Nine Hokies make VaSID All-State teams; five on first team

Virginia Tech had a state-high nine players named to the VaSID University Division All-State Football teams on Monday.
Follow me on Twitter and Facebook.
Five players earned first-team honors: tackle Nick Becton, defensive end James Gayle, defensive tackle Derrick Hopkins, linebacker Jack Tyler and cornerback Antone Exum.
Four more Hokies were on the second team: quarterback Logan Thomas, tackle Vinston Painter, kicker Cody Journell and punter A.J. Hughes. Of the group, only Becton and Painter were seniors.
Virginia Tech was shut out of the major awards, though. Old Dominion’s Taylor Heinicke was offensive player of the year, while Bobby Wilder of the Monarchs earned coach of the year honors. Virginia linebacker Steve Greer was named defensive player of the year.
The Hokies had the most players selected for the teams with nine. ODU, Virginia and James Madison were tied for second with seven apiece.
The Cavaliers had the most first-team selections with six. The Hokies and Monarchs were next with five apiece. For the full team, click the link at the top of the post.

Andy,
I would like to hear more about recruits that mar be coming to Tech with only nine days or so left have you heard anything. Can Jeff Grimes Pull some in ? Thanks
This a meaningless award, and it is ridiculous.
Sorry, no offense to the players from Liberty, Old Dominion, etc., but this list seems a bit suspect.
Bruce Taylor didn’t make 1st or 2nd team??? Somebody wasn’t watching.
Typical year at UVA. Good recruits, decent football players, another crumby team. The absence of Bruce Taylor invalidates the list, in my mind anyway.
VT will find out about OD soon!
Why in the world do the SID’s waste their time on this? What a meaningless exercise
What a complete exercise in futility!!!.. – This “all-state” team is a JOKE!………………HOWEVER!……
…….I am NOT, nor ever will be a HOKIE fan!!.
BUT, how does BRUCE TAYLOR from Virginia Tech NOT make it on the FIRST, or even the SECOND, “All-State” team…???
He was probably one of the Top 10 defensive players in the ACC this year!!
This is token acknowledgement that there are any other football teams outside the Hokies that matter in Virginia.
Taylor was honorable mention on the All-ACC teams. Taylor slipped a little from his best year as a sophomore. He misses the team because something has to be given to JMU and the Hoo guy.
Any award is better than no award? Hey guys, if it is a meaningless award why would you care about Bruce Taylor being overlooked?
I was basing my assessment what he actually did on the field when he WAS there………Not for when he “wasn’t”!!
Zman, I know I didn’t call the award “meaningless”, and I congratulate those players selected. I do believe the selections can be criticized fairly, not hard to do with a subjectively selected list like this one.
Bruce Taylor should have been on it, in my opinion.
