No way that Pep Hamilton or anyone comes into VT with a title or promise of next HC. Fans recognize Bud Foster's contribution to what success we have enjoyed. In reality who's to say he's not more important to the Post-Michael Vick success than Frank. Anything approaching an affront to Bud Foster would make most fans heads explode. He is perhaps more revered than Frank Beamer in this and many fans minds. And the thought of Shane Beamer's unearned assention to OC or HC is laughable at this point. The RB's he coached this year were terrible. In fact he might be an obstacle to hiring a new OC who wants to bring in his own staff. Can you imagine Frank laying down the hiring caveat, "and by the way my boy Shane stays". Perhaps Shane would be the choice for special teams coach since Frank has been absolutely awful at it and it's the only position Shane has any on the field experience with. Yes I think Shane earned his way on to the coaching staff with his success at other schools but he has not earned anything in the way of a promotion from the job he's done at VT. I say bring back Hite to coach the running backs if he'll come. He taught RB's to move vertical, something these guys didn't seem to understand this year. Everyone thought they could bounce out side.

Unless Bud Foster doesn't want the job he's earned a crack at it even if it is only for 5-7 years after Frank leaves. Frank can't have more than a few years left to coach - even with the weight he lost he doesn't look healthy. We owe Frank a lot, but certainly not a knighthood for his son.

I watched the Redskins and the Seahawks and saw: Russell Wilson, Will Montgomery, Cam Chancellor and DeAngelo Hall. I'm sure I'm missing a few other Virginians. The point is that why people believe that a top offensive coordinator wouldn't come to this state is crazy. Hackenburg out of Fork Union is rated the #1 QB in the country. Derrick Green and Taquan Mizzel are the #1 and #2 RB's in the country. The state has PLENTY of football talent! It's just a matter of cutting out this Andy Griffin, Mayberry mentality, and understanding that the rest of the state doesn't operate like that! This guy Pep Hamilton wants to hang 50 points on defenses, then that's what he should be allowed to do if he comes to Blacksburg! This guy is all the way in California and is responsible for recruiting VA. That say's alone say's plenty about the state!

After thinking more about Chip Kelly's recent meeting with NFL teams, I wonder if Pep Hamilton would even accept a VT OC offer, if he was in BBG. I wouldn't be surprised if he interviewed either way, but looking at his own precedent coaching moves, he seems like he might expect the opportunity to be an HC within the next few years.

How would this work within the "community" of other VT coaches who have already been there for some time? Whether Bud Foster has any OC experience or not, he likely would be a much more prepared HC than Hamilton if Beamer retired within the next few years. Just my two cents.

Hiring Pep Hamilton for OC would be an interesting decision. Given the House that Frank built, I think it would be safe to assume that the new OC would be someone committing to an understanding of a 5+ year agreement (given the environment of stability built on longtime coaching loyalty). If it was Pep Hamilton, this is someone coming from a frequently changing recent history (Chicago to UNM to Stanford in the last 5 years). Hamilton is also serving under a recently hired HC Shaw that likely would not be going anywhere anytime soon himself (Shaw is in only his 2nd year as a HC).

To decide to make a lateral move, discussions probably included some sort of understanding of future succession (clarifying that CFB is confirming that he is retiring within 5 years). Might this also mean that it would be understood that Bud Foster would not be the next HC after Beamer? (Again, if Hamilton wasn't looking to be considered for the HC opportunity within 5 years or so, why would he leave Stanford and a situation where he is already familiar and successful?)

If Pep Hamilton is hired to be the next OC, then this might provide more insight into the future of VT coaching succession. At 38, he is about 2 1/2 years older than Shane Beamer, who would probably be promoted to OC if Hamilton eventually took over for CFB when he retires in a few years. Bud Foster is 54. If he ended up replacing CFB as HC in a few years, who might replace him as DC? Torrian Gray? Also 38, he has now been at Tech for 7 years.

In speaking with Andy Bitter last year, Gray said, "I definitely want to coordinate my own defense. The only thing you think about maybe doing it is: do you need to coach in the NFL to become a coordinator on this level? That's in the back of your mind. Not only leave but somehow you've got to get that experience on your plate to be able to do those things."
