 5 star recruit get hurt watch this Saturday and see what replaces him.
Bud Foster isn’t going anywhere, if he was qualified, someone would have already selected him. These overpaid Tech coaches have a gold mine where they are, they have successfully duped all of us but it is starting to catch up with them and the Hokie natives are not happy.
Barry, go have a beer at Duners and relax. Don’t waste your time watching the Ga Tech cowflies play FSU.
OK take a deep breath Trevor, Danny and Barry. The Hokies always get the shaft on the all ACC teams even when they were dominating the league. What you should be talking about is Clemson getting 6 players on first team O, even though they aren’t even in the titles game and just got spanked at home against their biggest rival!! Give me a freakin break!! So , 14 teams in the league and and 6 of the top 11 on O are from Clemson?? What a joke…..ACC football is a joke. Thanks Swofford!!
Makes no sense to fire before a bowl game – Wait until after the bowl game, I think there will be at least three gone – All from the Offense side!
Jimmy Turk should have been at least honorable mention!
I think the Hokies should fire some of their fair weather fans.
This football program has serious problems, it is not just a single player, a single coach, or the officiating.
Without some changes this program is on a decline that will last until coaches are removed from Tech.
Weaver has been in the position too long, and he needs to go also.
This year play on the field is a direct reflection of the way the uniforms looked. Did we have any maron pants?
#16 you got to produce to get rewards. tech did not get shafted. Another long list of excuses for the hokies.
Congrats to the Hokie players who made All-ACC. I thought Taylor played well enough to make 2nd team, but I didn’t see his competition play very often.
Aristotle—-you must not be the same one that lived in the olden days because he would know that Gerogia Tech is going to pull the upset. The Jackdets will sting on Saturday, that is not stink either, it is stinggggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy because after VT lucked out in the last 40 seconds and beat the Jackets, then to see how they all finished up and everyone saw how frossly overated VT was and has been for ages and GT gets the last laugh. This is so wonderful!!!!
Barry,
Got a $20 that says FSU, at the minimum, covers the (currently) 14 point spread. And once the Jackets go 6-7 they’ll be the ones sitting home since there are already 70 eligible teams and if the NCAA actually bothers to follow its own rules, the Jackets’ waiver is meaningless. Further, your team has the same record as the Hokies, who won by the way. So I guess your team is every bit as bad as VT is this year.
Watch what you say and how you say it, son. Your own words can come back to haunt you and already did once back in September.
Danny,
In a program back in 1992 in which I own shows the roster, coaching staff and front office of the Virginia Tech Hokies football program. Guess who the team photographer was? Brian Stinespring. What a country when you can elevate from obscure shutterbug to assistant head coach. Show me any team that averaged #90 for the last 10 years in total offense and I’ll show you a fired offensive coordinator. But, the issue isnt stinespring’s employment, rather, its the idiots in place allowing it to happen. Steger will never fire frank Beamer, no sir, he wont. The big time donors will have final say in where this program ends up. Steger is allowing it to remain status quo and, until some behind the scenes power speaks up Hokie fans like Danny and others will overdose on beamer-laid for years to come.
No All-ACC first-teamers? Disappointing, but deserved. One more piece of motivation for harder work this offseason… players and coaches alike. Alabama awaits in the 2013 opener….
… or we listen to the whiners and “experts” and fire eveyone in sight… cementing our return to the bad old days.
Some of you guys kill me with your comments about ol the players are bad cause to me thats a crock of s…!. This seasons failures to me cause i have common sense is mainly on the coaching staff starting with FB. I mean for Beamer to continue to start MD after seeing his lack of effort game after game i mean dont you think that pissed the players off for him to continually play this dude? I mean do you actually think that made the players want to bust there a..? I mean seriously ask yourselves that!! Not to mention in the fall Sanford and Edmunds were probably our best performers outside of JCC yet they were in blacksburg all year while we were losing. One of Beamers bigg faults is nomatter how talented the freshmen are hes not gona play em with a few exceptions butt Bobby Bowden did and hes won a few titles plus look at what Sammy watkins did last year. Have youll happen to notice how created maryland is at getting the ball in Stephon Diggs hands and as much as possible i might add? JCC is just as quick if not more and have we tried to utilize his skills in the open field at all? No of course not. We have talent we just dont know how to utilize it because our off coaching staff is not very creative at all!!! The coaching staff created a mutiny in the locker room this year thats why players werent busting their a…. like hokie teams have done in the past and thats why we are going to the peanut bowl in pulaski co this year!!!!!! Thats what happened this year soo dont blame the players we have talent nomatter what anybody says!!!!!!
How did they leave a Heisman candidate QB off the 1st team?
