Former Hokie Duane Brown to play in the Pro Bowl

Texans Jaguars FootballFor the third time in the last four years, a former Hokie will play in the NFL’s Pro Bowl.

Houston Texans offensive tackle Duane Brown, an All-Pro selection this season, will play in the game tonight in Honolulu, Hawaii. He’ll start along with Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns at tackle for the AFC.

Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.

Brown, who played at Virginia Tech from 2004-07 and transitioned from tight end to tackle, recently finished his fifth year in the league. He allowed only 2½ sacks and went the entire season without a holding penalty.

Seattle safety Kam Chancellor made the game as an injury replacement last year. Michael Vick made it for Philadelphia and DeAngelo Hall for Washington in 2010.

If you’re interested in watching — and clearly have nothing better to do tonight — the game starts at 7 p.m. and will be televised by NBC.

Here’s a list of Virginia Tech alums who have made the Pro Bowl:

  • Buzz Nutter, C, Pittsburgh, 1963
  • Don Oakes, T, Boston, 1968
  • Carroll Dale, WR, Green Bay, 1969-71
  • Mike Johnson, LB, Cleveland, 1991
  • Bruce Smith, DE, Buffalo, 1988-91, ’93-99
  • Antonio Freeman, WR, Green Bay, 1999
  • Shayne Graham, PK, Cincinnati, 2005
  • DeAngelo Hall, CB, Atlanta, 2005-06, Washington ’10
  • Michael Vick, QB, Atlanta 2002, ’04-05, Philadelphia ’10
  • Kam Chancellor, S, Seattle, 2012
  • Duane Brown, T, Houston, 2013

Congrats to Duane Brown, however, the Pro Bowl is pretty much a big joke now that they’ve scheduled it before the Superbowl and the players are just too cautious about getting hurt in the era of big contracts. So, it’s hardly a competitive game and still questionable as to whether the NFL will continue to stage it.

No reason to play the game that I can see. But it certainly is a statement to be included.

Did any VT coaches give this list of VT Pro Bowlers to Hermitage High School’s N0. 1 ranked running back, Derrick Green? As you may know, this Richmond athlete just made his commitment to the University of Michigan. Why wasn’t VT mentioned in his final three schools? Now here is the very best recruit in your six-hour recruiting area, and VT didn’t come close to getting him. The Turtles and French Poodles are now committing to VT, the Rabbits and Black Bears are now leaving the area and going to big-time national programs. By the way, who was going to be VT’s 2013 Quarterback, if Logan made a foolish decision and entered the NFL Draft??

I thought David Wilson made it to the Pro Bowl this year, too. Is that not correct?

Don, do you have any knowlege about whether we made no attempt to recruit this guy? I, also, would like to know why he wasn’t VT bound, but I would suggest that you’d have to ask him, not us. Do you seriously think VT didn’t give him their best pitch? Why not? You ask good questions, but do you have any inside dope on why we didn’t get this kid?

Wilson was a second team All-Pro. Did not get voted to the Pro Bowl, though. They are separate things.

#3- If Drew Harris joins the team VT will have THREE 4 Star RBs on the roster. No big loss. The QB would’ve been Mark Leal with an appearance every few plays by Carlis Parker. Chances are they’re better than your teams backups

    DERRICK GREEN COMMITS TO MICHIGAN.

Well, hopefully Drew Harris follows through to VT in the Spring, and hopefully Trey Edmunds steps up as well.

Yeah, I just got tired of reading the comments above. And I posted old news. Mr. Bitter, please feel free to remove my post for redundancy.

Hi Andy. Is there any truth to the rumor that Antone Exum tore his ACL playing basketball last night? This has been posted on another board from another site and I am hoping there isn’t any truth to this.

Flowers and Chancellor were also selected as alternates this year.
