One last hurrah for the Fighting Gobbler logo

Virginia Tech is retiring the Fighting Gobbler logo effective Jan. 1, so the Hokies will be giving it a sendoff tonight.

Tech’s equipment room Twitter account put out this picture of what the Hokies wear tonight against Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl. It’s a maroon matte helmet with an orange Fighting Gobbler logo on the side of it, the first time the team has gone with the look.

The stripes down the middle are fancier (and abbreviated) too. On the back is a smaller version of the “Prevail” decal the team wore in practice this week to honor victims in the Sandy Hook and Virginia Tech shootings.

The helmets will be auctioned off after the game, with part of the proceeds going to the Sandy Hook fund.

In point-spread news, it looks like a lot of late money came in on Rutgers. The line went from Virginia Tech by 2 to a pick ‘em since this morning.

Probably the best alternate helmet we’ve worn this year although I would have gone without the stripe. Why are they doing away with the fighting gobbler logo? It’s a classic. What’s wrong with our marketing people?

  10. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 5:40 pm

    Marine Mike,

What about those Hokies? 2nd Offensive Play of the game for VT and a Rutger’s Touchdown. Go Hokies!!!!!!! With Stiney in the stadium, it is good for 21 points for Rutgers.

It is going to be a butt whipping. Again on national tv. WOW

  11. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 5:41 pm

David Wang startted. Ground game will suffer.

  14. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 6:22 pm

The only way Frank will change things is if they loose big on national tv AGAIN. Well on their way to another post season embarrassment.

Nice to see that the Hokie football program would rather sell out to pimp Nike directed merchandising than to focus the honor to the victims at Sandy Hook. Then again, why should we be surprised? Frank has long go sold out to Nike interests while falsely portraying the incessant uniform changes as the whims of 19 yr old jocks.

The oversampling of the 4/16 tragedy over the Sandy Hook incident was bad enough, but then, once the ESPN cameras moved elsewhere, Nike interests guided Frank to the inevitable money grab.

I’d LOVE, absolutely L-O-V-E, to discover that I was wrong in being certain that less than 10% of revenue generated by well meaning Hokie fans towards the purchase of these ridiculous helmets was actually sent to Sandy Hook relief efforts.

I won’t hold my breath in waiting for that evidence which will NEVER be produced by the VaTech athletic department.

  17. crooked road | December 28, 2012 at 6:50 pm

The percentages of the funds donated for these relief efforts haven’t been made public for well over a decade now, if ever. It’s a lot of PR fluff, then zero followup by the VT athletic department. Draw your own conclusions. If it were any charity not affiliated with an emotional tie to your constructive years, you’d think they were dishonest and not to be trusted. Of course, since it involves the Fancy Gap Saint who walks across the Duckpond without moistening his Nikes, it’s not to be questioned.

Virginia Tech is the most inept offensive team I have ever seen. It will be a long night for the defense and things could get ugly!!

  19. Mike | December 28, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Tech would have to improve just to suck. Fire stiney and the whole offensive staff.

  20. 1971 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:09 pm

I sure am happy we had time to prepare for this game. Lord only knows what we would look like if we were not prepared. Beamer is again showing his bewildered and lost look.

  21. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:12 pm

    Well,

What about those hokies. Half time commentary: Hokies are Hopelessly Helpless. Maybe I need to pulling for UVA. At least UVA doesn’t get embarrassed on national tv.

  22. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:16 pm

Hokie Nation: Let’s just move on to next year. Fire Stiney, O’Cain and Newsome, spend some money to get some top flight offensive coaches and forget about 2012. After tonight, the 2012 Nightmare will be over.

  23. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Halftime Rutgers MVP is a tie between Brian Stinepsring and Logan Thomas.

  24. the other Tony | December 28, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Total embarrassment and Newsome is the WORST coach we have ever had, worse than hoo Stokes and hoo family Dunkenberger.

  25. Ancient Bobcat | December 28, 2012 at 7:20 pm

“Tech would have to improve just to suck”. Have to save this one!!! Excellant statement, Mike!

  26. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:21 pm

In the words of the fan in “Water Boy”, “we suck”!

  27. Mr. Potato Chip | December 28, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Beamer and that what the hell just happened look on his face defines this years chokie football season! What once was so much hype and love for this sorry football program goes down as an over hyped, over rated, sorry excuse of a team and the loyal chokie nation accepts it? Pathetic simply pathetic!! Enjoy the 2nd half!

  28. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:34 pm

Another half of embarrassment is underway. How bad will it get? I need a large alcoholic beverage to kill the pain. If I were Exum, Thomas and Gayle, I would bolt to the NFL so fast that there is a huge sucking sound in Blacksburg heard across the state. Look at our head coach: Beamer is Befuddled!!! Again.

  29. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Has the thought of puking crossed anyone’s mind tonight?

  30. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:33 pm

It is called the “Choke and Puke”. The Hokies choke and I puke.

  31. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:36 pm

Watch Stinespring and the offense choke!! Wang is back in. No ground game!!

  32. tom | December 28, 2012 at 8:38 pm

    1976 Hokie, are you drunk?

  33. 1976 Hokie | December 28, 2012 at 8:53 pm

Watch the Hokie Offense give this one away!! Same ole same ole

  34. I'm in DC | December 29, 2012 at 2:05 pm

Hey 1976 Hokie, seems you shut your mouth kind of early. What happened loser?! You too Mr. Potato chip (dumd name). You shut your pie hole a bit early too. You two must feel really stupid running your mouth all afternoon only to be shut p by those wonderful Hokies. Bottom line, both of you can s— it!!!

  35. Adopted Hokie | December 29, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Players down…fan faithful crashing….offensive offense, again….overdependent defense, again…..Beamer seemingly just riding out his contract w/o manning up to make needed changes. About sum it up???!!!
