Episode 7 of the Hokies Press Pass podcast

It’s time to get a little vacation in before the bowl game. I’ll keep the blog going over the next week with a few stories from yesterday’s media day. For today, here’s the latest podcast with Aaron McFarling and me.

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

As usual, we hit several subjects. We touch on the Hokies’ scheduling agreement with Old Dominion, Mel Kiper‘s thoughts on Logan Thomas, Tech’s sluggish bowl ticket sales and the 1999 Heisman Trophy pick. Aaron also gives a sneak peak at his bowl guide, with his upset special. (And coming from two people who finished in last place of the Fearless Forecasters, where could you go wrong?).

“Recruiting war vs. Old Dominion” Are you seriously kidding me…. Then I assume Alabama is recruiting against UAB….. What a dumb statement.

Let’s not rush Logan , he will never get another chance for a last year in college. He has his degree, but why rush into the nfl just to hold a clip board. He will regret losing that last year. There are no garrentees that he won’t get hurt in the nfl, although that might not happen unless he suffers a nasty paper cut. There are also no money garrentees in the nfl. Get hurt and your gone. As for Vick he is gone, and on his way down hill in the nfl. He lost me ever since the dog killing spree. Andy I know that a lot of people, including myself enjoy your work and the pod cast. It is by far the best sorce for timley info on the hokies. I usually check the roa. Times site three times a day, to see whats knew. I’m always disappointed when there are no new items. Can’t you just work harder, and longer, so I can get my fix? Don’t be bothered by the loyal group of hokie haters,
That’s how they get there kicks, and they enjoy what they do. There are a good number of positive comments on the blog.
Don’t go back to cheese land, we enjoy you here! Merry Christmas, the short coach

Agree with Keith, like your work Andy.

I think if Thomas wants a chance at starting in the NFL, he should come back for another year. If for nothing else, another year to mature. I’ve read several stories that say the Giants and Coach Coughlin’s biggest issue with David Wilson wasn’t fumbling but maturity. Another year may have helped him in that respect as well. Remember, these are very young men thrown into a world of high pressure and many demands. One or two screw-ups and they could be gone for good. Not sure I could have handled that type of pressure in my early 20′s.

Not sure I would call them Hokie haters, more like the voice of truth and balance. Kudos to Andy for allowing differing opinions, that is always best to get proper perspective on sports.

A message to Logan Thomas from a SC-based fan. I know you had a rough sophomore year and your prospects for a first round NFL draft is likely but, we’d like for you to stay. You’ll never get an opportunity to finish out your senior year after leaving and those memories will loom LARGE in later years. Stay and bring success to Tech next year and gain additional maturity…and memories for your football career.

  6. 540Hokie | December 14, 2012 at 2:22 pm

You’re right Barry, they’re not Hokie haters. The correct word is TROLLS.

  7. shortpump | December 14, 2012 at 4:34 pm

540HOKIE you are saying everything is perfect and nothing needs to change ????? Are you talking about VA Tech football ???? See what happens when Techs defense is on the field 75% of the game againest Alabama next fall ……

  8. Barry from Ivy | December 14, 2012 at 6:44 pm

540Hokie has been drinking the VT Kool Aid; I think it is time to face reality with these Hokies. They are going nowhere fast with Beamer & Co.

  9. Eagle | December 14, 2012 at 8:18 pm

All I want for Christmas is for vt to go to the SEC!!

  10. VTRedwolf | December 14, 2012 at 9:18 pm

Logan has to weigh only the potential that he will be hurt against all of the other variables.

He’ll not get any shorter or weaker. Doubtful his completion percentage could get any worse or that VT’s season could possibly go any worse, both were in the bottom of Div 1 or whatever the heck we’re calling it these days. I don’t really see any number of better prospects coming out next year that have the measurable the NFL so covets. Let’s face it the NFL values QB height above all.

No he has only to fear injury and that is no small fear. That’s the decision he’ll have to make – can he make it through the season running the ball the way he has.

  11. Barry from Ivy | December 14, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Go to the SEC and compete with Kentucky for the cellar? You are kidding, right?

  12. Mike Boryan | December 14, 2012 at 9:30 pm

Logan has a chance to show he is one of the top quarterbacks in Tech history. Isn’t that worth something? He will have plenty of time ahead of him to make money in the NFL. So many football players leave college short of their senior year and miss time to have a lot of fun and earn the respect of Hokie Nation. And that means a lot too.! My advice to Logan. Take the road less traveled and it will make all the difference. (Robert Frost).

  13. Frank | December 14, 2012 at 9:33 pm

    Let’s go Hokies !!!

  14. paul | December 14, 2012 at 10:27 pm

A wise man once said more or less this: “the best way to win an argument is not raise your voice but strengthen your point of view.” This is why some on this thread come off as ‘haters’.

  15. Mike3 | December 14, 2012 at 11:00 pm

You would have to think VT has been contacted in some manner by the SEC in the past few weeks with all of the media damamge repair conducted by Weaver and company recently.
Be careful what you wish for.

  16. Tony | December 14, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Great point Paul. Maybe Barry could enlighten everyone on why VT would be (in upcoming years) competing for the “cellar” with Kentucky?? Sure, VT had a bad year and you may have an argument there…when speaking of this year! But what about in previous years, or upcoming years?? What makes you believe this is nothing more than a bad year and that VT would be lucky to win 2 or 3 conference games in the SEC..going forward? I would argue that VT would be a 8 or 9 win team the last several number of years if they were in the the SEC.

I would love to hear what you have to say Barry. Please, educated answers..not ignorant troll responses like you normally give.

  17. Jazzman | December 14, 2012 at 11:57 pm

Barry: In your myopic view you think VT is going nowhere fast. Maybe, but they seem to go down to Atlanta or stay in Blacksburg and whip your Yellow Jackets almost every year. USC will pass them silly in the Sun Bowl. GT may run an exciting high risk offense, but they never seem to understand that the other part of the game is called DEFENSE. You keep squeeking about a sub 500 team (one that the worse VT team in 20 years beat, again), GT had to stoop to appealing for approval to have a loosing season and Miami even gifted them a trip to the ACC post season. I’m all for supporting your team, but PLEASE HAVE A SENSE OF PERSPECTIVE!!!

  18. scott whitaker | December 15, 2012 at 7:55 am

Hey Barry, do you think this might be the year for Johnson to finally win a bowl at GT? 0-4 against some major powerhouses there. Is GT the first 6-7 team ever to get into a bowl? Talk about needed perspective. I would say Johnson is overrated but he’s really never been “rated” to begin with…

  19. Jerry | December 15, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Barry believes what he says simply because he needs to. Delusion can be an ugly thing
