RB Drew Harris tweets he’s still committed to Virginia Tech, can enroll in May at the earliest
Drew Harris will have to wait until spring to enroll, but he appears to be a firm commitment with the Hokies.
Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
The four-star running back from Fork Union had his admission to Virginia Tech delayed by what he termed a “paperwork error” last week. Still, Fork Union coach John Shuman thought there might be a chance he could enroll at Tech today anyway.
That doesn’t appear to be true, based on a couple of tweets by Harris this afternoon, in which he reconfirmed his commitment and gave a timeline for his enrollment.

I Can Enroll in May at the Earliest
— Drew Harris™ (@Hollacide) January 21, 2013
The first summer school session at Virginia Tech begins May 28.
Harris’ recruitment is still technically open. Doug Doughty reported last week that Rutgers, Temple and Miami had shown interest in the running back after the latest paperwork snafu. Although if Harris’ tweets are to be believed, he’s still heading to Virginia Tech, just a little later than expected.
Seven Virginia Tech players — three recent high school grads, three 2012 signees and Fork Union offensive lineman Jonathan McLaughlin — begin class Tuesday.

It would be nice to know what is meant by “paperwork error”. I believe this kid will never play for VT.
Glad to hear that Drew is still planning to enroll and play football at VT. I think he will be a great back.
I think he will be a great Virginia Tech back, Drew and Trey Edmond will be the two work horse,s this fall!! Getting our line to block is Key!
My guess is the “paperwork” error probably indicates he did not qualify yet. Thus the reason he stayed at FUMA. Blame it on a paperwork error rather than the true meaning. Why would FB not be sitting in the admissions office insuring his paperwork was complete if it was truly an issue on VT’s side.
Andy, is there any chance one of the new offensive coaches at VT bringing a recruit or two with them?
At this point you have to take him at his word. Says he will be at Tech, wants to come to Tech still, and has every thing in order now. Stood by his word. Welcome to Tech, young man!
Nuff said is Nuff said. He will be here in may and he will be good.
Good news. Harris should be excited by the change in coaching on offense. I’m looking forward to seeing him and the changes the new coaches bring with them.
Hey Andy, who is Derrick Green leaning toward now.
I agree Andy, can you clarify exactly what is the “paperwork error” everyone keeps refering to, in regards to Harris.
Thanks
If Beamer does not screw it up then the administration will. Our commitment to sports is not good enough to run with the big boys. Not sure that is a bad thing.
Sorry, been away from the computer for awhile today. Here are a few answers:
To many: my guess is the “paperwork error” was a matter of not getting everything in on time. He appears to be cleared by the fact that he can enroll in May. He just didn’t have all the stuff in on time. I’m not sure whose fault that is.
As for new coaches bringing recruit with them, I’m not sure if that’s going to happen. VT’s class is pretty full right now. (It’s going to be up against the 85 scholarship limit post-signing day.) I’m sure if there was a stud OL that might come, they’d make room. But I don’t think that’ll be the case.
No clue on Derrick Green. Looks like it’s down to Michigan, Auburn and Tennessee. Two of those schools have new coaches, so you’d figure they’d be at a disadvantage. But I’d never count out an offensive coach like Gus Malzahn when it comes to running backs.
Andy, the NCAA clearing house is a crock of sh*&!! It’s absurd that they can’t work with the boy and get his paperwork straightened out for him to enroll now. Absolutely ridiculous!!
Thanks for the answers, Andy; but, you left out how far it is from Foxborough to Boston. #7 on first blog.
Google maps says 30 miles. Seems a bit far to consider that Boston.
Rivals top 100 today has 3 VT players in the top 100 recruits. When’s the last time that has happened?
I know it hasn’t happened since at least 2002, as far back as Rivals’ database goes back.
Agree. Guess we`ll have to go with `79 Steeler Pirates. Same stadium, too. That won`t happen again.
Nice to see the commitment to VT is still strong.
Just seen the breaking news out of Hooville on their top recruit Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell. Figured we’d get the details of why they call him “Smoke”……turns out to be an underage alcohol charge.
Couldn’t resist a stab at the Cavs and that holier than thou, squeaky clean mentality so many of their fans seem to have of all their athletes. Seriously though, I hope this kid comes out of this with little harm to his future in a Cavs uniform, and a little wiser to the fact that when you’re a scholarship athlete and the BMOC….every body’s got you in their sights. Sincerely, I hope this kid learns something from this and realizes what an opportunity he has been given.
Virginia Tech needs a big, strong back to run the ball, not these 175 pound players.
A 175 pound running back could get seriously hurt against Alabama.
Trey or Drew would be the answer, at least in size.
Oooh he made a commitment…talk is cheap. Lance Armstrong denied being “juiced” for years. Now look at him. VT aught to be afraid someone will snatch him before May or another “paperwork error”.
FRANK!!! I keep saying the very same thing. If we want to run the ball in the style FB wants to run we need backs that are 225. Gregory and Coleman were very shifty and elusive but rarely broke a tackle. Still think there’s a place for Coleman in this offense but I hope he puts on another 10-15 pounds before Alabama. Alabama fields NFL-ready running backs, down hill guys with power and size – of course that’s why they’re Alabama. Last year these guys were young and perhaps they’ll be more ready this year, but we’ve seen many freshman running backs have great success so youth is no excuse. I just don’t think you can be an effective running back at 175-185 pounds (if Gregrory was 185 pounds I’ll eat my hat). Here’s hoping last year was an abberation.
On another note UVA’s 5star RB recruit Mizzell was arrested on a visit to UVA for underage drinking. I really hope they give the kid a break it’s not like he assaulted someone or stole something. This is certainly not a reason not to admit a guy and it’s a lesson learned for him. Having said that someone should have been minding him better than that.
Frank, VT does not have any 175 lb. running backs on its active roster. As you know, Coleman bulked up to 192 before the season started. There are usually some light weights coming in as freshmen, but most of them add weight before playing. There are several in the NFL who weigh less than 200, and do a good job at RB. Hillman for the Broncos ran for 83 yards against the Ravens, and he weighs only 185. I also prefer RBs who weigh over 200.
Mizzell’s mistake in ‘Hooville seemed like typical student stuff. I’d be disappointed in him, but harder on his “host”. Hard not to get in trouble out drinking ’till the wee hours, then standing in the middle of the street kicking at passing cars! He hasn’t been there long enough for the local police to know that he’s the new “BMOC”, anyway. I don’t like the ‘hoos, but I have never wished hardship, injury or personal struggles on their kids. They are, after all, kids. Now their fans……
Al – what is YOUR PROBLEM?
Easy…Al is a ascot wearing hooo. Wish you all the best with the brie, and zima. Take your altitude elsewhere.
Me neither perch, I hate to see any kid get in trouble with the law for any reason. Really hope it just wakes him up and makes him look around at where he’s at and what he could accomplish for himself while there. There are thousands of kids who would do anything to trade spots with him who would be of no trouble to Hooville police. Lets hope he realizes that. And after all, the popo know who he is now….he’s on their radar for sure after this incident.
Zman…I got no problem. I’m just living in the real world. Talk is cheap isn’t it? Mike Vick’s famous last words were “I will return to VT”. Didnt’t happen. If you think that this running back is the answer for VT, when the D is weak and Beamerball is no longer feared or even exists, then you are fooling yourself. Heck, Marshall stayed with them for a half!
Mike…no ascot for me, it more buckskin and musket. Brie and Zima…nope. Its Moonpies and RCs.
Hokies should have nothing to say about that drunk UVA player. Afterall, VT had a guy (20 years old) who was convicted, with 2 of his buddies, of giving alcohol to three underage girls. Remember the other Vick?
Props to DSU for landing Mizzell. But he is no Derrick Green. Green in HS was a man playing amongst boys. I dream that Tech’s new offensive staff, who are supposed to be terrific recruiters, will put a final push on Green, who just might be interested in the new regime. At least Stinespring is no longer in charge (was he ever?)
Al’s real world includes it’s share of drunken folks if he’s an ‘eer fan. We need to cut him some slack, though, the toxic fumes from all those burning couches has possibly corroded his thinking. If he thinks VT fans gave Marcus Vick a pass (how long ago was that, anyway), then he doesn’t know too many of us. Many, if not most, were embarrassed by his association with VT, a feeling I suspect that is foreign to the West B’God crowd.
Perch…sounds like sour grapes. Hokies only wish they had some traditions other than yearly disappointments. I may not know too many of you, but I watch, listen, and read. And I know my share of embarassment…I have to put up with Buckwild! Let’s revive the VT-WVU football game. It was a lot of fun.
