Virginia Tech gets three repeat matchups on 2013 ACC schedule, will go back to Miami, Boston College

Virginia Tech’s 2013 schedule has a similar feel to last season’s.

The ACC announced the conference matchups for the 2013 season on Friday. Virginia Tech will play at home against Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Maryland and on the road against Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia and Boston College.

The full ACC schedule is pictured. Click to embiggen.

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Some of the games — vs. Duke, at Miami, at Boston College — are repeat matchups from 2013. Because the league will expand to 14 teams next year with the additions of Syracuse and Pittsburgh, scheduling complications led to several rematches from this season.

Additionally, Florida State drops off the Hokies’ schedule. Virginia Tech would have been in line for a return trip to Tallahassee after this year’s game in Blacksburg. But because Pittsburgh became a guaranteed matchup within the division, one of Tech’s rotating crossover games had to go. Florida State was nixed and Maryland was kept.

The shakeup means Virginia Tech will not play Florida State or Clemson, the two most attractive matchups in the league.

As friend of the blog David Morrison of the Greensboro News & Record noted, the Hokies’ league opponents next year had a .440 winning percentage this season, lowest of any team’s schedule.

Here’s the Hokies’ home, road and neutral games next year:

  • Neutral: Alabama (in Atlanta)
  • Home: Western Carolina, Marshall, Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Maryland
  • Away: East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia and Boston College

I know I am old but really, “embiggen” is a word? Andy, I learned something today. Thank you.

I went to Atlanta for the last game against ‘Bama. I am thinking about amking the trek again. One of my friends (and neighbors) is a “Bama graduate and we are talking about making the game together. That will be UGLY.

I still think we can run the table after them but we will need to pick up the pieces of this past season to do so. Can’t be too cocky going into it but it is possible. I don’t see anyone to fear but ourselves.

  2. Andy Bitter | January 11, 2013 at 11:52 am

    Ha! It’s a Simpson’s reference. I can’t help myself sometimes.

They would say it’s a perfectly cromulent word.

    Cromulent
A word meaning valid or acceptable, coined by David X. Cohen for the Simpsons episode “Lisa the Iconoclast”.
When schoolteacher Edna Krabappel hears the Springfield town motto “A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man,” she comments she’d never heard of the word embiggens before moving to Springfield. Miss Hoover replies, “I don’t know why; it’s a perfectly cromulent word”.

Later in the same episode, while talking about Homer’s audition for the role of town crier, Principal Skinner states “He’s embiggened that role with his cromulent performance.”

Based on the context in which Miss Hoover uses the word cromulent, we can interpret that she intends it to mean “legitimate”, “applicable” or “appropriate.” Principal Skinner seems to use it to mean “more than acceptable” or “more than adequate”; these usages would also (in an assumed lexical context) satisfy Miss Hoover’s use of the word. Perhaps both characters intend it to mean “authentic”, which would validate both uses of the word (e.g. “it’s a perfectly authentic word” and “he embiggened that role with his authentic performance”). Lisa uses it later in that episode, when instead of telling the truth about Jebediah Springfield, she accepts that the myth and the made-up words have inspirational value. The word has a sort of recursive irony about it: as a made-up word it possesses none of the qualities that it describes.

AB, just wondering… you had that response typed up and ready to go in a word doc on your desktop entitled, “Explanation In Case of Questions Regarding The Use of Embiggen in My Blog”, didn’t you?

Kudos to Zman for asking- I just assumed I was behind the times and it was just some sort of excepted blogging lexicon, like the word “blogging”.

    HS for OC!

  4. Mike | January 11, 2013 at 12:18 pm

ACCEPTED. Jesus- and I complain to myself about others’ unintelligible comments.

  5. Barry From Ivy | January 11, 2013 at 12:19 pm

At Georgia Tech, that one you can pencil in for the Jackets. Can anyone list who the 6 wins will be for Vt? Probably Duke, UVA and the usual cupcakes. Clemson and FSU definitely need to be in different divisions because they are without argument the best 2 teams in the ACC. However, GT made it close in the championship this year.

  6. VT owns GT | January 11, 2013 at 12:23 pm

Pretty damn lousy home schedule other than UNC and Pitt.

Why would people continue to buy season tickets with this kind of home schedule?? The more I think about it, the ACC sucks and Weaver is ruining this program.

  7. Trevor | January 11, 2013 at 12:31 pm

It would appear that the ACC must have hit the RB button to randomize the schedule and said, “Perfect. Print and release it.”

    LOL. Only in the ACC…

  8. Frank | January 11, 2013 at 12:39 pm

    Let’s go Hokies !!!

  9. Ralph | January 11, 2013 at 1:03 pm

I guess since we don`t play Florida State next year our schedule has become a little `umbiggen`.

  10. Desert Hokie | January 11, 2013 at 1:15 pm

    Andy,

Love this blog, but as a loyal reader, Andy, you need professional help.

  11. Andy Bitter | January 11, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Just to clear things up, that was from a Simpsons website. I didn’t type that up myself.

  12. Desert Hokie | January 11, 2013 at 1:54 pm

    Andy,

Thank goodness. Thought your cheese had slid off your cracker.

  13. Ancient Bobcat | January 11, 2013 at 1:55 pm

Frankly, I don’t give a flying frank! Such a frankly NC caliber schedule, more-so a frank-n-stein one. Go Frank!

  14. JukesHokie | January 11, 2013 at 2:02 pm

2013 Home Games Schedule Looks BLEAK !!!

  15. Bobby Clark | January 11, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Look for Louisville to replace Maryland on the 2013 schedule very soon! That’s what a writer from Clemson is saying, anyway.

  16. VTRedwolf | January 11, 2013 at 2:54 pm

Just a good VT team should be able to run the schedule with the exception of Alabama.

VT will get one chance against a good team next year and that’s it. Even if we’re undefeated (hard to think but much less say with a straight face) it’s likely we would be hard pressed to be included in the top 5.

Sigh…I’ve never been embarrassed to think like that…jeez

  17. Steve78 | January 11, 2013 at 2:59 pm

London tells us that he had several highly qualified candidates for the vacancies in Charlottesville and the only news we get out of Blacksburg is one interview. It hasn’t even been confirmed that that interview actually took place. No dismissals, no reassignments, just dead air. I still say if significant changes are not made there are only 4 wins on next years schedule, and that schedule is pretty weak. If I had not already given up the season tickets these coaches and this schedule would do it for me.

  18. truth | January 11, 2013 at 3:23 pm

I hate the waiting,Come on lets go!I don,t know if I,ll buy my tickets or not.If we get a good OC then I will. Please Logan Go Pro.Mark L can run faster.

  19. the other Tony | January 11, 2013 at 3:30 pm

Our schedule ” sucks”. I guess Beamer and Weaver sweet talked the ACC to avoid the FSU rematch in Tallahassee because the Alabama game is all we need to make the schedule tuff ????????? This program is becoming a joke here and around the country. I guess we will fill up the ESPN3 schedule, so get your computers ready and get out the magnifying glass for viewing.

  20. Jerry | January 11, 2013 at 3:38 pm

Best home games for VT are UNC and Maryland. Terps will be much improved and UNC will be off probation.

  21. Trevor | January 11, 2013 at 3:43 pm

@Steve78, I have heard from a source that Beamer basically issued a gag order, so that’s why we have not heard a single peep out of the Merryman Center about who’s being interviewed, and who is on Tech’s short list. From what I understand, there are several candidates, but nobody knows who, which is very shocking. Apparently, beat writers don’t have the snooping prowessness of tabloid writers.

  22. Rich | January 11, 2013 at 3:46 pm

I actually like MD as a home game…Stephon Diggs is a 1st round WR and we can kick their butt right into the B1G

  23. Rich | January 11, 2013 at 3:57 pm

Other Tony…get back on the meds. Having to play at 2 of your toughest divisional opponents on the road is tough and a tough break that they have to go to an improving Miami team 2 yrs in a row…fair enough trade off for not having FSU on the schedule…besides VT will have to beat either Clemson or FSU to win the title anyway

  24. SCHokieFan | January 11, 2013 at 4:03 pm

Andy another thank you for the explanation of “embiggen” from an Old F**T. Also I love and look forward to your columns and blog

  25. Barry from Ivy | January 11, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Rich–kinda like you kicked Pittsburgh’s butt this year. LOL

  26. Peppers Ferry | January 11, 2013 at 4:16 pm

Scratch the ‘Bama game. Pencil in E. KY or Ark. State. ESPN won’t take a million$$ loss on a poorly coached team.

  27. Jerry | January 11, 2013 at 4:17 pm

    @Rich…

I like your enthusiasm, but I think this year is Maryland’s breakout year for Edsall before leaving for a better conference. Hey VT…can you please contact Jim Delaney and ask for membership? VA borders MD now, so VA is the Big 10′s footprint.

  28. Steve78 | January 11, 2013 at 4:21 pm

If Beamer can shut that many people up maybe he can get a job controlling leaks in DC. It is not just the Merryman Center that has to be kept quiet.

  29. Barry from Ivy | January 11, 2013 at 4:23 pm

Looks like Bama’s Lacy, Milliner and Fluker going to enter the NFL draft. This is good news for the Hokie Nation, it means they will lose 35 – 10 instead of 65 – 10.

  30. VT owns GT | January 11, 2013 at 4:28 pm

WTF are you talking about Peppers Ferry?? The game is already scheduled and a done deal. Impossible for ESPN to go back and swap teams in and out now. Your credibility sucks and I suggest you quit talking crap.

  31. 757 Resident | January 11, 2013 at 4:59 pm

Not complaining at all, I just want to see the ACC succeed. With that being said, FSU and Virginia Tech should be playing one another every year. Why this league continues to kill its own brand is amazing. This conference wants ratings, dollars, to be on par with the other conferences, then play your top dogs. Clemson and Virginia Tech should see one another more than they do also. Build up the rivalries and quit killing the brand!

  32. goapps78.234 | January 11, 2013 at 5:13 pm

Heck, I wish ASU was scheduled as opposed to Western The Tomato Cupcake University.

Finally ASU now has a defensive coordinator with a pedigree and 18 starters back from last year. Plus they have a DB who decommitted from Pittsburg, a good defensive end, etc.

I guess the 9 November game with Georgia will have to suffice.

  33. the other Tony | January 11, 2013 at 5:17 pm

Hey Rich, you are dreaming, compare our schedule to any top 25 team in the country and try to justify us being rated highly if ( and a BIG if ) we win 10 to 12 games.

  34. VT owns GT | January 11, 2013 at 5:20 pm

Amen 757!! Bunch of clowns running this conference and now this school.

The home schedule is a joke and that is bad for both the football program and the Blacksburg area.

If we were in the SEC we would need to add another 10 thousands seats. Never gonna happen with this sort of scheduling….attendance will slowly erode and diminish everything that was built thus far.

  35. Zman | January 11, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I am so sorry I asked about “embiggen”. Now I feel like i walked in a fis story in Texas where they talk about “embiggens wa gotchway”

I know I am pop culture challenged, in part because I was in Europe for so many years and in part because I hate pop culture, but jeeeez – quoting the Simpsons? I am turning on my Encore Western channel yet again.

And will someone please shoot Barry From Ivy?

Crooked Road – the only legal response form you to that question is “A’hm yer huckelburry”.

And why don’t we start a “Norv Turner for OC” blog?

  36. crooked road | January 11, 2013 at 5:51 pm

Zman – to continue the analogy, ‘Say when…’

Z… talk to me about the OC job. What’s your take on the deal? Why the paucity of candidates? Who dried up the kiddie pool of eligibles?

  37. Brad | January 11, 2013 at 6:27 pm

What makes yall think we can beat Pitt, UNC, and Miami after being blown out by all three last year?

Hokies might win one of those. Western Carolina is terrible even in AA. Duke will be down. Oughta beat BC and UVA again.

East Carolina could be tricky, but Tech usually comes to play against mediocre opponents on the road. Marshall may turn out to be a tougher challenge than the Pirates.

I’m not convinced MD is going to have a rebound season. I don’t think they have much to work with, even when they have a QB.

GT is a toss-up, though if Vad Lee gets going next year, watch out.

With Alabama, you just never know. I think Tech will be playing inspired football, and the Tide might not be taking this one very seriously. We should’ve beaten the national champion USC team a few years back, if not for that phantom offensive pass interference call.

My prediction: 8-4 against an embarassingly easy schedule.

  38. Desert Hokie | January 11, 2013 at 6:40 pm

Who says there is a paucity of candidates? Because he doesn’t make public everyone he talks to? Oh, I forgot, you can read minds and have this mystical insight into Beamer’s every move and whim. You know what he is going to do and why. You know what he is not going to do and why not. It must be a burden to carry such power. Speak oh great Crooked Road and illuminate us all!

  39. Ralph | January 11, 2013 at 7:00 pm

Zman, to continue the analogy. “I`ve got a lot of friends.” “I don`t.” Sorry to but in on you`all`s conversation but that is great movie and it keeps me from commenting about the demise of the basketball program. Maybe we can do Josie Wales next. “Reckon so.” Spit

  40. Barry From Ivy | January 11, 2013 at 7:11 pm

Brad is dreaming if he thinks the Hokies are going 8-4. With a worse team this season than 2012, it will be a tall order to win 4 games. If Thomas doesn’t go pro (and end up like Drunkenmiller) they might stretch it to 5 wins. GT will win the Coastal again. Clemson will win the Atlantic, possibly be in the NC game.

  41. danny | January 11, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Crooked Road just cant wait to find out who the new OC is so he can start tearing into the new guy. He will want to use the fancy words and inform everyone how and why it is such a terrible hire. I’m sure he has it all written up, just needs to fill in the blank with the new coach’s name.

  42. crooked road | January 11, 2013 at 7:20 pm

DH, proof is in the pudding. The game is the game, and Frankie’s showin’ how little game he’s got. You still want to pretend he’s got lockdown control over media and every other form of communication, like he’s the player? Nothing out of formal media? Nothing out of social media? Nothing out of nothing?

Seriously? Okay, once he makes his hire, if he can even find someone, then you can come back around and talk about what a fantastic snatch that was, and how desired by everyone else in the nation the guy is and how Frank showed how much everybody wants to come work for him by making the get that he got. Or… you can finally realize he’s not all that, despite what you wished.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cryMVK1PwuQ

Here it is, you could put aside the blinders and talk about how the Hokies reach the levels Frank pretends he wants to reach. It’s pretty simple. Chips all in. You? Frank? Didn’t think so. The game is the game…

  43. VTRedwolf | January 11, 2013 at 7:37 pm

CR gets carried away some times, but he’s right to be furious about the situation we find ourselves in. You don’t have to a football coach to have known the offense coaches were holding us back these many years. I don’t know that we’ve ever had an offensive line that lived up to what were minimal expectations to begin with.

I would be more hopeful had we not gotten entirely owned in most of those losses and several of the wins. LT will get better or Mark Leal will get a chance, but the offense will hinge on the running game. You take out LT’s runs and we average less than 2 yards per carry. If we don’t fix that, and I don’t think we can with the running backs we currently field, we’re fighting for 8-4.

  44. VTRedwolf | January 11, 2013 at 7:50 pm

EX RAVENS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR CAM CAMERON NAMED VT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

  45. VTRedwolf | January 11, 2013 at 7:51 pm

Okay I just made that up but the all caps made it so much more believable!

  46. VTRedwolf | January 11, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Actually David Teel reporting Beamer interviewing Scot Loeffler, ex OC at Auburn. I see a trend that is really QB focused and I like it.

  47. Barry From Ivy | January 11, 2013 at 8:08 pm

I still think Will Furrer would be the best choice for OC. Beamer will tell us something by Jan 15th.

  48. HokieHope | January 11, 2013 at 8:12 pm

Even with a cupcake schedule, and no changes on the offensive of the ball. We will be 4 – 8 next year. Logan Thomas is not the problem. The coaching on the offense is. Change the coaching to a respectable name, and we will go back to winning 10 games.

  49. crooked road | January 11, 2013 at 8:31 pm

I don’t guess anyone wants to spend time discussing how the mere fact that Frank Beamer seems to be scurrying around Nashville trying to hire anyone whose breath clouds a mirror – that could possibly be dissuading people from answering Frank’s call on their cell phone?

Nobody wants to discuss any of this? Everyone’s going to hide when they hear the whistling? You all know it’s going to happen, and then you’ll all have to pretend it never happened, and pretend you only want to ‘talk about the future’, when that’s just code words for you spending so much time running from the present.

Anybody see a line? Anybody see folks holding their hands up to be interviewed by Frank? Anybody think it’s 2:00 a.m. on Black Friday outside of Merryman’s doors? No line. No hands held up. No interest. Nobody wants to admit why.

Hey, those Catamounts! They’ll get after ya! Flyin’ around out there… Be sure to stop at Kroger for all your tailgate needs, and fill up at any Stop In’s to help line Shane’s pockets while you’re at it. Go Hokies!

  50. VT owns GT | January 11, 2013 at 8:43 pm

Sounds like Scott Loeffler may be a leading candidate now. Has a decent resume in college as OC and 1 yr in the NFL as a QB coach. Was a grad assistant at Michigan and helped coach Tom Brady which he is apparently good friends with. Redskins QB coach could be in the picture too.

  51. Hokie 95 | January 11, 2013 at 10:16 pm

I think Barry lives in his mother’s basement and this is his only out. If we see in the paper where son gets kicked out by own mother we will know it was Barry. Maybe they will put him in a round rubber room and tell him to pee in the corner. At least he won’t have internet access. GT wins divison by default and he thinks they are world beaters. CRAZY.

  52. VTRedwolf | January 11, 2013 at 10:33 pm

Look the VT OC position is a good position, good money, good talent and a good (yet somewhat delusional) fan base.

Everyone knows Frank is looking and you can bet he’s getting tons of calls from other coaches pushing friends, former assistants, etc. Still Frank’s silence is making him appear desparate.

  53. Mike 3 | January 11, 2013 at 11:29 pm

Loeffler is about 39 and has a good resume, best choice mentioned to date.

  54. Hokie Bob | January 12, 2013 at 11:50 am

“embiggen” well sh** my pants you learn something new every day!
